http://www.newsdaily.com/stories/tre53m5og-us-spider-silk/

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LONDON, Apr. 23, 2009 (Reuters) — Spider silk is already tougher and lighter than steel, and now scientists have made it three times stronger by adding small amounts of metal

"It could make very strong thread for surgical operations," researcher Seung-Mo Lee of the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics in Halle, Germany, said in a telephone interview.

Lee and colleagues, who published their findings in the journal Science, found that adding zinc, titanium or aluminum to a length of spider silk made it more resistant to breaking or deforming.

They used a process called atomic layer deposition, which not only coated spider dragline silks with metal but also caused some metal ions to penetrate the fibers and react with their protein structure.

Lee said he next wanted to try adding other materials, including artificial polymers like Teflon.

The idea was inspired by studies showing traces of metals in the toughest parts of some insect body parts. The jaws of leaf-cutter ants and locusts, for example, both contain high levels of zinc, making them particularly stiff and hard.

Spider silk has long fascinated scientists but producing it in commercial quantities is difficult because spiders kept in captivity tend to eat each other.

As a result, researchers have looked at alternative ways of producing silk without spiders, by duplicating their spinning technique.

Approaches being tried include deriving fiber from the milk of transgenic goats with an extra spider-silk gene and adapting silk produced by other insects, such as silkworms.

Are you familar with the kyoto protocol, This article involves Nigeria and i have highlighted where necessary

ScienceDaily (Apr. 23, 2009) — Initiatives aimed at cutting emissions while encouraging economic development are failing the world’s poorest countries, leading scientists from Oxford University are warning

They say that payments from rich countries to fund development schemes in poor nations are unequally distributed because investors choose stronger, more stable states like China, India and Brazil instead of much poorer nations such as Chad, Nigeria and Sudan.

In their new paper published in the first issue of the journal Climate and Development, Dr Chuks Okereke and Dr Heike Schroeder analyse the links between carbon cuts, economic development and justice for developing countries.

The paper assesses the existing initiatives for greenhouse gas reductions, such as the ‘Clean Development Mechanism’ (CDM). The CDM is part of the Kyoto climate change treaty and allows industrialised nations with emissions reduction commitments to invest in projects that reduce emissions in developing countries as an alternative to their own countries. These certified emission reduction (CER) credits, are traded and sold, and used by industrialised countries to a meet a part of their emission reduction targets.

The paper calls into question the effectiveness of these initiatives and is calling for a ‘climate justice development’ fund to be established to pay for climate change adaptation and low carbon development in poor countries, and provide insurance for investors. The scientists add that the post-Kyoto climate change agreement should be more closely tied to world trade and other international treaties.

Dr Okereke, from the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, said: ‘The current system isn’t working because it lumps too many countries together and ignores the socio-economic gulfs between them. Measures that were intended for all developing countries have ended up helping only a few. Investors only invest where they know they’ll get a return and in many cases, rich governments and private investors have been put off by political turbulence in the countries that most need help.

‘This new fund would help solve that problem. It would target the poorest and most vulnerable nations and provide insurance against political turbulence and misuse. The post-Kyoto treaty must emphasise low carbon development without neglecting adaptation; at the moment, the reverse is the case,' said Dr Schroeder, from the Environmental Change Institute.

‘Developed countries have failed the developing world on climate change. We are now looking to key developing countries like China, Mexico and Brazil to demonstrate leadership on this important issue. And they are

Romance / Children Take A Toll On Marital Bliss (research Study) by amebo22: 5:14am On Apr 25, 2009
Children Take A Toll On Marital Bliss
ScienceDaily (Apr. 8, 2009) — What married couples have suspected for years is now proven by researchers at the University of Denver (DU) and Texas A&M – children can add problems and stress to a marriage. According to an eight-year study of 218 couples, ninety percent of the couples experienced a decrease in marital satisfaction once the first child was born.

"Couples who do not have children also show diminished marital quality over time," says Scott Stanley, research professor of psychology at DU. "However, having a baby accelerates the deterioration, especially seen during periods of adjustment right after the birth of a child."

The research recently appeared in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and was funded by a grant to the University of Denver from the National Institutes of Health. The paper was authored by Brian Doss, assistant professor of psychology at Texas A&M along with the team of researchers from the University of Denver, including, psychology professor Howard Markman, senior researcher Galena Rhoades and Stanley.

The research also showed couples who lived together before marriage experienced more problems after birth than those who lived separately before marriage, as did those whose parents fought or divorced.

However, some couples said their relationships were stronger post-birth. Couples who had been married longer, or who had higher incomes, seemed to have fewer marital problems related to having a baby than those with lower incomes or who had been married for a shorter period of time.

Stanley cautions against concluding that children damage overall happiness in life. "There are different types of happiness in life and that while some luster may be off marital happiness for at least a time during this period of life, there is a whole dimension of family happiness and contentment based on the family that couples are building. This type of happiness can be powerful and positive but it has not been the focus of research," Stanley says

ScienceDaily (Apr. 23, 2009) — Will problems associated with environmental issues improve in the next two decades? According to an analysis of student performance on PISA 2006--an international assessment of 15-year-olds--students who are the best informed about environmental science and the geosciences are also the most realistic about the environmental challenges facing the world in the next 20 years. Meanwhile, students who are least informed in these areas are the most wildly optimistic that things will improve.

Blue Jean Insulation
Environmental Engineers Replace Chemical-Laden Building Insulation with Recycled Denim
May 1, 2006 — A medical center is insulating its walls with recycled blue jeans instead of fiberglass. The new construction material is more environmentally friendly, as fiberglass contains formaldehyde, which is believed to cause asthma and allergies. The use of denim is just one of several "green" materials used at the medical center.

Jokes Etc / Re: Businessmen In A Limo by amebo22: 4:45pm On Apr 24, 2009
Am not sure if yall have read this before;;;;;

Two 90-year-old women, Rose and Barb, had been friends all of their
lives.

When it was clear that Rose was dying, Barb visited her every day.
One day Barb said, 'Rose, we both loved playing women's softball all our
lives, and we played all through High School. Please do me one favor:
when
you get to Heaven, somehow you must let me know if there's women's
soft-ball there, '

Rose looked up at Barb from her death bed and said, 'Barb, you've been my
best friend for many years. If it's at all possible, I'll do this favor
for
you.'

Shortly after that, Rose passed on.

At midnight the following Friday, Barb was awakened from a sound sleep by
a
blinding flash o f white light and a voice calling out to her, 'Barb,
Barb.'

'Who is it?' asked Barb, sitting up suddenly. 'Who is it?'

'Barb -- it's me, Rose.'

'You're not Rose. Rose just died.'

'I'm telling you, it's me, Rose,' insisted the voice.

'Rose! Where are you?'

'In Heaven,' replied Rose. 'I have some really good news and a little bad
news.'

'Tell me the good news first,' said Barb.

The good news,' Rose said, 'is that there's Softball in Heaven. Better
yet,
all of our old buddies who died before us are here, too. Better than
that,
we're all young again.

Better still, it's always springtime, and it never rains or snows. And
best
of all, we can play softball all we want, and we never get tired.'

'That's fantastic,' said Barb. 'It's beyond my wildest dreams! So what's
the bad news'

'You're pitching Tuesday.'

At dee brain

i am really not a fan of all this melodramatic journalist either but like i said its an article just focus on the article. Also the bad media or journalist rem its a job and they have to feed as well am not excusing them but we need to cut them some slack, have you heard the saying ( there is no news like bad news), lol
i love reading news online and compare sources eg there was an article bout the same church on Nigeria world .com but the journalist edited it and did not mention names but huhu online did mention names and locations. No body was able to detect that it was the same story but one was incomplete.
that is why i keep saying that focus on the article not on the target.Even if any pastor was painted a saint or artiste painted the opposite it does not really matter life still goes on, That is the attitude NL needs to learn, its a difficult habit to cultivate but we will get there soon.

Just becos sometin is in the news does not mean its true, all we need to do read it and pass a comment not to judge or attack the posters, Tks for your response and for taking time to verify, just like i always do ( Trust but verify)

thanks for you interest honeyeadoe,
we just have to start one step at a time, we need to know if NL would be interested and the forum would be used to share concerns, knowlege conservation etc of the Natural resources we thought would foreva remain. Also experts on other areas of the Environment would be called in. I chose water since its becoming a source of concern to water specialists.
it will be taken seriously although with some fun facts as well so that we have NL of varying interest and input n not bore everyone. So that it would not be for professionals alone but target is the NL community at large.
Nairaland / General / Environmental Issues by amebo22: 5:46pm On Apr 23, 2009
NLs I have keen interest in the environment and not noticed a thread about it. Its either we are not aware of the environmental issues or just shying away from it. I would like a vote on if a thread or section be devoted to this issue of course it would have to be with Seun's approval.
it would consist of News, articles and issues and environmental jokes with Emphasis on Water as that is my specialty. most probably news on the Go Green project, recycling and all and keep NL informed
i have posted some article but no one seem to respond so please vote is this something NL would like or this like. Feel free  to air you opinions.

Honest thoughts at this point is welcomed. Thanks for your time

Green" fabric from chicken feathers
(00:56) Rough Cut
Apr. 22 - Australian scientists are trying to change the face of fashion by turning animal waste into wearable fabric.

They believe that chicken feathers can be turned into a biodegradable fiber from which new fabrics could be developed.

The sustainable fiber would not compete with natural fibers like wool, but rather replace synthetic fibers such as nylon.
