Politics / Re: Do You Like Being Nigerian? by bd1(m): 10:47pm On Oct 31, 2010
I often think about moving out of the United States but every time I ask questions about other countries I get no answers or dishonest ones. I do not want to invest in a air line ticket without some idea of what I would be walking into.

May I ask to you like being as American?

A power related reboot is less likely on a laptop. laptops also have +12V ,+5v, and +3.3v power rails. A laptop maker had a power related recall. I will Google in hopes of finding the recall.

Computers / Re: Apple Vs Non-apple Computers by bd1(m): 5:41pm On Oct 30, 2010
@ denzel2009 bsd and linux hold more of the critical server market than windows. The mac has the same exact ip stack and server combination as BSD.
Computers / Re: My System Restarts Continously: ! by bd1(m): 5:24pm On Oct 30, 2010
This sounds like a hardware issue. Test the power supply. Low voltage on the 12v or 5v would cause the same issue.
Computers / Re: Apple Vs Non-apple Computers by bd1(m): 5:02pm On Oct 30, 2010
It is funny how people talk about hot great mac os is starting with osx. Osx is when mac went to a FreeBSD core. When I run Mac OS side by side against FreeBSD I do not see what the hype is about.

@ puskin you came at me first. I also posted in the linux area I was fire walled. I just did not say how much until now. I am a telecommunications contractor in the united states. I sell network security systems as part of my living. I will add my company information to my profile.
Computers / Re: Strictly Internet Speed Screen Shots v2 by bd1(m): 1:06am On Oct 30, 2010
@ puskin compromising a selinux computer behind a edge firewall IPS and proxy is a very difficult task. Many banks and even government computers would be easier targets. The task is simply not worth the effort. Even if someone had no life evading IDS, connection tracking, and logging would be difficult.
Computers / Re: Strictly Internet Speed Screen Shots v2 by bd1(m): 12:51am On Oct 30, 2010
@ Mavor We are missing too many facts here.

4llerbuntu is posting that he has 2 laptops, 1 desktop, 6 different OS installations. If the 6 different OS installations are running in virtual machines they would act like real computers in terms of bandwidth usage.

He would need a router to get that many computers on line at once. We do not know if the router is running QoS bandwidth management. We Do not know How many computers were using bandwidth when he ran the test.

Speed test is a test of bandwidth available to the client you are running the test on. Bandwidth used by other clients or reserved by router QoS would not be available to the client running the test. Incoming and outgoing traffic on the client not related to the test will also reduce bandwidth available to the run the test.

@ 4llerbuntu do you mind telling us more about your network configuration?
Computers / Re: Strictly Internet Speed Screen Shots v2 by bd1(m): 11:49pm On Oct 29, 2010
@ puskin Using IDM as a speed test is meaningless because many servers limit upload rates based on unique IP connections. Downloading using multiple mirrors is not listed in the features on the programs web site. It would be very hard to fully utilize many internet connections without starting many more downloads at once than I see in most of the scree shoots.

IDM would be one of my last choices to use as a download manager. Bittorrent file support and Md5sum download verification appear to be non existent based on the documentation on its website. Why Download files slowly and than be unsure what you have downloaded?
Computers / Re: The Best ISP In Nigeria? by bd1(m): 1:16pm On Oct 29, 2010
@ bawana44 based on your post you want to use a full T1 connection. Use the Adtran 908 as your gateway. Based on your needs use have space for two to four phone connections on the T1 connection. The Adtran will output the phone lines to a 66 block.

A old computer running linux will make a faster filewall than most cisco routers. I recommend a system called smoothwall. My old 550mhz computer is a much faster router than the cisco 877w router.

Based on what you guys are posting I guess most connections in Nigeria are < 1mbit/sec. Are you guys using ISDN or 2G connections?
Computers / Re: Ubuntu Linux by bd1(m): 6:44am On Oct 29, 2010
@ Koolwilly rescue mode is a option for most linux install cdroms.

If you read the first prompt from the Ubuntu cdrom you will see how to boot into rescue mode.
Computers / Re: Apple Vs Non-apple Computers by bd1(m): 4:25am On Oct 28, 2010
@ 4llerbuntu things will change as faster internet connections become available. Many Computer professionals here see windows as an abomination. Many large companies here are powered by non micro$oft systems. Dollar general, Lowes, Harborfreight, star2star, and Autozone have mission crucial systems running linux. The list of ISPs running Linux or BSD here is very long. Mac OS is only BSD with lots of commercial code on top of it.
Computers / Re: Ubuntu Linux by bd1(m): 2:02am On Oct 28, 2010
@ Koolwilly Backup all data on the drive. This WILL destroy ALL data on the hard drive!

Boot the install cdrom in rescue mode. Run badblocks -sw /dev/hda or badblocks -sw /dev/sda on the hard drive.

Once again this WILL destroy ALL data on the hard drive![/center]

What types of Internet connections are available in Abuja? How how fast are they in mbits/sec or kbits/sec. How much do they cost? How stable are they?

If you work in that industry what is the pay like for field and support technicians.
Computers / Re: Ubuntu Linux by bd1(m): 11:14am On Oct 26, 2010
@ 4llerbuntu

When you get around to installing virtualbox also install xterm. Virtualbox is much faster if you start it from the console.

ps -A | grep gdm & ps -A | grep kdm

if you see kdm use /etc/init.d/kdm stop

if you see gdm use /etc/init.d/gdm stop

Once the GUI is down.

xinit /usr/bin/xterm &

This will start xorg with only a terminal. Than type virtualbox &

Typing exit in xterm will end the Xorg session.

/etc/init.d/kdm start
or
/etc/init.d/kdm start

Will bring things back to normal.

@ 4llerbuntu The first poster posted ubuntu is between mandriva and fedora in terms of usability.

I have a link that shows what I am saying about the Family tree of Linux distributions.
http://www.gnome-look.org/CONTENT/content-pre1/57722-1.png

I realize you can damage your system with the root account but how do we learn if we do not make mistakes. When I started using Linux in 1996 there was no such thing as n00b Linux systems. Linux users were more proficient users than. My current Linux systems are Gentoo, Debian, ASTLinux and ClearOS. Gentoo is my desktop computer. Debian powers my LAN side MySQL data base, Samba, and ZoneMinder. ClearOS functions as my firewall and provides a few services. ASTLinux powers my Asterisk PBX system.

I used gconf to change the window menu. The fact that the window placement was changed says some agree with me on that issue.

The computer I did the install on has a Nvidia nForce3-250Gb chip set. From what I can tell there is an issue with the kernel used on that install cd. My md5sum matches the one on the install page.

I gave the user Ubuntu because I thought Gentoo would be too much for a new user to handle.
Computers / Re: Ubuntu Linux by bd1(m): 4:12am On Oct 25, 2010
I think it is strange the the original poster posted  "Ubuntu is somewhere in between Mandriva (formerly Mandrake) and Fedora Core in terms of ease of use." because Mandriva and Fedora Core are Redhat based systems. Why not compare Ubuntu to other Debian based systems like Mint or the mother system Debian?

Things were very wrong from the start. The standard install cd image has a bug that causes the install program to be unable to mount the cdrom on some chip sets. This forces users to use the DVD image or use the internet install cdrom. The ubuntu team has to know about this because I found several post about it when researching a solution on google.

The default window menu buttons are on the wrong side of the window and in the wrong order. The arrangement makes my eyes hurt.

Flash is constantly crashing in Firefox and Google Chrome. They could have at least selected a stable version of flash. I do not have that issue on other distros.

The shutdown button in the GUI did not even work. I had to shut the system down in a terminal using "shutdown -h now". You should not have to know linux commands if you run a n00b distro. I was also disappointed that the root account is disabled in Ubuntu. Having to use sudo for all administrative task quickly became irritating. One of the first things I did was "sudo passwd"

The only thing that I liked is that the kernel is complied with desktop friendly settings.

My attempt to convert a windows user ended in complete disappointment. If that was my first Linux experience I would still be running windows.
