The President of the Students’ Union Government of the Plateau State University, Mr Ezekiel Luka, on Tuesday, confirmed that the school was attacked by gunmen.

The SUG president said one of the institution’s female students was raped and valuables including money and phones were carted away by the gunmen.

“What happened was that there was a rehearsal for a play production by some 200 level and 400 level students of the Theatre Arts Department at the Open Air Theatre.

“While the rehearsal was going on, the gunmen stormed the place around 10 pm on Monday and attacked the students. In the process, one female student was raped while others sustained injury, he told Punch.

“Several others had their belongings including phones and money forcefully taken away before the gunmen escaped.

“This is not the first time students would be attacked in the university by gunmen and there is the need for those concerned to secure the lives of students to avoid further occurrence”

The SUG President stated that the raped victim had been rushed to the hospital for medical attention, adding that the matter had been reported to the school authorities.

The university is located in Bokkos Local Government Area of the state.

Politics / Army Cleans Up Gutters And Drainages In Ojuelegba by amebogistng(m): 4:05pm On Dec 16, 2019
Nigerian Army personnel on Saturday stormed the Ojuelegba area of Lagos and launched a cleanup exercise of the area to mark the 2019 conference of the Nigerian Army Ordinance Corps (NAOC).

The no fewer than 300 officers and men of the Corp, led by the Commander Maj-Gen Omotomilola Akintade, cleaned up gutters, drainages and swept the street of Ojuelegba and adjourning areas as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

The soldiers opened up blocked drainages and got out heaps of used cellophane bags and other waste materials from gutters to ensure easy water flow and a clean environment.

General Akintade, who was represented by Brigadier General Toyin Jinadu, described the exercise as part of the activities lined up to commemorate the 2019 Corps Commander Ordinance Annual Conference.

He expressed hope that the exercise would further boost the relationship between them and the civilian populace, considering that the relation between the force in Ojuelegba and the public had been frosty in the past.

“This exercise is part of our corporate social responsibility to help clean the environment and make it better,” he said.

“We have no fewer than 300 personnel, both officers and men, for this exercise and we will ensure that we clean up the nooks and crannies of Ojuelegba.

“The clean-up will not stop at Ojuelegba. It will extend to other areas of Surulere Local Government Area as a whole,” Akintade said.

He advised residents to maintain a clean environment and to support the waste management agencies to effectively keep Lagos metropolis clean.

Traders, food vendors and other residents, who came out for the exercise, expressed gratitude to the Army for its intervention.

Speaking to Sunday Sun, a food vendor who was identified as Mercy Owolabi, said it was surprising to see military personnel clean gutters and sweeping the street, saying “we were shocked at this and since they are doing it without asking us to pay or punishing us over it, then it’s a good development that needs to applauded.”

A bus driver, Ita Joshua, thanked the military for undertaking the clean-up effort, saying as it will go a long way towards improving the relationship between the Army and the people.

Family / It's Dangerous To Be Full Housewives, NGO Tells Women by amebogistng(m): 11:43am On Dec 09, 2019
Mrs. Rachael Adewumi, founder of TAKEM Empowerment Initiatives (TEIs), an NGO, has advised women against remaining full-time housewives.

Adewumi, at an end-of-year party on Sunday in Abuja, urged women to get an employment or learn a trade.

The party was organised by the NGO to support widows with household items.

Adewumi explained that it was no longer news that a lot of women go into depression as a result of the sudden death of their husbands, who were the bread winners of the family.

“Such narrative must change; women should be allowed to work to support their husbands so that they won’t be a burden to anyone when their husbands are not there.

“A lot of them with nothing to fall back on, end up dying as well, leaving the children to suffer in the hands of the society or relatives.

“Some even go into prostitution and are exposed to diseases. It is necessary for us to advise women not to rely solely on their husbands, ” she said.

According to her, the NGO has empowered 500 Abuja rural women to improve and sustain their livelihoods through different support programmes.

She added that women ready to learn had been supported through scholarships and payment of school fees across the three levels of education in the country. She said that youths and widows had benefited from conventional training and starter packs with which to start up businesses.

Politics / I'm In Extreme Anguish Of Spirit - Atiku Reacts To DSS Court Invasion by amebogistng(m): 11:43pm On Dec 06, 2019
Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the February 2019 general election, Atiku Abubakar, on Friday said he experienced “extreme anguish of spirit” while watching the invasion of the Federal High Court, Abuja, by operatives of the Department of State Service.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu was presiding over the court proceedings involving presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the February 2019 general election, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, when DSS made unceremonious entry and attempted to forcefully remove the activist.

Operatives of DSS had held Sowore for 125 days in what had been described as illegal detention, following his arrest last August on allegation of attempting to forcefully sack the government via his scheduled nationwide #RevolutionNow protests.

Sowore was freed on Thursday evening, but during a court appearance on Friday (today), DSS operatives disrupted court sitting as they attempted to rearrest him.

Taking to his verified Twitter handle @atiku on Friday, Atiku, in a series of tweets, condemned the court invasion, comparing the Nigerian situation to dictatorship.

Below is what he tweeted:

“Today, I am in extreme anguish of spirit having watched the unfortunate drama that played itself out at the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, in which agents of the state caused a commotion in court in order to frustrate a judgment of a court of competent authority.

“Never in the history of Nigerian democracy has a judge been treated in such a disdainful and brazen attack on not just her person and office, but on the entire judiciary. This is unacceptable. It is a rape on the sanctity of the court.

“Nigeria is not a dictatorship. We are a democracy, no matter how inconvenient this fact is to the powers that have forced themselves on us.

“I call for an immediate inquiry to be set up to identify those responsible for the maltreatment meted out to Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu and the desecration of her court, and indeed the Nigerian judiciary. They must be sanctioned to the highest extent permissible by our laws.

“I further call for all law enforcement agencies in Nigeria to immediately respect not just the court order made by Justice Ojukwu, but the order of any court in Nigeria, on any detainee, be it Omoyele Sowore, Sambo Dasuki or Ibrahim Zakzaky, among others.

“We cannot have a situation where our government is quick to obey foreign court orders and even quicker to disobey domestic court orders. This is symptomatic of a mindset that is servile to foreign powers and brutal to Nigerians.

“Without the rule of law, there can be no rule at all. Power in Nigeria still flows from the people, not from the barrel of a gun. I call on all men and women of goodwill not to keep quiet or sit on the fence at times like this.

“To keep Nigeria a democracy is the paramount duty of all concerned stakeholders. Please speak up against this tyranny and side with the Nigerian people.”

The Governing Council of Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, has approved the dismissal of a lecturer in the Department of Accountancy, for allegedly sexually harassing a female student.

The lecturer was in June, allegedly involved in a sex scandal with a female student of the department as shown in a video which went viral on the social media. The video had shown the lecturer being molested by some individuals for allegedly harassing a female student.

Consequently, the university queried and set up a probe panel on the matter.

A statement by the Head, EKSU Directorate of Information, Bode Olofinmuagun, on Friday stated, “The University Governing Council, at its 135th meeting held on 5th December, 2019 approved the recommendations of the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee (Academic) that recommended his dismissal.”

Olofinmuagun said that EKSU instituted a preliminary investigation panel which forwarded its findings to the University Management, adding, “The findings were later considered by the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee. The Committee considered the overwhelming evidence against him and invited him to clear himself.

“He, however, admitted to the allegations and confirmed the authenticity of the report of the preliminary panels before which he appeared,” Olofinmuagun stated.

The EKSU spokesperson added that the Governing Council also approved the dismissal of two lecturers for allegedly abandoning their duty posts.

He stated that EKSU “would not condone any act of misconduct and that the University would continue to flush out bad eggs in the system.”

Crime / Two Killers Of LASTMA Officer Charged With Murder by amebogistng(m): 3:08pm On Dec 03, 2019
Two suspects alleged to have killed a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officer in Apapa on Saturday were arraigned at a Magistrates’ court today.

The suspects, Abdullahi Akere, 31, and Nurudeen Ogungbe, 41, were arraigned before the court sitting in Yaba, on a two-count charge of attack and murder of a law enforcement officer, Premium Times reported.

The counts read: “That abdullahi Akere, Nurudeen Ogungbe and others now, at large, on 29th day of November, 2019, at about 1800hrs at Ijora-Badia, Lagos State in the Lagos Magistrate District, did conspire among yourself to commit felony to wit: murder; an offence punishable under section 233 of the criminal law of Lagos State.

“That Abdullahi Akere, Nurudeen Ogungbe and others now at large, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magistrate district, did kill one Ola Oyeshina, age – 40 years, by hitting him with stone on his head and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 222 and punishable under section 223 of the criminal law of Lagos State.”

Prosecutor, Adegoke, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, read the charge to the two accused. They pleaded not guilty.

The presiding magistrate, Mrs. Ayeye ordered the remand of both suspects in custody as she adjourned the matter till 28th of January, 2020.

Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, while visiting the family of the slain LASTMA officer, vowed tough action against people attacking law enforcement officers.

“In the last 48 hours, we have had heavy brutality on men of LASTMA who were doing their work. We have had people whose legs were amputated in the last 48 hours while on the assignment that was given to them to bring about enforcement of our laws and order.

“I think this is the level at which we need to make this very stern warning that we will not stop at ensuring that we implement and enforce our laws, not minding which force is involved.

“We cannot be condoning reckless killing and sending our young men to early grave. This government certainly will not stand for that.”
