Travel / Re: A Drive Through Tinapa Resort In Calabar(2022 Review) What Exactly Happened? by Bbsharon(f): 11:06pm On May 24, 2022
The Resort has been abandoned for long and during the End SARS Nationwide protest it was further vandalized and the few shops and mini malls that were still operating were robbed and destroyed, the hotel was also vandalized leaving carcass of a once beautiful resorts left to ruins.

The theatres, studios and most other facilities here are no longer functioning and mainly no events or exhibition goes on here.

I really hope this place is properly looked into and restructured to get it going and live up to its designed expectations as it is a big source of tourism income for Cross River State and the Nation.

So, what exactly happened to this beautiful resort? Why has it become a deserted and abandoned place? While driving through we decided to stop at the reception by the entrance to the waterpark. We could see a swimming pool inside the park close to the water slide but I would dare not jump in that pool even if it's for free as it was crowded and looks dirty.

We were told we had to pay 1500 each to have access to an abandoned water park ride, a crowded swimming pool, and a few working restaurants offering local dishes. Well, we thought there was no need for that as it was not fascinating enough so we left and rather just drive through to observe the beautiful natural surroundings.

The resort located by the Calabar river was commissioned on 2nd April 2007, and was built to be a hub of business and recreational functions and activities with duty free shopping available to tourist and visitors. The resort approximately occupies 80,000 square metres, made up of small shops, warehouses, an entertainment strip which includes a digital cinema, casino, children's arcade, a mini Amphitheatre, restaurants, night clubs and pubs.

The resorts also has an open trade centre for exhibitions and other events, a movie production studio, a water park and parking space, a three star hotel facilities known as the Tinapa Lakeside Hotel and an artificial tidal lake from the Calabar river.

It was all just beautiful nature with little or no activities going on around the resort.

A brief information about the resort as it used to be from way back;

Tinapa Resort was built and designed according to plan to be a business and leisure resort located North of Calabar Municipality in Cross River State Calabar, Nigeria. The resort is under the area allocated as the Calabar Free Trade Zone which is the north area of the port in Calabar. The area is designedly assigned to companies engaged in manufacturing, trading, provision of services and oil and gas activities.

What exactly happened to the beautiful, attractive and popular tourist attraction known as Tinapa Resort Calabar should be a question every well meaning lover of tourism especially in Nigeria should be worried about.

I made a visit May, 2022 to this once beautiful centre of attraction that use to be a hub of great and captivating activities in the city of Calabar and it was clearly an eye sore, save for the beautiful and lush green environment and nature left to be admired, there was nothing else out of the ordinary to make it really worth your stay.

Here is a link to a beautiful video on my YouTube I made of the surroundings while driving through....

Please I think this thread should be closed...the comments here are so disgusting and heartbreaking. So many enablers and rape apologist here, so younger ones reading this up don't start thinking this is norm.

This is what Nairaland should be about.... people sharing their experiences. Is the video perfect?...no... is she a professional?.....no... and are we paying to view?...no... so let's appreciate the freeness.
I never knew such a place existed... but now we know we can plan outings and make the place a popular tourist destination.

@ Op... that's really a rapids... which is more like water flowing down stairs. A waterfalls is more like water free falling from the second floor to the first then continuing.
Was there a fee?..if so how much?... do they charge per head/group/per trip? Do they have refreshments on sale?... toilet facitities?...or you had to ehmmm...dash in the bushes?... which can be the last dash and bring out a search party? Did you drive all the way to the "guide office"?...or had to park some way off and trek? Did you see any animals?..birds?...name?... was the surroundings very quiet?... or there was the occasional ehmmm....roar of nearby lions??
I'm just asking these few questions to help you give us a better coverage of your trip... to fill in what the video didn't capture.
On video.... like someone said earlier... more focus should be placed on the surroundings... afterall... the blog wasn't about ehmmm....perky you and the tourists...it was about the place.

Really ... I was surprised.... the music was pretty good!....and for you the tourists in the car... wasn't bad either.... as if everybody was part of some choir. I just wish some aspiring singers here on NL can sing half as well as you guys!
Looking forward for more of your adventures! Good job!

The beauty of the waterfall is seen more during the dry season.

500naira per head.

No refreshment, no toilets.

There is a parking space in the compound.

Yes, very quiet. Just usual nature sounds and the water.

Birds and lots of insects... Butterflies especially.

Thanks.

Nice compilations..
but as a geologist, that I am..
I am more focused on the rocks..
Oban Massif is a basement terrains, so the rocks there should be igneous and metamorphic buh more of igneous though..

What I know is those rocks are very dangerous. Slippery and not stable.

We saw more of you than the water. I wish you captured the water from its source and how it cascades down to its base. The water is so clean though and I know you had fun. Wish I was in your drew. I love adventure like this

Meanwhile, did you know you can build a really beautiful building using just salt. Check it out http://prodesigners.com.ng/why-you-should-build-your-house-with-salt/

Just so you know most of these places are very dangerous and most especially this. We had struggle taking good pictures and videos. The road was bad and we were terribly exhausted.

A little mis-step and you find yourself in the water or rolling down the rocks.

I loved the scenery, climbing the stairs. Did you see the Forest Rangers?

Went via MCC Road, through UNiCem axis.

how can u say Akpabuyo is close to the water falls haba,it's not stop giving a false information Kwa falls location is very far from Akpabuyo local government

So, less than an hour is what? It took us just an hour to get to the fall from Calabar and we passed through Akpabuyo. I really don't understand what you are trying to prove but I won't go back and forth with you again. It's clearly needless.

If you don't know... Know this now that if you passed the usual Akamkpa route to the fall, the distance is usually longer. That is the Akamkpa route you pass on your way from odukpani or Biase local government.

Akpabuyo? Going kwa falls through Akpabuyo? How bros? Or is it Akamkpa unwanted to say?

Yes, that's the fastest route.

We passed through Atimbo then Akpabuyo, we got to another town before Akamkpa.

And it's no bro undecided

Do NOT come with any slippery foot ware nor too much baggage. The fall has this alluring vibe to it, but you have to be very careful and be sure you have got your stamina and strength together before venturing. It's either you hold firm and be in control or you loose grip and find yourself rolling down the steep.

In all, I had a good team of adventure lovers and it made things quite easy for us.

We left calabar at about 9:45am and got to Akamkpa at about 10:55am. Less than an hour drive if only the road out of Calabar to the next town is in good condition. The road is in a very bad state.

Surprisingly, on getting to the next town, Akpabuyo, the rural roads were considerably good up to the point of the waterfall location.

Gate fee and tour services stands at 500naira per head.

Nothing going on around the area, the little art museum at the reception has been abandoned. The place needs a good face-lift and renovations. A cleared path to the falls should be made and the steps well maintained.

Best time to visit is during the dry season, if you really wish to have a full and up close view of the cascading waterfall with your soul and body still together.

There are about 234 steps that leads down the valley where the fall is. Come with a well gripped footwear, a light water bottle, a back pack to keep your phone and other items. You will be needing all your hands, legs and body to climb through and avoid falling.

There is a tour guide at the fall... A rastafarian who is probably tired of the job and now passed on to his young son of about 14/15years of age. This boy served as our tour guide and I tell you he was exceptional. Has a good command of English and very courteous. He understands the terrain well and was helpful in helping us follow the right tracks.

The boy on the red shirt was our tour guide...

Basically, and according to Google map the waterfall is about 41km from the main city of the state capital Calabar and is also part of the Oban division of the Cross River National Park.

The waterfall is surrounded by very beautiful lush green environment and an eye catching, sparkling natural water. The water flows down a steep gorge down to a stream that forms the main Kwa River at a very high current.

About 3 weeks ago I went on a kind of jungle adventure with some friends to Kwa Waterfalls in Cross River State.

Kwa Waterfalls is located at Anegeje village in Akamkpa Local Government area of Cross River State, Nigeria.

Best bet to get here is either you chatter a cab to take you down from calabar or go through the Oban bus route using the public transport.

So, I did a compilation of our experience in the video below.

I feel I shouldn't just be doing a writeup of my experience alone.

So, yea this my first YouTube video and it's not ghen ghen grin anything, but please Do watch, like and subscribe smiley
