Health / Exercising 4 Hours After Learning Boosts Memory by alpinedna: 4:50am On Jun 19, 2016
Researchers assert the notion that physical activity is beneficial for the brain as well as the body, after finding that exercising 4 hours after learning could help boost long-term memory.

Study co-author Guillén Fernández, of the Donders Institute at the Radboud University Medical Center in the Netherlands, and colleagues found that adults who exercised 4 hours after completing a learning task had better memory recall 2 days later.

However, exercising immediately after the learning task or not at all appeared to have no effect on memory retention.

The researchers recently published their findings in the journalCurrent Biology.

For the study, the team enrolled 72 individuals to complete a 40-minute task in which they were required to view 90 pictures and learn the associated locations.

The participants were then allocated to one of three groups: one group exercised immediately after the learning task, one group exercised 4 hours after the learning task, and one group did not exercise at all.

Both exercise groups completed 35 minutes of interval training using an ergometer.

Memory retention improved for delayed exercise group

All participants underwent a memory recall test 2 days later, which assessed how much information they retained from the learning task.

They also underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), which measured brain activity during memory recall.

Compared with participants who exercised immediately after the learning task or not at all, those who exercised 4 hours after were found to have better memory recall after 2 days.

Furthermore, the researchers found that when participants who exercised 4 hours after the learning task correctly recalled information, they had more precise representations of correct answers in the hippocampus – the brain region important for learning and memory.

Commenting on the possible implications of their findings, the authors say:

“[…] our results provide initial evidence that properly timed physical exercise can alter mnemonic processes at delayed retrieval and improve memory retention over a period of at least 48 hours.

The economic, healthy, and practical nature of exercise makes it ideal for interventions in educational and clinical settings. Our experiment thus serves as a proof-of-principle study that could inspire future applications of exercise to boost long-term memory in various populations.”
While the authors are unable to explain exactly why delayed exercise appears to boost long-term memory, they point to animal studies that have shown exercise can increase levels of catecholamines, which are chemical compounds that can improve memory consolidation.

In future research, the team plans to investigate the underlying mechanisms by which delayed physical activity affects learning and memory.

Health / [must Read] Reasons Why You Should Quit Taking Alcohol And Processed Meat by alpinedna: 6:37pm On Apr 22, 2016
Drinking alcohol, eating processed meat and being overweight increase the risk of developing stomach cancers, according to a major new scientific report released by the American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Fund.

The Continuous Update Project (CUP) report was led by the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) and the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF).

Scientists systematically gathered and analyzed data relating to stomach cancer, after which a panel of leading international experts evaluated the results independently.

Worldwide, there were 952,000 cases of stomach cancer in 2012, or 7% of all new cancer cases.

Stomach cancer is the third most common cause of cancer death. It affects men twice as much as women, and it is more common among older people, with the average age of diagnosis in the US being 72 years.

In Europe and the US, the survival rate is 25-28%, rising to 63% if it is diagnosed early. But symptoms may not appear until the later stages, and some 70% of cases worldwide are diagnosed late, leading to a lower survival rate. Eastern Asia and China are particularly affected.

Health / [must Read] Why Do We Sleep Badly During The First Night In A New Place? by alpinedna: 6:29pm On Apr 22, 2016
Most people will have experienced the so-called first-night effect at some point in their life. When sleeping in an unfamiliar setting for the first time, it is likely to take longer to drop off, and the sleep we finally do get will be broken and unsatisfying. For the first time, scientists have discovered why this might be.

Although the first-night effect (FNE) has been part of the human experience since humans first slept in a new cave, the science behind it has remained a mystery.

The FNE is so familiar and consistent that sleep researchers routinely discard the first night of data, as they know it will be unusual and, therefore, unusable.

Researchers from Brown University in Rhode Island, led by Yuka Sasaki, set out to investigate the odd phenomenon in more depth.

The team wanted to know why the FNE occurs, and whether there is any benefit to it.

Using advanced neuroimaging techniques to take snapshots of the sleeping brain, the team built up a detailed picture of the sleep activity during the first night in a new location.

Measurements included magnetoencephalography, structural MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), and polysomnography (measuring blood oxygen levels, breathing and heart rate, eye and leg movements).

Slow wave sleep, rather than REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, was the main parameter that the team focused on because it acts as a direct measurement of the depth of an individual's sleep.

Health / The Benefits Of Early Morning Sex by alpinedna: 8:42am On Apr 01, 2016
They say having sex first thing in the morning not only improves your love life, it is also beneficial to your health. Early morning sex puts a smile on your face, boosts your health, looks and relationship.Scientists say people who start their days by having sex are all-around healthier and happier than those who don’t. According to Debby Herbenick, Ph.D., author of Because It Feels Good, having sex in the morning makes you stronger and more beautiful. She said: “Having sex in the morning releases the feel-good chemical oxytocin, which makes couples feel loving and bonded all day long and climaxing releases chemicals that boost levels of estrogen, which improves the tone and texture of your skin and hair.
Some other benefits of morning sex include:

1. Apart from the fact that regular morning sex makes you feel upbeat for the rest of the day, it also helps in building a stronger immune system.

2. Believe it or not, it makes you less susceptible to catching a cold or flu and can also improve the quality of your hair, skin, and nails.

3. Having morning sex three times a week lessens the risk of a heart attack or stroke.

4. You aren’t bothered by the responsibilities of the day yet and your mind is clearer.

5. You’ve just been sleeping and are hopefully well-rested and can devote more energy to sex.

6. Sex is relaxing and can help manage stress.

7. You start the day more in sync when you’ve pleasured one another both physically and emotionally.

8. You show your spouse that he/she is a priority, and so is your sex life.

9. Sex is exercise. It’s a great way to work up an early morning appetite as breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

10. Early morning sex can be a great incentive to wake-up and put you in a more positive mood. Wake-up sex will help you feel happier and healthier throughout the day.

Politics / Open Letter To President Buhari: Nigerians Are Suffering And Frustrated by alpinedna: 6:10am On Mar 02, 2016
You excellency sir, I thought perhaps I should bring you up to speed with what is happening to Nigerians, the people who you claim to love and care about, the people who trhem at heart and for this reason they voted you into office. Since you assumed your highly elevated position it seems, perhaps, the seat has distanced you from the people, you've lost touch with the pains of the common Nigerian so you probably don't know how difficult life is for us Nigerians as a people. Since you became president of this nation of ours, you've spent more time in transit to other countries than you've stayed at home. You rarely visit us, maybe you show up for ceremonial functions and urgent matters and then you are off again. All these waka your supporters (which I am one) say are #NeedfulWaka to reposition the country and redeem the damaged image of the country in the international community, but like they say 'too much of everything is bad' and this may be the reason Nigerians feel that you should stay at home and feel their pain and frustration. I am a common Nigerian and I'm always in the midst of everyday common Nigerians, I know where it pains us, unlike you who wines and dines with only people of the high society may not be aware of the sufferings of the common Nigerians.

It's almost a year since you ascended the presidency and we are yet to begin to feel the good life you promised us, though we remain optimistic that in due time we would. Even your detractors and antagonists are also optimistic and they know you can do it. In about a month it will make it one year since Nigerians rejected impunity, cluelessness, recklessness and corruption. It will be one year since that historic election that brought you to office and we're yet to know what your economic policy or policies are. Neither do you have any economic team in place at the moment, and for this, the Nigerian economy has suffered greatly. Prices of commodities in the market have risen astronomically alongside the rise of dollar in the parallel market. Mr President, Nigerians are suffering and there is no succour for them in sight and this has made us even more frustrated.

Sir, you live in affluence and comfort, you eat good food, your vehicles are fully air conditioned, you never experienced the kind of heat we feel in the afternoon through the night to morning, we don't have that luxury. Incidentally the sun rays this year seems to be hotter than that of previous years and we don't even have the hope we would have power to sleep under the fan, so we hustle under the hotness of sun and sleep in the heat of the night. Personally I have been sleeping on the bare floor of my bedroom because the heat of the night is unbearable. To make matters worse, fuel scarcity is here once again to further add salt to the our injury. At the early stage of your presidency electricity became stable for most part of the day, we agreed your body language was working wonders. I truly miss those days.

Since you came on, you bravely took up the fight against corruption by the horn. This fight gets bigger everyday as more corrupt officials in the past administration are being picked up and investigated. In the Nine months of your holding sway at the helms of this nation, the fight against corruption has taken centre stage while every other sector is deteriorating. At the mention of your name corrupt officials in the past administration voluntarily fall sick. I tend to agree with former president Goodluck Jonathan when he said "corruption is not our biggest problem". To my mind, Corruption should be our third biggest problem after "warped mentality of the citizens" and "Lack of the spirit of nationalism and patriotism" respectively. A lot needs to be done to re- orientate the citizens.

Before the elections I galvanised and campaigned rigorously in my own little way for your candidacy so that you could be elected President of Nigerian. I wrote many articles published online and many more I shared on social media, I joined the "Buhari Volunteer Group", I distributed flyers and was ready to engage anybody who thought otherwise of your candidacy. I did all these because I believed Buhari is the only potent antidote for the myriad of problems facing Nigeria. Many will think I have become disillusioned with the change mantra and the Buhari Project, they are far from being correct. I still believe in your ability to lead this country out of the trenches, but we need more proactive measures. The entire process is taking too long. The fact is, your government is yet to hit the ground running. It's 9 months gone already and it still feels as if you just got elected. While you might be busy globetrotting let me inform you that many Nigerians in their thousands have lost their jobs, many businesses have folded up, obviously you are not aware of all these.

While we wait for you to take us to the Promised Land, unlike the biblical Moses we don't want to die before that time.

Education / [must Read] What Does Your Academic Qualification Worth? by alpinedna: 5:57am On Mar 02, 2016
Trending Topic:

Many people strongly believe that academic qualification is overrated.

Why is this important?

There is confusion about whether or not education guarantees success in life.

Long Story Short:

Educated or not, everybody has a role to play on earth and the most important thing is we can all strive to make the world a better place (if we choose to).

Long Story

Popular American rapper, Killermike once said; “education’s become a pipeline to prison, simply a tool used for mass incarceration, call it the new plantation, call it the new era of slavery...” Before evaluating the validity of his comment, there is need to define what education is vis-a-vis the school system.

Education is as old as the world itself, from the days of ‘The Hunter’ to the Computer age, whether formal or informal, everyone has some form of education. My focus here is on the formal education cum the school system. Individual purposes for pursuing education can vary, understanding the goals and means of educational socialization processes may also differ according to the sociological paradigm used.

Health / [must Read] The Most Dangerous Sexual Position For Men - Study Reveals by alpinedna: 5:53am On Feb 28, 2016
A study has revealed men are paying a painful price for experimenting in the bedroom.

Scientists in Brazil have found that more adventurous sexual positions - most notably 'cowgirl' and 'doggy-style' - are responsible for the vast majority of all fractured joysticks in the bedroom.

In contrast, the traditional, steady missionary position affected only 21 per cent.

Doctors and academics examined patients attending three A&E units with suspected 'penile fractures' over a 13 year period.

Half of them had reported hearing a cracking or popping sound before the rare fracture. A determined and bullish 20 per cent battled on regardless.

The 'cowgirl' position - or woman on top - caused almost half the fractures, followed by 'doggy-style' - with woman on all fours - on 29 per cent. continue reading @ http://www.alpinedna.com/?p=1911

Business / [must Read] Is THIS The No.1 Tool For Successful Leaders? by alpinedna: 12:53pm On Feb 22, 2016
"Effective leaders ask questions instead of giving orders."

Dale Carnegie wrote that in his classic, How to Win Friends and Influence Peoplenearly 80 years ago, but the advice is as good today as it was then.

The higher people rise to power, the less likely it is that others around them challenge them or tell them bad news. Bad news often get filtered and edited as messages cascade upwards and sometimes is it hard for top leaders to get a real feel for what is actually happening.

One of the most powerful tools leaders can have is to ask questions and then listen to the answers. This goes especially for questions that can’t be answered with a simple one-word-answer.

Questions help us to look at things in a new light, challenge the status quo, search for innovative ideas and figure out how to do things differently. The art of asking the right questions with the willingness to listen to the answers is one of the most important tool in the toolbox of top executives.

How to ask better questions

Often questions can feel like accusations to the person on the receiving end, making them instantly defensive. But empowering questions allows the person a safe way to share without feeling at fault. So instead of asking, “Why is this project behind schedule?” you could ask, “How do you feel about the way the project is proceeding?” and you’ll get a much different sort of answer.

Some ways to make sure you’re asking empowering questions:

Ask questions that increase clarity. “Can you explain more about this?”
Ask questions that improve relationships. Instead of, “Did you meet your targets this month?” ask “How are things going this month?”

Business / [must Read] Why Attitude Is More Important Than IQ by alpinedna: 12:42pm On Feb 22, 2016
When it comes to success, it's easy to think that people blessed with brains are inevitably going to leave the rest of us in the dust. But new research from Stanford University will change your mind (and your attitude).

Psychologist Carol Dweck has spent her entire career studying attitude and performance, and her latest study shows that your attitude is a better predictor of your success than your IQ.

Dweck found that people's core attitudes fall into one of two categories: a fixed mindset or a growth mindset.

With a fixed mindset, you believe you are who you are and you cannot change. This creates problems when you're challenged because anything that appears to be more than you can handle is bound to make you feel hopeless and overwhelmed.

According to Dweck, success in life is all about how you deal with failure. She describes the approach to failure of people with the growth mindset this way,

"Failure is information -- we label it failure, but it's more like, 'This didn't work, and I'm a problem solver, so I'll try something else.'"
Regardless of which side of the chart you fall on, you can make changes and develop a growth mindset. What follows are some strategies that will fine-tune your mindset and help you make certain it's as growth oriented as possible.

Don't stay helpless. We all hit moments when we feel helpless. The test is how we react to that feeling. We can either learn from it and move forward or let it drag us down. Continue reading @ http://www.alpinedna.com/?p=1792
Business / [must Read] Ten Things Top Performers Do Every Day by alpinedna: 9:29am On Feb 22, 2016
When you are an HR person like me, a big part of your job is to zip around from department to department. You notice a lot, if you keep your eyes open. You see which managers are on their game and on the ball, and which managers think their job description is to stay in their office all day with their door closed.

You see which employees get the most done and have the most fun, and very often they are the same people! It’s fun to rock your job, and contrary to a lot of people’s opinion being a top performer does not mean sitting at your desk with your head down cranking out the work all day. Top performers take a higher-altitude view of their work.

They know what they have to get done every day — the big-ticket items that will move their agendas forward the fastest. Knocking off another five or six minor items on the never-ending To Do list is satisfying in the moment but when you get up tomorrow morning, your To Do list won’t be any shorter.

Top performers focus on the most critical goals every day. They bob and weave as circumstance require. They stay awake and alert, and most of all they listen to their own gut!

Here are ten things top performers do every day.

Plan the Day

It’s never a good idea to bound into your workplace and dive into whatever hits your eye first. Top performers plan their day. They might do it on the way home from work the night before or before they leave the office, but when they arrive at work they already know what they’re going to tackle first, second and third.

Set Intention

Top performers go to work with a goal every day. They set intention in their minds, like this: “Today I will get things straightened out with Julia about the pricing schedule and make sure she and I are good after our little argument yesterday. I will get the sales-by-customer reports to Becca and talk to Bruno about my vacation in June.”

They have lots of other things to do during the day apart from these three items, but they commit to handle the most important issues on their plates before they turn to other action items. Notice that your vacation time is a top priority! continue reading @ http://www.alpinedna.com/?p=1784
Health / Tips On How To Get Rid Of Premature Gray Hair by alpinedna: 6:44am On Feb 22, 2016
It is believed that on an average, men tend to find their first gray hair around the age of 30. Women, on the other hand, are likely to find their first gray hair at about 35 years of age.

Most people, whether men or women, have a considerable amount of gray hair by the age of 50. Asian and Afro-American individuals usually go gray at a relatively later stage that is, around late 30s and mid 40s.

Basically, strands of hair turn gray when the body stops producing melanin pigment in the hair follicles as the melanocytes begin to die as your increasing age.

Hair color is primarily determined by the depth and concentration of this pigment. Thus, your hairs gradually grow grey or white. As this a normal process, graying of hair is considered as a telltale sign of aging.

A recent study suggests that an accumulation of hydrogen peroxide in the hair follicles can cause the same. Moreover, premature graying is often associated with factors like stress, genetic predisposition, hormonal imbalance, poor diet, use of concentrated hair dyes, cigarette smoking, and so on.

Certain illnesses such as sinusitis, chronic cold, vitiligo, etc. can also cause this problem. Besides, premature graying of hair, along with hair thinning can be a symptom of thyroid disorder, too.

How to Get Rid of Premature Grey Hair

Although plucking your gray hair out may seem to be the easiest way to get rid of your premature gray hair, there are better solutions to help you deal with this problem.

Hair Color
Indian Gooseberry
Henna
Black Tea
Rosemary and Sage Tea
Curry Leaves
Ridge Gourd
Ginger & Honey

Using a hair color is the most common and obvious way to cover your grays. It is usually suggested to opt for a semi-permanent or demi-permanent hair color on your hair if your hair is just starting to turn grey. They last for about a few weeks and do not damage your hair. However, in cases where there is almost 45-50% graying, it is better to use a permanent hair color that goes well with your skin and hair tone. Plus, prefer to use natural or neutral hair colors that are closest to your original hair color.

Indian gooseberry or amla is highly beneficial for reversing premature graying of hair. To prepare this remedy, you need to amla powder in coconut oil until the powder turns black. Cool and strain the solution. Finally, massage this oil on your hair and scalp on a regular basis. Amla powder can be purchased from a store or prepared at your home itself by drying fresh amla pieces in sunlight and eventually grinding them to get the powder. Besides, you can apply store-bought pure amla oil, a paste of amla powder and warm water, or a combination of equal parts of Indian gooseberry juice and almond oil to promote hair growth and eliminate grey hair. Furthermore, you can soak dried amla pieces in water overnight and use the solution as a last rinse after your hair wash. Plus, you may apply a tablespoon of amla pulp mixed with some lime juice and leave it overnight. continue reading @ http://www.alpinedna.com/?p=1776

Health / Tips On How To Get Rid Of Stretch Marks by alpinedna: 6:43am On Feb 19, 2016
Stretch marks are generally associated with pregnancy, but they can be caused by other reasons too.

For instance, they may develop due to changes in body size brought about by puberty, rapid weight gain or weight loss, gain in muscle mass, etc.

In addition, some individuals have a genetic tendency to develop stretch marks faster.

More often than not, they appear on the chest, stomach, upper arms, hips, thighs, and calves. The appearance of stretch marks, however, can vary slightly from one individual to another.

For instance, they appear as pale pink streaks or scars on fair-skinned individuals. On dark skin tones, they are fairly light. These marks usually take time to fade.

Moreover, it is difficult to diminish mature stretch marks. Therefore it is best to take steps to reduce stretch marks as soon as you notice them. Basically, they are scars on deeper layers of skin. continue reading @ http://www.alpinedna.com/?p=1670
Health / How To Get Rid Of Cracked Heels by alpinedna: 6:21am On Feb 19, 2016
Cracked heels, also referred to as heel fissures are generally caused by excessively dry skin. This common foot problem, thus, tends to worsen during the dry, winter months.

Besides, factors like nutritional deficiencies, standing or walking for long periods of time, wearing open-backed or thin-soled shoes that do not support your feet, etc. may lead to this problem.

As expected, cracked heels are embarrassing as they are quite ugly to look at. Plus, cracked heels may be accompanied by itching and burning.

Moreover, when neglected for a long time, they become painful and may begin to bleed. In addition, most moisturizing treatments fail to penetrate the accumulated thick, dead skin on the heels.

So, it is best to pay attention to your cracked heels and heal them as soon as possible. Furthermore, individuals suffering from conditions like eczema, psoriasis, diabetes and circulatory problems should take good care of their feet. continue reading @ http://www.alpinedna.com/?p=1677

Apart from your armpits, back, and legs, your face too, can be prone to excessive perspiration, which can be particularly embarrassing in public scenarios.

When your face is embellished with beads of sweat it makes you feel more self-conscious rather than confident.

In medical terms, excessive perspiration is referred to as hyperhidrosis.

When it extends to the back of the neck, forehead, and back, then it is known as craniofacial hyperhidrosis but it is usually rare.

It can be caused by conditions like Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, malignant tumors, thyroid disorders, etc. Facial perspiration can also be triggered by emotional stress. Simply sweating more than other people due to heat or exertion, however, is not necessarily hyperhidrosis.

How to Get Rid of Excessive Facial Sweating

Apple Cider Vinegar
Witch Hazel
Aloe Vera Juice
Tomato Juice
Sage Tea
Acupuncture
Facial Wipes

Take this mixture three times in a day, preferably half an hour prior to a meal. Apart from controlling perspiration, it shall also help you lose excess weight.

Everyone is familiar with the smell of stinky feet and most of do not like it. There are many people who suffer from bad foot odor may feel embarrassed to take their shoes off around others. Foot odor is a kind of embarrassing condition but there are many simple ways to get rid of it.

Main causes behind foot odor

Foot odor can be very embarrassing for the person suffering from it and equally challenging to treat it. But before looking for the treatment options, it is important to understand the common causes of this condition.

Here are some of the most common causes of foot odor:

Excessive sweat: The main cause of smelly feet is sweat. Each foot has 250,000 sweat glands that cause sweating. Although sweat is odorless, it creates the perfect breeding environment for odor producing bacteria which enjoys warm, moist environments. When bacteria are present on your feet it causes the offensive foot odor.

Lack of ventilation: Improper ventilation can also be the reason behind foot odor. Without proper ventilation, the sweat present on the foot cannot evaporate in a proper manner, which leads to the development of certain acids known to cause foot odor.

Fungal Infection: Any kind of fungal infection that affects the toe nails can also be the reason behind excessive foot odor. Fungal infection can even cause discoloration in the appearance of the toe nails.

Anxiety and nervousness: When a person suffers from anxiety and nervousness, it causes excessive sweating. Due to this the person can suffer from long lasting odors and irritation of the skin.

Tips to get rid of foot odor

The form of treatment option that you can choose to get rid of foot odor will basically depend upon the cause of the odor. Irrespective of the cause, you need to work on reducing sweat and providing ventilation to your feet in order to solve the problem of foot odor. Luckily there are many simple and easy things that you can do to eliminate the smelly odor from your feet and shoes.

Here are some simple tips to prevent foot odor:

Expose your feet to natural air from time to time. This will help to keep them dry. Never forget that too much sweat and moisture on your feet can be the only reason behind the smell. So, whenever you get the chance remove your shoes and socks so that your feet can enjoy some fresh air.

Wear cotton or woolen socks as these materials help to absorb more perspiration and hence they will help to keep your feet dry. Cotton and woolen socks are must for those who need to wear socks and shoes all throughout the day. continue reading @ http://www.alpinedna.com/?p=1587
Politics / What You Need To Know About Corporate Governance And Leadership by alpinedna: 8:36am On Feb 16, 2016
Trending News: It is now compulsory for Nigerian corporations (Public &Private) to comply with the Codes of Corporate Governance

Why is this important?

To ensure the economic stability of the country, to protect the interest of the least person in the society, the corporations, their employees, customers and shareholders

Long Story Short

The Code of Corporate Governance for Public Companies and the Code of Corporate Governance for Banks in Nigeria do not ensure that Managers of corporations (Public and Private) in the country possess leadership qualities

Long Story

Have you ever wondered why some companies become insolvent, or did you know about the economic crisis (which started from UK and US) that rocked the global market in 2008, or have you probably read about why the Nigerian banking sector was in crisis in 1989-1991, or why do public office holders mismanage resources of the corporations they manage? A recent example in my country would be the allegation made by the Minister of Finance against NIMASA accusing the corporation of various sharp practices. Fundamentally, these fraudulent practices are possible because those in charge have little or no regard for good corporate governance practices or they lack the basic qualities of good leadership. Thus, I have the mandate to campaign more in support of good corporate governance and leadership in both private and public sectors of the Nigerian economy.

What is Corporate Governance?

Corporate governance is the ability to put in place proper systems and proper processes for ensuring the effective management of an organisation and the oversight function of managing the organisation, the proper process includes the mode by which the organisation is governed and by which the activities of the company are conducted, it places emphasis on integrity, order, efficiency, accountability and responsibility which are qualities required of those in charge of the management of the corporation. Simply put, it is a set of process, customs, policies, laws and institutions affecting the way in which a corporation is directed, administered or controlled. It is the overall strategic plan to make the company grow, which if practiced diligently will attract investment to the company and on the larger scale, countries with good corporate governance mechanisms attract foreign direct investment more than those countries without such structure.

What is Leadership?

Leadership is the process of motivating, inspiring, and influencing individuals and groups to set and achieve goals by pulling people who want to follow voluntarily, hence, the leader is someone with vision and interpersonal skills that guides, influences, or heads the direction of a group, or team in a non-coercive modelling manner. It is important for an organisation to have a focal person that is responsible for coordinating the activities of the organisation and for showing good example so that the employees and the customers will have confidence in following him or her in achieving the objectives of the organisation.

On the failure of Corporations

Fundamentally, the failure of big corporate organisations is caused by bad corporate governance practices, the organisations without accounting responsibility, operations responsibility, proper rules and regulations by which it operates will be free for all and such will hardly survive. This makes the issue of corporate governance extremely important to the economy of any nation. Due to the importance of some of these big companies to the economy of the nation and stability of the economy, the governments of developing countries like Nigeria have now taken the issue of corporate governance more seriously. continue reading @ http://www.alpinedna.com/?p=1581

Health / Know The Household Chores That Can Keep You In Shape Instead Of Going To The Gym by alpinedna: 11:59am On Feb 15, 2016
So if you don't have time to pump weights at the gym or attend Pilates classes, then substitute them with everyday household tasks or jobs in the garden.

They will stretch and tone your muscles, and you'll burn up to 315 calories an hour - that's more than twice as many as you would sitting in front of the television.

Sounds unbelievable? We put it to the test. The results are a scientific estimate of what a ten-stone person would burn while doing the following activities at a comfortable pace, based on the calories burned in an hour per pound of body weight. If you push yourself very hard at, say, walking, add more calories.

And it should be remembered that since housework isn't a good form of cardiovascular exercise, you will still need to work your heart and lungs with walking, swimming or cycling.

315 CALORIES
30 minutes of digging, or 45 minutes of cycling on flat ground
Digging uses the thigh and calf muscles; it is also a good form of cardiovascular exercise if you can keep it up continuously for ten minutes or more. continue reading @ http://www.alpinedna.com/?p=1562

Education / Why Being Disciplined Produces Better Results Than Being Wishful by alpinedna: 9:51pm On Oct 25, 2015
“I really want to improve my grades but I can’t just get myself to do it”. Whose fault is it? It’s got to be you because you cannot ‘get yourself’ to do it!

“I feel so fat and it is really affecting my self- esteem, I can’t just get myself to lose some weight” Yea right, you will remain fat until you decide to hit the gym!

“I am always broke and it causes me so much pain” You shall remain broke until you decide not to remain broke!

“I hate my job, I hate my boss and I hate my life” Quit the first two (after all, advising you to quit your life will mean asking you to commit suicide, you shouldn’t resort to that as it is a lazy man’s escape route) and do something that will make you happy.

A lot of people spend every day of their lives complaining about almost everything, everybody or every situation. There is a situation you are displeased with, nothing will change by merely disliking the situation, there is need to take conscious efforts to make the situation better.

Politics / Education And Technology; Towards Nation Building by alpinedna: 8:47am On Feb 15, 2015
Well, it is the middle of February and as usual, a lot of interesting stories are being told all over the world, the major highlights being the hostile actions of Greek’s new leader towards European Union (he doesn’t want to let sleeping dogs lie), the barbaric and indiscriminate killings of hostages by ISIL, the postponement of general elections in Nigeria (‘Uncle Jona’ is at it again), and alas! Valentine is here.

It is apparent that there can ever be a peaceful world, (someone must be killing someone at some point in time), surprisingly, as heinous as the world may seem, some nations, families and individuals still thrive, you might want to ask yourself why this is so, I will leave you to think about that.

The 21st Century has its own idiosyncrasies and uniqueness, no doubt, one of the unique features of this century is the fact that in many countries, the Private Sector is the driver of economy, in other words, we have many entrepreneurs all around the world than we used to, if you want to know whether a nation is prosperous, peep into the Private sector of such nation and you will realise that the skookum economy is hinged on the bedrock of development of private businesses.

The question that comes to one’s mind is if everyone can easily make money in the 21st century by simply being an entrepreneur, then why do we need to go to school? That is a very valid question, but before I answer, there is need to have an insight into what education and the school system is all about.

Indubitably, education is as old as the world itself, from the days of The Hunter to the Computer age, whether formally or informally, everyone has some form of education. My focus here is on the formal education viz; the school system, I am interested in the essence and significance of the school system in the 21st century whether or not there are advantages and disadvantages.

Individual purposes for pursuing education can vary. Understanding the goals and means of educational socialization processes may also differ according to the sociological paradigm used.

The incunabula years of schooling generally focus around developing basic interpersonal and communication and literary skills. This lays a foundation for more complex skills and subjects. Later, education usually turns toward gaining the knowledge and skills needed to create value and establish a livelihood

People also pursue education for its own sake to satisfy innate curiosity, out of interest in a specific subject or skill, or for overall personal development.

Education is often understood as a means of overcoming handicaps, achieving greater equality, and acquiring wealth and status for all (Sargent 1994). Education is also often perceived as a place where children can develop according to their unique needs and potentials, with the purpose of developing every individual to their full.

There are various sectors that Private entrepreneurs invest into which in the long run lead into nation building, for the past two decades, you will agree with me that the field of Technology has produced many billionaires around the world same way Agriculture and Oil have boosted economies of various nations, an evidence of this is Bill Gates, the owner of Microsoft, who is also the richest man in the whole world.

Amongst various criticisms or scepticisms which investors consider before investing into a technologically based or oriented firm is its volatile nature, many have argued that it is unpredictable and like the money and stock market, anything can go wrong, nonetheless, we cannot ignore the fact that technology is making the world progress in a number of ways (not without its adverse effects, anyways), and its like humans are becoming machines or computers, look around, how many persons can do without their phones in 3 days, gadgets are now replacing human relationships.

The question to be asked is can technology be incorporated into the school curriculum in a way that will boost a nation’s economy, in other words, can technology be a blessing to the school system on one hand and a nation on the other hand?

To start with, in Nigeria, for example, many high schools still make use of chalk boards, not only do I consider this stressful and unhealthy, it is arsyvarsy, I know of a faculty in one of Nigerian Universities where there are electronic boards which have never been used since over 4 years after installation, the lecturers prefer to write on boards with markers.

If properly utilised, technology will aid research and improve learning and also create a conducive learning environment, the curricula should include new courses, Nigeria should start preparing its citizens for jobs that do not exist yet. A curricula, creating communicative, imaginative, tech-savvy, multilingual students who are prepared for jobs that do not yet exist.

For instance, nothing stops a pupil of a primary school from learning basics of web designing and development, creation of applications, video games, programming and many other intelligent ideas that come with the proper use of technology, not only will this create jobs, it will promote a nation’s economy. A whole child approach is the belief that each student in each classroom should be safe, engaged, supported and challenged. It is high time school curricula in Nigeria started promoting skills, talents and ideas, against the backdrop of straight-jacketed and stringent ways of learning theories within the walls of the classroom.

The curricula should be fashioned in a way that will develop the creative mind of the child, so that on the overall, the school system will not be faulted for engendering liabilities rather than assets. The present school system confines Nigerian kids within a box, it is only the very few and lucky ones among them that get outside the box, thus, a Nigerian graduate will not complain of how there are no jobs because right from a very tender age, he or she would have learnt ways to create jobs if no one is offering, this is one of the pecks of Capitalism.

I foresee an economy where Nigerians will get known for invention, China’s economy have grown rapidly over the past few years because the government encourages innovations and the market also encourages their local manufacturers, Nigeria as a nation must begin to appreciate, promote and patronize its talents, skills and businesses, this way, over dependence on government for survival will reduce, the only help the people will need from the government is the enabling environment for business.

No doubt, this is a very broad issue, I cannot possibly write everything that needs to be said about it now, but I believe as events unfold, we will be dealing with it broadly. Remember, Valentine is not about indulging in all the vices of this world with your partner, its about showing love to your fellow humans, why don’t you celebrate this Valentine differently by showing love to someone in a different and positively impactful way. Have a wonderful celebration.
