Politics / 2023: Tinubu Attacks Afenifere Leader For Endorsing Peter Obi by alphonsojaybaz: 3:35pm On Sep 25, 2022
2023: Tinubu attacks Afenifere leader for endorsing Peter Obi

Presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has lambasted Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo for claiming the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation has endorsed the Labour Party Presidential flag bearer, Peter Obi as its candidate for the coming election.

Recall that the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Jare Ajayi, had in a statement on July 23, said Ahmed Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC “will only give continuity to Buhari’s incompetence. We know Peter Obi very well, that is why we endorse him”.

Also, Peter Obi had, in a tweet on August 23, said he visited the leadership of the group.

He said, “Presently visiting PA Ayo Adebanjo and members of the South and Middle Belt Leadership Forum. The National leaders of the Labour Party and other stakeholders are here too,”

However, in a statement issued on Saturday by Bayo Onanuga, director, Media and Publicity, APC Presidential Campaign Council, Tinubu alleged that Pa Adebanjo has turned Afenifere into his personal property.

The former Lagos Governor described Adebanjo as the leader of ‘Ohanifere Venture’, insisting that an individual, cannot equate himself with the socio-cultural and socio-political organisation.

The statement reads partly, “Papa Ayo Adebanjo does not speak for Afenifere. He is free as an individual to support anyone he likes, in furtherance of his democratic right.

“We know for a fact that Baba has turned Afenifere into his personal estate as acting leader. We are also certain that there was nowhere Afenifere, as we know it, met and took a decision to adopt Peter Obi as a candidate for the 2023 presidential election.

“We respect the age of Baba Adebanjo, but he cannot turn Afenifere into his personal franchise for any political alliance”.

Russian men rushing to wed women with children to avoid getting drafted in the war
https://makesensepromotions.com/russian-men-rushing-to-wed-women-with-children-to-avoid-getting-drafted-in-the-war/

Desperate Russian men are rushing to wed women with children as they frantically try to avoid getting conscripted for Putin’s war.

Deadbeat dads who abandoned their children are also attempting to reconnect with their ex-lovers in the hopes that they will be spared being drafted into the war in Ukraine.

Others are reportedly hurrying to sign themselves up as carers for elderly relatives they have previously neglected.

Russian men of fighting age are seeking to exploit loopholes that will stop them from getting sent to the frontline after Putin ordered the partial mobilisation of the country.

Up to 300,000 men may be signed up for the war, while figures of up to one million soldiers by next year have been floated.

Russian men rushing to wed women with children to avoid getting drafted in the war

Hundreds of thousands are trying to flee Russia, with queues of 24 to 30 hours reported at border crossings with Kazakhstan, Finland, and Georgia.

Thousands of protesters expressing outrage at the conscription order have been arrested in Russia.

But there have been reports that some of the detained activists have been handed their conscription papers at the police station and rushed to the frontline anyway.

SibReal media reported that marriage register offices were “packed” in the Buryatia republic in eastern Russia as men try to hurriedly marry single mothers to avoid being sent to the war front.

One woman said: “Me and my men went first to Ulan-Ude, but the queue was far too long.”

She added: “Everyone is getting married or applying to establish fatherhood, and children are getting registered to their fathers.”

A journalist based in Tomsk said: “So instead of running away or protesting [about the war mobilisation] they are registering marriages…

“Words fail me.”

Buryatia has seen the highest numbers of recruits to Putin’s war, and university students in Ulan-Ude were filmed being frogmarched by police from their lecture theatres to a conscription office.

Another woman from Moscow said her friend, a single mum of five, was proposed to by one desperate man to avoid being conscripted.

“She laughed so hard when she told me about it, and said looks like she will be super popular in the near future,” she said.

“It seems men with three or more children will not be mobilised.”

Some women may have selfish reasons for wanting to get married as well.

Wives qualify for compensation if their husbands are killed in the war, unmarried partners do not.

Olga, 22, said she had a shotgun wedding to her long-term boyfriend on Thursday.

“If something happens [to him], there would otherwise have been no way to prove I was his partner and the child was his,” she explained.

“Of course, I would have loved a big wedding, with our families celebrating, but I was so scared my husband would be taken [to the front] before we tied the knot that we decided to rush.

“They haven’t knocked at our door yet, only to our neighbours, but I fear it is only a matter of time.

Meanwhile, former Chief Press Secretary. at Asar-Toru Local Government Area of the state, Soye Granville, said the driver was his cousin and they had met hours before the incident.

“In our Buguma City, Saturday night was a very sad night because young men along the Emohua-Kalabari Road who are very lazy but have a desire for quick wealth and the illegal business of kidnapping killed a young man who was lawfully seeking out his daily bread and doing his legitimate job,” he wrote.
“Taylor Salvation Harry, a cousin in my paternal family in Ikpo Polo Buguma and Minama, all in Asalga, and I met Friday morning at the Buguma park where he was checking oil and others in his Toyota Picnic vehicle he manages to run the transport business and he reminded me of the discussions we had some months ago about support for him and I made a promise to him and left he was full of life and has faced so many challenges but somehow God has helped him out
“Only a few hours later, savage devils snuffed away his life. It is such a heinous and culpable act of wickedness and cowardice that has emboldened criminal elements as a result of the failure of the security apparatus across the country to act proactively or, in most cases, misplaced priority over the lives of law-abiding citizens for small stipends some of them receive from local artisanal refineries, which are contributing more to the problems the society faces today with funds to buy weapons by non-state actors, who in turn cause havoc with same against innocent citizens.
“I am pleading with the federal government to send their agency in charge of the Emohua-Kalabari Road to go and fix the road as soon as possible (FERMA)
“That there should be collaboration between the federal, state, and local governments to figure out how to fix the road while putting government bureaucracy aside and thinking about the lives lost and those kidnapped and maimed for ransom
“Furthermore, all-night travel should be avoided for the time being until normalcy is restored. Another important element adding to the threat of kidnappings and other forms of crime is that the majority of those involved are known; they are not spirits; they live among us and are generally applauded when they throw their blood money about,”

Pregnant lady approaches doctors at the National Hospital Abuja to seek a buyer for her unborn baby

A 23-year-old pregnant lady simply identified as Chinaza, has approached doctors at the National Hospital in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, to seek a buyer for her unborn baby.

Punch reports that Chinaza left her parent’s house in Imo state for Lagos state where she lived with her friend. Her friend’s house was later demolished and this caused her to be homeless. She decided to visit Abuja where she went to a hospital to seek a buyer for her unborn child.

“A pregnant lady came to the hospital over the weekend and said she wanted to sell her unborn baby. She said she mistakenly got pregnant and left her parents house in Imo State to stay with her friend in Lagos State.

While living with her friend, she said her residence was demolished and they travelled to Abuja to live with her friend’s uncle. She said her uncle’s landlady complained about the number of persons occupying the apartment, and they were later asked to leave.

While wandering around, she said she requested help from a woman she met in Utako, Abuja, and the woman gave her N500. She said the woman told her to come to the hospital to say whatever was on her mind. She has been handed over to the police in FCT. She is still there as I speak. “a source said

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the FCT police command, Josephine Adeh, said the lady is now in police custody and is being interrogated.

Education / Ekiti University Reopens Despite Ongoing ASUU Strike by alphonsojaybaz: 8:11am On Aug 30, 2022
Ekiti university reopens despite ongoing ASUU strike

https://makesensepromotions.com/ekiti-university-reopens-despite-ongoing-ASUU-strike/

The management of the Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado Ekiti, has reopened the institution for academic activities, in defiance of the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Union of Universities (ASUU) nationwide.

The management directed the students to resume academic activities on Monday, 29 August.

However, the ASUU chapter in EKSU says the management is on its own.

The EKSU chapter of ASUU had joined the six month-old strike following the demand by the union for the adequate funding of the universities and implementation of other reforms contained in an earlier agreement with the federal government.

Edward Olanipekun, Vice Chancellor of EKSU, had, last week, hinted that the institution would defy ASUU and reopen the university for academic work.

The President of ASUU, Emmanuel Osodeke, had also derided state-owned universities which are not on strike, and described them as “quacks.”

The universities are Kwara State University, Lagos State University (LASU), Osun State University, and lately, the Ekiti State University.

“When you are providing data, look at the background. Kwara State University is not a member of ASUU; Osun State University was suspended for its behavior, you can check, LASU you mentioned, we are in court with LASU because they sacked all our executives five years ago so they are not part of this struggle,” Osodeke had said in a television interview last week.

The EKSU Vice Chancellor, told journalists in Ado- Ekiti on Saturday that the decision to reopen for classes was taken by key members of the institution.

“It was a decision taken by the stakeholders about the effect of this prolonged strike on the institution and our position have been made public about our intention to begin work and restore normalcy,” Olanipekun said.

However, a circular by the institution’s Registrar, Ife Oluwole, noted that the resumption is with respect to old students and the newly admitted ones for the 2021/22 academic session.

“Stakeholders in Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, which included the Vice Chancellor and other Principal Officers, Provosts, Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, Professors and Officers on grade level 14 and above met on Sunday, 21st August, 2022 to review the situation in the University,” the statement read.

“Stakeholders noted the socio-economic effects of the current strike action embarked upon by the staff unions in the University on other stakeholders (parents, students, alumni and staff) and the plea by the parents.

“It further noted that the industrial action is having negative effects not only on the students but also on the University. These include: a) undue prolongation of the academic calendar and the stay of the students on campus; low patronage by candidates seeking admission to the University and inability of Staff to meet up with their financial obligations.

“The negative effects also include inability to pay Staff salaries, among others.

“Participants at the meeting deliberated extensively on the matter and resolved that, in the interest of the teeming population of our students, their parents and the survival of the University, it has become imperative for all members of staff currently on strike in the University to resume normal official activities.

“Consequently, the stakeholders unanimously decided that the University Management should reopen the university without further delay for continuation of academic activities.

“Accordingly, all newly-admitted students for 2021/2022 academic session should also resume on Monday, August 29, 2022 for screening, registration and orientation programme.”

But the EKSU branch Chairman of ASUU, Kayode Arogundade, denied that its members were part of the decision to reopen the institution for academic activities.

He told newsmen on Sunday through a message on Whatsapp that ASUU was not in agreement with the decision and so its members would not be resuming for work.

“No, we are not in agreement with the decision,” said Arogundade.

Several talks with the federal government to end the six-month-old strike had ended in a deadlock with ASUU extending the strike.

There are indications that the ongoing strike would be also be extended for another month or two if a deal was not reached between the union and the federal government.

Sexual satisfaction is important for a happy, healthy relationship. A man once heard that eating the scrotum or buttocks of an animal will help increase his sex drive.

Two weeks before his wife’s return from a trip abroad, he ate nothing other than the scrotum of a goat. The day she finally arrived, he couldn’t go beyond the first round when she was just getting started. Poor guy!

You don’t have to be that guy. There are actually natural foods to help you last longer in bed.
Why people don’t last long in bed?
1. Physical and emotional stress/ ill-health

People don’t last long in bed due to reasons like stress, depression, weakness, ill-health, hormonal imbalance, and so many other reasons. If you have premature ejaculation and don’t take the time to eat natural foods to help you last longer in bed, your condition may not improve at all.
2. Alcohol

Firstly, because they are drunk and tired, the possibility of lasting at all becomes rather slim. Also, in the long run, their sex drive and longevity in bed are reduced.
How to last longer in bed?

• Are you in the mood?

You must get yourself in the mood for sex, otherwise, no matter what your partner does to turn you on, you will not last long in bed.
• pre-intimacy

Lovemaking starts from the desire and the teases before the main act. pre-intimacy can prolong sex and help you last longer in bed. The important thing is to find out what your partner likes and administer it excellently. Once you have helped your partner achieve orgasm, no one will be watching the clock to see how long you last!
• Medication

This is not really the aim in this article, as we want to tell you about natural foods to help you last longer in bed. Medications should be taken as a last resort when other options have failed.
• Slow and steady wins the race

let’s be frank, sex requires intense amounts of energy. Enjoy it, don’t rush to finish. Put a lot into every touch and every kiss.
• Masturbation

Unpopular opinion: masturbation can buy you time. To get in the mood for sex, you can masturbate first before she arrives. It will get you started and also take the urgency out of the way.
• Eat natural foods to help you last longer in bed

How to use food to last longer in bed?

Natural foods to help you last longer in bed are mostly fruits and vegetables. You have to make sure you pack your diet full of these whole foods. It all starts and ends with nutrition!

Be prepared. An alternative is drinking red wine (preferably non-alcoholic), red grape juice or any wine that is majorly made of red grape.
Banana

Banana is a great longevity booster for men. If you want super-firm erections, bananas are the way to go. Eating lots of bananas will ensure that when you need an erection, you’ll have a strong one.
Yoghurt

This is a great one for the ladies. Yoghurt helps to balance the PH level of the vagina, so include it in your diet if you want to improve your sex life.
Spicy foods

Spicy foods can improve the sex drive of both men and women because they dilate blood vessels and increase blood flow. You can also increase the production of testosterone and improve sex drive with spicy food. Also, spicy foods are vasodilators. They can relax your body, reduce blood pressure, etc. These two alone are enough to get you started.
Avocados

Avocados give you energy for anything including sex. This wonder fruit is rich in folic acid.

Spinach: Spinach is rich in magnesium, which helps to dilate blood vessels to allow easy flow of blood all over the body (and to the penis when you need it).
Watermelon

Just like spinach, watermelon also relaxes the blood vessels, which, in turn, increases sexual arousal.

Meat: healthy meat helps to improve your blood flow especially beef, chicken, and pork. Increase in blood flow means an increase in sex drive.
Nuts

Walnuts, hazelnuts, peanuts, tiger-nuts, coconut, dates, are natural foods to help you last longer in bed. Walnut gives double the result.
Kunu drink aya AKA tiger nut milk

What these foods do, basically, is to relax your mind, open up your veins, and get your body working properly. These foods will relax your body and improve blood flow, which is essential for arousal. Most importantly, these natural foods to help you last longer in bed will improve your overall health.

A team of policemen from Elemoro Division of the Lagos State Police Command, weekend, stormed the Peculiar Generation Assembly at Eputu London in Awoyaya, Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos, arresting the General Overseer, Bishop Chris Omosekpa.

His arrest was sequel to a bench warrant issued against him by Justice R. A. Oshodi of the Lagos State Sexual and Domestic Special Offences Court, GRA Ikeja.

Makesense Promotions learned that Omosekpa allegedly molested some of his church members, among whom were minors. He was alleged to have manipulated them through false prophecy and intimidation.

Omosekpa was initially arrested by policemen at Makinde Police Station, Mafoluku, Oshodi and charged to the Ogba Magistrate’s Court where he was granted bail under special circumstances after his lawyer claimed he had COVID-19 and tuberculosis.

Immediately after his bail, Omosekpa was said to have embarked on a public campaign misinforming members of the public that he had been discharged and acquitted.

Chief Operating Officer and Advocate of Children and Vulnerable Persons, ACVPN, Ebenezer Omejalile, told newsmen that the latest arrest became almost impossible, as the suspect ran to Zone 2, with the intention to get special protection, but he was directed to go back to Makinde Police Station, Mafoluku, Oshodi.

Confirming the arrest, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said: “The arrest was sequel to a bench warrant issued against him by Justice R. A. Oshodi of the Lagos State of Sexual and Domestic Special Offences Court, GRA Ikeja.”

Properties / Remains Of Collapsed Ikoyi Building Crash On Neighbouring Homes by alphonsojaybaz: 8:29am On Apr 08, 2022
Remains of collapsed Ikoyi building crash on neighbouring homes

Some remains of the collapsed 21-storey building in Ikoyi have crashed on neighboring homes, causing destruction and inconveniences.

In February 2022, the Lagos State Government accepted 26 out of 28 recommendations of the Toyin Ayinde-led panel that investigated the collapse of a 21-storey building in the Ikoyi area of the state.

One of the recommendations the state government accepted was that the multiple storey buildings still standing at the site of the collapse on Gerrard Road in Ikoyi should be demolished and the land forfeited to the state government.

However, residents around the area confirmed that no action has been physically taken on the property since all corpses were recovered from the site last year.

Recall that on Monday, November 1, 2021, the building (one of three), which was under construction at 44B, C & D Gerald Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, collapsed at 2 pm.

The incident claimed the lives of over 40 people, including the developer of the said building, Olufemi Adegoke Osibona, the Managing Director of Fourscore Heights.

A neighbor, who wishes to remain unnamed, alerted this reporter on Friday, April 01, 2022, afternoon, saying one of the networks of metals used in the construction of the buildings fell, causing a familiar panic in the neighborhood, as of the day the building collapsed.

Describing the incident, the source said, “It felt just like the day the 21- storey building collapsed. On that fateful day, we heard the metals first fall before the building itself. So when we heard metals again, we ran out of our homes in fear. It feels like trauma.”

However, she confirmed that the effect was only seen within the premises of the construction as of the time this was brought to our notice.

Following a heavy storm later that night, other parts of the construction metal network crashed into three neighboring homes, causing serious damage to the affected buildings.

On Wednesday, April 6, 2022, this reporter reached out to Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) to seek information on the reason the remaining uncompleted buildings at the site of the collapse have not been demolished as recommended.

At the time of filing this report, Lagos State Building Control Agency, had not responded to our request for a statement via email, and contact numbers remain “disconnected.”

Background to the Ikoyi Building collapse

Before the incident, the developer, Osibona had disclosed that the project was to be a 7-star hotel of “15-storey”.

In the report submitted to the inquest, the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) said the developer hid some sensitive and important information about the project.

Also, a Structural Engineer, Mr. Muritala Olawale, revealed to the council investigating the building collapse how Fourscore Heights altered a four-storey building plan to 21.

Olawale, who rendered structural consultancy services to the contractor, noted that while working on the design, Osibona reversed the brief to three blocks of 14-floors (ground plus 13 suspended floors).

He added that Osibona kept changing the brief by adding more floors to the buildings and never presented the necessary government approvals for the high-rise structures.

In a letter, addressed to Osibona, Olawale withdrew his involvement in the project due to the deficiency of tools required to test the strength of the building. The letter is dated 20th February, 2020.

The Lagos State Government was reportedly miffed with the property developers and owners for embarking on such a project without subjecting it to procedural approvals from the state government and other authorities vested with the mandate to ensure compliance with standards and quality.

Our source confirmed that the building was reopened for construction in early 2021, adding that the work continued intensely with construction workers visiting the site both day and night, in the bid to finish the project before the supposed launch in 2022.

LASBCA also confirmed before a Coroner’s Inquest that construction of the three high-rise blocks began before provisional approval was granted.

The embattled former Commander Abba Kyari rejects prison food

https://makesensepromotions.com/the-embattled-former-commander-abba-kyari-rejects-prison-food/

The embattled former Commander, Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari, has rejected food offered him by the Nigerian Correctional Service after being remanded in prison custody on Monday.

The suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, it was learnt, opted for the food prepared by his wife or other family members.

Kyari, who is under prosecution for drug trafficking alongside four other policemen, was denied bail by the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency had in the charge before the court, accused Kyari and the other four officers of conspiracy, obstruction and dealing in cocaine worth 17.55kg.

The trial judge, Justice Emeka Nwike, ordered the drug agency to transfer the defendants to prison custody, shortly after he denied them bail.

The court held that the NDLEA placed sufficient materials before it to warrant the refusal of bail to Kyari and his co-defendants -Sunday Ubia, Simon Agirgba, and John Nuhu, who are former IRT members.

Findings on Wednesday showed that Kyari and his co-defendants have been settling down in the custodial centre but sources said the DCP has largely kept to himself since his arrival on Monday.

It was gathered that Kyari’s presence has generated some excitement among the inmates, some of who were investigated for various crimes by the IRT under the DCP.

An officer stated, “We suspected that he may not eat the food being served here. So, we were not surprised when he opted for the food prepared by his wife or family members.

“His presence has, however, generated excitement in the facility. Many inmates who had had some encounters with him and others who heard about his ongoing trial have been discussing the fact that a senior policeman like him was remanded in Kuje where some individuals he investigated are also serving time.”

The NCoS spokesman, Francis Enobore, said inmates facing prosecution had the right to eat food prepared by their family members, noting that they are free to provide their food by themselves.

He stated, “Our law allows us to request any inmate who wishes to do self-feeding to apply through a formal application to the officer in-charge of the custodial centre. Subject to the approval of the official in-charge, the applicant will make arrangements with whoever he wishes to bring food for him.”

“The caveat is that if the person fails to bring food, he would not be fed from the service’s kitchen. Again, whoever is bringing his food; it is compulsory the person tastes the food in the presence of the officer conducting the visit to ensure that the food is wholesome before passing it over to the inmate.”

Makesense Promotions gathered that, Enobore explained that no alcohol drink or cigarettes are allowed in the correctional centres, adding that 12 officers were facing sanctions for breaching the law on trafficking of illegal materials into the facility.

“No alcoholic drink or cigarette is allowed in the facility. Wherever you found them in the yard, they are a product of trafficking and we deal seriously with such issues.

“There is a long list before me now of officers to be dismissed for trafficking. Five will be dismissed while seven others will be reduced in rank,” he said

Politics / NNPC Apologises To Nigerians Over Bad Fuel, Long Queues by alphonsojaybaz: 8:07am On Feb 17, 2022

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, has apologised to Nigerians over the importation of the off-spec PMS.

The group managing director of NNPC Ltd, Mele Kyari, who tendered the apology when he appeared before the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Downstream, said the situation was completely unavoidable as the problem was not envisaged.

He, however, gave assurance that the distribution of petrol would nomalise in the weeks ahead.

“We regret this situation. It is completely unavoidable; we didn’t see it coming. We apologise to Nigerians. We didn’t see this coming,” he said.

Kyari disclosed that before the end of the month, about 2.1 billion litres of the product would have been injected into the system.

“I am assuring more supply plan. 2.1bn litres by the end of this month. We have enough supply. We will normalise distribution. We will contain this development,” he said.

Kyari, who gave a background to the ongoing scarcity, he blamed the situation of the cargo with the high methanol content.

According to him, the withdrawal of the five cargoes created a shortfall in product supply. He however noted that the company had imported a quantity that will close the gap and restore adequate supply.

He, however, explained that the NNPC Ltd had been in a business agreement with all importers and it was a specific requirement that fuel blended with a high quantity of methanol should not be brought into the country.

Earlier, the chairman of the committee, Abdullahi Mahmoud had told the NNPC to be up and doing in its responsibilities.

He said what happened had placed Nigerians in a very difficult situation adding that the country and its people are paying the price for a seemingly deliberate failure.

Some members of the community who expressed their anger said despite NNPC’s explanation and measures to tackle the situation, anybody who neglected his responsibilities must be held responsible.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has challenged the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration to expose culprits responsible for circulation of toxic fuel, just as it said moves to withdraw N201 billion for cleaning up the poisonous fuel is a ploy to siphon money from the national coffers.

PDP also said the APC-led administration is pushing Nigerians to take to the streets in protest against its continued arrogance, alleged corruption, insensitivity to the feelings of the people as well as alleged shielding of those who imported toxic fuel into the country.

PDP national publicity secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said it is saddening that the APC administration has continued to turn deaf ears to the cries by Nigerians, just as he expressed shock that the NNPC Ltd is seeking an estimated N201 billion to clean up the adulterated fuel.

Ologunagba in a statement said, “It is clear that this is another ploy by officials of the APC administration to continue to pilfer the national treasury to fund APC’s rigging plans ahead of the 2023 elections as well as to finance the wasteful lifestyles of its leaders to the detriment of other Nigerians.

“Such move by the APC to further fleece the nation amounts to pushing the already exasperated citizens to the wall. The APC government would have nobody but itself to blame over the possible consequences of its continued impunity, insensitivity and disregard to the feelings of Nigerians.

“It is instructive to note that the APC has remained unyielding since our party demanded an investigation into allegations that APC leaders connived with some foreign interests to import very cheap heavily contaminated fuel laden with methanol in their desperation to corruptly raise billions of naira to fund APC’s plots to rig the 2023 general elections.

“Nigerians can recall that our party, well-meaning Nigerians and organisations had exposed and challenged APC’s plot to siphon N2.557 trillion padded as fuel subsidy for 2022. Having been so exposed, the APC resorted to fleecing Nigerians through importation of toxic fuel and now seeks to fritter N201 billion under the guise of cleaning up the adulterated fuel.”

PDP added that the failure of the APC administration to set up an independent commission of enquiry on the “APC Toxic Fuel ImportGate” to ascertain the individuals involved in the deal who undertook the pre-inspection and how much was paid for very cheap contaminated fuel, is fast putting the nation on edge.

“The only way to douse the tension is for the APC administration to heed to demands by Nigerians and expose APC leaders allegedly involved in the importation of the toxic fuel, get them to pay compensation particularly to those whose vehicles and equipment were damaged by the bad fuel as well as bear the cost of the said cleanup.”

The PDP however called for the immediate sack of the minister of state for petroleum resources, Timipre Sylva, for misleading Nigerians and concealing critical information at the onset of this saga, having refused and failed as a public official with duty to Nigerians when he said on national TV that he could not name persons involved in the fraud.”

The PDP also urged President Buhari to hands off responsibilities as minister of petroleum resources and allow competent professionals to man the ministry in order to restore sanity in the system.

“This is because the headship of the Petroleum Ministry as presently constituted is peopled with persons with no relevant education, experience and expertise to manage this critical sector that accounts for over 90 percent of the revenue of the nation,” the party said

Also yesterday, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said the non-oil sector of the Nigerian economy could be stronger, benefitting from its recent growth momentum, higher production from the new Dangote Refinery, and supportive credit policies.

In its executive board 2021 Article IV consultation with Nigeria which was released recently, IMF said Nigeria’s ratification of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) could also yield a positive boost to the non-oil sector while oil production could rebound, supported by the more generous terms of the Petroleum Industry Act.

Nigeria exited recession in the fourth quarter of 2020 and its output rose by 4.1 per cent (y-o-y) in the third quarter, with broad-based growth except for the oil sector, which is facing security and technical challenges.

While growth was projected at 3 per cent for 2021, it stated that headline inflation rose sharply during the pandemic, reaching a peak of 18.2 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) in March 2021, but has since declined to 15.6 per cent in December.

The institution attributed this to the new harvest season and opening of land borders, although it noted that the reported unemployment rates (end of 2020) had yet to come down. It, however, confirmed that more recent COVID-19 monthly surveys have shown that employment was back at its pre-pandemic level.

“Despite the recovery in oil prices, the general government fiscal deficit is projected to widen in 2021 to 5.9 per cent of GDP, reflecting implicit fuel subsidies and higher security spending,” the Fund said, adding that the consolidated government revenue-to-GDP ratio at 7.5 per cent remains among the lowest in the world.

“After registering a historic deficit in 2020, the current account improved in 2021, and gross FX reserves have improved, supported by the IMF’s SDR allocation and Eurobond placements in September 2021.

“Notwithstanding the authorities’ proactive approach to contain COVID-19 infection rates and fatalities and the recent growth improvement, socio-economic conditions remain a challenge. Levels of food insecurity have risen, and the poverty rate is estimated to have risen during the pandemic.”

The directors highlighted the urgency of fiscal consolidation to create policy space and reduce debt sustainability risks and called for significant domestic revenue mobilisation.

They said Nigeria’s exchange rate reforms should be accompanied by macroeconomic policies to contain inflation, structural reforms to improve transparency and governance, and clear communications regarding exchange rate policy.

“Directors considered it appropriate to maintain a supportive monetary policy in the near term, with continued vigilance against inflation and balance of payments risks. They encouraged the authorities to stand ready to adjust the monetary stance if inflationary pressures increase,” the consultation noted.

“Directors recommended strengthening the monetary operational framework over the medium term – focusing on the primacy of price stability – and scaling back the central bank’s quasi-fiscal operations. Directors welcomed the resilience of the banking sector and the planned expiration of pandemic-related support measures.

“They agreed that while the newly launched eNaira could help foster financial inclusion and improve the delivery of social assistance, close monitoring of associated risks will be important,” the IMF added.

Meanwhile, operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Kwara State yesterday arrested scores of fuel black marketers in Ilorin, the state capital.

They also seized an unspecified number of kegs containing fuel from the black marketers.

The state’s NSCDC commandant, Iskil Makinde, made the arrest of the black marketers public after an on-the-spot assessment visits to some filling stations in Ilorin.

Makinde said his men discovered that while some filling stations were hoarding fuel, others were selling at N250 per litre.

He warned that, henceforth, the corps will deal ruthlessly with filling stations hoarding fuel and creating artificial scarcity of the product in the state.

“The NSCDC task force led by the head of the anti-vandal unit, ACC Ayinde Yusuf discovered that some filling stations had the products but refused to sell while some were selling the product for as high as N250 per litre against the recommended price of N165.

“Those that have the products but chose to hoard it were ordered to start selling, and our teams ensured they emptied their fuel dump before they left the place.

“Also, some were caught selling above the normal price and were asked to revert to the recommended N165,” Makinde stated.

Kaduna residents have continued to face tough times in search of petrol with black marketers selling the commodity for N700/litre.

Our correspondent who went round Kaduna metropolis reported that black marketers with jerry-cans positioned themselves in some locations within the metropolis, selling the commodity to motorists at exorbitant prices.

The long queues in some fueling stations continued as many stations were under lock and key.

It was observed further that few fueling stations with the fuel were selling a litre at N220/N230 to motorists.

Meanwhile, transport fares have risen, with drivers lamenting the scarcity of fuel.

One of the drivers at Command Junction motor park, Television, Ayuba Silas, said: “Now it is N3,000 per passenger from Kaduna to Abuja against N2,500. This fuel scarcity is a serious problem to us commercial drivers. Government should do something urgently.”

Residents of Akure, the Ondo state capital were on Wednesday morning stranded following the fuel scarcity which has made many petrol marketers shut down their stations.

Makesense Promotion’s correspondent who went round the state capital observed that civil servants and others that wanted to catch a bus or taxi to their various offices could not as few commercial vehicles were operating, with most of them queued up at filling stations.

It was observed that most of the filling stations that opened for business were selling from only one or two pumps, prolonging the misery of motorists.

Some of the vehicles had been at the filling stations as early as 5am as long queues were observed along Ondo Road, Cathedral and Arakale, Oba-Adesida roads among others.

Many major bus stops were filled with passengers begging few private vehicles plying major roads for free rides.

Some residents who spoke to Makesense Promotions lamented the suffering being added to the economic challenge they had been facing before.

They called on the federal government to address what they described as an unfortunate development before it gets out of hand.

Fuel scarcity is gradually biting hard in Damaturu and other parts of Yobe State with the resurfacing of long queues in filling stations where the product is available.

Checks by Makesense Promotions revealed that many petrol stations within the metropolis have remained closed over lack of product.

In few other stations where it was available, motorists waited endlessly to get fuel.

Mamman Mohammed, a taxi driver who after spending about five hours, lamented buying a litre of petrol at the cost of N185.

“We do not know what is happening in this country and nobody is saying anything concerning the fuel scarcity”, he lamented.

He appealed to the federal government and other relevant stakeholders in the petroleum industry to come to the aid of ordinary Nigerians who depend on petrol for their daily bread.

Another resident, Abubakar Gujja said he had been in the queue at the NNPC Mega station since morning and eventually got the product at about 11am at the regulated price.

“We don’t know the cause of the scarcity. We just discovered queues in petrol stations since last week; the queue has continued since then,” Abubakar Gujja, a resident, said.

Another taxi driver, Musa Gulani, said, “Let me tell you, I bought a gallon of 5 litres of petrol at N1,200.

“We cannot continue like this; something urgent needs to be done”, he appealed.

Reports indicate that some petrol stations in other parts of the state sell the product at N200 per litre.
