Education / 15+ Unnecessary Mistakes Every First Year College Student Must Avoid by BhbHoLLAH(m): 10:11am On Dec 13, 2019
Congratulation! You have been offered provisional admission to study geography in the university of Nigeria (Nsukka).

That messages isn't the yardstick to your success yet, but the totals ends of your college days and semesters in campus will justify your worth and efforts during your academic years.

Hence, we have provided you some unnecessary mistakes you must avoid in your first year in college be it a boarding school or faraway distance learning.

Firstly, How do you feel when you check your admission status and you saw congratulation!!!

You will be overwhelmed with joy.

Secondly, How will you feel when your first semester Examinations result is out?

You will feel anxious about it

Lastly, if the result is bad , who is to be blamed?

No one else, rather than you as a student.

Good students brings this thoughts into reasoning in their first day in campus which tends to heralds their mind, by ensuring them, to have a taste of preparedness against any obstacle coming up on their way.

Now, let's check some common mistakes to avoid in your first year in campus.
The new students in every Nigerian school is known to be " FRESHERS " while those they met in the college are the "STALITES".

Every new student who dreamt of having good grades with successful outcome must endeavour to check the following mistakes because

Those who refuses to learn by revelation always learn by experience

18. Going to the lecture room very late.

Normal lectures start up by 8:00am , likewise all other departments. There are some major department and faculties that are competitive and tough in terms of admission intake and others. Students in this category will be much more than others and their capacity will fill the class to the brem.

Examine a polytechnic whose public administration department is having:

OND1. (ft). 1570students
OND 2. (Ft) 850stundents
ND1yr1 (pt) 400students
ND2yr2. (pt) 280students
ND2yr3. (pt) 240student

Though, the students will be divided into groups according to their matriculation number, still their can't be conducive learning environment but there will be a chance of grace for those who comes to class early and regularly.

New student who usually comes to school late will miss class lectures and attendance at times test might be conducted and failure to partake in any "Failure is calling".

17. Conflicting everyone

Going to a far distance school, is like a new life with a new living,
This is very certain inside the classroom, you as a student who is determined to success must never engage in any act of bullying and gangsterism.

sociology perspectives once asserts that
No social milieu exits without at least an iota of criminological/Deviant behavior

And be aware that those that are diligent and innocent must expect bullying in class but they must never retaliate or fire words to one another. If you can keep yourself safe from all this act, kudos, you are on a saver side.

16. Copy and paste of assignment and test

This is very rampant among student allover the country. unserious students are now found of this bad act. once assignment is given out, good student write and make research on the context of the assignment, while those on the other hand usually collect and copy what's been written from the original copy.

How do this act implicate most students ?

Since they are lazy and always fatigue to write and jot notes in the class, every lectures has their marking strategies and grading system to fail those kinds of student. How?

plagiarized copy can be easily identified resulting to (zero score).

Daft among them still copied the person's matric no out of haste. resulting to (Zero score)

15. Having more new credit cards

Any students who believe in a philosophy of materialism and being an economic babbitry might regrets his/her college years when having more than two to three credit cards.

A lot of student now have additional ATM card to receive freebies, money and other materials worth from different peoples, sugar daddies and babymama's without the knowledge of their parents or friends.

14. Not asking for help

One is perfect anywhere, we all all moving unto perfection
.

A good student must seek for the knowledge and advice of others. Asking for help in this aspect has some limitation, but still, you can't be news in campus and you refuses to ask, that means you are fooling yourself.
A new student must ask for helps from others like.

Where is the SUG block ?
Where can I locate A.Z cafe ?
Where can I get a canteen to eat?

This are simple questions you can ask anyone that won't cause any up rise or argument.

13. Mingling with all and not few
Every individual has his/her stratified classes, yet, you as a new students, you don't need to mingle will all students but you must talk and cheer feelings with few .

Though, you have no cause to fight anyone but to be successful you must examine your colleague's character and behavior before you move on with them.

12. Not checking the department for update and news

You have no point or excuses when you missed the timely update on the departmental notice board.

First year student must take few periods out of the time left to check the department, important information might be dished out which could not reach the total number of the general population, but the departmental notice board will carries it. atimes, such notice might expires before 24hrs because it is something timely .

11. Not jotting down notes

Note taking and note making is very essential in our learning techniques.
When I lecturer comes to the class, what's expected of a students is to prepare for note jottings and after class, every one can make his/her comprehensive note to their taste.

A fresh student in the campus who never bothered about taking note might blame his/her self for such escapades after the semester examination result is finally out.

10. Hiding Bad Grades from parents

With this maxim akin to the subject arising " All hands are not the same" the fact is applicable that " We can't have the same grades despite we both read. Learn, practice, relax and pray"
.

When you realize that your grades after the semester result is bad.

"Advice to withdrawal or
Failed"

You don't need to hide this, since no conditions tends to be permanent, surely, a change will come a particular unexpected day.

Every students who finds themselves in this awkward scenario must create an awareness to their patents and relatives for them to render more assistance either financially. Morally, spiritually or physically.

09. Going to an uninvited parties

A fresher who is going to an uninvited parties, ceremonies and other frivolous gatherings will surely mess up their lives over there.

Suddenly, you will realized that those friends you both went to the party with, are set of lauts, gangsters and thugs, and if you can't cope with that atmosphere, problem will arise because you are a gatecrasher.

08. Engaging in protest within and outside the campus

Its very sickening when a first year students of Nigerian tertiary institution is engaged in a protest in the campus.
Protest are meant for the Student Union Government (SUG) in conjunction with some highanked Non academic officials in the school against a particular issue either on the tuition fee or issues of sort.

A year old student in the campus must never engage in this act because it always boomerangs once they are held by the security agent it can lead to expel and arrest.

07. living a couples life

No parent advocate the support for lovers living together in the campus, especially the new students.
A great mistake most student make is by living in a couples life. Sooner than later, preparation for marriage will begins and if they can't meet up with their educational standard, problem will arise!

06. Too much Extra-curriculum activities

A good day to campus, as a new student, you don't have to engage yourself in all extra curriculum activities. Most activities aside form lectures and practicals are atimes more time consumed activities which all new students must partially stay away from to have a blissful academic days.

Imagine this scenario

A new student of the department of mass communication engaging his/herself in activities like:

1. National Association of Mass communication student (Namcos)
2. Association of Igbira student (AIS)
3. Dancing drama association (DDA)
4. Writers wheel & campus novelist
5. Mamcos & camcos

Exam! Exam!! Examination!!!
Onto Educational perspectives and perceptions of an academia denotes an examination to be a formal test of a person's knowledge or proficiency in a subject or skill.

°An examination (exam) is a test. It is an assessment to measure a test-taker's knowledge, life skill, aptitude, physical fitness, or standing in some other topic. It tends to know how qualified and certified the students is before proceeding to the next level in an higher institution.

Philosophy and sociologist claimed the assertions based on the fact that positives and odds makes up man living.
No one is bound to fail in an academic environment but still, All student cannot be the best despite how conducive the atmosphere will be .

There are varieties of activities to partake in any higher institutions, be it Colleges of education, monotechnics, polytechnic and university to improve ones academic and grammatical competencies.

A determined student willing to graduate with high CGPA must posses " Transparency, Integrity and hospitality , lots more.." because such character works with total mindset in the course of studying in the campus.
Any one unfortunate to fail in an higher institutions will have the below reasons to his/her failure in academic.

REASONS WHY STUDENTS FAILED AFTER EXAMINATION.
As said earlier on, that nobody is bound to fail, ones outcome is as a result of what one planed as at initial stage of schooling.
Any one who found out his/her result as "Advice to withdraw or failed" has to course to doubt that he/she designed it by herself.

The below reasons are behind such failure.

(01) NO FUTURE AMBITION
Most students securing admission into their school of choice has no future target and goals for been admitted. They follow the deceptions that since they are admitted , their lifestyle will upgrade to their satisfactions

(02) NO IOTA OF AGENDA SETTING( laziness, lack of interest)
Some students find all lectures, classes very stressful to cope with, they can't adapt to the rough atmosphere while in class but they got taken away by the social hullabaloo caused by undetermined ones in class. No interest in writing nor comprehending and assimilating the lecturers oral speech presented in the class.

(03) BAD READING HABIT
Bad reading posture enhance bad reading habit by a students who has no interest in in-depth reading than to glance and review the pretext of such literature.
A deceit in All handbooks is the photograph, pictures, graphics, illustration, design which captivate the readers attention to bygone the written text in a piece of writing.
some student don't have specific time to study, they while away time with frivolous act and with unrealistic expectations to come out with good grades with their bad timely reading hours.

(04) LACK OF ENTHUSIASM TO A PARTICULAR SUBJECT or GRADE

Lack of enthusiasm prevailed
Among some set of student, they lost their hope in a particular course due to how hectic, complex and concrete such subject is. they masterminds their mindset to

"I will fail MAC203(Investigative and interpretative journalism"...

" If I have grade pass , am okay, at least, I won't go home"

All this mindset tends to kill the build in intellects and potentials in the central nervous system(CNS) of such student.

(05) FINANCIAL PROBLEM

its very sympathetic when most student fails due to the inability to afford the tuition fee, tuition fee varies in most schools all over .
Also, another diverse financial problems is unable to meet up with good standard of living such like clothing, Nutrition, housing & shelter and unable to buy handouts sold out by faculty lecturer and deens.

An act of postponing actions that needs to be done instantly, this so called "procrastination" has been a social malady among students in tertiary institutions.
They hoity-toitily feel superior to do the things that could have been done with their group mates. rather , they call for separate days, time for their job to be done.

(07)BAD TEACHING STYLE/TECHNIQUES.
Either a private owned college or public financed college, the key to student good grades, outcome and outstanding result is from those that impact facts, knowledge and teachings to their intellects.

Some lecturers are sadist and cruel under their tyrant adminstration, Even though, some gives bad information, wrong materials, errors and other things that's appalling to their departmental/faculty protocol's.

(08) OVERCONFIDENCE
Feeling sure about your own ability to do things and be successful. over confidence is not welcomed in all school because it is a great killer of knowledge, most genius in schools, snub their lecture notes, ebooks and others since they belief in the power of words composition, not regarding that they need to comprehend the text , audio and other methods in lecture room to aids double perfections.
Unfortunately, for some with this characters, they failed woefully because of answers not corresponding to question asked in their test or examination.

(09) PEER GROUP (GANG)
Joining bad gangs, bandits, hoodlums and thugs on campus really affect student academic performances.
No gang group influence good moral life, thus, they destruct the life of their members which result to bloodshed, clash and conflict among rival cult group in and outside campus vicinities.

In addition to above issue , a lot of reasons can also be stated such as
(I) Unable to buy handout sold by departmental lecturers
(ii) Not following Examination guide
(iii) Boomerang attitude to faculty officers or exam coordinators

As a student of any tertiary institutions who dreamt of having good grades .
