The NLC is protesting the Federal Government’s failure to address the demands of striking university workers.

The banner which featured a masquerade with Ngige's face said, “This Okija priest must be banished from our universities. Enough is enough!”
Meanwhile, Ngige has faulted the protests by the NLC stating there were no grounds for it.

Culture / Today In 1857, Arrival Of Christianity In Igboland by Adaidemili: 2:47pm On Jul 27, 2022
Today marks the Arrival of Christianity. It is the 165th anniversary of the advent of Christianity in Igboland and the 112th anniversary in the community promoted by the CMS (Church Missionary Society), led by Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther and by Rev. J.C Taylor (The Apostle of Igboland) together with the led team by the Physician, Dr. William Balfour Baikie.

Unfortunately, the first expedition in August 1841, in which the group entered the Niger River, was a painful failure as malaria killed fifty-four out of a hundred and sixty-two whites within weeks. Samuel Ajayi Crowther also led a team of native missionaries in the Niger Valley.

The Arrival of Christianity in Igboland
Once again, in 1857, Reverend Ajayi Crowther and J.C Taylor, along with a number of catechists, joined Macgregor Laird on an expedition, sponsored by the British government. Reverend Crowther also had a specific assignment from the CMS to found the Mission in Niger. It was in the Christ Church camp in Onitsha that the Mission to Niger began in 1857 as an African initiative.

Upon arrival of Christianity, the team was received and established in Onitsha by Obi Akazue, the 14th Obi of Onitsha on July 27, 1857. Hence, the Anglican Church became the first church in Igboland.

The Anglican Church of Christ, Onitsha (Ebube Niger) was also the first church in Igboland. Some developments in Igboland, especially in education, can be attributed to Christian missions

However, Anglicans in Igboland celebrate the anniversary of the CMS every July 27, which they use to measure their past, present and predict what the Christian faith would be like in the future.

Igbo Origin
Igbo, also called Ibo, people living mainly in southeastern Nigeria who speak Igbo, a language of the Benue-Congo branch of the Niger-Congo language family. Grouped into the following major cultural divisions: Northern, Southern, Western, Eastern or Cross River and Northeast.

How Igbo felt About Christianity

The Igbo feared that if they became Christians, their gods would bring them disaster. Soothsayers and sorcerers reported that the deities were angry at the new religion and warned that no one should join the missionaries.

First Church in Igboland
The Anglican mission arrived in Igboland in the last half of the nineteenth century being the first Christian mission to enter Igboland, precisely in 1857, with Onitsha as the first place of missionary propagation. From Onitsha the mission extended to other parts of Igboland.

Who Wrote Igbo Bible?
Samuel Ajayi Crowther’s first Igbo language book (Isoama – Ibo: A Primer) written by a Yoruba man, Samuel Ajayi Crowther (1809-1891) in 1857. “The book had 17 pages, with the Igbo alphabets, words, phrases, sentence patterns, the Our Father, the Ten Commandments and translations of the first chapters of the Gospel of Matthew.

First Church In Nigeria
The cathedral church of San Pietro

Peters, Ake Abeokuta, is the first church in Nigeria. History teaches us that when Christianity first arrived in what is now known as Nigeria through the Portuguese missionary, no particular church was founded before they left.

Which Year Did Catholic Church Came to Nigeria?
Nigeria became a part of the vast Vicariate Apostolic of the Two Guineas, created in 1842, but transferred to Gabon when that vicariate was created in 1863. Priests from the Society of african missions (SMA) also arrived along with British rule in 1861.

Nigeria Today
Today, Nigerian leaders, both in public life and in politics, education, church, commerce and industry, owe their education, in whole or in part, to the manual labor of missionaries. What Ajayi Crowther started one hundred and sixty-five years ago now gave birth to the church and for its livelihood Christians should strive to revive the spirit of this great African missionary.

Politics / Bola Ahmed Tinubu – A Man Of Destiny By David Hundeyin by Adaidemili: 2:11pm On Jul 14, 2022
Bola Ahmed Tinubu – A Man Of Destiny

In the course of researching this story, a name that kept coming up repeatedly as a comparison to Nigeria’s teflon Asiwaju was a certain Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola. When the Daily Beast took a stab at this story some years ago, a tantalising hint was mentioned in passing about an unimaginable parallel between 1993 and 2023.

I reached out to everyone I could think of with some knowledge of the affair. Most declined to speak, citing unspoken concerns. Only Prof Gary K. Busch, a notable African political risk analyst and one time Professor of African Studies at the University of Hawaii agreed to say his piece. His lengthy comment went as follows:

“The Nigerian military on the Council were adamant that the Babangida government should never allow Abiola to run for office and told President Babangida so during the aborted runoff primaries before the election. The basis for their concern about Abiola was the information and documentation being circulated in Washington, London and Lagos of Abiola’s alleged ties to the drugs business.

The US, in particular, had expressed its strong opposition to IBB about the candidacy of Abiola as President; not because of his politics or allegations of corruption, but rather for the evidence they felt was correct about Abiola’s alleged drugs connections. This issue was raised in the Military Council on three occasions and Babangida was warned. He refused to take a decision until it was almost too late. US Ambassador Lannon Walker and the British Consul visited IBB and warned him about Abiola but Babangida dithered which made the impact worse as the polling had begun.

Politics / 2023: Kanayo O Kanayo Advises Nigerians To Come Out And Vote by Adaidemili: 2:03pm On Jul 14, 2022
Ahead of the 2023 general elections, Veteran actor, Kanayo O Kanayo has called on Nigerians once again to come out and exercise their civic duties by casting their votes for the right candidates.

The movie star said this via a video shared on his Instagram page while lamenting that Nigerians who are yet to get their Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) are part of the problem in the country.

Kanayo noted that Nigerians have the power to save the country by going to vote, rather than going to church or mosque to pray.

Highlighting the problems in the country, the 60-year-old actor pleaded with Nigerians, who collect money from politicians to cast their vote, to stop being cheap, adding that the state of the nation calls for urgent action.

Politics / Bayo Onanuga: PDP Is Afraid Of Muslim-Muslim Ticket by Adaidemili: 11:51am On Jun 16, 2022
BBola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is terrified of a Muslim-Muslim ticket in 2023.

Tinubu Campaign spokesperson Bayo Onanuga accused the PDP of misinformation in a Facebook post on Wednesday night.

Last Monday, when delegates voted, the "scaremongering campaign" began on the conference grounds in Eagle Square, he added.

Despite the fact that the mischief was put out before it could spread, Onanuga stated that the PDP has "continued to feed the flames of religious mistrust in Nigeria."

The veteran journalist said nearly three weeks after “it breached the power rotation principle” which ought to return power to the south, the PDP dithers over the choice of a running mate for its candidate Atiku Abubakar.

Onanuga informed the public that all the anti-muslim articles since Tinubu won the 2023 ticket are mostly products of PDP machine.

“Only PDP can be mortally afraid of a muslim-muslim ticket as it is most likely to disrupt its 2023 election permutation, the way it upset its ancestral party, the National Republican Convention in 1993, when MKO Abiola and Babagana Kingibe won handily,” he said.

Onanuga said the fear of APC and its candidate has been fuelling national antagonisms against a matter beyond the purview of the 1999 constitution.

The former News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) chief insists the country’s constitution did not make religion a factor in seeking elective positions.

He said Chapter VI, Part I, Section 131 states that a person may be qualified for election into the office of the president if a citizen by birth, has attained the age of 35 years and is a member of a party.

Onanuga added that when people introduce religion into a secular activity, they can only plan to tear Nigeria apart via a holy war.

The spokesman urged Nigerians to “disregard the PDP red-herring campaign and refuse to swallow it hook, line and sinker”.

His post added that the country needs a formidable team, either Christian or Muslim, to lead its 200 million people driven by a vision of national development.

Politics / Anambra: INEC Punishes 2 Members , Establishes 25 Registration Centers by Adaidemili: 11:24am On Jun 16, 2022
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said on Tuesday that two of its Registration Officers in the Nnewi North local government area of Anambra state had been removed after being accused of wrongdoing.

Dr Nkwachukwu Orji, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Anambra state, claimed this while speaking to reporters on the status of the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) campaign, revealing that an investigation was underway to uncover the circumstances before prosecution.

He also announced the opening of 25 more registration centres around the state, in addition to the 22 that were opened earlier this month, to handle the noticeable increase in residents enrolling for CVR.

“I am pleased to announce that the commission has created an additional 25 registration centres in Anambra state, and that they commenced operation by 9.00 am today. The additional centers bring the total number of centers in Anambra state to 87. We have reopened some LGA offices that were shut down as a result of insecurity.

“Specifically, on Tuesday, 7 June 2022, the Idemili North LGA office was reopened. Today, 14 June 2022, we have resumed registration exercise in Ogbaru and Ayamelum LGAs. We have reorganized our operational procedure by separating people seeking biometric services from those that require non-biometric services.

“In this sense, biometric service involves fresh registration while non-biometric services include request for PVC Replacement, Voter Transfer, and Update. Let me restate that those requesting non biometric services need not come to the registration centers. These services can be obtained through the commission’s CVR portal.

“However, we have deployed personnel to assist those who cannot access the online portal at the various registration centers. In areas where the security situation permits, we would extend our operation time, which is 9.00 am to 3.00 pm. We would continue to expand our public communication to inform and educate members of the public,” he stated.

Politics / POLITICSINEC Deadline: Tinubu Submits Masari’s Name As Running Mate by Adaidemili: 10:41am On Jun 16, 2022
The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Tinubu has submitted the name of Kabir Ibrahim Masari as part of a plan to beat the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) deadline of Friday, June 17 for political parties to submit the names of presidential candidates and their running mates.

Masari's name, who originates from President Muhammadu Buhari's native state of Kaduna, is expected to be altered when the party's stakeholders have settled on a viable vice-presidential candidate for the 2023 elections.

A party source confirmed to DAILY POST that it was true that Tinubu has submitted the name of his running mate, but added that “consultation is still ongoing”

It was further gathered that the move by Tinubu and the ruling party was to meet the statutory requirement and beat the deadline set by the electoral umpire.

However, Tinubu will today meet President Muhammadu Buhari as consultation continues on the issue of his running mate.

There have been strong opposition against the issue of Muslim-Muslim ticket been mulled by the ruling party.

Though some names had been mentioned as possible running-mates to the former Lagos State governor, it was gathered that no compromise had been reached yet.

A source in Tinubu’s camp said that all the northern governors want the position.

The source added that if Tinubu has his way, he would have loved to pick the former Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima as his running-mate, but he wanted the president and the governors to pick.

The source said: “All northern governors want it. If Asiwaju has his way, it will be Senator Kashim. But he wants the president and governors to pick for him.”

Asked why Tinubu does not want to pick his running mate himself, the source stressed he didn’t want to be a ‘winner takes it all.’

“He does not want to be the winner takes it all. You need to respect the President. PMB did not choose a VP for himself in 2015,” the source said.

One of the leaders of Tinubu Support Group, Hon. James Faleke was at the party secretariat yesterday, but his mission was not known.

But the source confirmed that Faleke was at the party secretariat yesterday to collect INEC’s form for the presidential and vice-presidential candidates to be filled.

Asked if Faleke was there to submit the name of the running mate to Tinubu, the source insisted that no compromise had been reached in the issue of running mate.

“When the decision is made, it will be made known to all and the decision will be made tomorrow (today),” he added.

Health / Unhealthy Foods, Including Junks You Should Avoid by Adaidemili: 10:23am On Mar 30, 2022
Unhealthy foods are those that have little nutritional value and are rich in fat, sugar, and calories, like the everyday junk you consumed.

Although such foods are abundant in protein, your body needs a particular quantity of protein but not an excessive amount.

Sugar
Sugar is a full source of empty calories since it contains only energy and no other nutrients. It is best consumed through food since it occurs naturally in fruits, vegetables, dried fruit, and milk/milk products.

A person should reduce their intake of sweets, candies, chocolates, soft drinks, fruit juices, and biscuits. Sugar should and must be eaten sparingly.

Caffeine
Coffee is the major source of caffeine. coffee beans are grown with the use of pesticides and herbicides that are toxic in nature.

caffeine is also found in chocolates, colas and other soft drinks so better to avoid them.

Some signs of caffeine problems are headache, depression, insomnia, high blood pressure, fatigue, etc.

Soft Drinks

Soft drinks are bad for health due to their sugar and caffeine content. Eliminate intake of soft drinks from the diet by replacing them with herbal teas, lemon water, water.

They only provide us with extra laden calories.

Refined Foods
Refined and processed foods are manufactured from maida and have no or very little fibre.

A lack of fibre in the diet causes constipation, sluggish intestines, and, in the worst-case scenario, colon cancer. Fibre is abundant in a whole food diet rich in vegetables and fruits.

Alcohol
Too much alcohol causes dehydration, irritation, headaches, and other side effects. If you drink on an empty stomach, you will consume empty calories.

Always pair your drink with something to eat. It’s best to use two pegs. Social drinking within limits is not dangerous, but the problem of alcoholism can be.

Unhealthy Food that Contains Saturated Fats

Excess saturated fat intake can lead to obesity, increased cholesterol levels which further lead to heart-related problems and a host of other disorders.

All fried foods, fatty meats, desi ghee, come under saturated fat. Bland food which has less oil and spices is hardly palatable so people jump toward the rich spicy and oily foods which give them taste and palatability.

Animal Protein as an Unhealthy Foods
Although animal protein like fish, egg, dairy products, chicken provides a complete source of protein which is good for health in excess it can be harmful.

The most popular source of animal fats like cheese, full-fat milk, ghee, red meat, beef can cause a lot of damage to one’s health.

Salt
Salt is a nutrient that the body requires in order to control fluid balance, maintain heart rhythm, transmit nerve impulses, and contract muscle.

A quarter teaspoon of table salt is necessary for a body requirement. Hypertension can be caused by consuming too much salt.

Canned and tinned meals, pickled meat, highly salted morning cereals, buns, cakes, pastries, packaged soups and sauces, and so on are rich in sodium.

Fashion / Trendy Pantsuits For The Classy Woman – Be Your Own Boss Baby In Style by Adaidemili: 6:01pm On Mar 29, 2022
Nothing screams “I’m serious about my business” like a Pantsuit. What better way to arrive at work as a Boss Baby or meet that important business customer than in a well-tailored pantsuit? Believe me.

Here are a few ideas to keep your pantsuit game fresh and exciting;
Proper and Calm Countenance
Boss Baby

Do you want to seem unconcerned and easygoing throughout this meeting? Wear your pantsuit with a simple shirt, shoes, you may include sunglasses. Color-coordinate your clothing; your jacket and slacks should be the same color and shade, and your shoes and basic shirt should match. This design is ideal for a balanced, refreshing, and relaxed demeanor while being a Boss.

Dinner’s Distraction

This is the greatest option for a casual supper with your coworkers. If you’re not sure how to differentiate yourself from your typical business attire but don’t want to seem too plain, pair your pantsuit with a crop top instead of a blouse, and crop your pants to highlight your feet. Add some expensive shoes to the mix, and you’re no longer simply the gal from work. Turn your sleeves into a half sleeve and put some jewelry on your wrist while you’re doing it.

A Boss Baby Of Seduction
Boss Baby Pantsuit

Pantsuits are functional and professional, but who says they can’t be flirty as well? Combine your pantsuit with a contrasting bralette or no top at all to amp up the intensity. This attire is also appropriate for humid climates. A lacy bralette tucked beneath your jacket catches exactly the proper amount of attention, and they’re also really comfy!

Play With The Patterns
Boss Baby

Work clothing do not have to be monotone! If you like to stick to the standard blacks, greys, and blues, add some life to your wardrobe by experimenting with patterns. Checks, plaids, polka dots, and stripes are just a few of the patterns that will liven up any outfit.

Culture / Ikeji Festival In Imo State, Nigeria by Adaidemili: 5:52pm On Mar 29, 2022
The Ikeji festival is an annual four-day celebration of the harvest of fresh yams and the Igbo culture conducted by the Igbo people of Arondizuogu in Imo State, Nigeria, in March and April.

This is equal to one week which corresponds to the four Igbo market days of Eke, Oye (Orie), Afo, and Nkwo.

Each of these days has a special significance and represents one of the several dimensions of Ikeja.

Eke is the day when livestock are purchased at various Eke markets.

Oye is the day of slaughter and feasting.

Afor is the day of more merriment and masquerade displays.

Nkwo is the carnival day when all new, old and ceremonial masquerades assemble at the central arena.

From all the towns and villages of Arondizuogu hordes of exotically dressed masquerades and their exuberant followers trudge out towards Nkwo Achi, the central arenas of the carnival.

Brief History of Ikeji Festival
Originally, ikeji was a ritual held to commemorate the end of the planting season. ‘Ikeji’ is thought to be a shortened version of ‘ike Ji isi’ (to remove the yam), which is commonly done in preparation for seed yam preservation in the yam barn.

In Arochukwu, Arondizuogu’s native homeland, Ikeji is conducted in March or April at Arondizuogu due to the ease of the location.

Early Christian missionaries were unable to comprehend Ikeji and, in classic European fashion, attributed it to paganism to deter their disciples from attending the celebration.

Ikeji, on the other hand, survived and came to be recognized as a cultural treasure deserving of preservation. Even the clergy now take part in ikeji.

Health / Health Benefits Of Some Traditional Nigerian Snacks by Adaidemili: 5:45pm On Mar 29, 2022
We may have abandoned several traditional Nigerian snacks for processed and refined biscuits, cookies, and cakes.

Here are some healthy Nigeria snacks we overlook
Cashew nuts: Cashews nuts are rich in protein and other nutrients and can offer some health benefits. They can help boost bone strength and heart health.

The monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids found in cashews can help decrease LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

The acids reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and heart attack.

Boli(plantain): Boli is a roasted plantain dish in Nigeria. It is native to the Yoruba people of Nigeria.

They are diuretics and can help prevent kidney and bladder problems. They also ease the discomfort associated with the menstrual period.

It is highly recommended for weight-conscious individuals who wish to maintain a healthy weight.

Coconut: Rich in fibre and MCTs, it offers several benefits, including improved heart health, weight loss, and digestion. Yet, it’s high in calories and saturated fat, so you should eat it in moderation. It gives you better oral health.

Tiger nuts: Tiger nuts are rich in heart-healthy fats. They improve vein and artery flexibility and blood circulation, which reduces the risk of heart disease.

It treats erectile dysfunction, fights bacterial infections, regulates blood pressure, and aids digestion.

Culture / Brief History Of Idemili In Igbo Land by Adaidemili: 4:45pm On Mar 24, 2022
The history of how the inhabitants of Idemili began to worship small pythons may be traced back to the Idemili River, which runs through cities such as Obosi, Ogidi, and Ojoto and is part of a network.

The name Idemili is taken from the river, which is home to the snake Eke Idemili. The snake is revered by the inhabitants of Idemili as a representation of their god and hence a keeper of their culture and heritage.

When a baby is born in Idemili, the small python creeps to the spot where the newborn is kept and harmlessly cuddles around the child, much to the delight of the parents. It was also learned that the snake’s visit to people’s houses might represent a variety of things, since the snake is considered to have the ability to convey either good or terrible news.

The World Health Organization (WHO) commemorated World Tuberculosis Day 2022 today, Thursday, March 24.

World TB Day is commemorated on March 24 each year to improve public awareness and understanding of one of the world’s deadliest infectious illnesses, as well as its catastrophic health, social, and economic implications.

This year’s theme, “Spend to Eliminate TB. Save Lives,” stresses the urgent need to invest the resources needed to ratchet up the battle against TB and fulfill global leaders’ promises to end TB.

Health / Surviving Kidney Disease In Africa by Adaidemili: 9:14am On Mar 23, 2022
Kidney disease means that your kidneys are damaged and unable to filter blood as effectively as they should.

If you have diabetes or high blood pressure, you’re more likely to develop kidney disease. If you have renal failure, dialysis or a kidney transplant are two options for therapy.

What are the most common reasons for kidney disease?

Chronic renal disease is most commonly caused by diabetes and high blood pressure (CKD).

A patient’s medical history is reviewed, and necessary tests are carried out to determine the extent of the patient’s kidney disease. The type of treatment the patient receives is determined by the aetiology of the patients’ kidney disease.

Chronic kidney disease or CKD is a progressive condition that reduces kidney function (basically its ability to filter waste from the blood). Chronic kidney disease often has no symptoms in its early stages and can go undetected in most people until it is in its advanced stages.

In this late or advanced stage of CKD, an individual can develop kidney failure and require dialysis or a kidney transplant to maintain life; at this stage, a CKD patient can lose up to 85-90% of their kidney function; not enough to keep the person alive, without medical intervention.

Chronic kidney disease is also known as end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) or end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Without the kidneys playing their vital role, substances that should otherwise be filtered rather builds up in the body. The patient falls severely ill; this is also when symptoms become glaring.

What are some of the most prevalent signs of kidney disease?

People notice signs like being weary, having less energy, or having difficulty concentrating. Patients may have sleeping difficulties, their skin gets dry and itchy, and the patient may need to urinate more frequently. Sometimes, a patient’s urine may contain blood, or the urine may have a frothy consistency or urine with lots of bubbles.

Puffiness may occur around the eyes and becomes a recurring problem. The feet and ankles are not left out as they get swollen, patients’ muscles become tense, and appetites are lost during the stages.

Dialysis for Kidney treatment

The theory behind dialysis is that it replaces the kidney’s functions by removing waste and excess fluid from the blood. A dialysis session will be necessary At least two or three times a week, for 3-5 hours at a designated dialysis centre.

Dialysis is a medical technique in which a nephrologist temporarily or permanently takes over the function of the kidney by eliminating waste products, poisons, excess electrolytes, and excess water from the circulation.

Health / Understanding The Facts On HIV And AIDS by Adaidemili: 9:05am On Mar 23, 2022
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system. Untreated HIV can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome); this is why learning the basics about HIV can keep you healthy and prevent HIV transmission.

How Can You Tell If You Have HIV?
Testing is the only way to know for sure if you have HIV. You can not tell if you have HIV just by looking at your symptoms. Knowing your HIV status provides you with valuable information to help you and your partner(s) stay healthy.

If you test positive for HIV, you can begin treatment right away. You can reduce the quantity of HIV in your blood (your viral load) to such a low level that a test would not identify if you take HIV treatment as directed every day; this event is called an undetectable viral load.

Furthermore, taking treatment is the best way to stay healthy and achieve an undetectable viral load. You have virtually little chance of transmitting HIV to an HIV-negative partner if your viral load remains undetectable.

If you test negative for HIV, why worry? There are now more HIV prevention options than ever before.

HIV self-testing is also an option. Self-testing allows people to conduct an HIV test in their own home or other private location.

You can buy a self-test kit at a pharmacy or online, or your health care provider may be able to order one for you. Some health departments or community-based organizations also provide self-test kits for free.
