This country can surprise and give you a red eye all at once. There was a another riot in my area just now. We ran under a bridge for shelter. Udego and I were having a plate of fish pepper soup when we both heard the shout of "Allahu akbar." We were gone from the canteen before Yellow Sisi could say "finish am o" or "pay me my money." "Man mi. You hear that gun?" Udego asked on our way to hide. "No shaking o" I replied. "Comot for road" Udego berated a bulky man in front of us. "Who come Abuja come look street light, eh?" the man replied. Some women in aso-ebi had removed their shoes and were running and sobbing. "Nna eh" Udego turned to me. "Wetin mai-gaskiya dey do sef?" This latest conflict had ruined our plans to run bottles that night. "Wallahi, this president is even more stubborn than warri boys" I replied. "Na wa o. Aboki sef dey form boss" Udego quipped. "It is not a small thing my broda" I added. "I no send if fire burn dis country sef" Udego was frustrated. "How we go take hammer if na fight everyday" I sounded concerned. "This our holy-holy don expire sha" He thought. "Bros, whish level?" It was Akpan hailing us from the betting shop across the road. "Man-must-wack, you don go see landlord?" Udego asked Akpan. "Bros, you fall my hand. You nor fit ask me how school?" Akpan had absconded from home for his backlog of rent. "Your father! Who will pay your school fees?" I was surprised. Udego spoke good english for the first time. |

Discovering William His amazement could not be contained. This man was not the core arch-villain. William didn't come across like an assassin who were known to leave bloodstains in their wake. A former champion marksman, his executions were cold-hearted. His dismissal from the force was disgraceful at best. That event left a fathomless void in the man's heart. William's quest for gallantry was long in the making.. Growing up, he was hostile to authority. His life force sought to be invulnerable to oppression. He gets jaded when he cannot find that freedom. His social education was not lackluster. Indeed he made laughable mistakes but William had majestic ambitions. In his mind royalty had no money's worth. Any other kind of existence would be mortifying. But William could hardly learn to negotiate. He was nimble footed in nature. He was like a man who thought haggling was an obscene occupation. Such men had olympian dreams coloured like a pageantry. But his condition was to perplex him. William has an uncontrolled need to puke. He would not look like a puppy dog on purpose. People think he is a quarrelsome spirit. William had a radiance about him but not enough reliance on his kins. His disease was one remorseless evil. It made rose-cheeked girls laugh him to scorn. It was his sacrificial offering. He only discovered the savagery of existence. Life resembled a shipwrecked island. Shooting stars should know their orbit. The sire should be obedient to the man. It would be magic to sneak out of your suit. One must not squabble over mammon. Polar bears need to be stealthily to catch an iced seal. William began to swagger like a drunk. A man should have no use for tardiness. Honesty is a time-honured ethic. A disease may not torture a corpse. He thought life was tranquil on the other side of town. People search for personal transcendence when their condition are trippingly unearthly. One moon beam, a watchdog harrassed a man climbing over a wall at the border. William removed his pistol and shot the yelping beast. The affair became a zany legend. |
