Culture / Emotan Untold Story by antiquity(m): 2:55pm On Feb 19, 2015
Emotan was a patriotic woman who traded in foodstuffs at the very spot where her statue stands in the 15th century. At that period,{11th} Oba Uwaifiokun {1430AD-1440AD} usurped the throne of the Benin kingdom in place of his senior brother, Prince Ogun who was the heir apparent. Ogun in those times of travail paid secret and nocturnal visits to Benin from his exile.

On many occasions, this market woman called Emotan warmed Ogun of impending dangers and advised him against interacting with some treacherous chiefs who may reveal his presence. On one occasion Emotan actually hide prince ogun from his adversary.

Emotan was a market woman who took care of little children whilst their mothers were away buying and selling their wares in oba market they refer to her as the market woman who began the first "DAY-CARE CENTRE" in Benin City.

When Prince Ogun eventually regained the throne and was subsequently crowned as the real Oba of Benin, he took the name {12th} Oba Ewuare the great {1440AD-1473AD}. He did not forget the pivotal role played by this simple market woman, Emotan who saved him from glaring dangers during his exile years.

When Emotan died, Oba Ewuare ordered that the sacred Uruhe tree be planted at the very spot where Emotan used to display her goods in Oba market and decreed that thereafter, every person in Benin who is performing any ceremony of whatever must pay homage to Emotan. Thus to this day every citizen, including the Oba himself pays homage to Emotan.

During the reign of {33rd} Oba Osemwende {1816AD-1848AD} the commemorative tree fell and he replanted another Uruhe tree on the same spot.

In 1951, the British colonial administration officials injected the tree with poisonous chemicals and uprooted it. This action almost led to a violent mass reaction. After which the {37th} Oba Akenzua II {1933AD-1978AD} vehemently protested the destruction of the Emotan shrine. This had been there since the 15th century.
Consequently, the colonialists acceded to the request for a replacement.

A life-size statue was cast by Mr. J.A.Danfor in London from a clay Marquette modeled by Enomayo, professional brass caster from the Igun-Eronmwon. The new Emotan statue was unveiled a midst pomp and pageantry by the Oba Benin, Akenzua ll on March 20, 1954.

My friend who is from a royal family has an ancient statue that was passed to him by his parent which was also passed to them by their grand parents and great grand parents and so on...... It is a family legacy that is been passed in their family from one generation to the other

The trouble started when my friend no longer wanted to keep their family statue because according to him, the statue looks fetish, ancient and outdated. So he decided to dispose it by throwing it inside the river but something terrible happened

My friend girlfriend called my line and i explained that something terrible has happened to my friend that I should come quickly to the river. I drove down to my Ifa priest house, took him and along side his bag of charms and medicines

It became very scary when we got to the river, my friend could not recognize me, he was paralyzed. He could not talk or move. His girlfriend narrated her ordeal, she told us that "as her boyfriend was about throwing the statue inside the water, she heard a loud slap. The statue fell from him to the ground, he fell separately on the ground and when she started calling his name, he could not talk or move."

The Ifa priest consulted his oracle and told us that the statue was a deity and that the diety was angry with my friend for trying to dispose it that we should get some spiritual items to appease the angry deity or else my friend will die within 24 hours.

Women sha... una too dey emotional. Lol, una nor get mind at all. Look at the way my friend girlfriend started crying uncontrollably like a big baby when she heard her guy had only 24 hours to live.

To cut the long story short, we bought those items and my friend was revived within 24 hours.

Now what should we do with such a statue (deity)?

According to the Ifa priest, he said "Elaho the statue (deity) was created in the royal palace of the Oba of Benin by 7 powerful Ifa priests and Orisha priests in 1440 AD. Elaho material is bronze and copper. Elaho weigh 5kg, Elaho height is 12cm

Should we sell Elaho or keep Elaho?

If we should sell Elaho, what price should we put on Elaho?

If we should keep Elaho, what use is Elaho to us?

Your answers and contributions are well appreciated
