The governments of the United States and the United Kingdom have said they do not recognise the passports being issued by the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra.

The National Director of Information, MASSOB, Sunny Okereafor, had said two weeks ago that the passport was valid worldwide, adding that the travel document costs N5,000 while its renewal costs N2,000

He had said, “I assure you that the Biafran passport is valid. Except Nigeria, other countries of the world accept Biafran passport and allow our citizens to travel with it. In Europe, North and South America, Biafran passport is accepted. Nigeria is the only country that seizes Biafran passport. Go to neighbouring Ghana here, they will stamp the passport for you. Don’t be confused by the propaganda of the Nigerian government that there is nothing like Biafra passport.

“MASSOB appeals to Biafran citizens to procure their passport and use it to travel. If you doubt me, get a Nigerian passport while I have my Biafran passport; when we get to Europe, you will see who they will welcome than the other. Many people with the Nigerian passport have been repatriated, but have you heard of anybody with Biafran passport receiving such ill-treatment?”

However, our correspondent sent an email to the American consulate in Lagos to inquire from the US regarding the claim of MASSOB.

In his response, the Deputy Public Affairs Officer at the consulate, Frank Sellin, said, “The United States does not consider passports purporting to be from a Biafra entity to be a valid legal document for purposes of visa issuance.”

A similar response from the British Government was sent to via email.

The UK recalled that it did not support the disintegration of Nigeria during the 1967 Biafran War and had not changed its stance 49 years after.

The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA)‎ has increased the price of Household Kerosene from N50 to N83. This is contained in its products pricing template, released on Sunday in Abuja. It stated that the N83 per litre price applied only to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) outlets.

The template also showed that at N83, the Federal Government will be making a gain of N10.72 on every litre. It further puts the expected open market price, which is the landing cost plus total margins at N72.28 per litre. The expected open market price is the prevailing open market rate for the product in Nigeria, after taking certain costs into consideration. Giving a breakdown of the price, the PPPRA template put the landing cost of ‎the product at N57.98 per litre, while the total margin due‎ middlemen was put at N14.30.

Some top officials of the Civil Service have been dismissed by the Federal Government for extorting money from 400 applicants and offering them employment illegally. Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, disclosed in Lagos at a meeting with some selected On-Air-Personalities.

He said that the affected officers were on Grade Level 17 in one of the parastatals in the ministry.

He said that the fraudulent officers had included the names of the “applicants” in the Integrated Payroll and Personnel System (IPPIS) before the fraud was discovered.

“The first scandal I met in one of the parastatals when I assumed office was the illegal employment of 400 people. This scandal started with very senior officers up to level 17 in that department.
“They sent out letters and text messages asking people to apply for jobs for a fee of N400,000 and they were given letters of employment.
“They did not stop there. They invited these people to go and be captured on the IPPIS and they even took cameras to hotels to get them captured. At the end of the day the bubble burst.

“One of the victims told these officials, ‘you cannot take my money and still disengage me. I have a valid letter’. That is how we got to know that there is a dedicated account these people pay to. Of course, we dismissed these officials and we even handed them over to the Police,” the minster said.

In this first part of a no-holds-barred interview with PT’ Josiah Oluwole in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, speaks about his administration, President Muhammadu Buhari, and other matters.

PT: You have been in office for over one year now? How has it been? What difference have you made in the lives of Ekiti people?

Fayose: You will recall that I am a second term governor and I must have come with some level of experience otherwise we will be in a very serious and a very terrible situation as a government. This is beside the fact that the economy of the state under the last administration was not impressive. The handling of the economy and other things that happened created a lot of challenges for this administration. I employed a strategy to be transparent and took time to engage the people. When you engage the people in the running of your government, it would leave no room for stories and fifth columnists. You will have the people defend you in the event of any misinformation. The other issue that we cannot ignore is the financial inabilities facing my government as a result of the borrowings of the last administration. One, Ekiti earns about the least in Nigeria. Again, Ekiti has low level internally-generated revenue. When you put all this together, it is not an easy run for the government.

The last administration took two sets of loans – the loan from commercial bank and the bond. The bond was for N25billion and the commercial loan was for N31billion, aside from unpaid salaries. These, put together, have handicapped the government from functioning. But it is not enough to tell stories because we told the Ekiti people that we have answers to these problems, so we have to face it. After explaining the cause of the situation to the people, we still have to find solution to the problems. We reduced the size of government. We had about 34 permanent secretaries heading MDAs. We had to cut it down to 25. Of the 25, we have statutory boards like the Teaching Service Commission, Local Government Service Commission, the Civil Service Commission, etc. They are boards you cannot run like the regular ministries. Cutting the size of government and being realistic is important. Before you do that, you have to be an example. You have to run government like your personal business in terms of the fact you have to feel the pains as an individual in order to win the trust of the people.

We ensured the blockage of all wastages. Even at that, the nose-diving of the allocation that comes to the state is another challenge. Between January to October 2014 when (former governor) Fayemi was here and January to October 2015, we had a shortfall of about N11billion of what accrued to the state within the space of 10 months. That made it uneasy for us to run the government. Within the ambit of this, we need to maintain the payment of salaries. One of the things that can cause the downfall of any government is when you cannot pay the wages of your workers or issues that tend to mortgage the future of workers.

PT: Are the Ekiti people following you in the austere measures you are introducing at the moment?

Fayose: The working class is the pulse of the people because the political class is seen as political heads. When you pay salaries it goes down to the commoners. The man that get his wages will have to get his food in the market, he will have to buy pepper, he will buy fuel and all that and in turn the economy expands and the people are reached. One of my strategies is to bring the workers together and declare the earnings of government every month. There is a document from Abuja that says this is your earnings. I give it to them. The state wage bill is supposed to be N2.6 billion but what we got was N1.375 billion.

That is about half. They know that this government is transparent. I make public announcement. I declare the assets of government. The standing committee of the labour, the NUJ, and all that, come together and I ask them to look into the balance and see how we can pay wages. Actually, if they see that what you earn is not up to what you will pay, they know that it is not the fault of the governor. But what we try to do is to ensure that whatever comes is used judiciously for the benefit of everybody. So communication is important. Many people do not know the purpose of the austere measures. They don’t know the price of oil. They only know the status of their stomachs and so you have to educate them. My style is a government that is in tune with everybody. I am a governor that goes to everywhere and every home. I call the different segments of the society and intimate them. They are happy and they know I am giving my best.

PT: What differences can you spot between your first tenure in office and now?

Fayose: Let me tell you this that it is on record that I took over government in 2003 when the economy was at its lowest ebb. Workers were owed salaries. I recall that I paid all the salaries. At my departure I left over N10billion in the coffers of government. We spent N1.14billion as part of contribution for the recapitalization of Wema Bank, among the states of Oodua. And in the entire tenure, I did not borrow a dime to run the state. Far reaching projects that touched the lives of the Ekiti people were carried out under my government. Forget about politics of blackmail and all the noise. There was no road in Ekiti that was dualised before my coming in 2003. I had to summon courage to demolish houses and pay compensation. I did Ikere to Ado-Ekiti, from Ado-Ekiti up till the state hospital. I did Irona, that is, Mathew Street junction up to Ilawe. I was the one that did Adebowo to the police headquarters. I built the Governor’s Office, the fire station. I built the popular Ayo Fayose Market. Even if you don’t like my face, you have to call that market. I built the road from Ikere to Igbara-Odo, from Igbara-Odo to Ikogosi, from Ikogosi to Aramoko, from Aramoko to Efun-Alaye, and from Ado to Afao. I recall that I built the road from Afao to Ire, and so on. I did a lot you cannot forget so soon.

PT: Why are you not able to do the same now?

Fayose: We are doing our best within available resources. We just dualised Awodele and we are doing many more. But it is more challenging now because of the debt profile of our state. We are going to continue to service it until the year 2036. It is more challenging. They have committed the state so badly. If I come here and tell you that it is not challenging I will be deceiving you. The difference is that we are carrying the people along so they can understand where we have found ourselves. Up till the time the bailout (funds) provided the leeway, it was not easy at all.

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has yesterday ordered that the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu be remanded in Kuje prison pending his trial for treason.

Justice John Tsoho gave the order after listening to Mohammed Diri, counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), and Chuks Muoma (SAN), counsel to Kanu. Muoma had argued that the accused person be remanded in prison custody away from the cell of the DSS.

A Second Republic legislator, Pa Ayo Fasanmi, has said that the trial of former President Goodluck Jonathan for corruption charges is a matter of time.

The nonagenarian politician, who spoke with our correspondent in a telephone interview, on Tuesday, however, said Nigerians should not be in a hurry to see the trial of Jonathan commence.

He said, “What comes round, goes around. Nigerians should be patient with President Muhammadu Buhari. The trial of the former President is bound to happen. How can you have security chiefs under your watch being indicted for corruption charges and you won’t have to be quizzed too?

“President Buhari is only taking his time. It is only a matter of time. It is unfortunate that Nigeria is now being referred to as the Federal Republic of Corruption. The security chiefs couldn’t have acted alone.

“President Buhari is on a silent revolution. He needs the support of every right-thinking Nigerian. By the grace of God, he will succeed.”

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, on Wednesday said there was nothing wrong in bringing the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh, to court in handcuffs in fact he deserve more.

The governor stated this in Benin when he met with the new leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Edo State chapter.
He described the outcry against the handcuffing of Metuh as uncalled for, saying lesser criminals were given worse treatments in the country.

The governor said, “If those accused of lesser crimes are handcuffed and paraded by the police and got no sympathy from the public, Mr. Metuh and others accused of diverting huge public funds, should not have sympathy.”

Oshiomhole said the media should not allow President Muhammadu Buhari to be harassed into silence by those who looted the country’s treasury.

“I want to appeal to the media to join President Buhari in fighting the anti-corruption war because if we don’t, and we allow these people to harass the President into silence, all of us are in trouble.

“I saw some headlines querying why should Metuh be in handcuffs? If people who steal goats, ‘grass cutters’ are in handcuffs; I have been to the police station several times and I see young men who stole not more than N500,000 in handcuffs. They are paraded and made to sit on the floor. Why should a certain set of criminals be treated as if they are not suspected criminals for serious crimes at that?

“When you all reported lavishly how under the former president, the former defence chief set up a military tribunal to try soldiers who ran away from the battlefield and they were condemned to death, it was only Femi Falana who was consistent in fighting their case.

Despite battling to pay a negotiated fine of $5.2 billion slammed on it by the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) for failing to disconnect subscribers with unregistered and incomplete subscriber identification modules (SIM) cards within the stipulated time,, mobile telecommunications giant, MTN was yesterday fined another $160 by the Cameroonian government.

MTN, according to Reuters report, was slammed the fine for failing to pay taxes on games and gambling services.
The fine which was equally extended to another telecommunications firm,Orange and other companies, was an outcome of a wide-reaching probe into the sector,leading to a total fine of $283 million, that included Camtel and Viettel which were also in violation of regulations.

Breaking News- Africa Business World has received reports that there is a huge Biafran rally currently going on in front of the US White House in Washington DC. The rally was described as a protest against the killings of Biafrans by the Buhari led government of Nigeria. The protesters are also calling for the released of what they described as political prisoner Nnamdi Kanu.

The protesters also want an Independent Republic of Biafra which they said was re- annexed back to Nigeria in 1970. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has finalized plans to file fresh criminal charges against Government Ekpemupolo popularly known as Tompolo and a former Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Patrick Akpobolokemi.

A statement on Wednesday by the spokesman of the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren said they will be charged over an alleged scam in the acquisition of a property worth N11.8 billion

Uwujaren said the property: “Mieka Dive Institute, a sprawling expanse, purportedly acquired by NIMASA for the take-off of the Nigerian Maritime University, was approved for an outright purchase by the past administration in the sum of N13, 072,564,822.00 in which a sum of N11, 765, 308, 339.80 had been paid through NIMASA.”

He explained that EFCC investigations showed that the fund was fraudulently claimed through an alleged false presentation of a Certificate of Customary Right of Occupancy of the property and an alleged inflation of the property sum.

Uwujaren added that the same property was allegedly wrongly acquired and wrongly purchased, as the Omadino Community of Delta State, the rightful owners of the property is making a demand for rightful payment of the same land.

Justice Ibrahim Buba of a Federal High Court in Lagos, last week, ordered the arrest of Tompolo following his failure to appear before the court for his arraignment over an alleged N34 billion scam preferred against him, the ex-NIMASA boss and four other persons as well as their companies by the EFCC.

The court consequently fixed February 8, 2016 for their arraignment, the EFCC statement said.

Ayodele Fayose, governor of Ekiti state, on Wednesday accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of “turning governance to Nollywood”. Fayose alleged that close to one year after it won the presidential election, the President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government was still operating as if it was campaigning for votes. He accused the current administration of concocting lies to distract Nigerians from the “destruction of the economy”, challenging Lai Mohammed, minister of information and culture, to name the 15 ex-governors and 55 Nigerians that he claimed stole N1.34 trillion between 2006 and 2013 or “apologise to Nigerians for lying”.

“The reality is that the All Progressives Congress (APC) federal government has destroyed the economy within eight months in power and rather than look for solutions to the problems facing Nigeria, Lai Mohammed and his cohorts are branding bogus figures about stolen money just to cover up their lack of solution to the country’s economic problems,” he said in a statement signed on his behalf by Lere Olayinka, his special assistant on public communications and new media. “They are turning governance to Nollywood, such that when one movie is about to end, they release another one.

As it appears that the $2.1 billion arms deal movie is getting to an end, Lai Mohammed introduced another movie titled N1.34 trillion loot. “Unfortunately for them this time around, Nigerians have become tired of watching the Federal Government movies, they now want reality. Nigerians are now aware of the scam in the $2.1 billion arms deal movie having seen that the amount those already charged to court were charged with is not more than N10 billion and $2.1 billion is over N600 billion. “Therefore, Lai Mohammed must either tell Nigerians details of the 15 former governors and 55 people that he claimed stole N1.34 trillion, where the stolen money is kept and bring back the money or apologise to Nigerians for lying.”
