Foreign Affairs / Iran Vice President To Replace Raisi Ahead Of Election by Aflick: 9:00am On May 20 |
Iran’s first vice president, Mohammad Mokhber, is expected to assume the presidency after Ebrahim Raisi’s death in a helicopter crash as the country gears up for early elections. The Iranian constitution stipulates that the first vice president take over “in the event of the president’s death, dismissal, resignation, absence or illness for more than two months”. Raisi, who died on Sunday along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other officials, was nearing the end of his first four-year term as president. Mokhber’s interim appointment requires the approval of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final word in all state affairs. Presidential elections to pick a permanent successor are to be held within 50 days, according to the constitution. A council made up of the parliament speaker, head of the judiciary and the vice president are to be tasked with organising the national vote. Mokhber, 68, was appointed vice president as Raisi took office in August 2021. The vice president was born in Dezful city in the southwestern province of Khuzestan, where he held several official positions. For years since 2007, Mokhber chaired the Execution of Imam Khomeini’s Order, a governmental organisation tasked with managing properties confiscated following the 1979 Islamic revolution. The foundation, established in the 1980s, has over the years grown to become a major state economic conglomerate with shares in various sectors. Iranians head to the polls for presidential elections every four years since the Islamic Republic’s first vote in 1980. The constitution sets a two-term limit for Iranian presidents. The position of prime minister does not exist in Iran, and the president — assisted by several vice presidents — is responsible for appointing and directing the cabinet. https://punchng.com/iran-vice-president-to-replace-raisi-ahead-of-election/?amp

Foreign Affairs / New Taiwan President Sworn In, Vows To Defend Island’s Democracy by Aflick: 8:39am On May 20 |
New Taiwan President Lai Ching-te on Monday vowed to defend the island’s democracy, as he called on China to end its military intimidation of the self-ruled island. In an inauguration speech, Lai also directly addressed the threat of war following years of growing pressure from China to bring Taiwan under mainland rule. Lai said a “glorious era of Taiwan’s democracy has arrived” and thanked citizens for “refusing to be swayed by external forces, for resolutely defending democracy”. “In face of the many threats and attempts of infiltration from China, we must demonstrate our resolution to defend our nation and we must also raise our defence awareness and strengthen our legal framework for national security,” said Lai, 64. China has described Lai as a “dangerous separatist” for his past comments on Taiwan’s independence — rhetoric that he has moderated in recent years. On Monday, he said his government will “neither yield nor provoke, and (will) maintain the status quo” — a balance that preserves Taiwan’s sovereignty while not declaring formal independence. “I also want to call on China to cease their political and military intimidation against Taiwan,” Lai said. He urged Beijing to “share with Taiwan the global responsibility of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait… and ensure the world is free from the fear of war”. Lai has made repeated overtures to resume high-level communications with China, which Beijing severed in 2016 when his predecessor Tsai Ing-wen took power. On Monday Lai said he hoped China would “choose dialogue over confrontation”. Experts have said Lai’s overtures are likely to be rebuffed. – US support – Taiwan has been self-governed since 1949 when nationalists fled to the island following their defeat by communist forces in a civil war on mainland China. For more than 70 years, China has considered Taiwan as part of its territory and has long threatened to use force to bring the island under its control. The United States switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China in 1979 but remains the island’s most important partner and biggest arms supplier. Lai is expected to further boost defence ties with Washington during his four-year term. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday congratulated Lai, saying he was looking forward to Washington and Taipei deepening ties and maintaining “peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait”. As Lai took office, Chinese state media reported Beijing imposed sanctions on three US defence companies over their sales of weapons to Taipei. Chinese social media Weibo also blocked hashtags referencing the inauguration, preventing them from trending on the platform used by hundreds of millions in China. Ahead of the inauguration, Beijing’s Taiwan Affairs Office said that “Taiwan independence and peace in the strait is like water and fire”. Chinese warplanes and naval vessels maintain a near-daily presence around the island, but in the days leading up to the inauguration, there has not been a significant uptick in the numbers. Lai and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim — Taiwan’s former top envoy to Washington — are both part of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which has championed Taiwan’s sovereignty. China has dubbed them an “independence duo”. – ‘Expand investment’ – With only 12 formal allies, Taipei lacks diplomatic recognition on the world stage. Eight heads of state who recognise Taiwan attended Lai’s inauguration ceremony. More than 40 other countries, including the United States, Japan and Canada, also sent delegations. Taiwan has its own government, military and currency, and the majority of the 23 million population see themselves as having a distinct Taiwanese identity, separate from the Chinese. “I think it is better not to be too close to China or too far away from China — it is better to maintain a neutral feeling,” said Shen Yujen, 24, who is part way through his four-month military service. Domestically, Lai faces another challenge after his DPP lost its majority in the legislature in the January elections, meaning it will be hard for him to push through his policies. Many Taiwanese are less worried about the threat of conflict than they are about soaring housing prices, rising cost of living pressures, and stagnating wages. Lai on Monday vowed to “expand investment in society” and ensure the island becomes a “force for global prosperity” https://punchng.com/new-taiwan-president-sworn-in-vows-to-defend-islands-democracy/?amp

Crime / N200,000 Disappeared From Customer’s Account. Access Bank Returned It After FIJ’ by Aflick: 5:10pm On May 19 |
Access Bank has returned the sum of N200,000 to Save Otubu, a Delta-based man who lost the money to an unauthorised transaction on his bank account in April. Otubu told FIJ that the transaction was processed four days after FIJ reported it. FIJ had earlier reported how N200,000 left Otubu’s account with Access Bank on April 29, with the bank failed to trace the destination of his money. He had visited an Access Bank branch in Sapele on different occasions in search of answers and written to the bank’s anti-fraud unit. After going back and forth with the bank for a week, they sent him a message on May 3, empathising with him on the loss of his funds. When he returned to the bank for clarification on the message, some of the customer care representatives told him there was nothing they could do about the missing funds. Sad and dejected, he returned home. However, his mood lit up on Wednesday evening when he received a message notifying him that the bank had credited him with N200,052. Otubu wrote FIJ: “After publishing a report about the unauthorised transaction on my account, I was credited with my money. Thank you. I really appreciate your commitment towards it.” https://fij.ng/article/n200000-disappeared-from-customers-account-access-bank-returned-it-after-fijs-story/

Car Talk / Xiaomi Car Breaks Down Beyond Repair Minutes After Delivery, Owner Offered A Ref by Aflick: 4:49pm On May 19 |
The debut of the first Xiaomi car, officially referred to as the SU7, was a hit, and the Chinese tech behemoth bragged about the solid demand on multiple occasions. The company's CEO went as far as saying that Apple users love Xiaomi's car, as more than half of the people who ordered it own an iPhone. While these numbers, if accurate, highlight the need for an Apple Car, Xiaomi has other things to be busy with rather than bragging about sales. The SU7 seems to suffer from early reliability issues, with customers hitting all kinds of problems when taking delivery of their EVs. The latest happened only a few minutes after the buyer picked up the car from the dealership. A Xiaomi customer named Mr. Wen was one of the early Xiaomi SU7 customers, picking up the car in early May. He went to the Xiaomi Auto Xiamen Xing'an Delivery Center in Fujian Province approximately two weeks ago to get the vehicle. Minutes later, while he was driving on the highway, the car started throwing fault lights on the screen, advising the driver to pull over. When he stopped it, the car had only 39 kilometers (about 24 miles) on the clock, with a video showing the Xiaomi SU7 on the road shoulder with the hazard lights activated. The man recorded the blunder, filming the dashboard screen where the car told him that the drive system was faulty. As the local media reported, the driver was instructed to contact the online service center. That's what he did, so the Xiaomi SU7 he had just purchased was now getting towed back to the delivery center. Unfortunately, it didn't end well for the Xiaomi buyer. The car was sent back to the factory for further inspection, but Xiaomi's engineers couldn't find the cause of the problem. The parent company couldn't return the car as it was broken beyond repair, so the man was offered a refund. Considering he was one of the first Xiaomi SU7 customers, he didn't want the money but the car, albeit the Chinese tech firm couldn't offer a replacement vehicle because of the strong demand. Every car on the assembly line already has an assigned customer, so no units are available to be offered in exchange for the broken model. Eventually, Mr. Wen had no choice but to accept the refund, and the local media added that he might also receive compensation for the trouble he had to deal with. Unfortunately, it's still unclear why the SU7 broke down, but it's important to mention that this is only the first case of a Xiaomi car broken beyond repair. It's definitely not widespread, and despite other issues hitting the SU7, the demand for this model remains at record levels. https://www.autoevolution.com/news/xiaomi-car-breaks-down-beyond-repair-minutes-after-delivery-owner-offered-a-refund-233905.html
