Politics / Re: Let Us Put Our House In Order, Says Obasanjo ! by Ade2K8(m): 2:59am On Aug 26, 2010
The former president said that when he was in office, “my friend, a European, said ‘capitalism is designed by us for ourselves, and not designed by us for you’ and I asked him ‘what do you mean?’ He said to me that capitalism is exploitative and he said to me, ‘give me a reason why I should buy your tonne of cocoa at $100, when I can buy it for $50 and also send it back to you for $2000?’

“I said the reason is in the interest of common humanity, and he told me that there is nowhere common humanity is written in economic books. So, what he is saying is that see, ‘Segun, capitalism means best for me and the worse for you.’ So, if that is what it means, let us get the best for ourselves. We are not even saying worst for others, but let us get the best for ourselves,” he said.

I see nothing wrong with this person's definition of capitalism. If everyone does for himself, some will win and some will lose. Those who lose will learn to play a better game next time. Capitalism survives because it is closest to man's true nature. All other social constructs have failed. The issue is that the state must be a fair referee and enforce legal contracts fairly. The state must also play it's part in building a social welfare structure to assist those down on their luck. This is how you build a society with a steadily growing middle class without throwing the rest under the bridge.

Sports / Re: What's Wrong With All The African Teams? by Ade2K8(m): 5:49pm On Jun 20, 2010
The performance of the African teams is only a reflection of their backgrounds i.e. what's going on in their respective countries. As one of the posts indicate, corruption, tribalism, individuality at the expense of the team and lack of infrastructure can be of no help in building a winning team. Furthermore, failed or failing states cannot hope to perform well. Lastly, constantly hiring overpaid white men only shows our dementia - we keep doing the same things but expect different results. The coaches are working with damaged goods - they aren't magicians. At least a local can better navigate the undercurrents within a "team".
Politics / Quit Crying About Your Country!!! These Will Soon Be The Good Old Days Unless... by Ade2K8(m): 4:45am On Jun 17, 2010
Please, guys & gals, besides talking and blogging, what real, practical solutions can we advance to stop what's going on in Naija and point the country towards real growth, security and prosperity ? The obvious fact is that the country is in the grip of educated illiterates, small-minded men, thieves and murderers. It therefore cannot surprise us that things are as they are.

But guess what - they WILL only get worse !!! If we continue to talk w/o a plan of action, then the saying becomes true - "a people deserve the govt they have". D.V. the govt we will have will be a govt that respects us; better still, one that fears us enough to stop despoiling us all. You think N250MM is jaw dropping as a quarterly allowance ? Wait a few years and it'll be N1B, yes, billion. As far as I'm concerned N15MM per year ($100k/yr) is more than enough, and that should cover ALL their expenses, including their paid assassins.

The national stage (and the states too) reflects a famine of of decent capable men and women. Jonathan (and PDP) obviously have no plans for a greater, better Nigeria, in spite of all the nice words uttered in front of cameras.

Therefore, what will WE THE PEOPLE do? After all, it's our country too!!! Or will we rather be "intellectually lazy" like IBB characterises us? So, please post your proposals for real, practical action to rid us of the contagion pretending to lead us and  instead install conscientious people. At a minimum, it should meet the following criteria:
1. no "pie in the sky"  or largely academic plans
2. be cognizant of naija culture/values (at least the bit that still remains unavailable for sale)
3. take into account the current politics on the ground and expected countermeasures by our common enemies

I'll implement your well thought out plans at my own time.

In closing, I'm reminded of a line in a church song  - "O Lord (sic), Save us from weak capitulation to the evils we deplore".
Business To Business / Do You Need Items From The U.S. ? by Ade2K8(m): 7:01am On Jun 12, 2010
Do you need to source items from the US ? If so, contact me - perhaps I can be of assistance. I'll find what you need at the best price possible and ship to you. For my time, I'll charge a very small fee as I'm rather looking to build on volume of satisfied customers. Thanks

Thank you bk/babe97!! The logic of some people is simply astonishing. Regardless of what it used to mean 1 billion years ago or whenever, today it means something completely different and heinous. And for this man to display this in our midst with some of us actually supporting him is just jaw-dropping!!
Politics / Re: Reps Demand Raise From N27.2 Million To N42 Million Per Quarter by Ade2K8(m): 2:21am On May 31, 2010
Nigeria is the only nation on earth where 100% of the legislators are millionaires, and become so within 1 year of stealing office. Even the states are aping the behavior of the National Assemblage of Thieves.  Our country is the grip of common thugs, murderers, child-molesters and assorted omo-alatas. It will remain in their grip until we develop the spine to do as they do in Thailand. Why will they stop at a 68% salary increase? In a few years, if the country still exists, they'll all be billionaires, And why not? We engage in absolutely no civic action, so they never really see our anger. Or feel it. In a country where we still have little children hawking bread and plantain in the streets, these vermin are buying SUVs for themselves to visit their constituents rather than ensuring the roads are decent;  the sheer irony would be laughable if it didn't make you want to cry. God will only help us if we care enough to help ourselves.
Politics / Re: Swastikas At Lekki by Ade2K8(m): 8:11pm On May 30, 2010
But don't you see - regardless of the signs original intent or origins, today, people associate it with hatred, racism and murder. While the Jews were the primary target of the Nazis, does anyone think the Nazis may have been in love with blacks? The fact is that displaying this in a black country truly shows what this man intends to convey - that he holds blacks in contempt (as indeed, I suspect most Indians do).
Politics / Swastikas At Lekki by Ade2K8(m): 7:11pm On May 30, 2010
A friend just sent me this post - amazing what happens in Lagos, as usual, with our implicit consent.

On a serene street, located within the high-brow Lekki Peninsula, a swastika - the emblem of the infamous German Nazi party - is now brazenly displayed on the walls of a property in the area, and the neighbours are angry.

Bola Odunlami who lives a few blocks from this house said he is constantly traumatised and outraged whenever he drives past the symbol. His anger is shared by a large number of people in the neighbourhood.

“It’s most annoying that I’m subjected to the torture of seeing this sign on a house in Lekki, Lagos on the street I live and I hear it was put there by an Indian,” he said.

“What height of insensitivity! I have an idea what it means to a Hindi but this is Lagos and we are predominantly blacks and naturally hate that sign in view of how it relates to us and that fact must be respected. It could have a positive meaning in India but that is India.” He said, “In as much as I’m aware of its alleged positive significance in certain cultures, in the face of globalisation and political correctness, its meaning is mostly negative. We all know what it means to the Jews and to me a Black man. The white ‘supremacy’ movements relished the Swastika and brandished it in those dark days whilst they killed and raped. This lack of insensitivity can breed hatred and incite people to react in a manner that can snowball into attacks in this relatively peaceful community.”

Sheyi Abiodun, who also resides on the street, finds the sign disturbing, and believes that Mr. Khurana ought to respect public indignation and put it away from public view.

“I feel it is morally wrong for him to have that kind of sign exposed to the public,” he said. “Even if the sign means something different to him, the fact is that the swastika has a negative connotation for many people. He better put it inside his house, and away from the public.”

It is my property

The Indian who owns the building, and who gave his name as B.S Khurana, is indignant that his neighbours are complaining, and insists that it is within his rights to display a sign which he claims is not the Nazi version.

“We are very peaceful here; there is a school, and a dog is there, in the next compound, there are six dogs; and when they start barking, I don’t sleep,” he said. “And now, I put a sign in front of my own compound and they are complaining. What about the tankers that makes noise early in the morning?”

He said, “There is something like human rights. This is my compound; my house; and my gate, and I have the right to put anything I want on my gate. The sign is not a Muslim or Christian sign; neither have I put a monster there.

The swastika sign is just like saying ‘good luck’ just like you say ‘Insha Allah’ or ‘God willing.’ This is not the swastika that was used by the German Nazi during the Second World War. I have lived in this country for 40 years, and have not had any trouble from anybody. It is my right,” added Mr. Khurana.

The position of the law

Eme Ochee, a lawyer, agrees that Mr. Khurana is within his rights to display symbols that hold cultural or religious connotations, but cautions that there is a need to weigh public interest against personal convictions.

“He has the right to display whatever symbols he wants in his own property, but then where your right ends; another person’s begins,” he said. “Agreed that the swastika in question is not the Nazi symbol, the fact is that the over-riding emotion that people get on seeing any swastika is that of revulsion. Therefore the neighbours are right to feel traumatized by daily seeing what they see as an offensive symbol.”

The communal spirit

A sociologist, Uwadiegwu Otisi, believes that Mr. Khurana’s neighbours are justified in their indignation; and cautions that citizens should be wary of actions that spark off public unrest.

“Human beings are communal animals; therefore, efforts should always be made to continually avoid upsetting the balance,” he said. “The man certainly has the right to do whatever he wants with his private property, but if neighbours are complaining, he should be reasonable. After all, consenting adults have the right to have sex; but do they have to offend the public by doing it in public view? My advice for the said Indian is that, for the interest of peace and neighbourliness, the symbol should be relocated to inside his compound.”

And that, it seems, is all that the neighbourhood is asking. “The debate on whether it is within his rights to put up the sign may be to the man’s advantage when we look into our laws but it’s a moral issue,” said Mr. Odunlami.

Just curious - when (if ever) will this tribal hatred cease? Seems to me we all have a common enemy - the thieves in govt. Ego and the need to belittle the other guy just shows our general immaturity & this immaturity is really a major part of our collective problems
Politics / Re: When Are Nigerians Going To Stop Complaining And Start Doing? by Ade2K8(m): 8:42pm On May 22, 2010
@MandingoII

Agree with you totally - although not sure why you disagree with the Thailand route;  it's absolutely what we need to do.  It's been said that a people get the govt they deserve - and it's amply true in Nigeria. We complain, hiss, curse and do absolutely nothing. A few protests here and there are a good start but we need sustained civic action to put some fear into our so-called leaders. But like Fela said in one of his songs (forget which) - "my people sef too fear,  i no wan die, i just build house, i wan chop small, pickin dey for school"   As long as we wait for the other guy to act first, we are trapped in inertia.

It's really sad that rather than be happy about this development and commend this sweet girl for her patriotism and guts, some of us are more interested in her tribe; yes, I too would truly like to hear what mekusxxx or even EzeUche will have to say; hopefully they won't try and kill her because she's from the Yoruba tribe they hate so much and wish would bow down to them!!!

@poster - are you sure she's 23? the link you added says she's worked for the NHS for 10yrs - the math doesn't work
Politics / Millionaires All ! - Robbing The Treasury Via Constuency Allocations by Ade2K8(m): 3:45pm On May 16, 2010
Recently discovered that practically all our state and national legislators are millionaires via this incredible "legislative" stunt. When GJ had declared his assets a long while back, he'd indicated that he had approx $5MM. I remember thinking at the time that he seemed like a decent guy and wondered how he'd come about such a sum as he did not run any business I knew of. Apparently, this is perhaps (of course, not sure) his share of the constituency allocations (C.A.) since they share themselves every quarter to the tune of $300K/per qtr per year (state) and $600K/qtr/year (Federal - per 234next.com a few weeks back). Although we'll all get angry, it's true that the citizens of any country get the govt they deserve - this seems especially true in Naija. How I wish we had half the spine of the guys in Thailand. I'm hopeful that in the not-too-distant future, we can really have a people's party, where people who actually have an ounce of intergrity can come together for the national good.
Politics / Re: White Students Trick Black S.africans To Eat Stew With Urine(a Must Read) by Ade2K8(m): 8:54pm On Mar 01, 2008
"I still believe that the black man is striving too hard to be accepted by the white man while the white man MOSTLY relaxes and has a laugh at the effort of some learned black people to get accepted as equals.

These students did it as a protest- because black people were being allowed into a hall of residence. Al this happening in AFRICA!!!

In Europe, what you hear is that if you don't like something as a black man, you should get out and return to Africa. Nobody is saying same to white south Africans who control the SA economy.
"

Blatant - I couldn't agree with you more; blacks, particularly Eastern & Sothern Africans are so busy falling all over themselves begging for white acceptance. I think it's the inferiority complex that often afflicts other races that grow up arround whites. But in SA, imagine !!! A minority dictating what he wants - walai !!!. Why are there no black brothers who can find these assholes and kick there asses ? No need for police or demonstrations. But of course, the black SAs are afraid of the whiteman & the oyinbo man takes full advantage of it. It's soooo sad.
Business / Re: "You Can't Ban Spraying, It's Our Culture" - KSA To Soludo by Ade2K8(m): 5:18am On Feb 21, 2008
With a little luck, this person called Charles Soludo will be sooner than later, be fired. First it was with the decimal places, now it's with spraying. KSA is right, it is part of our culture - but that's ultimately beside the point - THE BUSINESS OF THE CBN (AND BY IMPLICATION, ITS GOVERNOR,) IS GIVING US SOUND MONEY - and all that that implies: fighting inflation, managing interest rates given govt economic activity, etc. NOT chasing sprayers from pillar to post. I know he did not pass the law, but given the type of mind he appears to have, his input probably was as foolish as this so-called law. We already know we can't expect much common sense from the horde of thieving illiterates in the National Assembly. Hopefully someone physically in Nigeria will sucessfully challenge this idiocy of a law. The simple fact is that I can abuse my own property as long as I don't put anyone else in danger, don't scamanyone and I clean up my litter - so I can tear my own house down or withdraw all MY money and shred or burn it. The naira in my possession is not the property of the FGN or CBN, it not on loan or lease from either party!!!
