This must either be Mikel or a family member typing this How is Mikel popular? where? The most popular housemates right now are Damola, Chidinma, Esitima and maybe Osas. This is clear from engagements and their social media growth. Who even remembers Mikel?? lol Fweshest3: 2 Likes |

A bit of a background. I travelled to the US for the first time early last year on a tourist visa. I was on leave, had a few cash to spare and just decided to take a chance. There was a safety conference holding in Houston at that time and so I decided to attend that while visiting. Applied, went for my interview at the Lagos Embassy and was approved. Wasn't asked for any documents. After that visit I was bent on studying abroad, the experience opened my eye to a good opportunity for a better life. I did my research, applied to an average school and got admission. An excoursemate of mine did his interview in Abuja and was approved. He advised that Abuja was not as crowdy as Lagos and said I had a better chance there. I carried my big head and went to Abuja in March for my interview. Heres my transcript; VO: Your passport pls (no greeting) *passed my passport and I-20 but was getting nervous from his hostile countenance* VO: What are you travelling for? Me: I'm travelling for a Masters in Project Management at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology VO: Why Harrisburg? Me:The MS Project Management at Harrisburg University allows students to choose concentration in areas that are at the forefront of best practices in the world of project management. I am particularly interested in the Agile Lean concentration and how I can apply it in light of the sweeping changes in the energy industry as a result of the new Petroleum Industry Bill. VO: How many schools did you apply to? Me: 3. HU, SIT and MU VO: How many offered you admission Me: I have admission from both HU and SIT but I am yet to get a response from MU. Since I have what I need in HU I went ahead with my visa application for HU. VO: What stood out about HU, why did you choose it over MU? Me:Besides its experienced faculty, the Masters in Project Management at Harrisburg University allows me to complete the PMP certification course and the CAPM. Additionally, it is tailored towards students who are seeking career advancement in the field of project management. *he keeps typing for a while and I'm just staring awkwardly thinking "ask me questions now". Then he goes VO:Aren't you concerned that HU is loosing accreditation? *This totally threw me off balance because to my knowledge the school was fully accredited and that further increased my nervousness. Me: Ermmm, No VO: How did you carry out your research? Me: I made use of internet search engines, linkedIn and the PMI website VO : Sorry, you do not meet the requirements for visa approval..... blah blah blah *Honestly Abuja was a demoralizing experience. All that cash spent on Hotel, flight and co. The VOs only gave one person the white slip that I was aware of, they were soo cold with an aura of superiority. I felt like such an idiot. Fastforward to Last month. I was advised to choose another school by friends and even nairalanders but honestly they were either too expensive or just too 'bleh' for my liking. I contacted the school, they assured me that they were fully accredited and even sent their accreditation documents and licenses to me. I took all these and booked myself another interview. Even though my dad was my sponsor I couldn't get him to give me his bank statement for either interviews (polygamous family wahala). Most of the transcripts I was seeing had people showing their sponsors bank statements, so I was scared. Went along with my own personal bank statement which had a closing balance of 3million naira. I wasn't even sure what I planned to do with it because I had filled out my dad as my sponsor in the DS160 form. I just decided to dress really well sha cause I remembered during my B1/B2 interview the VO complimented my shirt. I also know I feel more confident when I look good. That turned out to be a mess too because my shoes were too high, legs were aching me, all that standing and queuing, had to hold my shoes in my hand and walk barefoot while inside. People on the queue were smiling at me like "Aunty, wear your shoe now". As soon as i was called to the window I put my shoes on and went there, leaned towards the VO for balance. VO: Good morning, how are you doing? Me: I'm great, thank you. VO:Your passport and i20 pls *passed them VO:What are you travelling for? Me: Im travelling for a masters in Project Management at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology with a focus on Agile Lean Concentration. VO:Whats your highest educational qualification? Me: I have a BSc in Real Estate Management from the University of Lagos. VO: How does your degree relate to project management Me: REM is a very broad course with diverse career opportunities like portfolio management, agency, property valuation, property management, development and of course project management. During my undergraduate program I took courses such as... VO:*cuts me off* What have you been doing since graduation? Me: After Graduation I went for the compulsory NYSC program, then I worked at XYZ & Co estate surveyors for a year after which I joined my current company- ABC oil servicing Company. I have been with them for 4 years and have served in 2 position. Firstly a Procurement officer and now an assistant Procurement Manager. VO: Have you travelled out of the country before? Me: Yes, I travelled early last year as a representative of my company at the XYZ Safety Conference VO: Did you write any qualification exam? Me: I wrote the TOEFL exam and had a score of 116/120 VO: Nice, who will be sponsoring you? Me: My dad VO: What does he do? Me: He is a structural engineer and a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers. He owns his engineering company and invests in real estate. VO: Your visa has been approved. Pick up your passport at......... *picked my shoe up and left happily* Sorry for the long story, Im in a new country, don't have friends here so I'm kind of bored, LOL 25 Likes 1 Share |
