Sarah Obama, the grandmother of former US President Barack Obama, has died aged 99 in western Kenya, her daughter told AFP Monday.



“It is true she has gone to be with the Lord, she passed on this morning,” said an emotional Marsat Onyango, her daughter.



Sarah Obama, popularly known as Mama Sarah, had been admitted to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu. Family spokesman Sheikh Musa Ismail said she had been unwell for a week, but had tested negative for Covid-19. Ismail said the former president had “sent his condolences.”



Once a simple country woman, Sarah Obama was for a long time best known for the hot porridge and doughnuts she served at a local school. But she rose to world fame with the 2008 election of her step-grandson Barack as the first black US president.



Already a national celebrity after the former Illinois senator Barack Obama visited Kenya in 2006, Sarah’s modest homestead became a tourist attraction with Obama’s November 2008 election triumph.



Born in 1922 in a village on the shores of Lake Victoria, Sarah was the third wife of Hussein Onyango Obama, President Obama’s grandfather, a herbalist and a village elder who fought for the British in Burma, now called Myanmar. Onyango Obama, who died in 1975, is said to be the first man to swap goatskin clothing for trousers in his village. He returned from the war in Burma with a gramophone and a picture of a white woman he claimed to have married.



‘Strong, virtuous’ –



Although not a blood relation, President Obama often refered to Sarah as his grandmother, calling her “granny”. On his trip back to Kenya as US president, he met with her among other family members in Nairobi. After leaving office, he travelled to her home in the village of Kogelo in 2018, joking he had been unable to do so in 2015 as his jet was too big to land in Kisumu. Obama is linked to his Kenyan family via his father Barack senior, a pipe-smoking economist who Obama has admitted he “never truly” knew.



He met Barack Obama’s mother, Ann Dunham, in Hawaii. But he walked out when Obama was just two and died in a car crash in Nairobi in 1982, aged 46. Obama senior had worked in the government of Jomo Kenyatta, who led Kenya at independence from Britain until his death 14 years later in 1978.



The two men did not get on well, with Kenyatta — the father of Kenya’s current president Uhuru Kenyatta — sacking Obama senior, and blackballing him for further government jobs, an ostracisation that would help fuel alcoholism. Kenyatta said Monday the country had “lost a strong, virtuous woman.



A matriarch who held together the Obama family and was an icon of family values.” He said she would be remembered for her philanthropic work, saying she had initiated several community development projects in her village. Mama Sarah will be buried Tuesday at her home, in line with Islamic traditions, said Ismail.

A new tariff plan, which al­lows subscribers to call all networks in the country at 11k per second, has been unveiled by national telecommunica­tions company, Globacom.

The plan, which is another move by the company to give its customers a unique calling experience, is also expected to help cushion the effect of the global pandemic, Covid-19.

According to a Globacom statement in Lagos, subscrib­ers who opt for the plan will be charged an access fee of N7, which will be billed along­side their first call of the day, after which they will be able to make calls to all networks in Nigeria at 11 kobo per sec­ond (exclusive of tax) for the rest of the day.



It stated further that the ac­cess fee of N7 will be waived for any customer who does not make any call but only receives calls throughout the day.

The company said that international calls and SMS rates remain unchanged, adding that customers on the new tariff plan will pay the standard SMS and IDD tariff. It, however, added that cus­tomers can enjoy better inter­national call rate on the Glo network by purchasing any of the IDD packs available.

The husband is the head of the wife. No matter how educated or successful you are, your husband is your head and you must regard him as such at all times. It is a terrible thing for a husband to feel his wife is his head.

Many men are misbehaving in their marriages simply because they want to establish that they are the head of their wives. Also, my wife is my number one fan.

News getting to use shows that Naira Marley was not on the passenger manifest given to Executive Jet Services for the airlift of controversial musician Naira Marley to Abuja for his last weekend's concert.

Investigation showed that the name on the manifest reads that of then minister or works babatunde fashola and not Azeez Fashola which is the real name of Naira Marley.

Naira Marley's name is Azeez Fashola, but how Babatunde was added to it was still unknown.

However, apart from Naira Marley,the manifest also included nine other names; Adewunmi Segun, Chinonso Opara, Fashola Adeshina and Adeyeye Tobi.

Others were Michael Opeyemi, Idowu Emmanuel, Seyi Awonuga, Wisdom Intoto and Abayomi Akin.

It was gathered that the jet company received an approval from Sen. Hadi Sirika to operate an essential service to airlift Justice Adefope Okoji to Abuja from Lagos.

Inside source told our correspondent that the Justice was contacted on Saturday for the Sunday flight, but told the charter company that he was already in Abuja.

However, while the airline could not airlift the justice as planned, it was allegedly informed that there was another flight and its Chairman demanded for the manifest of the flight.

According to our sources, there was no indication from the names in the manifest that Naira Marley was part of the flight; it was assumed that the Minister of Works and Housing was actually the person that was travelling.

Besides, the company in an apology letter to Sirika, said that it was a case of mistaken identity.

In the letter to the Minister, signed by Dr. Sam Iwuajoku, the Chairman, Executive Jet Services explained that, “So on Saturday morning, 13th June, 2020 my staff called and told me that they have a charter flight to Abuja and that the passengers were already at the lounge. As a rule, passenger manifest is always sent to me before any departure.

''When I went through the manifest and I saw Fashola Babatunde, I thought it was the Hon. Minister of Works going to Abuja with his men, so we decided to do the flight, since he is serving Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Sirika had on Monday at the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 in Abuja said that the company would be shut heavily while financial sanction in accordance to the offence would be imposed on it.
