![]() A Boeing 777 aircraft that crash-landed at San Francisco airport killing two people did not have mechanical problems, an airline official has said. The head of the South Korean airline Asiana, Yoon Young-doo, did not rule out human error but said the pilots were experienced veterans. Most of the 307 people on board were injured, 49 of them seriously. The plane came down short of the runway, ripping off its tail, after apparently hitting a sea wall, reports the BBC. One survivor said the plane came in to land too fast and too low, but there was no warning of problems. Passengers and crew escaped down emergency slides as it burst into flames. Yoon apologised "deeply" for the effect the accident had had on all those involved, bowing in front of TV cameras at a Seoul news conference. He said there was no emergency alarm and the crew had made the usual requests to passengers to fasten their seatbelts to prepare for landing. "Currently we understand that there were no engine or mechanical problems," he said. The pilots were veterans, he added, and one had more than 10,000 flying hours. Asiana confirmed that two female Chinese teenagers died in the crash. They had been seated at the back of the aircraft. They are believed to be the first-ever fatalities in a Boeing 777 crash. The twin-engine aircraft has a good safety record for long-haul and is used by many major carriers. The only previous notable crash occurred when a British Airways plane landed short of the runway at London's Heathrow Airport in 2008. ![]() JOHANNESBURG (AFP) – A South African traditional king will try to revoke the chieftaincy of Nelson Mandela’s grandson Mandla after a bitter family feud over gravesites, South African media reported Sunday. King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo, the Xhosa king who rules the Thembu tribe to which the Mandela family belongs, accused Mandla Mandela of disgracing the family after the younger Mandela launched a nationally-televised tirade against his relatives and the king. “Mandla has never been the legitimate heir of the Madiba family,” he told City Press newspaper, using the Mandela clan name. “I will write to him and tell him that my wish is that he is not involved in any of the affairs,” he added. Nelson Mandela handpicked Mandla, 39, as his successor to head the Madiba clan in 2007. Dalindyebo’s spokeswoman told the Sunday Times incorrect processes had been followed to install Mandla. But the king himself is under fire from several chiefs who want him removed, according to South Africa’s Sunday Times. The 59-year-old is appealing a 2009 conviction of kidnapping and culpable homicide of subjects accused of criminal acts. Dalindyebo had previously accused Mandla of trying to usurp him, but Mandla spoke dismissively of the monarch this week. “I don’t want to waste my time with people who obviously don’t understand issues because they are uneducated,” he said. However, the royal family can only recommend a chief’s removal to the political government, which has the final say. “The king can’t do so on his own and the king can’t just choose who should succeed the chief,” Zingisa Bokwe, secretary of the Eastern Cape province’s House of Traditional Leaders, told City Press. As the 94-year-old anti-apartheid hero lies critically ill in hospital, a fierce family feud over the gravesites of his three deceased children has erupted. Fifteen family members won a court order on Wednesday against Mandla after he moved the graves two years ago without their consent. As the ailing Mandela approaches the end of his life, they accused Mandla of moving the graves to his homestead so that his grandfather would be buried there. Nelson Mandela has often said he wants to be laid to rest in his childhood village of Qunu in the rural south. Source: http://adevision..com/2013/07/xhosa-king-wants-mandela-grandsons.html |

President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday inaugurated the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, with a pledge that the N167bn project would be completed in 48 months. He inaugurated the project as thousands of road users were grounded for about three hours on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and Abeokuta-Ore-Benin Expressway. The road users were prevented from accessing the Sagamu interchange until the ceremony ended around 12.15pm and the President left in a helicopter. The reconstruction of the 35-year-old road is being handled by Messrs Julius Berger Plc and Reynolds Construction Company Ltd. While the former takes charge of work from the interchange at Sagamu to Lagos, the latter will take care of the portion from the interchange to Ibadan. While the lanes on both expressways were blocked with armoured personnel carriers, armed security agents were deployed around the interchange to check human and vehicular movement. Some of the commuters who spoke with our correspondent said they were not aware that the President had an assignment at the interchange and were caught unawares by the gridlock. They blamed the President for adding to their hardship on both roads. A motorist, who identified himself as Kunle Daramola, said commuters should have been warned beforehand to tarry a little for the ceremony to end before commencing their journeys. He said, “My wife and I were to join my brother in Ibadan. He is taking his bride to the registry this morning. Now, we are stranded here and to worsen the case, I am standing in for our father as the first born. He has been calling me since but there is nothing I can do now despite the fact that we left very early to beat the traffic. It is not fair at all.” A commercial bus driver, who identified himself as Allah Dey, was very furious when he was narrating his ordeal to our correspondent. He said, “When we saw about three helicopters flying a moment ago, we were thinking that maybe something serious had happened until someone said it was because of the President. I don’t know why they have to block the roads when the President is not travelling by road. “Now that they are blocking the roads just to signal the commencement of construction, what will they do when they finish work on the road?” The President, who flew to the interchange in a Nigeria Air Force helicopter, was accompanied to the venue by the Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, and Lagos State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire. Apart from the NAF chopper, two others belonging to the Nigerian Army were part of the President’s fleet. The President said he was delighted that at last, work was beginning on the road and promised to deliver. Jonathan said the rehabilitation of the road was long overdue considering the fact that it connects Lagos, the economic nerve centre of Nigeria, to other parts of the country. The President stated that 50 per cent of the economic transactions being conducted in the country were done between Lagos – Ogun area through the 35-year-old road. Acknowledging that the 127.8km road was long overdue for reconstruction, the President also promised that the Federal Government would intervene in the rehabilitation of other federal roads traversing Ogun State as requested by Amosun. He said that the Federal Government in 2009 entered into a concession agreement with a concessionaire, Bi-Courtney Highway Services, as a premier Public Private Partnership scheme. He stated that the concession was terminated four years later due to non-performance by the firm. Earlier in his speech, Amosun urged the President to pay attention to other federal roads in Ogun State to complement the state efforts in rehabilitating the roads in the state. He advised the Federal Government to ensure that the N167bn to be expended on the rehabilitation of the road did not become a waste of scarce resources. He urged the FG to put in place a sustainable maintenance arrangement for the highway. He attributed the deplorable condition of many infrastructural facilities across the country to the carelessness and bad maintenance culture among Nigerians, adding that Jonathan should direct the Federal Ministry of Works to employ more workers for the maintenance of the road. Both the President and Amosun performed a symbolic construction work when they climbed one of the construction equipment and drove it for a distance. The Federal Government had, in November 2012, revoked the failed Lagos-Ibadan Expressway concession contract awarded to Bi-Courtney Highway Services Limited in 2009. In the concession agreement with Bi-Courtney Highway Services Ltd, which was terminated on November 19, 2012, the firm was to expand the lanes to 10 from Lagos to Sagamu, and six lanes from Sagamu to Ibadan. It was also expected to build trailer parks and five interchanges among other things at a cost of N89.5bn. Source: http://adevision..com/2013/07/lagos-ibadan-expressway-project-to-last.html |

CAIRO (AFP) – Liberal opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei has been chosen as Egypt’s new prime minister, the Tamarod campaign behind the protests that toppled Islamist president Mohamed Morsi said on Saturday after talks with the country’s interim president. A military source confirmed to AFP that the former UN nuclear watchdog chief was to be sworn in as premier later on Saturday, three days after the army overthrew Morsi. The official MENA news agency said ElBaradei was in talks with interim leader Adly Mansour. Tamarod had nominated ElBaradei to represent the movement in transition negotiations with the military. ElBaradei, who won the Nobel peace prize in 2005 for his work with International Atomic Energy Agency, returned to Egypt in 2010 and became a prominent opponent of veteran strongman Hosni Mubarak in the lead-up to the 2011 uprising that overthrew him. PRETORIA (AFP) – Nelson Mandela remained in a “critical but stable” condition Monday, the presidency said, more than three weeks after the anti-apartheid hero was hospitalised with a recurring lung infection even as President Jacob Zuma urged South Africans to begin planning for Mandela’s 95th birthday on July 18. “We must all be able to do something good for humanity on this day, in tribute to our former president,” he said in a statement. The update came hours after US President Barack Obama left South Africa without seeing his personal hero, who has been in intensive care since June 8. Obama spent the weekend paying homage to Mandela, including a trip to the Robben Island prison where the man who would become South Africa’s first black president was locked up for 18 years — a visit he said left him “deeply humbled”. Obama also spoke to Mandela’s wife Graca Machel by telephone, and met several daughters and grandchildren of the ailing icon to offer support and prayers. But he decided against rolling up in his massive entourage at the Pretoria hospital where Mandela lies, worried that he would disturb the peace of the man he has described as a “personal inspiration”. Once branded a terrorist by the United States and Britain, Mandela spent 27 years in prison before walking free from a jail near Cape Town in 1990. He won South Africa’s first fully democratic elections in 1994, forging a path of racial reconciliation during his single term as president, before taking up a new role as a roving elder statesman and leading AIDS campaigner. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have reportedly named their daughter Kaidence Donda West. The reality TV star gave birth to the couple’s first child on Saturday (15.06.13) in Los Angeles, California, and a loose-lipped nurse at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the hospital where she had her baby, has allegedly revealed their new arrival’s name. According to gossip website MediaTakeOut.com, Kim and Kanye have settled on calling their daughter Kaidence, which would follow the Kardashian family tradition of naming daughters with the letter ‘K’. Meanwhile, the newborn’s middle name is a tribute to the ‘All of the Lights’ rapper’s late mother Donda West, who died in November 2007. Kanye, 36, was incredibly close to his mother and even penned a tribute song about her, titled ‘Hey Mama’, for his 2005 album ‘Late Registration’. Kim, 32, was due to give birth in mid-July but had her baby five weeks early after experiencing an early onset of labour pains on Friday evening (14.06.13). The star’s sister Khloe Kardashian-Odom said both mother and baby are doing well. She wrote on Twitter: “I can not even begin 2 describe the miracle that is now apart of our family. Mommy/baby are healthy & resting. We appreciate all of the love. “More info will come when the time is right! Thank you all for understanding! We love you all dearly! Overwhelmed with love right now. Aids Healthcare Foundation (a staunch advocate in the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS in the Country), has intensified her monthly condom access, education and advocacy initiative; one of the organization’s strategies for reducing the high rate of HIV prevalence in Nigeria. This initiative sees the positioning of condom dispensers and baskets in strategic places in the FCT (e.g. Hotels, Brothels, ''relaxation joints'', etc.), in a conscious attempt to bring condom(s) closer to the people, especially those who cannot afford or access it conveniently. This outreach goes a step further to raise awareness on the importance of practicing safe sex, which cannot be overemphasized. (a staunch advocate in the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS in the Country), By the month of May, 2013, AHF condom filled dispensers and baskets have been placed in a total of Twenty-six (26) outlets; at various locations in the Federal Capital Territory. Twenty five Thousand Four Hundred and Twelve (25,412) condoms were distributed. RESPONSE FROM THE BENEFICIARIES This initiative has been lauded by hotel managements and individuals from the various outlets as a significant step in the right direction towards the fight against HIV/AIDS in Nigeria and they promised to utilize this opportunity efficiently and effectively. The management of Infinity hotel located in Karmo (a suburb in the FCT)in a response to the development, welcomed the idea and advised that it should be sustained; especially in areas like theirs where condoms cannot be easily accessed. Places like Divine Moscow Hotel, Maryland Hotel, Agodo Guest-Inn, Power House Hotel, Parapet Hotel, Hope rising Hotel,Jimi Hotel,Shehaggy's Hotel,Freeman Entertainment Garden, to mention but a few, shared a similar view and recommended that the Government and other NGO’s emulate this practice. All of these point towards the growing presence of AHF preventive advocacy measures and her commitment towards reducing HIV transmission in Nigeria. There is no gainsaying that since the start of the global HIV/AIDS pandemic in early 1980s, various Organizations, and HIV/AIDS activist groups have continuously advocated for the use of evidence based prevention strategies (such as promoting the consistent and correct use of condoms ) to control viral transmission. The body of evidence that supports the effectiveness of condoms in preventing HIV transmission is overwhelming. It has been proven in various Countries that the use of condoms have helped to reduce HIV transmission and encouraged safer sexual behaviour. According to UNFPA “Thailand's efforts to de-stigmatize condoms and its targeted condom promotion for sex workers and their clients dramatically reduced HIV infections in these populations and helped reduce the spread of the epidemic to the general population. A similar policy in Cambodia has helped stabilize national prevalence, while substantially decreasing prevalence was observed among sex workers. In addition, Brazil's early and vigorous condom promotion among the general population and vulnerable groups successfully contributed to sustained control of the HIV epidemic. Increased condom use is believed to be a contributing factor in the decline in HIV prevalence reported in Zimbabwe between 2003 and 2005” In the light of the above, it is important for Nigerians who are sexually active to practice safe sex, as one of the precautionary measures for decreasing the spread of HIV/AIDS in the Country (a practice AHF strongly supports).Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa, and consequently, has one of the largest populations of people living with HIV in the world; second only to South Africa. v Aids Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is a global organization providing cutting-edge medicine and advocacy to more than 200,000 patients in 28 countries. The organisation is the largest provider of HIV/AIDS medical care in the U.S, with headquarters in Los Angeles. Leading telecommunications operator, Airtel Nigeria, has introduced a dual-purpose single recharge card for both voice and data services on the network that will allow customers to recharge for both services with only one recharge card. The Single Recharge Option, another first in the industry by Airtel, is available in both physical and electronic recharge formats. The physical recharge card comes in N100, N500 and N5000 denominations, while the electronic pin (paper) option are available in denominations of N100, N200, N500, N1000, N2000 and N5000. For the Single Recharge, the old process of recharge for the Airtel voice service still suffices as customers are to dial *126* followed by the Recharge PIN and then #. However, to subscribe for data service on the same recharge card, customers will need to dial *143* followed by Recharge PIN and #. The Single Recharge Option also attracts applicable bonus rates for data subscription depending on the amount of airtime purchased. When customers load between N100 and N500, they will enjoy 60% data bonus while subscription of N1, 000 to N5, 000 attracts for 30 percent data bonus. Speaking on latest innovation, the Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director, Airtel Nigeria, Deepak Srivastava, said the latest recharge option further buttresses the company’s commitment to continually offer Nigerians innovative products tailored to provide them a whole world of value and convenience. He pledged Airtel relentless drive to deliver fresh and cutting-edge telecoms technology so to ensure that its customers continue to enjoy first-rate products and services, adding that Single Recharge is another great reason to be on the Airtel network, especially coming at a time when Mobile Number Portability (MNP) allows customers to move over to Airtel for the conveniences that it offers its customers. “The Airtel Single Recharge is simply a double victory for our customers because we have single-handedly, eliminated the multiple processes of recharging or subscribing for voice and data services separately, by merging the two procedures to produce a single and seamless recharge process for both services using a single step. This is not only unique but revolutionary, and can only come from a network that has got Nigerians proudly covered”, he said. The Airtel Single Recharge, which is for both prepaid and postpaid customers, also provides additional advantage for data customers as it totally eliminates the process of subscribing for data using USSD or SMS codes. Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State has called for the establishment of a panel to probe the riot that erupted in the University Of Uyo (UNIUYO), resulting in property damage of millions of Naira, so as to bring the culprits to book. On Wednesday, students of the Department of Engineering staged a demonstration to the Office of the Vice-Chancellor to protest the hike in the transport fare from the institution's town campus to the permanent campus. The peaceful protest however turned awry: two students were reported to have been killed; the offices of the Vice Chancellor and the Deputy Vice Chancellor were torched; and several cars and the security post were vandalised. The worst hit was the university's Examinations and Records Department, which was set ablaze. The department maintains academic records, especially the transcripts of students who graduated from the defunct College of Education, Uyo; the defunct University of Cross River State; the present University of Uyo; and the Unified Matriculation Tertiary Examination. The governor, who was conducted round the scene of the incident on Thursday by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Comfort Ekpo, in the company of Deputy Vice Chancellors Paul Ekwere and Okon Ansa, described the riot as criminal, targeted and pre-meditated. He said that the miscreants took undue advantage of the disagreement at the institution, and that the students targeted the destruction of the school's academic records and policies, saying that it was a pre-planned arrangement by the miscreants who pretended to be students of the institution. "This act is a disaster,” Chief Akpabio declared. “My observation here is that the destruction of the buildings was targeted at the 20-year-old school records and examination results. It was a pre-planned arrangement by miscreants who are professional “students” using the opportunity of the peaceful protest to raze down buildings where the school's academic records were kept." Akpabio called on the Nigerian police to carry out a thorough investigation into the case, and suggested the involvement of President Goodluck Jonathan, who is the Visitor, as well as the Minister of Education, in getting to the root cause of the matter. The governor expressed his sympathies with the institution over the sad incident, and pledged the state government’s readiness to build and hand over two hostels to the university as soon as the institution allocates a site for the project. In her remarks, Professor Ekpo explained how the institution had decided on the increase of the transport fare from N100 to N200 from the town campus to the permanent campus after the students. The President of the Students' Union Government, Lucky Imo Inyang and the Vice President of National Association of Nigerian Students, Comrade Ubon Marcus, expressed their regrets about the incident, blaming it on miscreants who hijacked the peaceful demonstration by the students. ![]() Tributes are still pouring in for late highlife legend, Fatai Rolling Dollars, who passed away on Wednesday, June 12, after a protracted battle with cancer of the lungs. Below are excerpts: We will all miss him-Tee Mak Omatsola Iseli We will all miss him. I have known him since the 70s. He was a great musician and I shared stages with him a number of times. I enjoyed watching him play at O’jez on so many occasions. During the period when he was down, I searched for him for so many years and when he returned I was glad to reunite with him again. We will miss him for a long time to come. We will immortalize him-Femi Esho, record label boss I met him many years ago. We became closer when we discovered him and took him to O’jez, Iwaya. He is a wonderful musician, one of the greatest guitarist we have ever had in the country. He could transit with his guitar from highlife to Juju very easily. We are planning to immortalise him and we are discussing with his friends. I was not surprised that he is dead because I knew about his ailment some four months ago. We had a show in January where he was supposed to perform but he couldn’t make it. When he was to travel a few months ago, I persuaded him not to go. And since he came back from the USA, he has been hospitalised. I still spoke to him on Sunday so his death was not a shock to me. I’ll miss his cordiality. He is almost 50 years older than me but he was so humble and polite. We shall meet again never to part-Jide Morohunfolu, TV presenter Fatai Omo Olagunju, you’re one of the few men who never feared death. You knew it would come one day and that’s what you always told me. Baba, your second chance is over. Bye till we meet never to part again He was a custodian of music-Kunle Tejuosho, record label boss Baba was a great musician. He lived the life of a musician. He was always happy to perform. Maybe he took too much on. He was a great guy who enjoyed life to the fullest. He had a second chance which he used very well. He would be missed because he brought the past to the present through his music; he was a great music custodian. His death is a great loss-Pa Orlando Julius It is so sad because on Saturday morning, Latoya was listening to Raypower when they reported that he was in hospital and needed N29, 000 before they could discharge him so I called his number and his wife picked and gave it to him. He told me to ignore the reports that he was hale and hearty and had been discharged already. I was so happy to hear his voice because there’s a lot of songs that I have recorded for him and we had been discussing the release. And then today I was at Alianz Francais when we got the news and we were crying, Latoya and I. for over an hour I couldn’t drive my car. He is one of our legends. He made people happy and touched lives with his music. I am very sure the family will release the songs because I will hand over everything to them; it could give them financial support in the long run. We will miss a lot about him especially his unreleased music. We have come a long way. He and IK Dairo belong to the same class; may his soul rest in peace. He played free at my father’s funeral-Yomi Opakunle, ex-manafer My joy is that God turned his life around when I managed him through great men like Ashiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Babatunde Fashola among a host of corporate entities, artistes, the media and organizations who stood by him. I won’t forget soon how he played free at my late father’s 70th birthday. He had such a benevolent heart. I am in shock-Yeni Kuti I am really sad about it. The last time I saw him was at Freedom Park when his documentary aired. Please I am so sad I can’t talk now. Nigeria has lost a great treasure-Femi Odugbemi I am so sad. It’s a day that was bound to come. Though he was not young, he was one of those treasures you hope will always be around. He was an amazing talent and artiste who put all he had in his act. It’s interesting that he died on June 12 because Nigeria seems to lose its best on June 12. He did not live his age and had the vision and talent of a great mind. There was a mild drama at Sabo Magistrate’s Court when a 30-year-old man, Ayo Ogori, was arraigned for allegedly assaulting a police officer, Isadare Abiodun, by pouring garri ( Cassava flakes) on him. Ogori, who was arraigned on two counts of assault, was said to have committed the offence at Ebute Ilaje, Bariga area of Lagos. However, the magistrate, Mrs. Folarin Williams, interrupted the proceeding, saying there were some inconsistencies in the charge sheet drafted by the prosecutor, Mrs. Nike Abudu. The charge sheet read in part, “That you, Ayo Ogori, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did unlawfully assault one Isadare Abiodun by pouring a substance suspected to be garri on his police uniform.” The offence was said to have breached section 166 of the criminal law of Lagos State Nigeria, 2011. The magistrate observed that the charge sheet stated that the offence was committed on July 15, 2013 which could not have been true. It sounds incredible, but it’s true. Two mothers, Sarah Poppy, 29, and Nona Stanley, 36, who claim they were sacked while on maternity leave are suing their former employers for unlawful discrimination and sexual harassment. They have file a law suit in the Federal Court in Adelaide alleging their employer – South Service to Youth Council – discriminated against them on the basis of their “sex, pregnancy and family responsibilities”. In court documents, Poppy says she worked with the council from June 2006 and was promoted to marketing manager on $60,000 a year before she fell pregnant with son Hudson in 2009 and told work she would take maternity leave. In her claim, she alleges that after this request she was moved from her office to a “common work area” and was told to no longer attend management meetings. She claims she was informed her position was redundant in June 2010 while on maternity leave. She also alleges that her work duties were undertaken by another employee during her maternity leave and after Ms Poppy was made redundant. Stanley, on her part, says she was employed from November 2009 in the council’s property department and took maternity leave on September 19, 2011, after the birth of her daughter Olivia. Five months later, while still on maternity leave, she was told “her position was redundant” and there were no other positions available in her department, she alleges. The pair, whose case is being funded by the Federal Attorney-General’s Department, also claim they were subjected to comments of a sexual nature which “offended, humiliated and intimidated” them. The women are seeking an apology and compensation for loss of income, leave, chance of promotion, “hurt and humiliation” and legal costs. In a statement, the SYC said it “strongly refutes the allegations” brought against it “relating to alleged breaches of the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 and the Fair Work Act 2009″ and will fight the claims in court. On its website the council describes itself as a “community organisation centred on employment, training and youth services”. Latest figures show the state Equal Opportunities Commission has received more than 100 complaints this financial year from employees about sexual harassment, caring responsibilities and pregnancy. A mother and daughter duo who make porn films together are looking for a father-son team willing to join them on camera. Jessica Sexxxton, 56, and her daughter, Monica, 22, have been shooting sex scenes together for the last 18 months for their own self-titled website, sometimes sharing the same partner, but not at the same time and never with each other -- a technicality that keeps their films from being legally considered incest. Now the Tampa, Fla.-based twosome are hoping to take their unorthodox relationship to the next level, with a nationwide search for a real father and son willing to shoot a porn film scene with them. "It's something we've considered for a while," Jessica Sexxxton told The Huffington Post. "We once dated brothers in real life on and off for a couple of years. They were closer to [Monica's] age, but we haven't done a father and son in real life or on camera." Like the Sexxxtons, the father and son won't have sex with each other, but Monica already has the scenario for this sordid family affair in mind. "Something like, 'Hey Dad, my girlfriend's got a hot mom,'" Monica hypothesized to HuffPost. "But we'd probably cater to the fantasy by having the father have sex with me." The Sexxxtons tried casting a scene before using non-related actors as the father and son, but Monica said she didn't like the results, because the man cast as the "Dad" "looked too much like the "Cockroach" guy from that movie, 'Men In Black.'" A woman, Sakirat Attah, 25, has been arrested by the police at Elemoro Division, Lekki, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, for severely scalding her son’s face. The petty trader who resides at Abijo village in Ibeju Lekki, allegedly carried out the dastardly act while punishing little Daniel for licking their neighbour’s soup. P.M.NEWS gathered that Sakirat also used a broken bottle to stab Daniel in the head during her fit of anger and he sustained a deep cut in the head A police source told P.M.NEWS that the victim’s neighbours rescued him from the mother and quickly rushed him to a nearby hospital due to excessive loss of blood. P.M.NEWS gathered that trouble started for the little boy when their co- tenant allegedly caught him licking their pot of soup and reported him to his mother. The mother of the child was said to have dragged her son inside her room and locked the door. She allegedly lit her stove and put an iron spoon on it to get hot and used it to burn her son’s face and hands as punishment. It was also gathered that when the little boy was not cooperating with her, she allegedly broke a bottle and stabbed him in the head before neighbours who allegedly heard the boy crying for help entered the woman’s room and rescued him. A lecturer at the University of Abuja, Agbo David Oklo, has advocated for the ban of use of mobile phones by students in all tertiary institutions in the country in view of its negative influence in the lives of the students. The lecturer, who stated this in an interview with our reporter at the language week of the Government Secondary School, Kubwa, described mobile phones as serious distraction to students in the course of their studies. Attributing the poor performance of students in examinations to the use of social media, Agbo maintained that the ban of cell phones would not only increase their academic performance, but will reduce the moral decadence among the students. The university don, who spoke on the topic "Language as a tool for national development", tasked the students to take the study of English language seriously, being a major prerequisite for entrance into tertiary institutions. He called for better remuneration for teachers at various levels in order to boost their moral to give their best to the students. The head of Languages department of the school, Mrs. Esther Kanu, said the essence of the programme was to improve the language skills of the students and to equip and prepare them for future examinations. She canvassed for increase in staff salaries and regular organisation of seminars and workshops for teachers to update their knowledge for subsequent transfer to the students. DO you think this argument is right? Comment below . |

In the entire Africa, Ghana and Nigeria especially, entertainment has grown wider than we envisaged. This growth is very fast , making it possible to almost compete side by side with Hollywood. So, there’ll be no need to doubt the same growth in proportion to its fashion sense, ranking our actresses and actors among best world dressers. But even as fashion conscious as we are, our ladies, although give as much attention to their hair but hardly flaunt the price. This isn’t so in the case of Ghanian actress, Salma Mumuni. She has suddenly gone gaga about her hair and wont give the social media a break, a week not passing by without robbing on our faces her hair price tags. Meanwhile, maybe to put herself on the list of most sought after Ghanian actresses, Salma decided to change her looks. She’s now gone from the long-haired Salma, into a short-haired one. Recently, she revealed the monthly sum she now spends to maintain her new hair cut. According to her, over $3,000 goes down into maintaining her new look so that she can stand out among her peers. “I maintain it every week too”, she added. If I’m not wrong, this will be the fourth time 2face will be escaping death. May God continue to protect him. Award winning singer and song writer Tuface Idibia, last Sunday narrowly escaped death while on board an airplane Lagos bound from South Africa. It was a night flight and sources say the singer was listening to music from his iPod when he perceived a foul burning odor. The situation became more serious when the lighting system in the aircraft suddenly went off; and panic set in with some passengers whispering ”This plane is going to crash!”. The captain then announced that the plane had developed an electrical fault and they were going to have an emergency landing. The plane had to turn around and head back to South Africa. 2face was spotted talking and calming his crew down, telling them not to panic. Miraculously, the tires came out and the plane successfully landed and the passengers were evacuated. Thankfully the pop star is doing okay. Former governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, has attributed his travails over allegations of corruption to the power tussle between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his vice, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar over the 2007 presidency. Speaking to newsmen in Lagos, Alamieyeseigha said he was persecuted by President Obasanjo because of the alleged plan by Atiku Abubakar to nominate him as his running mate during the 2007 presidential election. The former Bayelsa State governor said his arrest and travails in London and Nigeria over allegation of corruption was political, promising to expose those behind his travail in his memoirs, which he is presently writing. His words: “The summary of it is that Atiku Abubakar, according to Obasanjo, nominated me as his running mate. End of story. He (Obasanjo) said it was over his dead body and that he would fight me and Atiku to the end of the world. He said that unless he dies, Atiku could not be president of Nigeria. That was the beginning and the end of the story. “Maybe the only mistake I made was that I left this country to Germany for medical surgery. Again, I made the mistake of calling him (Obasanjo) when I recovered from the surgery. I told him that I just came out from the theatre. I started having funny calls and they started plotting (against) me.” “The whole thing was political and one day I will expose everybody. I have started writing; people are ignorant of what really happened, so they can talk. But if I open my mouth, some of them will keep quiet. I am going to tell my story.” All attempts by Saturday Mirror to reach out to Chief Obasanjo on the allegation against the former President by Alamieyeseigha proved abortive as Obasanjo and his aides refused to comment on the matter. Speaking on the alleged face-off between President Goodluck Jonathan and Rivers State governor and chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, Alamieyeseigha cautioned Amaechi, asking him to learn from his own experience. “I have told Amaechi himself that he should learn from my experience, that nobody tries government. He should learn that after God, it is government. Amaechi is in a regional government. There is Federal Government and there is a president and the Commander-in- Chief of the Armed Forces. “Let me say that most of these things, the president himself may not know. It is people around that are creating this entire problem. If you call the two of them and sit them down, I am sure they would not be able to tell you what has happened between them,” he said. He also had harsh words for those who criticised the state pardon granted him by the Federal Government, saying that the critics never knew what transpired behind closed doors leading to his pardon, but conceded that “people have the right to express their opinions.” His words: “They don’t know the contributions I have made towards the sustenance of of peace in this country. May be the impact of my contribution would have been felt if there had been no oil and no money to share at the federal level. “Because things are so rosy and at the end of the month they go to Abuja and share the money, they don’t feel the impact and don’t realise that people went into the creeks; slept in every camp to make sure that amnesty was achieved.” He added that even President Obasanjo wrote him many commendation letters, congratulating him and thanking him for what he did, adding: “I risked my life by going as far as the high seas several times to rescue expatriates.” Source: http://adevision..com/2013/05/25052013-share-exposed-i-was-persecuted.html

In its renewed effort to stamp out examination malpractices, the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, says it will henceforth cancel the entire results of any candidate who cheats in more than one subject. The examination body revealed this in a communique it issued at the end of the council’s 55th Nigeria Examinations Committee, NEC, meeting held in Lagos. In the communiqué, which was signed by the WAEC Deputy Director (Public Affairs), Mr Yusuf Ari, the council said it became necessary to review its rules on examination malpractice. The exam body said that it observed with concerns the indictment of some candidates for malpractice in more than one subject in the November/ December, 2012 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, WASSCE. According to the council “in order to check the ugly trend, the committee subsequently decided that the sanction in the council’s rules and regulations should be reviewed. “It is clear that there is an urgent need to review the rule on such cases from cancellation of subject result to cancellation of entire results”. It observed that collusion and irregular activities, inside and outside the examination hall, were the most prevalent forms of examination malpractice. It, however, stated that monitoring by members of staff of the council and other stakeholders as well as recent innovations were exposing examination cheats. “Members believed that if the principal of a school decides that examination malpractice should not be allowed in his or her school, cases of malpractice will be very minimal”, it said. WAEC said that the NEC endorsed posting of WASSCE irregularities, special and clemency cases on the council’s website. It equally raised the alarm over the existence of a rogue website where false questions and answers were posted daily to defraud candidates during examinations, adding that it had neutralised the activities of those operators. |
