Crime / Governor Wike Offers N200 Million For Information On Rivers New Year Day Killers by Alao21(m): 7:06am On Jan 03, 2018
The Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, has announced N200 million reward for anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the gunmen who killed several residents of the state who were returning from church on New Year Day. The police in the state said it was difficult to ascertain how many people died so far from the incident which happened in Omoku, a community in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni (ONELGA) Local Government Area of the state.

But the Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Dakuku Peterside, who is an indigene of the state, said that 21 people were killed in the incident. Mr. Peterside, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, blamed the killing on a supremacy battle among rival cult groups and also accused Governor Wike of lacking the capacity to tackle the state’s security challenges.

“I have said it time and again that Governor Wike lacks the capacity and competence to guarantee the safety and security of Rivers people. It is unfortunate that over 1,000 persons have been killed in questionable circumstances in the last two years under his watch. He should stop playing politics with the lives of Rivers people and face governance,” Mr. Peterside said in a statement he sent to PREMIUM TIMES.

Liverpool and Egypt striker Mohamed Salah was named Arab Player of the Year for 2017 on Monday in a poll of around 100 sports journalists from several Arab countries. Salah, 25, has been an instant success at Liverpool since joining from AS Roma, scoring 17 goals in the Premier League already and 23 in all competitions.

He also helped Egypt to qualify for this year’s World Cup finals in Russia. Syrian winger Omar Khribin, who plays for Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, came second and another Syrian player, Omar Al-Soma, of Saudi side Al Ahli, was third. Crime / Nigerian Army Says 700 Boko Haram Captives Have Escaped by Alao21(m): 7:24am On Jan 02, 2018
The Nigerian army says more than 700 people held by Boko Haram militants in the north-east of the country have escaped captivity. An army spokesperson, Col Timothy Antigha, said they had fled several islands in Lake Chad and arrived in the town of Monguno, in Borno state.

There has been no independent verification of the army's claim. A BBC correspondent says the escapes are likely to have happened over a period of time, not in one go. The military says a recent armed forces operation, Deep Punch II, has weakened Boko Haram.

In a post on the HQ Nigerian Army Facebook page, Col Antigha said the 700 comprised "farmers, fishermen and members of their families who were hitherto held by Boko Haram terrorists as farm workers".He said the recent operation "was targeted at destroying Boko Haram infrastructure and logistics; such as communication centres, fabrication yards, bomb making equipment, vehicles and other means of sustenance".

Politics / No Other State Can Match Osun Public Schools’ Infrastructure — Aregbesola by Alao21(m): 6:19pm On Dec 29, 2017
Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State has said that no other state in the country can compete with Osun in terms of infrastructural development in primary and secondary schools. According to a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Wednesday by his media adviser, Mr. Sola Fasure, the governor said this while featuring on an NTA network programme, ‘Good Morning Nigeria.’

Aregbesola, the statement noted, described the provision of free meals to pupils in all government-owned primary schools in the state as exceptional. He said that Osun had received many awards, particularly from international organisations, based on its school-feeding programme which, he claimed, had drastically increased pupil enrolment in primary schools in the state.

The statement read, “Osun Elementary School Feeding and Health Programme is one of our programmes. Thousands of pupils are fed on every school day, while the state recruited thousands of young women as food vendors discharging the responsibility of cooking and serving the pupils in all the government-owned elementary schools delicious and salubrious meals.

Nairaland / General / Release Database Of Arrests By Security Agencies, Falana Tells AGF by Alao21(m): 9:02am On Dec 29, 2017
Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), has demanded that the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN), should release a certified true copy of the electronic database of records of arrests made by all law enforcement agencies. He also wrote to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, requesting the CJN to ensure proper monitoring of criminal cases in Nigeria under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

Last week, Falana wrote to the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Jutice Opeyemi Oke, asking her to designate Chief Magistrates to conduct a monthly inspection of all police stations and other detention centres in Lagos State as stipulated by the ACJA.

The senior advocate, in his letter, dated December 19, 2017, and addressed to the AGF, stated that his request was based on the provisions of Section 1 of the Freedom of Information Act. He also noted that the AGF was required to supply the requested information within seven days as stipulated by the FoI Act.
