Foreign Affairs / Vietnamese Billionaire Sentenced To De3th For $44bn Fraud by birth100: 4:44pm On Apr 11
Truong My Lan, a prominent property developer, was sentenced to death for siphoning $44 billion from Saigon Commercial Bank over 11 years.
Vietnamese billionaire sentenced to de3th for $44bn Fraud
She faced a historic trial in Vietnam for orchestrating one of the world’s largest bank frauds.

Authorities revealed staggering details: Lan’s loans accounted for 93% of the bank’s lending, with $27 billion unrecoverable. The trial involved 2,700 witnesses and 85 defendants. Lan’s lavish lifestyle contrasted sharply with her courtroom appearance.

According to prosecutors, for three years from February 2019, she ordered her driver to withdraw 108 trillion Vietnamese dong, more than $4bn (£2.3bn) in cash from the bank, and store it in her basement.

Her fraud, executed through shell companies and bribery, raised questions about regulatory oversight and the influence of powerful figures in Ho Chi Minh City’s business and political circles.

Analysts see the trial as a move to curb corruption and assert the Communist Party’s control over the city’s business landscape. However, it also highlights the challenge of combating corruption without stifling economic growth, a delicate balance for Vietnam’s future.

Crime / Court Sentences Man To 45 Years Imprisonment For Attacking His Wife With Machete by birth100: 3:05pm On Jan 20
An Ondo High Court sitting in Akure has sentenced a 45-year-old man, Shuaibu Kalejaiye, to 45 years imprisonment, for attempting to kill his wife.

The trial judge, Justice Adeyemi Fasanmi, handed down the sentence on Kalejaiye on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, after he found him guilty of the attempted murder.

The court convicted Kalejaiye and sentenced him to 20 years imprisonment on count one and 25 years imprisonment on count two.

The convict was said to have committed the offences on December 5, 2019, at about 10:30am at Ayeka, New Site, via Okitipupa, Ondo State.

He was arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on an attempt to kill one Adeola Olabisi Kalejaiye contrary to Section 320 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 37, Vol.1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

To prove its case, the prosecution led by State Counsel, Helen Falowo Esq, called three witnesses and tendered three exhibits during the trial.

In its defence, the defendant, Kalejaiye, and one other witness testified.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the crime.

According to the court, the prosecution proved the case against the defendant beyond reasonable doubt.

The judge also noted that the defendant did not show remorse for his crime.

“The court has considered the allocutus of the defence counsel, but the position of the law is binding on us all.

Fasanmi said that the evidence before the court showed that the defendant brutalized his wife and caused havoc to her body, by inflicting injuries all over her body.

WriterNig:
🇷🇺 Russian President Vladimir Putin took a dip in icy waters to mark the Orthodox feast of Epiphany in the wee hours of January 19, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

When asked if the president had taken an Epiphany dip, Peskov said: "Yes, he did it to mark Epiphany according to tradition."

Epiphany (Baptism) bathing is one of the oldest folk traditions existing in Russia. The Christian holiday commemorates the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River.

Orthodox believers across the world celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, one of the main Christian holidays, on January 19. Epiphany bathing usually takes place in the early morning hours of January 19.

The Kremlin first publicized Putin’s Epiphany exploits in 2018. According to Peskov, previously, the president followed the tradition, but didn’t advertise it. Last year, the head of state took his icy dip in a Moscow suburb.

Russia is the most sanctioned country in the world according to Castellum.AI.
Leading the sanctions against Russia are the United States, Canada, Switzerland and the United Kingdom with 3,551, 2,765, 2,225 and 1,749 restrictions, respectively.

The majority of those sanctions target individuals (11,462), while entities have 4,344 sanctions against them, vessels have 169 and aircraft 102.

Before the invasion of Ukraine, Iran was by far the most-sanctioned state in history, with 3,616 active sanctions by the United States, the United Nations, the EU and countries like Australia, Canada, India and Israel.

The majority of the sanctions imposed on Syria, which ranks third on Castellum.AI’s list, stem from the events surrounding the Syrian civil war starting in 2011.

Not included in these figures are sectoral sanctions like general trade embargos on gas or oil.

On top of the sanctions put in place by nation states and governing bodies, over 1,000 companies have in some capacity withdrawn from the Russian market, according to researchers at the Yale School of Management.

Lagos Court Sentences Security Guard To Life Imprisonment For Raping 13-Year-Old Girl
InformationngJan 9, 2024 12:00 PM
Rape
Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, has sentenced one Olawale Olarewaju, to life imprisonment for raping a teenage girl in Lagos State.

Olarewaju, a guard, was convicted and sentenced by the Judge on Monday.

The Judge also chided the Ikoyi Custodial Centre for the loopholes in its operation, accusing the centre of being behind the delay in hearing the case and delivering justice.

The defendant had been in prison custody for eight years before his conviction yesterday.

He said: “The defendant was in the Ikoyi Custodial Centre and remained there for about eight years from the day of his remand until he was produced before me on January 3, 2023 for arraignment.

“The proceedings demonstrated gaps in the operation of the Nigeria Correctional Service.

“It is mind-boggling to hear that the defendant has been in Ikoyi Custodial Centre since 2016 but was brought to court for the first time in 2023.

“The correctional centre was directly responsible for the defendant’s long period of awaiting trial and this is appalling.”

In his judgment, Oshodi held that the prosecution proved the ingredients of defilement with charge number LD/2359C/2016 against the defendant.

The judge stated that the survivor, testified before the court that she was 13 years when the defendant had carnal knowledge of her and that the convict was a security guard at a construction site.

He said that the survivor told the court that the convict forcefully had sex with her when she went to fetch water at the site.

Oshodi said: “The prosecutrix gave her testimony and said that she went to fetch water at the construction site where the defendant (convict) worked when he came from her back, closed her mouth, and found herself in the room with him.

“She said that the defendant ‘tore my clothe, and forcefully had sex with me and I started having pains in my vagina.’

“She testified further that she informed her parents about the incident and her father reported the case at the nearest police station.

“The prosecutrix further told the court that she was taken to Mirabel Medical Centre for examination.”

Oshodi said that the evidence of the survivor was substantiated with that of her father who was the Prosecution Witness Two.

He said the survivor gave a vivid and unshaken testimony of what the defendant did to her.

“I believe her.

“The defendant’s denial does not hold water as he admitted knowing the prosecutrix but made a u-turn during cross-examination that he did not know her.

“He also admitted that the prosecution came to the compound to fetch water,” Oshodi said.

The judge held that Olarewaju contradicted himself and made his evidence-in-chief unreliable.

He thereafter convicted him of the charge and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Oshodi said that the convict’s name should be entered in the Sexual Offences Register maintained by the Lagos State Government.

During the trial, the prosecution called two witnesses while the defendant testified as the sole witness.

According to the prosecution, the offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015

Fire for Fire’: Military Veterans Threaten to Boycott Armed Forces Day in Lagos over Soldier’s Arrest
Nigeria Info FMJan 8, 2024 8:52 AM

The Coalition of Concerned Veterans (CCV) has issued Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State a five-day ultimatum to personally apologize to the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) for what they call "public misconduct."

This demand stems from the governor's order to arrest a soldier on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway last Tuesday and his subsequent remarks that were captured in a viral video.

In a statement on Sunday, CCV's spokesperson, Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts, emphasized that failure to apologize will result in Lagos State missing the 2024 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.

The statement partly read, “I already drafted a letter yesterday, that will be delivered to the Governor this week and copy all other relevant Government authorities.

“In that letter, a 5-day ultimatum is given to the Governor to leave his comfort Zone in Lagos and come down to Abuja and apologize to the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) and by extension, the Armed Forces as a whole, for his ‘public misconduct’.”

Herberts stressed that regardless of the soldier's actions, the governor had no right to use derogatory language on him.

“We want to state clearly, the Governor has no right to use such derogatory word on a soldier, no matter what his offence is.

“The Governor has offended our constituency. Those who know him or close to him, should get the message across to him. An injury to one is injury to all of us.”

Highlighting the military's crucial role in democracy, Herberts declared plans to lead all veterans associations affiliated with CCV in a protest at Tafawa Balewa Square on January 14, 2024.

“Veterans are coming in their numbers. Let him bring out his thugs. It will be fire for fire!” he wrote.

NUC Uncovers 100 Fake Professors In Nigerian Universities
newsinvestigatorsng.comJan 6, 2024 1:00 AM

News Investigators/ The National Universities Commission (NUC) says it has uncovered about 100 fake professors in universities across the country.

This was disclosed by the Executive Secretary of NUC, Abubakar Rasheed, in a bulletin published by the commission.

Unconfirmed reports said Mr. Rasheed, a professor made the disclosure at the annual retreats for Vice-Chancellors of all universities in the country, held between October 28 and November 5 at the NUC Headquarters in Abuja.

It was not clear the criteria employed by the NUC to determine the deficiencies of the alleged fake university teachers.

The report, however, quoted Mr. Rasheed as saying that the ‘fake professors’ details were posted on the commission’s website, forcing it to send the names to the various universities for verification.

The NUC scribe urged the vice-chancellors to delegate desk officers to check the list of professors in their respective universities before uploading the same on the provided website.

He, however, commended them for their cooperation with the NUC Strategy Advisory Committee (STRADVCOM) which published the Directory of Full Professors in the Nigeria University System (NUS and Statistical Digest of the NUS 2017-2018, among others.

Mr. Rasheed announced that the updated version of those documents would be published by December 2019, adding that the essence was to make the NUS very visible both locally and internationally

He gave assurance that the statistical digest would be updated every first quarter of the year.

Stressing that the fight against fake professors was a collective responsibility, he asked the vice-chancellors to make sure they have accurate statistics of staff, students, and other components in their respective universities off-hand.

He revealed that a lot of anomalies were found in private universities, including the issue of someone who had barely taught for two years being awarded professorship.

Consequently, the NUC scribe appealed to the vice-chancellors to notify the commission about any fake professor in their respective universities and their environs.

He thanked them for compelling professors in the irrespective universities to upload their curricula vitae on the website which was used in the compilation of the directory of full professors in the Nigeria University System (NUS) and had helped in identifying the fake professors.

The retreat was organised in three separate meetings with federal, state and private universities’ vice-chancellors respectively.

It was aimed at rubbing minds with the university bosses on their responsibilities in the NUS, as well as discussing their challenges with a view to addressing and finding solutions to them.

The NUC scribe assured vice-chancellors of federal universities that the government would continue to ensure that technocrats and elder statesmen were appointed as Chairmen and Pro-Chancellors of Governing Councils of federal universities.

Tension In Anambra As Gov Soludo Gets 48-Hours To Resign
The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) has called for the resignation of Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, citing his alleged inability to address the state’s security challenges.

This comes in the wake of a Thursday night attack that resulted in the death of two policemen, two civilians, and the abduction of several others.

In a statement by its President General, Goodluck Ibem, COSEYL expressed deep concern over the security issues plaguing the state and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible for the heinous attacks.

“It is worrisome that such a deadly attack could be executed during the Christmas period, a time highly respected and revered by Christians all over the world. This is a big slap, and we will not take it lying low. Those hoodlums must be arrested and prosecuted immediately,” the statement emphasized.

COSEYL gave Governor Soludo a 48-hour ultimatum to resign and issue an apology to the people of Anambra State for what they perceive as leadership incompetence and a lack of capacity to defend the citizens.

'Bandits Need Hospitals, Schools, Build It For Them' – Sheikh Gumi Tells FG

Controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, has asked the federal government to build hospitals and schools for bandits as a means of improving their livelihood.
Gumi, who said the government was adopting old-fashioned ways to fight the insecurity in the country, urged the government to negotiate with bandits and help them have a future by providing them with necessary amenities.

The renowned cleric claimed that spending large sums of money purchasing weapons to combat insurgency is outdated.

Naija News understands that Gumi stated this during a recent interview on Trust TV, where he emphasized the importance of the government focusing on non-kinetic strategies to address the issue of insecurity.

He stated that banditry is a social problem rooted in the long-standing farmer-herder crisis in the country’s northern region.

Sheikh Gumi suggested that engaging in an honest dialogue with the perpetrators could be instrumental in resolving this menace.

Regarding the recent mistaken military bombardment of Tudun Biri residents in Kaduna State, the former military officer asserted that it is high time for the military to refrain from interfering in internal security challenges. He further emphasized the need for a stronger police force to effectively tackle issues such as banditry.

Gumi said: “This is not the first time such is happening. The military should fight the military. Tank by tank. Jet by jet. The military should be out of fighting insecurity. We are not fighting Cameroon or Togo.

“And the jet fighters should not be used on citizens. I cannot imagine any American president, no matter how instructive, would use F16 to bombard Americans. Impossible. He would go down the next day.

“What we need are very good policies. Then stronger policing. That’s where our money should go. All those people should be involved in community policing.

“In every society, you have very good people and they are the majority. Nigerians are very humble people; very resilient, and can sustain a lot of hardship. So I don’t see why good governance and good policing should be a big deal.

“All the money we spend on buying all these Second World War aeroplanes and artillery and jets to fight insurgency is an archaic way of dealing with this issue. And billions of naira are spent on that.

“Negotiate with these people. Build for their schools and hospitals. Let them have a future. Build for them markets. Even the people we call bandits, what they sometimes complain that they no longer have cattle markets because whenever they establish a market, it gets destroyed.

“So the military should be out of this picture completely. We are not fighting a foreign country. We should develop our internal security.”

Politics / Maine’s Top Election Official Removes Trump From 2024 Primary Ballot by birth100: 8:34am On Dec 29, 2023
Maine’s top election official removes Trump from 2024 primary ballot
By Marshall Cohen, CNN
6 minute read
Updated 9:59 PM EST, Thu December 28, 2023

Maine’s top election official has removed former President Donald Trump from the state’s 2024 primary ballot, in a shock decision based on the 14th Amendment’s “insurrectionist ban.”

Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows paused her decision pending a potential appeal in state court, which Trump’s team said they intend to file.

The decision makes Maine the second state to disqualify Trump from office, after the Colorado Supreme Court handed down its own stunning ruling that removed him from the ballot earlier this month. The development is a significant victory for Trump’s critics, who, citing the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, say they’re trying to enforce a constitutional provision that was designed to protect the country from anti-democratic insurrectionists.

Bellows, a Democrat, issued the decision Thursday after presiding over an administrative hearing earlier this month about Trump’s eligibility for office. A bipartisan group of former state lawmakers filed the challenge against Trump.

“I do not reach this conclusion lightly,” Bellows wrote. “Democracy is sacred … I am mindful that no Secretary of State has ever deprived a presidential candidate of ballot access based on Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment. I am also mindful, however, that no presidential candidate has ever before engaged in insurrection.”

Ratified after the Civil War, the 14th Amendment says American officials who “engage in” insurrection can’t hold future office. But the provision is vague and doesn’t say how the ban should be enforced.

Still, the Maine decision builds on the momentum that Trump’s critics have claimed after the Colorado ruling. Before Colorado, several other states, like Michigan and Minnesota, rejected similar efforts.

In a statement Thursday, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung accused Bellows of being a “virulent leftist” who has now “decided to interfere in the presidential election.”

“Democrats in blue states are recklessly and un-Constitutionally suspending the civil rights of the American voters by attempting to summarily remove President Trump’s name from the ballot,” Cheung said.

In her decision, Bellows concluded that she has a legal obligation to adhere to the 14th Amendment’s insurrectionist ban and remove Trump from the primary ballot.

“The oath I swore to uphold the Constitution comes first above all, and my duty under Maine’s election laws … is to ensure that candidates who appear on the primary ballot are qualified for the office they seek,” she said.

Explaining her reasoning, Bellows wrote that the challengers presented compelling evidence that the January 6 insurrection “occurred at the behest of” Trump – and that the US Constitution “does not tolerate an assault on the foundations of our government.”

“The record establishes that Mr. Trump, over the course of several months and culminating on January 6, 2021, used a false narrative of election fraud to inflame his supporters and direct them to the Capitol to prevent certification of the 2020 election and the peaceful transfer of power,” Bellows wrote. “I likewise conclude that Mr. Trump was aware of the likelihood for violence and at least initially supported its use given he both encouraged it with incendiary rhetoric and took no timely action to stop it.”

Decision paused pending appeal
Bellows said her decision on Thursday will be put on hold until Maine’s Superior Court – a trial-level court – makes a ruling.

Maine’s laws mandate that the Superior Court must make a decision within 20 days from Thursday, or January 17.

The rules for appeals, and Bellows’ choice to pause her decision, mean that the state courts will likely weigh in on Trump’s eligibility quickly, in January, before ballots would be sent out to voters.

In her decision, Bellows leaned on the Colorado Supreme Court ruling, which has also been paused while the appeals process plays out.

“The exercise of state authority to keep unqualified candidates off the ballot is contingent on the state creating a process by which to do so,” she wrote, citing the Colorado decision.

The secretary of state went on to note that the Colorado ruling has been appealed to the US Supreme Court, but said that a possible reversal of that ruling by the nation’s highest court “does not relieve me of my responsibility to act.”

CNN’s John Berman pressed Bellows Thursday evening on whether she wanted the Supreme Court to have the ultimate say on her decision.

The secretary avoided directly answering his questions, instead noting that the nation’s highest court is likely to eventually weigh in on the matter and that she’ll follow its ruling.

“I think it is really important that all of us have a role to play,” she said on “Anderson Cooper 360”. “And I certainly do think the United States Supreme Court is the ultimate interpreter of Section Three of the 14th Amendment. So, yes, I think ideally they will rule and they haven’t yet but certainly should they rule, we will abide by their ruling.”

Maine secretary of state says January 6 was an insurrection
In her decision, Bellows said she had “little trouble” concluding that the US Capitol riot meets the definition of an insurrection, and that Trump “intended to incite lawless action” to stop the transfer of power.

On that day, Bellows wrote, a “large and angry crowd” entered the Capitol and “assaulted the capitol police officers charged with defending it, vandalized and stole property, and ransacked offices.” She added that the members of the mob were “organized behind a common purpose,” to “prevent by force the certification of the results of the 2020 presidential election that was scheduled to occur in the halls of Congress that afternoon.”

Echoing the opinion of the Colorado Supreme Court, Bellows said Trump spread lies of election fraud to “inflame his supporters and direct them to the Capitol to prevent … the peaceful transfer of power.”

“The weight of the evidence makes clear that Mr. Trump was aware of the tinder laid by his multi-month effort to delegitimize a democratic election, and then chose to light a match,” Bellows wrote.

She continued, “Principles of free speech do not override the clear command of Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment, namely that those who orchestrate violence against our government may not wield the levers of its power.”

One of Trump’s key defenses in the 14th Amendment cases centers on his claim that the vague provision doesn’t apply to the presidency. But Bellows rejected that argument and concluded that the “history of Section Three firmly supports the idea that it covers the presidency.”

“In sum, the text, history, and context of Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment make clear that it covers the President, and that it is a qualification enforceable by the states,” she wrote.

A 50-year old man, Yusuf Bako, will be spending the rest of his life in prison custody for luring and defiling a 4-year old girl inside a Mosque in Bauchi State.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that it was the judgment of the Bauchi State High Court, which found the suspect, Bako, guilty of rape and sentenced him accordingly under the Criminal Laws of the State.

The incident happened inside the Mosque in Bauchi metropolis in 2020 and the suspect was arrested by the Police operatives from the Bauchi Command, who found him culpable after interrogation and consequently charged before the Court for the offence.

The little victim suffered her fate during the COVID-19 lockdown and the convict was arrested and charged before the Court, where he faced trial and was convicted for the alleged offence.

During the trial, the Court discovered that the convict had previously been jailed twice for similar rape offences. Thus, the Court gave him maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

The Director of Public Prosecution, Barrister Sha’awanatu Yusuf, confirmed the conviction and emphasised the Ministry’s commitment to justice for rape victims and the enforcement of the VAPP Law in the state.
She also called on parents to support authorities in prosecuting offenders to serve as deterrent to prevent others who might want to commit similar crimes in future.

Guinness World Record for Longest Cooking Marathon broken again [Image source: Yalelo]
Mama D, a Ugandan chef broke the record on Thursday, 28 December 2023, cooking for more than 119 hours, 57 minutes, a record set by the Irish chef, Alan Fisher in November.

At the time, Fisher had broken the record set by Nigerian chef, Hilda Baci who cooked for 93 hours, 11 minutes in May this year.

Baci’s shattering of the record this year immediately shut it to new heights of fame, with multiple chefs looking to break the record. At the time, Baci had received massive support from celebrities, influencers and politicians with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos and the music sensation Tiwa Savage all dropping at the location in Lagos to show support. All through that weekend in May, Baci rose to the top of the Twitter trend table in the country.

Since breaking the record, Baci has attained new heights of fame, landing huge endorsements with brands like Gino and Woodsscope, a Nigerian kitchen appliances and accessories manufacturing company.

Though Mama D, the Uganda chef, has broken Fisher record, her status as the Longest Cooking Marathon record holder will not be official until she is certified by the Guinness World Record, the organisation that has been in charge of conferring certificates to record holders since its inception in 1955.

Mama D plans to cook till the new year. If she succeeds she would have been cooked non-stop for 9 days.

She did well.
And if she was me, I will continue to do it.

Trust me you did make her to be a shadow of herself and lavishing -carrying sidechivks with the money if she did open up about it .

You're such a disgruntled element, sorry to say. At least sometimes you have to pretend and stand by the truth, okay.
