I know more than one of the shop owners in computer village, and they all said they were notified not only of the need to pay taxes amongst other things, but also the imminent action that the state government would take should the not comply. In typical Naija fashion they did not heed the notices (as in more than one). The government has now been good on it's word and implemented the sanctions as stipulated in the notices. What is foul and unfair about that? Anyone that is complaining that Lagosians should not pay taxes because the state does not provide infrastructure? ![]() WTH?? where should the money for the infrastructure come from if people do not heed laws, government notices or pay taxes? Baba God go provide? People are saying the govt needs to improve the trading conditions in the market before implementing tax laws? HUH ![]() Are u for real? Improve the infrastructure and trading conditions with what money if the traders themselves refuse to pay tax, refuse to register their businesses etc? Common sense says if you want to set up a business in any place you should know the do's and don't's of doing that. Do the businesses not have lease agreements with the owners of the village? Are they not conversant with the conditions of trading there? Do they not have bank accounts? Are they not conversant with the conditions of operating in the banking environment? So why do they now want to claim ignorance about the legal business framework in Lagos? It is THEIR RESPONSIBILITY to find out what they need to do to be compliant with the laws of the state. We all know that they know that the laws exist, much airtime etc has been used by the government informing them about the existence of the laws. The law says pay your tax!!! Why did they not bother to find out how these laws would affect them and their businesses? They are to blame for the situation they find themselves in now. If Nigeria is to improve from the sorry state she is in now, the rule of law needs to start being implemented Fashola and his govt are spot on as far as I am concerned. |

@ stancozy stancozy: What is that supposed to be? Openly admitting that you know the man personally and have had contact with him since Tolu posted this on the board but have not seen fit to expose him. Telling us he has spun you some story, and that you now believe him and we should by dint of your "good virtue" take you at your word that his story is true? Na today you "hurridly" went to the site where he is to get story? That's just what it is, story, and until you come out and tell what you know, I still stand by my "accessory after the fact". If you did not want to be tarred with the same Poo.t.y. brush as your friend Lance, you should have just kept quiet from the begining |

The terrible state of Nigerian universities can be traced to the ignorance of previous leaders who misappropriated the revenue allocations meant for the sustainable development of higher institutions in Nigeria and neglected the welfare of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the students. Nigerian universities have been relegated to the bottom of the accredited universities in the world. No Nigerian university is even rated among the best 1, 000 universities in the world and only one Nigerian university ranked among the top 50 universities in Africa at the 44th position. Nigerian administrators neglected Nigerian universities, sent their children to the best colleges and universities in America and the UK, and then misappropriated revenue allocations to establish their own private universities. But none of their private universities even made the list of the best universities in the world in the latest global rankings. One of the best private universities in Nigeria, the Christian Covenant University is at the bottom of the rungs in Africa at the 98th Position, Establishing private colleges and universities is not the solution to the falling standards of education in Nigeria, but making sure that the public colleges and universities are well equipped with the basic facilities and utilities, such as modern classes, laboratories, hostels with clean toilets and qualified academic staff. Most of the teachers and lecturers in Nigerian secondary schools, colleges and universities are not certified teachers. Having a degree is not enough qualification to teach. The teachers must be certified like the graduates of accountancy who must be certifed by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) before they can become competent professional accountants. When the academic faculty is already faulty, then the quality of education will not be up to the required global standards. Poor teachers will produce poor students. Before anyone can teach, you must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. You must have completed teacher training through an approved program and you must have successfully completed the appropriate teacher certification tests for the subject and grade level you wish to teach Investigations have shown that many of the teachers in Nigeria cheated to pass their exams and dubbed projects to earn their diplomas and degrees. When they fail to get the dream jobs in banks or oil companies, they turn to the private schools, colleges and universities springing up daily and they are often employed by these insitutions that are in desperate need for tutors to teach the thousands of boys and girls already given admission. These private institutions have already charged exorbitant school fees in thousands of naira like the so called elitist schools charging over a million naira per session for a single pupil in Nigeria! The private schools are all over the place, competing with the churches for every available space in the towns and cities in Nigeria. To know how phony they are, you can hardly find them in the rural areas where education is needed most. They are all after the money. Opening private schools and churches are the fastest get-rich quick schemes in Nigeria today. https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-195700.0.html#msg3112759 posted by Orikinla 14/1/2008. I concur!! |

I think Naija food can be compared more to African American Soul food than regular American (burgers and fries) type food. Naija food, like African American soul food generally tends to be more intensely spiced than European American cuisine and Naija food like soul food uses techniques like frying meat and using all parts of the animal for consumption. If you have eaten Cajun food, then most Naija Soups are closest to Cajun Gumbo (sp). It consists primarily of stock, meat and/or fish and shellfish, a thickener, and the vegetable. The closest thing I can think of to our flavoured rices (jollof et al) are Jambalaya(sp) rice cooked with tomato, spices, herbs stock and meats/ fish (Sort of a one pot deal) don't know if this helps?
