Politics / Dangote Named Among 50 Most Influential People Globally by Aebisco1: 6:19am On Dec 06, 2017

The President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has been recognised as one of the people who defined global business in 2017.

The Bloomberg 50 is a new, annual, multi-platform initiative that honours 50 icons and innovators who have changed the global business landscape in measurable ways over the past year.

The first Bloomberg 50 honourees were selected by the Bloomberg Businessweek team after months of input from many of Bloomberg’s 2,700 journalists and analysts around the globe, leveraging the resources of the Bloomberg Terminal, and represent the most influential thought leaders in business, finance, technology and science, politics, and entertainment.

A statement on Tuesday quoted Dangote as saying, “I am very delighted with this selection and I see the recognition as a call to do more towards youth empowerment, job creation, better health for the people and economic emancipation of the African continent.”

As of February 2017, Dangote, according to Forbes Magazine, had an estimated net worth of $12.5bn, ranked as the 67th richest person in the world and the richest in Africa.

Bloomberg, in the preface written by Paul Wallace, said, “Dubbed ‘the quiet billionaire’ for his relatively frugal lifestyle, Dangote fast-tracked plans to help his country of 180 million people import less of what it eats. Dangote, who made his fortune in the cement industry, is turning his attention to dairy and sugar farming; he’s earmarked $800m to buy 50,000 cattle in the hope of producing 500 million litres of milk annually by 2019.

“He’s also racing to finish a 650,000-barrel-a-day oil refinery near Lagos, set to be one of the world’s biggest, and says he intends to spend as much as $50bn in the next decade on renewable energy and petrochemical refineries, including investments in the US and Europe. Which is all fine, but not quite his grand ambition: buying Arsenal, his favourite soccer team.”

Politics / N62,000 Rent: Tension Grips Ibadan Traders Over Revocation Notice by Aebisco1: 9:01am On Dec 05, 2017
Tension is currently gripping shop owners at the popular Scout Camp Market in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital as the expiration of ultimatum given to them by the state government expires tomorrow (Tuesday).

DAILY POST gathered Monday evening that most of the traders at the market are currently in a sober mood as they face revocation of ownership of their shops if the ultimatum given by the Oyo State government for the payment of a total sum of N62,000 as annual rent expires tomorrow (Tuesday).

The state government had asked each owner of about 380 lock up shops and 900 open stalls in the market to pay a total sum of N62,000 annually.

This according to investigations by our correspondent will cover N50,000 as rent and N12,000 as service charge.

It reads, “Kindly pay the Rent and Service Charge for your lock-up shop at Scout Camp Business Complex on or before 5th December, 2017 or face revocation of offer”.

It was learnt that the affected traders had on several occasions protested and requested the state government to reduce the sum to N36,000 covering N24,000 as rent and N12,000 as service charge.

The traders last week at a meeting with representatives of Governor Abiola Ajimobi of the state, led by his Executive Assistant on Political Matters, Dr. Morounkola Thomas and Special Adviser to Ajimobi on Community Relations, Mr Murisiku Siyanbade argued that low patronage at the market was the major reason they were calling for reduction of the rent.

Chairman and Secretary of the traders’ association, Mr Kehinde Tewogbade and Mr Olayiwola Shuaib respectively in their remarks argued that they were not in an advantaged location for sales as well as the fact that there were a lot of street trading from Molete to Orita restricting buyers from coming into the market.

They appealed to the state government to be allowed to remain in their stalls pending a downward review of the rent.

Morounkola Thomas while responding said the state government had considered appeals and several factors before it pegged the rent at N50,000.

But, close sources at the market said most shop owners in the market were currently battling with anxiety over revocation of their shops.

Politics / What We Will Do If Security Men Do Not Vacate Our Market – Protesting Abuja Trad by Aebisco1: 9:43pm On Dec 04, 2017
Aggrieved traders of Utako Ultra-Modern Market in Abuja on Monday threatened to occupy the Presidential villa should President Muhammadu Buhari fails to order police officers who have taken over the market to vacate the entrance.

Recall that the entrance of the market was shut by security operatives, over claims of remodelling and re-developing it.

Speaking with MC EBISCO, Chairman, Utako Market Association, Nelson Onwuemodo, said the security operatives who shut down the entrance to the market said they were working based on order from the Presidency.

According to Onwuemodo,”Why the tempo is high is because when they drafted these armed police people to the market to kill us before they steal our properties, they told us that the order came from the Presidency.

“We want to know if the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria gave the order. The leader of the police squad that came yesterday to arrest my people who were shooting, spraying teargas all over the place said the order came from the federal government and who is the leader of the federal government?

“So we want to confirm if the president gave the order for his citizens to be killed or run at gun point. The man who led the squad that brutalized us yesterday; I met him personally and he told me that they were here to do their job and that the order was from the Federal Government. I don’t know any other person that is the Federal Government than the president.

“We are going to lock our shops until the president listens to us or give a contrary order, even if it’s for one month.”

On the next step if the president refuses to react, he said, “Our president is a listening president. We don’t want to go and occupy his gate because we know he is a listening president. If it’s the last option, we will occupy his gate.”
