I was chatting with a friend and she was talking to me about how the
house would be so dirty sometimes and she wouldn’t just feel like
cleaning.  She would instead 'want to' sleep or watch TV, but
unfortunately, it’s something that she 'has to' do.As human beings, most
times we don’t want to be stressed, we all just want to sleep, have fun, relax,
play, hang out, party etc. These are things we 'want to do' and there are so
many things we wouldn’t feel like doing, especially when it comes to hard work,
setting goals, following through, making sacrifices etc. but unfortunately these are
things that we 'have to do' to remain relevant and be successful.Relating this to careers, goals or even aspirations in life, we just
find out that most times we prefer to remain where we are. Quite a lot
of people find it difficult getting out of the status quo. Many times
you discover a lot of people are limited because they are not
intrinsically motivated, most people want to be motivated or pushed by
other people before they can take the next big step in their lives which
would take them to the next level.

What amazes me most times in issues like this is that my friend actually
knows that the right thing to do is to clean the house, like I know that
the right thing to do is to register for that certification or do that
MBA because that new credential is what can get you out of the
limitation you find yourself in and take you to the next level. It’s
just something that 'you have to do' which might require you to reduce
your sleep in order to read or cut down on a holiday splurge to pay for
an exam that will take you to the next level. Most times we need to note that
the 'HAVE TO' are the activities that lead towards success and it is essential that
we are able to differentiate between the two to determine the actions to take, not
only in our careers but in every aspect of our lives.
Be responsible- Remember someone might be watching
Being responsible is a topic I like to talk about all the time because
as unbelievable as it may sound, just being responsible can take you to
places that you can never imagine you can get to.

Responsibility is a skill, you learn it. Someone said the decision to be
lazy or get up early everyday is taken by you. It all boils down to your
own conscious decision, choosing your own actions and words.
Responsibility reflects in the decisions we take in our everyday lives
from when you wake up in the morning to take a bath, going to work, how
we work and relate with our colleagues, bosses and subordinates, getting
early to work, following your schedules, meeting your timelines,
ensuring savings, pursuing career and personal development etc. This
list can go on and on. Being able to show responsibility in every little
thing produces good results. A colleague of mine was sharing with me on
how he found in the dustbin an envelope of money in the US dollar
currency and he returned it to his boss. He said to me that his boss was
surprised the he found and returned the money. Since then, he keeps
recommending him for amazing opportunities that he is not sure he even
deserves. It pays to be responsible.

For me, it is television. I loooooooooove TV!!!!! I always tell myself
that it helps me unwind and relax after a long hard day so the hours I
spend watching tv are slotted under the section of 'work/life balance'
or 'helping Ope relax and prevent her from pulling her hair from the
roots.' Watching tv is not necessarily bad, but its effects on me became
glaring after a recent decision by my husband that cable network would
not be subscribed to during the school term. You see, my daughter picked
some of my habits and always found it difficult to focus on school work
as long as a tv is switched on in the house. This drove my husband's
insistence on no cable tv. I was very upset because I love medical drama
and law drama series. However, I noticed that during the 'down' periods,
I read more literature, write more articles, service more constructive
relationships, in short, I was more productive during those long hours I
had previously allocated to 'unwinding in front of the tv.' This was a
serious wake up call for me.

never spent time analyzing this statement because I never had to,
anyway, the object of my discourse is 'The Money Value of Time.'

A few days ago, I dropped my children in school and was on my way when
I came across an NNPC mega station. The queue for fuel was as long as
the eyes could see and as endless as one could imagine. I needed fuel,
but drove by and went to another which sold at N180 per liter.......No
queue by the way!!! I truly started to wonder how a child of God
possessing invaluable time with a purpose in life would spend two (2)
days on a queue just to save an extra N35 per liter!!!!!!! Some people
will eventually get a turn and buy twenty (20) liters, thus saving a
mere N700!!!!!!! I understand that N700 is 2 dollars as such, can feed
the poorest families in Nigeria for 2 days, but, if you own a car, or
drive a car, you do not fall into that income bracket in anyway.
Wasting all that time on a queue is wasting a part of your life.

A man's entire life is a totality of seconds, minutes and hours,
consequently, what you spend your time doing is what you are spending
your life on. Time is valuable. Any period of time allowed to pass by
without being put to constructive use is time wasted. Do you know how
much money you could have generated in 2 days? Do you know what
beneficial relationships you could have developed in 48 hours? To
spend it wasted on a fuel queue is ridiculous to me!!!! Any period of
time that is not invested in generating profit or investing in
ministry/people/relationships/making a better YOU etc is a colossal
waste of time.

Time is valuable and irredeemable, let us invest our time wisely.
