I don't really like beating my kids, my wife does the beating while I do the verbal correction. I slapped my 2 years old boy one particular day and till today I still regrets doing so. what was his offence? While playing he inserted a stone into his ear and willingly he came to me shouting my Daddy and touching his ear. I looked into his ear and saw the stone. with the help of God I was able to remove the stone successfully and thereafter slapped and shouted on him. He cried!!! After slapping him I then realised when next he did such a thing he might be afraid of telling anybody to avoid beating. I hope he will forget that particular incident. 1 Like 1 Share |

I have the same issue, but I do manage the situation by sitting close to the window if am travelling, ensure I eat to satisfaction before embarking on the journey, avoid routes where there's excess traffic, avoid reading or pressing of phone.. The situation is very much manageable. 1 Like |

Reports say that the father told newsmen that, his daughter of Five years began to complain of excruciating pains in her groin which they didn’t pay commensurate attention to. After a while, they noticed that her breasts were developing, all of which they attributed to early adolescence precocity. Their fears was confirmed after tests were carried out on her when they noticed her protuberant tummy. They pregnancy test came back with a positive verdict. According to reports, the locals and family of the girl are still in a state of shock, considering the girl’s age and biological placing. With just ten days to go for the fiery clash
between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Desert
Foxes of Algeria, Carl Ikeme, Eagles safest hands
has been ruled out.
Ikeme who suffered a hip injury while on club
duty with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the
English Championship against Blackburn Rovers,
wrote to the Nigeria Football Federation on
Tuesday that he will not recover in time for the
Algeria game.
Carl Ikeme
The extent of the injury which forced Ikeme to
be taken off at half time was initially sketchy but
it has now been confirmed that he will be in goal
for Nigeria come Nov 12.
In the absence of Ikeme, Rohr is left with the
options of FC IfeanyiUbah’s Ikechukwu Ezenwa
and Portugal based Dele Alampasu.
However, Rohr still could still extend a
replacement invitation to either of South Africa
based Daniel Akpeyi or Emmanuel Daniel of
Enugu Rangers who had an impressive outing at
the just concluded Rio Olympics.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been given a one-match touchline ban for being sent off against Burnley. The Portuguese was sent to the stands by referee Mark Clattenburg for an incident "in or around the tunnel area during half-time" of the goalless draw. The Football Association also fined him £8,000 and he will serve the ban for the game against Swansea on Sunday. In a separate offence, Mourinho has been fined £50,000 for comments he made about referee Anthony Taylor. The United boss said it would be "difficult" for Taylor to officiate their game with Liverpool prior to the match at Anfield on 17 October. Managers are not supposed to speak about referees prior to matches, but Mourinho added that appointing Taylor for the Liverpool match had put "pressure" on the Manchester-based official. An FA statement said Mourinho accepted that the comments "constituted improper conduct, but denied they brought the game into disrepute". However, an independent regulatory commission "found the disrepute element of the charge proven and as well as being fined, Mourinho was warned as to his future conduct". Mourinho "admitted using abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official and accepted the standard penalty", following the incident against Burnley on 29 October, Mourinho appeared to be upset when United were not awarded a penalty during Saturday's match, after Jon Flanagan challenged Matteo Darmian inside the Burnley box. The 53-year-old emerged for the second half during the match but was escorted to a seat in the stands before being moved a second time, this time to the directors' box. He declined to speak to the media after the match. Last season when he was in charge of Chelsea, Mourinho was given a one-match stadium ban and fined £40,000 in November 2015 after he was sent to the stands after going to speak to referee Jon Moss in his room at half-time. He was also fined £50,000 for saying that referees were afraid to award penalties against his side after the Blues were beaten 3-1 by Southampton in October 2015. There were strong indications over the
weekend that the police might arrest the
Deputy Senate President, Senator lke
Ekweremadu, and some former principal
officers of the 7th Senate this week.
The senators might be arrested for
snubbing a police invitation to answer
questions on their roles in the alleged
forgery of the rules of the Senate in 2015.
SUNDAY PUNCH reliably gathered on
Saturday that the Force Criminal
Intelligence and Investigations Department,
Garki Abuja, which is investigating the
alleged forgery, was waiting for the
Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon
Arase, to approve the arrest of the
principal officers.
A reliable source at the Force
Headquarters confided in one of our
correspondents that some senior police
officers would meet over the issue at the
beginning of the week. After the meeting,
the investigation department would be
asked to arrest the affected principal
officers before the end of the week.
In July 2015, the police had invited some
principal officers of the Senate over the
alleged forgery of rules used for the
election of Saraki, his deputy and the
inauguration of the 8th Senate.
The police, in another letter dated June 7,
2016 and signed by Assistant Inspector
General of Police, James Caulcrick, had
requested the officials of the 7th Senate
to report to the Force Criminal Intelligence
and Investigation Department, Garki, Abuja,
for the purpose of conducting further
investigations on the fraudulent use of the
Senate Standing Order 2015 (as amended)
by the Senate.
In the letter, Caulcrick noted that none of
the officials on the 7th Senate list had
honoured an earlier invitation to respond to
the allegations against them, except the
Clerk of the National Assembly and that of
the Senate.
Sunday PUNCH gathered that the planned
arrest of the principal officers would be a
prelude to the hearing of the forgery suit
filed against some of them at a Federal
High Court, Abuja.
The source told Sunday PUNCH that the
police leadership had come to the
realisation that they might have to apply
“lawful force to compel obedience and
cooperation” from the suspects.
He stated, “Since the suit has been filed,
we will arrest the men if they fail to
honour our invitation. We are only waiting
for the go-ahead from the IGP. We are
hoping to pick them up this week or before
the hearing of the suit begins.”
Following a directive by the Attorney
General of the Federation and Minister of
Justice, Abubakar Malami, to the IGP the
police had submitted the final report of
their investigation to the Ministry of
Justice for the prosecution of the affected
officers.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Bisi
Kolawole, could not be reached for
comment as she did not respond to calls
to her phone. She had yet to reply an SMS
that was sent to her as of the time of
filing this report
But Kolawole had, a few weeks ago,
confirmed to one of our correspondents
that the police had returned the case file
to the AGF.
“I understand that the case file is in the
AGF’s office that they are to charge the
case to court from their end,” she had said
in an SMS.
We have not received court papers —
Saraki, Ekweremadu
When contacted, aides of the President of
the Senate and his deputy said their
bosses had yet to be served with the
court process on the suit instituted against
them by the Federal Government over the
alleged forgery of the order used for their
inauguration as presiding officers of the
8th Senate.
The Senate President’s Special Adviser on
Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, and
his counterpart in the Deputy Senate
President’s office, Uche Anichukwu, who
spoke in separate telephone interviews
with our correspondent on Saturday, said
their principals read the news in the media,
like other Nigerians.
Olaniyonu, in his reaction, said, “We read
the story just like any other Nigerian. We
have not been served with any court
documents so we don’t have the details.
Whatever action that would be taken would
be after studying the court papers on the
suit.
“We cannot make comments on the issue
at the moment but we are watching
events as they unfold. We read newspaper
reports about police inviting officers of the
7th Senate yesterday for questioning on
the issue and today the story is different.
Our reaction will come later.”
Anichukwu, the media aide to
Ekweremadu, also said, “The deputy
president of the senate read the story in
the newspapers; we are waiting for details
from those who filed the suit before we
can react.”
However, a source in the office of
Ekweremadu told our correspondent in
confidence that some people who were
under pressure from “some powerful
people in the President Muhammadu
Buhari government” were behind the suit.
The source said, “The police told reporters
last year that Ekweremadu was not invited
by the police over the forgery saga.
However, a year after, the police wrote a
letter claiming that Ekweremadu and
others failed to honour their invitation for
investigation since last year.”
In Charge No. CR/219/16 filed by the
office of the Attorney General of
Federation on 10th June, 2016, the
Federal Government of Nigeria
(complainant) slammed a two-count
charge of “criminal conspiracy, contrary to
Section 97 of the Penal Code Law” and
“Forgery contrary to 362 of the Penal Code
Law” against Saraki and Ike Ekweremadu.
Also charged to court were the immediate
past Clerk to the National Assembly,
Abubakar Maikasuwa, and the Deputy Clerk
to the National Assembly, Benedict Efeturi.
Former senate president, Senator David
Mark, and former Majority Leader, Senator
Victor Ndoma-Egba were not charged. |

of Ogun State has been thrown into
mourning after no fewer than 15 residents
were reportedly killed on Friday evening by
armed men suspected to be militants.

Among the 15 killed was a technician,
Waheed Buhari, aka Yah Alau, who was
shot dead in front of his room.
One of his children, Mariam, sustained

Many of the residents, who spoke with our
source SUNDAY PUNCH, begged not to be
identified as the militants had threatened
to return to continue the killing.
A resident told our correspondent the
militants were suspected to be Ijaw youths
involved in pipeline vandalism.
She explained that they were on a revenge
mission as some operatives of the State
Anti-Robbery Squad had killed two of the
vandals earlier on Friday.
She said, “The whole thing began around
4pm on Friday. I was at the backyard of
the hotel, cutting some weed when some
SARS officers came in. They were
shooting and ordering people to stop
moving. There was confusion in the hotel.
“The SARS officials did not leave until after
three hours. They killed two of the vandals
and took away the owner of the hotel, a
woman.
“Around 10pm, I went to urinate when I
saw so many hoodlums coming from the
waterside down the road. They carried
sophisticated weapons and when they got
here, they started shooting. They blew off
the hotel windows and shot people dead.
They killed two men here in Lapete
village.”
A friend of Waheed, the electrician killed in
Oke Muti, said the Ilorin, Kwara State
indigene had tried to shut his door when
the militants killed him.
Waheed’s corpse was still lying in a room
and being prepared for burial when
SUNDAY PUNCH visited.
His friend said, “He was going to urinate
when the militants started firing. He tried
to quickly shut his door, but it did not jam.
They opened fire on him at the door step
and did not stop until he dropped dead.
“Not satisfied, they entered his room and
sprayed everywhere with bullets. Waheed’s
child, Mariam, that was in the room was
hit. She is still at the hospital.”
He added that the police recovered 15
corpses in the community.
The widow of the travel agent killed in the
Ereko area of the community said her
husband, Oladele, who worked on Victoria
Island, Lagos State, had left for work in his
car on Friday morning without any
foreboding.
She said, “He gave me money for
foodstuffs after dropping me off in front of
a bank where I wanted to do a transaction.
By 6pm, we spoke and he asked me to
prepare rice for him that night.
“By 10pm, I called his line; it rang and he
didn’t pick. I tried it again at 12am, still no
response. I called his mother by 6am that I
had not been able to reach him on his two
telephone lines and she promised to call as
well. She also couldn’t get to him.
“It was this morning (Saturday) that I saw
a crowd of people in my house. They said
he was a short distance from home when
he was shot dead. I can’t believe this
because we have barely spent a year in
this community and this has never
happened before.”
Some customers at the Catcher Hotel were
lucky to have escaped with their lives.
However, the hoodlums carted away all
the valuables in the hotel and vandalised
all the electronic gadgets.
A soldier, who was not in uniform at the
time of the attack, said the vandals cut
him with a cutlass and smashed bottles on
his head.
He said, “I had entered the beer parlour in
the hotel when the militants came in. They
were about 200. At first, I thought they
were having a festival until they ordered all
of us to lie flat on the ground.
“They asked for my two phones and when I
gave them one, they became angry. One of
them cut my head with a machete and
followed it with a bottle. I was drenched in
blood. The militants had sophisticated
weapons that I had never seen before.
“They never asked for money from me and
they didn’t search my pocket. If they did,
they could have found my ID card and I
would have been dead. I wore just a white
shirt.”
A disc jockey at the hotel said one of the
militants wanted to shoot him dead, but
one of them persuaded him against it.
“They were arguing among themselves
whether or not to kill me. One said, ‘If you
don’t want me to kill him, then let me cut
off his leg.’ But his colleague asked him
not to. Before I knew it, he had smashed
three bottles on my head.
“They went away with my laptop, phones,
money and everything I had. They refused
to carry away the beers in the hotel. They
took only the hard drinks,” he said.
Women in the hotel, who claimed that the
militants spent about 30 minutes, said they
tortured them with cutlasses and guns.
Efforts to speak with community leaders
were abortive as they declined comment.
It was gathered that a community leader
had been abducted by the militants a few
months ago, after reporting a case against
them at a station.
A source said, “The man was in the creek
for 40 days. The militants collected N10m
from the community before he was
released. That is why everybody is afraid
to talk. People have started fleeing the
community. Two Hausas were killed during
this attack and the Hausa community has
vowed to fight back.”
A man, who spoke for the Imushin
community, pleaded with the government
to intervene before the community was
completely deserted.
He said, “These people are militants and
even the police cannot withstand their
firepower. We need help from the
government. We will appreciate anything
they can do for us.”
The Ogun State Police Public Relations
Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the
attack, but said only three people were
killed.
He said, “Around 11pm at Ereko
Community, Ogijo, some hoodlums
numbering about 100 invaded the
community and started shooting
sporadically. Bullets hit one Waheed Buhari
and his daughter, Mariam. While Buhari
died, the daughter is still at the hospital.
Two other unidentified corpses were found,
making a total of three deaths.
“Information from eyewitnesses showed
that the hoodlums were militants and they
came from the riverine area. But we have
not confirmed this, as investigations are
ongoing. We are particularly interested in
why they came in such a large number.” 1 Like |

Residents, workers and passers-by on Saturday besieged Kara along the Lagos- Ibadan Expressway to view the sudden appearance of plants which grew on a section of the Ogun River. A large number of people stormed the area with their phones and recording devices, while some went as far as walking over the water plants and praying. Though several eyewitnesses described the occurrence as “strange and mysterious,” geological experts told SUNDAY PUNCH that the plants were simply rapidly growing seaweed and that the incident was not extraordinary. Our correspondent, who visited the site on Saturday, observed that a significant expanse of the river had been carpeted by a massive layer of the vegetation. Scores of residents, including children, were walking, playing and praying atop the plant-covered river. Michael Fagbenro, a panel beater with a workshop located at the Kara riverbank, said those in the area began to notice the plants surface at about 8am on Friday. He said, “It started gradually; the plants were flowing with the river. But by 12pm, the water began to flow forcefully and brought a lot more plants. It accumulated at a very rapid rate. “By Friday afternoon, it had completely covered the river. I have been here for over five years and this has never happened. It is obviously not normal. This is unbelievable. When I saw it, I was afraid because it is so strange.” Asked if he had attempted taking a walk on the seaweed, Fagbenro exclaimed frighteningly, “Who, me? I don’t have the courage to walk over it! I am not one of those born here and I cannot swim. I am even sure that when the plants leave, they will take someone with them.” Mrs. Christiana Monday-Egbu, a local trader, similarly said she and other workers at the site were fearful at the occurrence on Friday. The cassava processing business owner, who set up shop by the river over a year ago, said, “It was around 10am when the water started gushing, carrying the plants with the waves. It wasn’t even raining when it started. “People were startled when it started. It all happened so fast. I have never witnessed such a strange occurrence in my life. Everyone rushed out to watch with surprise.” Another Kara-based trader of over three years, Mrs. Love Itoro, said prior to the strange development, canoes plied the river, conveying passengers, mostly traders, from one side to the other. The food vendor explained that at the climax of the incident, a canoe was caught in the middle of the river with five passengers who were meat sellers. “When the plants started coming in large amounts, it blocked the boat and almost made it sink. The driver quickly came down onto the plants to help the passengers carry their meat. People from the other side then threw a rope and pulled the boat back to safety,” Itoro said. Mrs. Ability Udoh, a trader at Kara for five years, said the occurrence was not entirely strange. According to her, occasionally, the river would bring sea-based plants. Udoh, however, admitted that she had never witnessed it in such magnitude. “We are happy that nobody died,” she said. Two other traders, Mercy and Blessing of Calabar extraction, said they were shocked and afraid when the incident occurred. Mercy said, “I too was so scared because I have never seen something like this.” Blessing added, “I saw someone lying down on the plants on Friday; I was so scared. I cannot believe how daring some people are.” In an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH on Saturday, Dr. Folorunsho Adetayo of the Department of Geosciences, University of Lagos, identified the plants as seaweed. According to the environmental geoscientist, seaweed is a regenerative product of algae. Adetayo said, “The plants are not harmful. People can come in contact with them without being harmed. The rainy season definitely contributes to it. I cannot say that it is the first time this is happening. “It could have happened in the past. During certain periods of time, the algae proliferate and are formed around the river course.” He also dismissed claims that the river had dried up, noting that the algae had the ability to reproduce and regenerate itself at a rapid rate within hours. He said, “No, the river cannot just dry up in the rainy season for that matter. It is an experience that is not restricted to Nigeria. At least, personally, I have witnessed it in Qingdao, China, two years ago.” Adetayo however warned, “The government, however, needs to remove the plants because if allowed to stay long, it can become toxic to plants and animals, including human beings.” A Professor of Applied Geophysics, Department of Geosciences, UNILAG, Elijah Ayolabi, in an electronic mail, also explained that the occurrence was not strange. He said, “To the ordinary man, this may be strange, but to those of us who have conducted geophysical investigations and geological mapping around that area, it is not strange. However, I will like to see it myself and provide scientific deductions of the occurrence.” www.punchng.com/gridlock-lagos-ibadan-expressway-plants-overrun-ogun-river/

At least 87 people died and more than 200 people were injured when a crane collapsed in the Muslim holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. The huge red crane crashed into a part of the Grand Mosque - the largest in the world - that was filled with worshippers at the time. The head of Saudi Arabia's civil defence said strong winds and heavy rains had caused the collapse. Mecca is currently preparing for the annual Muslim Hajj pilgrimage. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to arrive in the Saudi city from all over the world later this month. The collapse happened at 17:23 local time (14:23 GMT), said Director-General of the Saudi Civil Defence Authority, Lt Sulayman Bin-Abdullah al-Amr. It happened at a time when many worshippers were there for Friday prayers. The toll for the dead and injured, tweeted by the Civil Defence Authority (in Arabic), continued to rise throughout the evening. Shortly before the crash, the city had been hit by unusually high levels of rainfall and winds of up to 83kph (50mph), Lt Amr said. A video posted on YouTube, which could not be independently verified, appeared to record the moment the crane fell, with a loud crash heard in the background followed by panic and shouting. Images circulating on Twitter showed what looked like numerous bodies and blood on the floor of the mosque. Lt Amr said an investigation was being carried out to assess the damage, and the "extent of the safety of these sites". Mecca is preparing to welcome Muslims from around the world for the annual Hajj pilgrimage, which begins in about 10 days' time. Islam requires that every Muslim capable of doing so performs a pilgrimage to the site at least once in their lifetime. Saudi authorities began a major expansion of the site last year to increase the area of the mosque by 400,000 square metres (4.3 million square feet), to allow it to accommodate up to 2.2 million people at once. More than three million people undertook the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in 2012. Saudi authorities have taken steps since 2013 to limit the number of people involved. Large numbers of people have resulted in several tragedies over the years, including a stampede in 2006 that killed nearly 350 people. Source : www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-34226003 |

For the immediate past Kaduna Diocesan Bishop of Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, the Most Rev. Josiah Atkins Idowu-Fearon, the time of glory has come having just been appointed Secretary General of the Anglican Communion Worldwide, with headquarters at Lambeth, United Kingdom. The position makes him the second in command after the Archbishop of Canterbury. Breaking a record as the first African to hold the position, Idowu-Fearon has had a number of other high profile albeit controversial achievements in his over half a century of dedicated service to the development of the Anglican Church not only in Nigeria but also across the world. He is expected to serve for an initial renewable period of seven years. Most Rev. Josiah Atkins Idowu-Fearon When at the height of the Kaduna religious riots of 2000, Idowu-Fearon, against all odds, established a centre for the study of Islam in his Kaduna Diocese, a cross section of his flock virtually demanded for his head, calling him all manner of names including that of a Muslim Bishop, infiltrating the Church of Christ. That name tag has tended to accompany the Bishop over these years for a man who actually speaks Arabic apart from holding a Master’s Degree in Islamic Theology. The valedictory lecture and send-forth ceremony for Idowu-Fearon and his wife, Amina, which held Saturday at the Jakaranda Farms, on the outskirts of Kaduna metropolis, attracted a number of dignitaries from within and outside Nigeria, Muslims and Christians alike. Kaduna state Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufa’i was there, along with former Governor Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, Taraba state Governor, Dairus Ishaku, a former Military Governor of Edo state, Senator Tunde Ogbeha, and a former Minister of Defence, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, among several others. The Cleric-Scholar and Passion for Islam Born on January 17, 1949 at Gerinye in Kogi state, Idowu-Fearon said he formally embraced the Christian religion in 1964. Originally enrolled in military school to train as a soldier, the passion to be a priest apparently overwhelmed all other aspirations and as Idowu-Fearon explained during his valedictory speech. “In my fourth year, it had become very clear that the Lord was calling me to be a soldier in His Army, to the extent that in spite of a direct entry to the Nigerian Defence Academy, I was given a sympathetic discharge by the late Gen. Hassan Katsina, in Lagos.” The development, according to him, “turned out to be the channel through which the Lord saved me.” Several years later and in the course of his pastoral training across many institutions, Idowu-Fearon said he developed a special interest for Islam, more so, at a time in Nigeria when the religious harmony that hitherto existed between Christian and Muslim communities went sour. At the Immanuel College, Ibadan, Idowu-Fearon said he met a certain Dr. Stadey who introduced him to what he described as the world of Islam, and, as he put it, “my interest was aroused, I pleaded with the Lord for a scholarship to do some further studies in Islam and I felt the need to carefully study how the Koran presents the nature of Jesus Christ.” The quest later led to Idowu-Fearon’s Master’s Degree programme in, Islam and Muslim-Christian Relations, at Birmingham University. From then on, he delved further into Islam and also studied the Arabic language in the process, at the University of Jordan, Amman, and, eventually turning the Bishop into a visiting Islamic lecturer and Faculty member at both the Wycliffe College, University of Toronto, Canada, and at the Canterbury International Centre, United Kingdom. Back home in Nigeria and applying his various trainings to his primary assignment as Bishop in Kaduna and Sokoto, Idowu-Fearon ran into muddy waters as a number of his flock apparently could not explain how and why a Bishop can be “so close to Islam and Muslims.” This is aside the fact that the Nigerian Anglican community also has its fair share of divisions pertaining to certain ideologies in the Christian religion and Anglicanism in particular. Perhaps, Voltaire’s philosophy may apply to Idowu-Fearon as it is dangerous to be right in matters on which the established authorities are wrong. As a Theology student and researcher, Idowu-Fearon is quite familiar with the concepts of Monophyisitism and Nestorianism, a twin Christology position that insists that Christ has only one nature as opposed to the traditional belief that Christ has two natures, one divine and the other human. Moreover, as a self-confessed disciple of Richard Hooker who is believed to have laid the theological foundation for understanding of the church for Anglicans, Idowu-Fearon says he shares the concepts of the mystical church which is invisible and the visible church. For him, membership of the visible church is determined, among other things, the profession of the Lord Jesus Christ while only God knows those who belong or may eventually be part of the mystical church. Whatever the arguments, for Idowu-Fearon, “in order to create and promote a culture of respect for differences within our Communion, I encourage our bishops in this part of the Communion to cultivate the habit of understanding other positions other than their own. Our bishops in Nigeria within their diocese should promote robust debates between the lay and ordained members and such will get the bishop well-informed.” Blackmail, Mischief, in God’s Name After his consecration in 1990 and given what he describes as his exposure and experiences which were compounded by his “undue” knowledge of Islam, Idowu-Fearon said his colleagues, fellow bishops, did everything possible to frustrate him in the course of his service. According to him, “my being elected as Bishop of Sokoto was seen by some in the then House of Bishops as a way of humbling me but God used our time in Sokoto to expose us to the international community. And, when Kaduna Diocese was going to be vacant, efforts were made to send me to be bishop in Cyprus and the Gulf; this was to get me out of the country. The form was filled and my signature forged without my knowledge. In Cyprus for an interfaith meeting, the Lord revealed it to me through Australian missionaries who volunteered to host me for the conference and the plot was confirmed by the then Secretary General of the Anglican Communion. After my first five years as the first ecclesiastical Archbishop of Kaduna province, again, the powers that be felt that I was too close to the then Archbishop of Canterbury and the Communion at large, that I was promoting Western relativism and that I was going to sell the province of Nigeria to the West. Two bishops were specially commissioned to sell me as a convert to Islam and that Fearon is a Muslim, drinking tea with the Sultan and that Fearon was promoting homosexuality in Nigeria.” The Road to Lambeth Idowu-Fearon’s journey to Lambeth as Secretary General at the Canterbury did not come on a platter of gold. Although he applied for the position, along with 31 others from various countries, Idowu-Fearon believes that God made it possible for him to use his undergraduate and graduate studies in the United Kingdom to make contacts that ultimately laid the foundation for his nomination after beating three other candidates who made the shortlist. According to him, in the years after 1990, opportunities started to open up for him in Britain and the United States of America during which he served on various commissions within the Anglican Communion. Idowu-Fearon was a founding member of the Canterbury’s Compass Rose Council, a foundation member and one of the first three presidents of the Network for Interfaith Concerns. He was also member of the 13-man committee of the Archbishop of Canterbury that looked into the responses to Lambeth Resolution 1; 10 of 1998 as well as member of the committee that produced the Windsor Commission Report of 2003. According to Idowu-Fearon, “as I was thinking and praying about taking an early retirement in order to spend the rest of my active life to build an army of well-informed and articulate Christian leaders to constructively engage their Muslim neighbours and build a culture of respect and peaceful co-existence, the Lord opened a new world of service to me.” To Idowu-Fearon, a Toast -Senator Makarfi, former Kaduna state Governor We have become very close since 1999 when as Governor of Kaduna state, I met with religious leaders and Idowu-Fearon was one of them. You are all witnesses to what we went through especially between 2000 and 2002. He was a reliable and dependable partner in the search for lasting peace, harmony and tranquility in Kaduna state and we have sustained that relationship since then. I have already told him that between London and Nigeria is more or less between Abuja and Lagos. He is committed to Nigeria and he wants peace and tranquility for Nigeria. Physically he may not be resident here but I believe his heart and spirit will be here with us and he will continue to contribute his quota towards our development. He should continue to have faith in God and God that has taken him this far will continue to protect him and make him go even higher. Rev. Dare Ajiboye, General Secretary, Bible Society of Nigeria This is the Lord’s doing and it is marvelous in our eyes. It is our prayer that the Lord will give you courage and wisdom like Joshua and Solomon of old to lead the flock of God to an enviable height and to the Promised Land. There is no doubt that God has prepared and given you the ability to serve His people in this new capacity and at this point in time. We encourage you to be more determined and courageous in fighting the good fight of Faith. The renewed task will no doubt further compound your busy schedule but God who has chosen you will give you the required strength, motivation and good health to do it faithfully as unto Him. Rev. Dr. Owe Boersma, Secretary, European Liaison Committee, Association of Protestant Churches and Missions, Germany In the light of the excellent work which you have been doing till today, bringing together people of different faiths to live together in peace, even against popular mistrust and ignorance, gives us the confidence that the Anglican Community will be glad to have a person with such skills and experience. Rev. Dr. Olav Fyskse Tveit, General Secretary, World Council of Churches, Geneva, Switzerland Your exceptional record of devoted work on Christian-Muslim relations is a specific gift you bring to your new role. Developing the role of churches as peace-builders and dialogue partners in a time when religious-motivated violence is causing devastation to so many is an urgent demand for us all as faithful Christians. I pray that your wisdom and experience will inform not only the activities of the Anglican Communion in this regard but the wider ecumenical family as well. Muslims and Christians must unite to fight secularism, Idowu-Fearon says Coming from the north, do you have some members of your family who are Muslims?Yes, I have some distant members of the family who are Muslims and as a young man, some people tried to initiate me into certain things, some of them fetish, without the knowledge of my mother but I came to Christ at the Nigerian Military School, Zaria in my second year in 1964 and since then, I decided to rely on Jesus Christ alone and no other. I once saw you clutching Dan Bown’s Davinci Code. Some people believe that the book is a direct attack on the Church of Christ. Do you hold that view too? The book is an attack on the church because Davinci is totally against the fact that Jesus Christ lived and died as we read it in the Bible. That book must have been inspired by the Devil and it is coming direct from the pit of Hell, against the Gospel. And, that is why I consider this fighting within the church as a waste of time. Instead, we should come together and be aware of the fact that secularism has become a religion and it is very strong and some of the promoters control most of the media. Christians ought to come together, forget whether we are Roman Catholic, Pentecostal and all others who worship God, the Christian way and join hands with the Muslims who are also fighting secularism. That is my mission. Do you not think that some of the issues you raised in your valedictory speech may actually be responsible for certain disagreements you have with some of your colleagues. Issues as, the visible and invisible church and the concepts of Monophysitism and similar high-sounding words which may not make meanings to an ordinary member of the church? You see, in the Anglican understanding and Roman Catholics also have similar understanding too and that is why the Roman Catholic is one church. But the Anglican Church is a group of churches, 38 different churches coming together and that is why it is a communion. We don’t have a centralized government or authority like the Pope, for the Catholic Church. That is the problem the Anglican Church is facing. When we talk about the invisible church, it means Heaven and only God decides who goes there and you do not need to discipline anybody. From the Bible, we believe that whoever believes in Jesus Christ and takes him as the Lord and Saviour and you are baptised, that person is a Christian and belongs to the visible church. In this visible church, you also have liars, thieves, you have adulterers, cheats and you cannot disown them and say that they are not members of the church because all they need is a confession to believing in Jesus Christ as Saviour. The Bishops and other priests are there to guide the visible church and teach them what the Bible says. But irrespective of going against certain injunctions, you do not have the right to say that they are not members of the visible church. If for example somebody is a serial adulterer, you can suspend him from the church for a while, to correct him or her. In the invisible church, you do not need bishops or priests because God alone decides who become members. But we need the visible church to remind us of the invisible church because in the final analysis, everybody wants to be in the invisible church. On the issue of Monophysitism, I did not want to go further because if I did, some people would throw stones at me but there are some Christians who still believe in Monophysitism. Members of the Coptic Church are Monophysites, they believe in one nature of Christ. But the orthodox position is two natures of Christ, the human and divine, not conjoined. In other words, Jesus is 100 per cent divine and 100 per cent human but only God knows how it is like that. Anglicans, Catholics, Presbyterians, we believe in the two natures of Christ. Is the controversial Centre for Islamic Studies which you established in the Diocese likely to survive your exit? Yes. In fact, I signed a contract this morning (Monday), recruiting two Muslims and two Christians who have Masters Degrees in Islamic Studies, to teach at the centre and I will be paying them from my pocket. They will continue to run the certificate and diploma programmes there. So, the centre will continue and we are going to use the lower part of the new house being built and I am putting up a full library there and the chapel will serve as classrooms until I retire.
