Crime / In Solidarity Against Rape & Sexual Assault By Liado by ajaxtea(m): 10:45am On Jun 04, 2020
Caveat: RAPE is no sexist and not limited to any strata, but recent statistics shows that the female gender especially those in the lower class has the worst hit from this rising scourge. This dastard inhumanity against women and girl child has to end NOW!

During the ancient times, especially before the middle age, Emperor Caesar Constantine, a major but controversial ruler of importance, redefined rape as a public offense rather than as a private wrong. Interestingly, the punishment for people found guilty of rape was death, which was the same as for treason and murder. Unfortunately, in the 12th century, wide range of capital punishment was adopted in order to give room for less brutal and bloody punishments - a victim of rape might be expected to gouge out the eyes and/or sever the offender's testicles herself. Despite the harshness of these laws, actual punishments were usually far less severe than the damage rape does to the victims.

As civilization continues to envelop human existence, rape has become a societal wrong with drastic increase in rape cases involving toddlers and widows. Unfortunately, rape cases involving members of the lower class were rarely brought forward, and usually ended with only a small monetary fine or a marriage between the victim and the rapist. This discrimination and abuse of privileges by some members of the upper class welcomed a skyrocket in number of rape victims – they perpetrate this evil and get away with it. Today, nine centuries later, humanity is threatened by an unprecedented rise in rape cases across the globe.

As an advocacy group, we wish to focus our binoculars on our home country, Nigeria, by sharing our stance on the subject matter – advocate more brutal punishment for people prosecuted and found guilty of rape by a competent court of law. It has become imperative for us as a country to review the ambiguities in our Child Rights Act, Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, Criminal Law of Lagos, Penal code and Criminal Code. In addition, the need to improve on investigation by security agencies and to strengthen our judiciary in the fight against rape among other inhumanities against women has become evident. No doubt, critical times like this requires critical measures and approach, else we would have a case that further endangers women and the girl child in our country. Today, we wish to advocate for the inclusion of rape among the worst capital crimes that could be committed by man and that rapists should be subjected to execution. This extremely harsh punishment may not end rape but we are confident it will bring rape to its knees.

Inarguably, today, the abduction, rape and murder of women or youths is a common theme in modern Nigeria. Before we express our disappointment in the most recent rape cases and eventual murder of the victims (Uwa, Tina and other victims), we must remind ourselves of the over 300 girls abducted from two different communities in Maiduguri – Nigeria, and most probably raped by members of the Boko Haram Terrorist group, high number of unreported girl child marriages and slavery. These are of great concerns to all of us on this side of the divides. Today, Nigeria is one of extremely dangerous countries for women to live, in the world. This is as a result of how vulnerable the Nigerian society has left the female gender and the corresponding suppression they also suffer in every facets of life. It is time for us as a people to make laws that will protect women against all forms of oppression and inhumanity, in our society – punishments may include death and forfeiture of all assets belonging to the perpetrator.

Historically, there was a dark era in human existence – a period when rape of a slave could be prosecuted only as damage to the owner's property. People who worked as prostitutes or entertainers, even if they were technically free, suffered loss of legal and social standing. A person who made his or her body available for public use or pleasure had in effect surrendered the right to be protected from sexual abuse or physical violence. Then, the criminal justice system of many countries was widely regarded as unfair to sexual assault victims. Both sexist stereotypes and common law combined to make rape a criminal proceeding on which the victim and her behavior were tried rather than the defendant. Today, the rhetoric has changed, and the world has become a saner clime in regards to our interpretation of rape and sexual assaults against women – we no longer submit the discourse to the chastity of rape victims but to the moralities of the perpetrators.

Prior to the social media era, when victims were unable to bring this scourge to the front burners, adult women were often extremely reluctant to bring up charges of rape - public admission of having been raped was severely damaging to their social standing, as courts tended to be skeptical of the charges, conviction rates were low, and, in the event that the accusation could not be proved, the victim could then be accused of committing adultery with the rapist. Today, women have themselves become a voice against all forms of sexual assaults against them, creating women liberation organizations, rape crisis centers and other community-based service providers continue to grow and serve their communities by providing direct services and prevention programs – they no longer bury their harrowing ordeals, but share their stories in order to bring perpetrators to book and to also teach mothers and younger women lessons.

Health / Libra Advocacy For Development Organization Advocates For Improved Medical Care by ajaxtea(m): 11:27am On Apr 10, 2020
As the nation continues to grapple with the effects of the Corona virus on individuals and businesses, Nigerians have expressed concerns with the level of preparedness by the federal government towards combating the deadly virus.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the most common symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, tiredness, dry cough among others. And while no cure has been established yet for the disease; social distancing, use of face masks and sanitizers, among others, have been suggested as ways by which its spread could be curtailed.

Ever since the first outbreak was discovered in Nigeria on 27 February 2020, NCDC, the government agency headed by Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu has swiftly responded by setting up multiple testing and isolation centers across the country while also developing regimen for the treatment of infected persons.

While the swift responses provided by NCDC and state governments have been commendable, the nation still has a large coast to cover in keeping up with the lethal virus. The bad state of our health infrastructure has exposed a massive government neglect of the sector and now makes the entire populace vulnerable to the infectious disease.

With less than ten testing centers in 36 states of the federation, more than 150 million Nigerians are oblivious of their status as only the elites, politicians and their associates have access to diagnostics centers setup by the government. Compared to South Africa which currently conducts 5000 tests each day, our present capacity means that Nigeria could only conduct a few dozens COVID-19 tests per day leaving a large proportion of the lower and middle classes to self diagnosis and over-the-counter medications, contrary to WHO's strategy of maximum testing to effectively identify and isolate infected individuals.

Apart from the problems posed by inadequate testing centers, the nation also has a shortage of isolation centers where victims of the plague could be treated. Lagos with a population of about 20 million inhabitants has less than five isolation centers suggesting that the state may not be able to curtail an explosion of positive cases when such occur.

Essential items, including nose masks, hand gloves and sanitizers, which could be used to prevent a spread of the virus are also in short supply and a large number of people still go out without these mitigants. Failure of government to regulate prices has seen the costs of these essentials skyrocket and often becoming unaffordable for the average person.

Healthcare workers, whom are the only line of public defense against COVID-19, also share a part of our inefficiencies as they are periodically forced to down tools to demand improved remuneration and better work conditions. Apart from being available in very reduced numbers, health care workers in the country are poorly trained and lack personal protective equipment (PPE) to keep them safe from an infection which has killed more than 60 doctors in Italy alone.

A recent drive by federal government to engage the private sector as critical stakeholders in the fight against Corona virus is now starting to materialize. Currently, donations into the government-initiated COVID-19 relief funds is more than 10billion naira and looks likely to increase further.

These funds should be utilized for the purposes that they were collected. Multiple testing centers should be set up to increase our capacities for identifying people who have the virus even when they are asymptomatic.

Isolation centers should be established with state-of-the-art equipment to ensure that infected persons get the best treatments.
Sanitizers, nose masks, hand gloves and other items should be distributed freely to the entire populace. Personal protective equipment should be made available to our doctors, nurses and other health care professionals to keep them safe as they treat persons infected with the virus. In addition, remuneration for health care workers

Nairaland / General / Academic Activities Might Be Set To Return To LAUTECH by ajaxtea(m): 11:16pm On Dec 21, 2016
All might be set for academic activities to return to the campus of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho. If we recall the institution has been on lock and key as a result of industrial action embarked upon by the Unions of the institution over non- payment of Earned Academic Allowances from 2012/2013 session till date, poor funding of the school, lack of infrastructure, poor teaching environment and non payment of subventions from the two owner states of Oyo and Osun for over 20months.

The strike action has left the fate of student in the dark for over 6 months that the institution has been on strike. Speaking with some student on the subject, they lament on the situation which has left many of them hanging in the balance and speaking further some of the students have decried the nonchalant attitude of the two owner governments, while some have decried the actions of the striking union saying they acted too late in voicing out their concerns.

Since the inception of the strike action, efforts have been made by the student from consultation to confrontation all to no success, even raising speculation that the institution might hike its tuition fee.

But there seems to be light after the tunnel, as our sources informed us that the school management has paid 40% of the 2012/2013 session Earned Academic Allowance and he confirmed that they (staffs) received the alert, speaking further on the issue when asked the possibility of the industrial action being called off with this new development, he said in his words "hopefully the industrial action should be called off, but it all depends on the outcome of the ASUU congress that will be conveyed". Speaking on this new development some student also expressed optimism that the strike action would be called off so that academic activities can resume in the institution.

Until the congress of the ASUU is held, we are optimist of a positive outcome from the congress and hope that after the strike action might have been called off, the management and owner governments will not relent in making sure all other parts of the deal are fulfilled.

Wishing you all Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year ahead.

NYSC / Death Of Kano NYSC Female Member- An Act Of Ill Treatment by ajaxtea(m): 9:26pm On Dec 01, 2016
Please note:
1) what am about writing is nothing but the truth, an account given by the deceased sister who went to Kano state, when the deceased was complaining of ill treatment given to her by the NYSC camp clinic.

2) It has been re-written in a report format.

*** She came, She saw but they never allowed her to conquer- a tribute to Late #Oladepo_Ifedolapo_Amoke
#NYSC_Batch_B_2016 ***

The news media was filled with news of the death of the beauty plus brain batch B, 2016 youth corp member serving in Kano state, Ifedolapo a first class graduate from the department of Transport Mamagement, Faculty of Management Sciences, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomosho, Oyo state.

Here is the account of events that led to her death as narrated by her Sister. We are calling on NYSC to investigate and sanction the officials of the scheme in Kano state, who aided the death of this young woman.

"You called home 5hrs to your death and told you sister (a Nurse) to start coming as the NYSC doctors are not doing any thing for you, they thought you were pretending cos you did not want to go for parade so they did not attend to you, when you started calling people from home they eventually gave you an injection, immediately after the injection you called again that you notice a lot of rashes on your body that she should speak with the doctor who refuse to talk to her, you called five minutes later and told her your tongue is twisting they sent all your friends out after seeing all the reaction on your body.

After giving you an unknown injection, you requested for a flight home and a call was placed immediately, they told your sister Abuja flight is Mon.,Wed. & Fri. You were told to tell anybody in the clinic that your sister is a nurse they should allow her speak with them, a male nurse took the phone from you and told her you are having Anaphylaxis (reaction) and they will watch you for just one hour and transfer you to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital but alas they did not transfer you until 5hours later when they notice you were restless and calling people at home, your sisters boarded a bus going to Kano to come pick you from there, they were begged to take you to a teaching hospital around but they took you to General hospital, Gwazo where they have nothing or little care to render.

They took your phone from you claiming you were not resting, from that 5pm no one could talk to you, It took a 16 hours journey to make sure your sisters get to you, but they were called around 3am that you gave up, without any doctor in the hospital to assist you the only nurse on duty told your sisters she tried her best, her best of staying beside you when death was taking you away cos there was nothing to use, from that 3am till your sisters got to Kano they were hoping it will only be a mix up somewhere that it can't be you, they got to Kano and met you at Aminu Kano mortuary, alas it was you being put in that cold place".

Amoke you couldn't withstand the agony, NYSC caused your death due to negligence. Continue to rest till that glorious morning.

ADIEU #Oladepo_Ifedolapo_Amoke

The issue is Tori acted stupid, since you were the one that planned the day with Tobi while change it because of a guy who only lust for you.

Tobi also acted immature by throwing her out of the house, he could have ignored her, until she leaves the house (since she's planning to leave already).

Just wish Jo will not do anything she's gonna regret later on, when she gets to know Tori happens to be her twin sister!!!

Within the last 24 hours; broadcast messages has been sent to all groups and all sorts of social platform in our citadel of learning about a 200Level Agricultural Economics student called *Ajayi Adewale Muktar* also known as *Wale Bouncer*

Leukaemia is a sort of cancer of the blood cells that affects the bone marrow which symptoms are extreme pains in the bones and joints, night sweats, feeling weak, bleeding and bruising easily, weight loss, discomfort etc. I am not mentioning this symptoms to mock him or make jest of him, as I deeply bow my head in despair to pen down this dark moments but to make us know our friend, our brother, a son to some parents, a future leader any kind of relation he fits in our dear life would be feeling right now.

According to our sources as at 19:36HRS 24th August 2016, that is 7:36PM some tests were carried out on him today and to our utmost surprise (not happy to tell you this), the doctors said "he needs to be flown out of the country(INDIA)" to receive proper care and treatment as the medical equipment for the treatment is not available on our dear soil.

In lieu of this, we are urging Ladokites far and near, Nigerians, Parents from all nooks and cranny of Nigeria to kindly help our dear brother with whatever is within our reach - although the amount hasn't been disclosed yet for medical proceedings.

I must be emphatic, he needs our support *Financially*, *Spiritually*.

Don't be suprised if the road is completed within the time you mentioned coz the said road (Oyo - Ogbomosho) has attained some level of works. From Oyo - Odo-oba where the road is visible to the one used presently, the only work that is left is the asphalt layer to be added..

Besides sometimes when there hold-up on the old road being used presently due to trailer accidents, vehicles are diverted to take the express road... And the road is smooth, just the dust you will experience if you don't ave A.C in ur car...
