Politics / Gov. Oshiomhole Reveals That They Uncovered Fraud In Pensions Payment In Edo by africwap01(m): 7:02am On Dec 10, 2015

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State stated that the state government has uncovered fraud in pension administration in the state and ordered the scrapping of the state’s Pensions Board, saying that a bureau would be created to look into the payment of pension funds to pensioners.

He promised that within two weeks, local government pensioners will get paid as steps have been taken to ensure that going forward, there will be provision made for payment of council pensioners.
Oshiomhole said:

“Government is aware that quite a number of our senior citizens, particularly the ones who were in the employment of the local governments, covered by the Local Government Pensions Board, for some reasons have not received their pension for a couple of months.
“I need to make the point clear, because when I see their comments, they seem to indicate that the state government is responsible for the payment of their pensions. It is true that the state government has some level of responsibility to supervise and watch over the conduct of local governments. However, the local governments remain the 3rd tier of government and their roles and responsibilities are fully spelt out in the Constitution.”

“Since I assumed office, Edo State Government under my stewardship has never and will never interfere with the funds of local governments. However, following the recent sharp drop in the revenue accruing to the local governments from the federation account, many of our councils found out that after providing for payment of teachers salary, which we consider first line charge, what they have left was hardly enough to meet their salary obligations.”

Crime / Police Arrest Security Guards For Impersonating Soldiers In Lagos by africwap01(m): 6:43am On Dec 10, 2015

Two security guards, Richard Adamu, 25; and Musa Mohammed 26, attached to an estate in Akowonjo, Egbeda, Lagos were arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad for allegedly impersonating men of the Nigerian Army. It was learnt that the guards were arrested in the community in military camouflage.
A handcuff, two jack knives and a Nigeria Police Force crest were said to have been recovered from the two bags found with the suspects, who hail from Adamawa State.
It was gathered that the police team had stormed the neighbourhood on November 24 around 6am for an operation and had detained the guards after they could not give satisfactory explanations to the items recovered from them.
The source said:
“A team of SARS operatives, led by one Sergeant Emmanuel, embarked on a patrol within Area M Command, as a proactive measure to stem bank robbery in the state. The team intercepted two young men in military camouflage with two bags.

“They claimed to be members of the Nigerian Legion. A handcuff, one Nigeria Police Force crest and two jack knives were found in their bags. They were brought to the command for interrogation, but they could not give satisfactory explanations.”

One of the guards, Adamu, told the police that he bought the army uniform in a market, adding that he had never used the uniform to rob or oppress anybody.
He said:
“I bought the uniform in the market. I was walking along the road one day when I found the police crest. I have never used it to rob or harass people. I am a security guard.”

Mohammed said it was Adamu who gave him the clothes. He also denied using same to perpetrate any unlawful act.
They were consequently arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on three counts of impersonation by a police prosecutor, Inspector Benson Emuerhi.
The charges read in part:
“That you, Richard Adamu and Musa Mohammed, on November 24, 2015, at about 9.30am, at Akowonjo area, Egbeda, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire to commit felony to wit: impersonating yourselves as members of the Nigerian Army by putting on camouflage vests and green combat trousers; thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 79 (1b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.”

“That you, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, did unlawfully have in your possession; one Nigeria Police crest, a handcuff and two jack knives ─ the items you could not give a satisfactory account of, and thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 327 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.”

The accused pleaded not guilty to the alleged crime before the presiding Chief Magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Olayinka.
They were granted bail in the sum of N200,000 each with two sureties each in like sum, while the case was adjourned till January 28, 2016.

Sports / Ighalo, Ideye, Ajayi Up For Complete Sports November Player Of The Month by africwap01(m): 11:14pm On Dec 04, 2015

Completesportsnigeria and Complete Sports have nominated the three players below for the Complete Sports Player of the Month award for November.
Please, to vote use the Leave A Reply field below the profiles and mention the player you would prefer to win. Voting closes 9n Tuesday, 8 December at 9pm.

Profiles written by JAMES AGBEREBI…

BROWN IDEYE (Olympiacos, England)

Since his move to Greek giants Olympiacos from West Bromwich Albion in the summer, Brown Ideye seems to have found a new lease of life.

The former Dynamo Kyiv striker has been contributing his own fair share of goals for the league leaders, scoring five goals in 10 league appearances so far.

After scoring the crucial goal against Dinamo Zagreb away from home in the UEFA Champions League in October, Ideye continued his good form when Olympiacos entertained Dinamo in the reverse fixture on November 4. Olympiakos went on to win the game 2-1, with Ideye providing the assist for his side's equalizer.

Four days later, Ideye was on target in Olympiacos' 2-0 win against Iraklis in a league clash. He scored the second goal which secured the win for Olympiacos before being substituted with 20 minutes remaining.

In a heavyweight league clash away to rivals Panathinaikos on November 21, Ideye was in the starting line-up but didn't get to kick a ball. The game was abandoned due to crowd trouble with the Greek football authorities awarding three goals and three points to Olympiacos.

Against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena on November 24, Ideye suffered a heavy loss with Olympiacos as they were thumped 4-0. Ideye however played throughout the 90 minutes.

Ideye was back among the goals following Olympicos' 3-1 home win against Asteras Tripolis on November 29, he scored his side's third goal with four minutes left.

ODION IGHALO (Watford, England)

Three times winner of the Complete Sports Player of the month award in 2015, and recent nominee for the English Premier League African Player of the month for November, Ighalo has continued to impress with his goals and overall performances for both club and country.

Ighalo, who has netted 24 goals for Watford in this calendar year, has shown no sign of easing off, something which has made him one of the top marksmen in the English top flight.

On November 7, Ighalo and his team-mates travelled to the King Power Stadium to take on high-flying Leicester City.

Unfortunately, they lost 2-1 to a Jamie Vardy inspired side. Despite the defeat, Ighalo saw action for 90 minutes.

Ighalo was invited for the Super Eagles first leg World Cup qualifier against Swaziland which took place on November 13. The game ended 0-0 with Ighalo featuring for 90 minutes.

In the return leg which took place on November 17 in Port Harcourt, Ighalo was also in action and helped the Eagles win 2-0.

Ighalo returned to club assignment on November 21 when Watford welcomed Manchester United at Vicarage Road. After several attempts to restore parity after going a goal down, Ighalo finally won the penalty which led to Watford's equalizer. Unfortunately United went on to win the game 2-1 following a late Troy Deeney's own goal.

Then on November 28, Watford were guests to struggling Aston Villa and at the end of 90 minutes, Watford won 3-2. Ighalo, who was a menace to Villa's defence throughout the encounter, put Watford 1-0 up in the match.

JUNIOR AJAYI (CS Sfaxien, Tunisia)

Currently with the U-23 Eagles in Senegal who are vying to qualify for next year's Olympic Games in Rio, Junior Ajayi seems to have already hit the ground running for CS Sfaxien in Tunisia.

Ajayi rounded off November with a key brace in the U-23 Eagles' 3-2 win against Mali in their opening game, showing that his feat during the team's qualifiers for the All Africa Games and CAF U-23 Cup of Nations was no fluke.

He has managed to find the back of the net four times in six appearances for Sfaxien. And it is believed there is more to come from the former Shooting Stars hit man.

Ajayi scored the only goal in CS Sfaxien 1-0 win away to EO Sidi Bouzid on November 1 in the Tunisian league. He later made way for Houssem Habbassi with six minutes left in the game.

On November 7, Ajayi scored in CS sfaxien's 3-1 home win against Metlaoui. He scored Sfaxien's second goal of the match.

He was in action again on November 20 against Kaironan which ended 2-2. He featured for 90 minutes in the encounter.

Four goals in November for club and country is an impressive return for the youngster, who is making his first appearance as a Complete Sports Player of the Month nominee.

Crime / Photos: Former Nimasa Boss Akpobolokemi, 3 Others Arraigned Over N2.3bn Fraud by africwap01(m): 10:55pm On Dec 04, 2015

Press statement from EFCC
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission today December 4, 2015 arraigned a former Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency Patrick Ziadeke Akpobolokemi, Executive Director Captain Eziekiel Bala Agaba, Ekene Nwakuche, Governor Amechee Juan, Blockz and Stonz Limited and Al-Kenzo Logistics Limited before Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court Lagos on twenty-two count charge of conspiracy fraudulent conversion and Money Laundering.

The accused persons are alleged to have fraudulently converted the sum of N2, 365,600,000 meant for the implementing of the International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Code which NIMASA was the designated implementation agency. The former DG was said to have gotten presidential approval for the release of the said monies through the office of the then National Security Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, Colonel Sambo Dasuki. For the purpose of executing the ISPS, a committee chaired by Captain Bala was set up by Akpobolokemi. Other members of the committee are Captain Warredi Enisuoh Mr Vincent Udoye, Governor Amechee Juan, Captain OBF Ola dipole and two NPA staff. The committee was mandated to coordinate the activities relating to the ISPS in line with international regulations and the scope in Nigeria.

Investigation, however, revealed that, upon receiving the money, the committee instead of executing the project diverted the entire sum to their personal use, using companies owned by them and their associates to lauder the illegal proceeds. One of the counts read that, “you Patrick Ziadeke Akpobolokemi, Captain Eziekiel Agaba, Ekene Nwakuche, Governor Amechee Juan between 23rd of December 2013 and 13th March 2014 in Lagos within the jurisdiction of this court did commit an offence to wit; conversion of the sum N437,726,666,66 (Four Hundred and Thirty Seven Million, Seven Hundred and Twenty Six Thousand , Sixty and Six Kobo) property of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 15 (1) of the Money Laundering ( Prohibition ) ( Amendment ) Act 2012 and punishable under section 15 ( 3 ) of the same Act”. The accused persons pleaded not guilty to all the charges read to them. In view of the plea of the accused persons, prosecuting Counsel Rotimi Oyedepo requested for trial date and also prayed the court to remand the accused persons in prison custody.

Counsel representing the accused persons: Joseph Nwobike, SAN for the first accused person, Pascal Madu for the second accused person, Lanre Olayinka for the third, fifth and sixth accused persons, A. I Asemundara for the fourth accused person, filed bail applications praying the court to admit their clients to bail. Justice Buba granted the accused persons bail in the sum of N50, 000,000 each with one surety in like sum. The surety must be a resident of Lagos with a landed property to be verified by the court registrar. Each accused and the surety must deposit their international passport and a passport photograph with the court registry.

He further added that each accused must sign an undertaking that he will not delay the trial. Justice Buba also ordered that the accused persons be remanded in prison pending perfection of their bail terms. The case was subsequently adjourned to December 7, 2015 for the commencement of trial.

Politics / Oshiomhole To Okonjo-iweala: I Await Your Lawyer’s Letter by africwap01(m): 1:03pm On Dec 04, 2015

Edo state governor, Adams Oshiomole has replied former Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala who threatened to sue him for linking her to the $2.1 billion arms deal scandal. Oshiomole had in an interview with Leadership, called for the prosecution of the former Minister for allowing such huge amounts of money to be looted under her watch. Oshiomole’s reaction to Okonjo-Iweala’s threat to sue is contained in a statement released by his spokesperson Kassim Afegbua yesterday Dec. 3rd..

“She should be ashamed to even state that she denied Edo people infrastructure loan, when she could not redeem what was due to the state. Would there have been need for loan request if she was truly in firm control of the economy under her watch? Is it not ridiculous that the former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy pretends to be ignorant of the sleaze and primitive looting of the nation’s treasury under her watch? Does it not prick the conscience of Okonjo-Iweala that so much financial improprieties were perpetrated right before her nose and yet wants to be celebrated as a super Minister? Does she want to absolve herself of the abysmal performance of the economy under her watch during the Jonathan years? From the revelations so far and the manner in which our resources were plundered in the last administration, it is crystal clear that Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was grossly incompetent to manage the nation’s economy especially on account of the huge sums of money running into billions of dollars that were stolen under her watch. Such incompetence will be further complicated if it is assumed that she looked away while some people helped themselves to the nation’s treasury. Either way, she is complicit. We have no doubt in our mind that, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, from all indications, has shown a remarkable attribute of a voodoo economist and one who rather than answer very simple questions by way of clarifications, easily condescend to base sentiments to divert attention. She has numerous questions to answer with respect to the management of our collective patrimony. What manner of a Finance Minister will allow huge sums of money to be withdrawn from the Central Bank of Nigeria with whimsical stroke, dealing with individuals in a way that eliminate the usual control that should be the hallmark of such body? How can a World Bank former Managing Director allow such conduct right under her watch without raising concerns? Those organizations which have been trying to dash her awards must as a matter procedure carry out due diligence to properly score her, else, one would have cause to suspect that such awards may have been procured. Anyone giving her award will be doing Nigeria and Nigerians a great disservice in the face of on-going investigations and revelations that have exposed the rotten underbelly of the Okonjo-Iweala years. In the meantime, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole awaits the letter from Okonjo-Iweala’s lawyers, but she should be reminded that public officers are accountable to the people and should be ready to answer questions on their role while in office or out of it.”

Religion / Chris Oyakhilome Facing Trouble In South Africa Over Money He Makes There by africwap01(m): 8:49am On Nov 26, 2015

Chris Oyakhilome is facing trouble in South Africa after refusing to comply with government orders to release his financial records. According to a report in News 24, several prominent church leaders have not adhered to the demands of the South African Commission for the Promotion and Protection of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities.

The Commission, led by Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva is investigating the commercialisation of religion and the abuse of people’s beliefs within South Africa, where Christ Embassy has several branches.

“These people take money from people. What are they doing with that money? We want to know. We will not back down,” she said.

All those summoned to the hearings are required to produce their ordination certificate, the church registration certificate, bank statements and the annual financial statements dating from 2012.

“Some of these religious leaders will face prison if they do not comply and we have been clear about our course of action,” she insisted.

Mkhwanazi-Xaluva singled out Oyakhilome, stating that he insisted he would fight the commission in court before releasing his records.

“If he intends on that route, we are ready. He will have to face the same fate as the others who refuse to hand over their financial records,” she said.

In contrast, a source who attended the hearing of South African Bishop Stephen Zondo, stated that Mkhwanazi-Xaluva cited an equally controversial Nigerian megachurch leader, T.B. Joshua, as an example of one who openly used his finances to assist the less-privileged, something she expected of all clergy.

Politics / Pdp Expresses Shock Over Prince Abubakar Audu’s Death by africwap01(m): 9:48am On Nov 23, 2015

Read the press statement from the PDP below…
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is shocked by the news of the sudden death of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in last Saturday’s Kogi state governorship election, Prince Abubakar Audu. At this critical moment, the PDP refrains from comments on the conduct of the election. That is not important now. What is important at this point is the sanctity of human life.
Our deepest thoughts and prayers go to the family of Prince Abubakar Audu and indeed, the APC fold. On this note, the Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, charges all PDP members in Kogi and across the nation to keep Prince Audu, his family and loved ones in their prayers, as we mourn with them and the people of Kogi state over this monumental loss. Politics / Lasg Warns Lagosians Against Consuming Imported Chickens by africwap01(m): 5:50am On Nov 23, 2015

The Lagos State Government has warned Lagosians against eating exhumed and contaminated chicken that are in circulation within the state as they pose a serious health risk to everyone.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Toyin Suarau, said some imported poultry products that are contaminated were seized by the Nigeria Customs Service in Badagry and buried but were later exhumed by some people who planned to sell them to unsuspecting members of the public.
Suarau disclosed this on Saturday while receiving officials of the National Orientation Agency who came to inform Lagosians about the dangers of consuming the contaminated food.
The commissioner said the imported poultry produce was preserved with chemicals like formalin which was poisonous, adding that it could lead to slow death.
Suarau said the poisonous products were not as nutritious as freshly processed poultry meat because imported poultry meat had been preserved for months and years with dangerous chemicals.

Sports / Siasia Begs Kidnappers: Please Release My Abducted Mother! by africwap01(m): 2:31pm On Nov 17, 2015

U-23 Eagles coach Samson has pleaded to his mother's abductors to please release her.

It was reported that Siasia's 72-year old mother Mrs Ogere Siasia was abducted on Tuesday morning in Odoni village by three men on a motorbike.

According to thenff.com, Siasia begged for his mother's release in order for him to focus on his assignment with the U-23 Eagles.

He said his mother happened to be the only one at home in his village taking care of his father who is visually impaired.

"Right now I am confused, from the story I got, three men on a motorbike stormed my parents' house in my village Odoni in Bayelsa State, shot sporadically into the air before taking my old mother away on a bike," Siasia said.

"What do they expect from me? I don't have money, I am right now on national duty, and need all the time to concentrate on this very important national task, so I beg them to please release my mother so that I can concentrate on this task of qualifying the U-23 National team for the men's football event of the Rio Olympics."

Joining Siasia to plead for the release of his mother is the Nigeria Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick.
"This is quite disturbing. We are just preparing for a crucial 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying match, and the U-23 boys are already in the Gambia for a pre-Cup of Nations training camp. Why this?," Pinnick said.
"All we can do is to appeal to the kidnappers to free Samson Siasia's aged mother. Samson is on a critical national assignment presently and the last he needs is this kind of distraction."
Meanwhile, Siasia confirmed that the incident has been reported to the police in Bayelsa State.
