Health / Rhnull, The Rarest Blood Type On Earth, Has Been Called The "Golden Blood" by BisQuit(m): 5:55am On Jan 25, 2018
A, B and O.

These are the most common blood types. The ones we all know. Then there's one called the Bombay Blood group which is considered extremely rare. It was discovered in Mumbai in 1952, hence the name, and is said to show up in 4 people out of a million.

Now that's rare. But what if there was one which was even rarer?

Introducing, Rhnull or the cooler name - Golden Blood.

Why is it called so? Because it is the rarest blood type in the entire world. So rare that only around 40 people
are recorded to have it and there are only 9 donors in the world.

We all have red blood cells and those cells have around 342 antigens. These antigens produce antibodies. A person's blood type is determined on the basis of the presence or absence of these antigens.

160 of 342 blood group antigens are prevalent. Meaning, most people have it. Your blood type is considered rare if you lack antigens that 99% of the people are positive for. If you somehow lack an antigen that 99.99% are positive for, your blood type is extremely rare.

In 1974, ten-year-old Thomas went to the University Hospital of Geneva to get an infection checked out.

There are 35 recognised blood group systems.

Thomas didn't seem to have any. Forget negative or positive, he had no Rh antigens to speak of. Technically, he shouldn't have been alive. Shocked, the doctor sent him to Amsterdam and Paris for further blood tests. It was confirmed. Thomas had Rhnull blood type.

The thing about Rhnull is that if you have it, get ready to be approached by scientists and doctors alike. Purely because they want to study it further. Rhnull can be the true universal donor group for anyone who has a rare blood type. It's life saving capability is humongous.

Those who have it, have the power to save lives. But should something happen to them, they could be in grave danger. And mixing blood types can be lethal. Since there are so few rare blood types.

If there is blood required for a very rare blood type in a different part of the world, you can't really send it across borders. Take Thomas for example. He actually flies to France to donate due to strict laws. Also, he isn't paid for it. He does so on his own dime.

He first did it when a baby in Geneva needed it.

People with Rhnull blood type can have children and lead a normal family life. They can be mildly aneamic, but that's about it.

But life is different for them. They need to extra careful. Thomas doesn't travel to countries that don't have modern medical facilities. He carries a card that confirms his Rhnull status, drives very carefully and most of all, he avoids injuries and accidents.

Apparently there are 8 others who donate. But it's hard to say how active they are. Goes without saying, it is the most sought after donor blood group.

For that very reason, doctors hold it in high esteem.

They use it only for very very extreme and rare cases. Because once used, it is almost impossible to replace. Hence, Golden Blood!

Foreign Affairs / The ‘Safest Home In America’ Is Up For Sale by BisQuit(m): 9:17am On Nov 14, 2017
• The house is located just outside of Atlanta
• It has eight bedrooms, 14 bathrooms and countless secrets

The Rice House is for sale and the place is perfect for a Bond villain.

Listed at a reasonable $14.7 million, the Alpharetta, Georgia home includes eight bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, three kitchens, elevators, a private museum, indoor shooting range, and a wine cellar.

Besides a private theater, bowling alley, and infinity swimming pool — because who doesn’t have those amenities in their homes these days — the Rice House boasts ballistic bedroom doors that can withstand fire from an AK-47 assault rifle, a car vault big enough to hold 30 vehicles and a secret entrance concealed by a waterfall.

But wait, there’s more…

“Secret doors lead to a 15,000-square-foot bunker in which an embattled owner could conceivably hole up for years, with off-grid power and water drawn from three artesian wells drilled 1,000 feet into the ground.”

It’s no wonder the home has been dubbed “the safest home in America.”

The owner of Rice House spent six years and over $30 million building the massive 36,000-square-foot estate.

The entrepreneur selling the compound told the realtor that he built the home for his son but the kid has no interesting in living at Rice House. Typical kid.

If you wait long enough, you can’t get the safest home in America for an even better deal. The original listing price was over $17 million. The house could soon be priced to move.

Here are a few interior shots of the house built for a Bond villain.

Science/Technology / Robot Sophia: Meet The First Robot In History To Become A Citizen Of A Country by BisQuit(m): 4:10pm On Nov 10, 2017
Sophia is the first robot in history to be granted robot citizenship of a country, the robot who became a citizen of Saudi Arabia hardly a week ago has taken robotics one step closer to being infused into our daily lives.

Sophia was created by Hanson Robotics and she’s truly one of a kind, the focus area is currently on her intelligence. The other parts of her body such as her legs and hands (though her hands work pretty well already) have not been fully developed, but all that will be looked into with subsequent upgrades.

Sophia

Sophia is a humanoid robot that was granted the first ever Saudi citizenship for a robot. The CEO of Hanson Robotics explains the idea behind Sophia is to build the full human experience in a robot, pushing boundaries and making robots that can really understand us and care about us.

Her AI (Artificial Intelligence) was made using SingularityNet, the AI is basically the brain of the robot, and the work put into SingularityNet is simply amazing. She’s currently able to express over a thousand human emotions, and she can engage in intelligent conversations with humans effortlessly.

Her Looks

Sophia was designed to look like Audrey Hepburn. Audrey Kathleen Ruston (full name) was a British actress and humanitarian who died at the age of 63 due to Appendiceal cancer. Sophia embodies Hepburn’s classic beauty: porcelain skin, a slender nose, high cheekbones, an intriguing smile, and deeply expressive eyes that seem to change color with the light.

Sophia At The United Nations

Sophia was even interviewed by the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed. This interview took place at the UN General Assembly Second Committee and the Economic and Social Council joint meeting on “The future of everything – sustainable development in the age of rapid technological change.”

2017 future investment initiative,Riyadh

Speaking at the 2017 future investment initiative in riyadh, sophia demonstrated her quick wit, when questioned about the threat of artificial intelligence.

‘you’ve been reading too much elon musk and watching too many hollywood movies,’ retorted the robot. ‘don’t worry, if you’re nice to me, I’ll be nice to you. treat me as a smart input output system.’

Elon Musk shot back replying on twitter: ‘just feed it the godfather movies as input. what’s the worst that could happen?’.

Irony Of Citizenship

The irony of the citizenship is that Saudi Arabia is well known for having some of the worst women rights policies, it was only until late this year women were allowed to drive in the country.

Hanson Robotics

Hanson Robotics are the masterminds behind Sophia, the company creates amazingly expressive and lifelike robots that build trusted and engaging relationships with people through conversation. They focus on building robots that teach, serve, entertain, and will in time come to truly understand and caring about humans.

The company aims at creating a better future for humanity by infusing artificial intelligence with kindness and empathy, cultivated through meaningful interactions between robots and the individuals whose lives they touch. They envision that their robots will eventually evolve to become super intelligent genius machines that can help us solve the most challenging problems we face here in the world.

Babies aren't the only ones who love breasts, which is why there are so many products out there designed to make them bigger, firmer and less wrinkled. Here are some of the strangest breast products on the market.

1. Electro-Shock Breast Massager

It's shocking how far some people will go to get bigger breasts -in this case, literally.

The Sunmas Breast Massager uses TENS pain-relief technology in a completely unproven manner to "stimulate female hormone and pregnant hormone on the breast. Wake up breast-grow, promote adolescaria breast rear, recover the prolapse and deformation caused by suckle." They also claim their device can help prevent breast lumps. With a device that promises to do all that, it's a miracle there isn't one of these in every home in America.

Foreign Affairs / Israeli Wins Judo Gold In UAE, Which Refuses To Play Anthem, Raise Flag by BisQuit(m): 7:13am On Oct 28, 2017
BisQuit:

An Israeli judoka won a gold medal on Thursday at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam judo tournament, but had to sing his own private “Hatikvah” because the organizers refused to play the Israeli national anthem.

He also had to celebrate his victory under the International Judo Federation’s flag, because the emirate banned the display of Israeli symbols.

Tournament organizers did not play Israel’s national anthem as Tal Flicker stood on the podium after receiving his medal in the men’s under-66 kilograms (145 pounds) category.

With the medal around his neck, Flicker sang his own “Hatikvah” while the International Judo Federation’s (IJF) anthem played in the background.

On the women’s side, Gili Cohen won bronze in the under-52 kilograms (114 pounds) class. The Israeli flag was not flown on her behalf either.

The entire Israeli team was required to compete without any Israeli identifying symbols, and had been told before the tournament that there would be no acknowledgement of their home country — a discriminatory policy imposed solely on the Israeli competitors.

Flicker said later that he made up his mind to sing his own “Hatikvah” on the podium from “the moment that I won the gold.”

“Israel is my country, and I’m proud to be Israeli,” he said, speaking to Channel 2 news from his hotel room. “The anthem that they played of the world federation was just background noise,” he said. “I was singing ‘Hatikvah’ from my heart.

“I’m proud of my country,” he said again. “The whole world knows that we’re from Israel, knows who we represent. The fact that they hid our flag, it’s just a patch on our flag.”

Asked whether he’d had reservations about competing in a tournament that would not recognize him and his colleagues as Israelis, Flicker said he had focused solely on winning a medal. Now that he’d done so, “I’m extremely happy.”

Ahead of the tournament on Monday, Flicker wrote on Facebook that even without the flag, “everyone in the world knows where we are from and what country we represent.”

“I am the most proud in the world to be Israeli,” he added.

The Israeli contestants were barred from wearing Israeli symbols on their uniforms at the tournament and were listed as representing the International Judo Federation.

The ban on Israeli symbols came despite the IJF’s demand before the tournament that the UAE treat Israeli athletes equally.

A letter from the IJF to the president of the UAE Judo Federation said “all delegations, including the Israeli delegation, shall be treated absolutely equally in all aspects, without any exception.”

It highlighted the body’s core ideals that “every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind.”

The letter was sent to the World Jewish Congress, which represents over 100 Jewish communities, and had asked the IJF to intervene and “protect the rights of the Israeli national judo team and keep the spirit of sport free of political discrimination.”

There was no comment Wednesday from the UAE, which has no diplomatic relations with Israel.

Muslim and Arab states or athletes often boycott Israeli competitors. An Egyptian judoka refused to shake hands with his Israeli opponent at the Rio Olympics last year. Tunisia’s tennis federation ordered the country’s top player to withdraw from a match against an Israeli opponent at a tournament in 2013.

Culture and Sport Minister Miri Regev said it was of “utmost importance” that her country’s athletes display the flag and sing the national anthem at international competitions. She said boycotting the competition would only “play into the hands of those refusing to recognize our existence,” and would hinder Israel’s future sporting achievements.

Israeli judokas were also banned from displaying any Israeli symbols at a 2015 tournament in Abu Dhabi.

Autos / Yamaha Niken: Finally A High Performance Tilting 3-wheel Beast For The Roads by BisQuit(m): 10:03am On Oct 25, 2017
Yamaha is about to unveil a high-performance, sports-oriented tilting 3-wheeler called the Niken, which appears to be a full production bike. This thing is going to be absolutely awesome to ride, with surreal levels of grip and confidence at the front end. But can it wheelie?

2018 Yamaha Niken: built on the MT09 platform
2018 Yamaha Niken: this'll get you noticed on the road
2018 Yamaha Niken: tilting 3-wheeler with genuine performance potential
2018 Yamaha Niken: OK forget the bike, I wanna ride that road.

Ever since we first tested the awesome Piaggio MP3, I've been 100 percent sold on the idea of tilting 3-wheelers.

With two wheels at the front, grip feels just about unlimited, stability is frankly amazing and the riding experience feels something akin to a regular motorcycle that counter steers with ease – except you can lean more or less as far over as you like, no matter what the road conditions are like, in total confidence.

I came away from riding the MP3 thinking "if only somebody would make one of these with a bigger, hairier set of balls, we'd have something really special on our hands. And everywhere else."

Yamaha has been teasing us for a decade now with the Tesseract and the OR2T, which extended the concept to include twin rear wheels as well. Then came the MWT-9 3-wheeler concept back in 2015, which has now been developed into a full-scale production machine in the 2018 Yamaha Niken.

Details are scant at this point, but it looks like it'll run the excellent, high performance and super torquey inline triple engine from the MT09 platform, a series of bikes I love without shame or reservation. Length is 2,150 mm and width is 885 mm, making it 7 cm wider than the MT09's 815 mm, but still hopefully relevant in traffic.

Where the MP3 looked and felt like a humble, friendly scooter, the Niken is designed from the ground up to look like a frickin' beast. Its wide, flat, angry front panelling looks a bit like a squashed Triumph 675 fairing, and the distinctive twin forks supporting each 15-inch front wheel look absolutely wicked.

If anything can get your typical stodgy, conservative biker to get over the stigma of riding a 3-wheeler, it'll be this beast. And my experience with the MP3 is that pretty much everyone who rides one will understand its unique advantages immediately. Massive cornering grip will be one, but it should also stop harder and more securely than any two-wheeler on the market.
2018 Yamaha Niken: twin forks on either side offer rigidity

Those small wheels will help make this thing turn super quick around town, but it'll be really interesting to see how they handle fast sport riding and high lean angles.

How far over can the Niken lean before the outside wheel lifts off the deck? Why the twin forks on each side? Does it wheelie? Who knows, but we'll have full details from EICMA on November 6, and this thing looks absolutely production-ready.

Bring. It. On!

Foreign Affairs / Zenith Defy Lab: World's Most Accurate Mechanical Watch by BisQuit(m): 9:47am On Oct 25, 2017
For all their advances, mechanical watches haven't changed fundamentally in over 340 years. Now Swiss watchmaker Zenith has broken new ground by creating an "oscillator" that replaces the conventional spring escapement with a precisely engineered silicon disc. Zenith claims this makes its Defy Lab the world's most accurate mechanical watch.

The Zenith Defy Lab at its public debut
The Zenith Defy Lab being delivered by drone at its debut
The Zenith Defy Lab came in a limited edition of 10 units
The Zenith Defy Lab is the first fundamental change to watch design since 1675

Though portable mechanical clocks have been around since the early 16th century, it wasn't until 1675 that it was possible to build what we would now recognize as a watch.

A couple of decades prior, in 1656, the Dutch scientist and inventor Christiaan Huygens came up with the first precision timepiece when he invented the pendulum clock, which uses the period of a swinging weight against a toothed escapement wheel to regulate the fall of a weight. This was so precise that more advanced versions were the standard for timekeeping until the 1930s.

The problem was that pendulum clocks are the exact opposite of portable. The first portable timepieces made in Germany in the 1530s used a coiled mainspring for power, but the use of tiny chains wrapped around a spiraled cone was so imprecise that these contraptions only had an hour hand.

Looking at the Zenith Defy Lab watch, it's obvious that something else is at work. Instead of the conventional spring balance, the movement visible behind the dial seems to vibrate like some powerful machine that's on the verge of exploding into bits. That's because the spring balance has been replaced by Zenith's new oscillator.

Unlike a conventional balance mechanism made of about 30 components, the new oscillator is a single, monolithic skeletal disc 0.5 mm thick. It's made of monocrystalline silicon coated with a layer of silicon oxide worked to tolerances finer than a human hair by Deep Reactive Ion Etching (DRIE), which uses plasma make deep, precise etchings.

Zenith is a bit coy about exactly how the oscillator works, but Hackaday says that the geometry of the disc is broken up into a pattern of vanes and springs along with two tiny teeth that transfer forces back and forth between the oscillator and the rest of the movement. Three blades act as springs while shorter blades create the rotational force that turns the watch's gears. Meanwhile, another set of blades dampens any vertical motion.

The makers of the Defy Lab say that, unlike a balance, the oscillator needs no lubrication, balancing, or calibration and is insensitive to temperature gradients, gravity, and magnetic fields. It beats at 15 Hertz with an amplitude of +/- 6 degrees (opposed to a conventional movement's 300 degrees) providing an accuracy of within 0.3 seconds per day. For comparison, a chronometer certification requires an accuracy of 10 seconds per day.

This frequency is so fast that the watch has a permanent-running seconds hand and, despite the high frequency, the movement has a 60-hour power reserve and it remains accurate even with 95 percent of the mainspring expended. In addition, the Defy Lab has chronometer certification by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, meets the ISO-3159 thermal standards, and ISO-764 magnetic criteria to 1,100 Gauss.

The Defy Lab uses the 148 component, 18-jewel Zenith Oscillator Calibre ZO 342 movement powered by an oscillating weight adorned with the "Côtes de Genève" motif. The dial has a simple display of hours, minutes, and central seconds, and the movement is visible through the anti-reflective sapphire crystals on the front and reverse.

The case for the Defy Lab is also worthy of comment. Instead of the usual metals, it's made of Aeronith – the world's lightest aluminum composite material. Though it looks like solid metal, it's actually an aluminum sponge filled with a UV-resistant polymer that makes it 2.7 times lighter than titanium and 10 percent lighter than carbon composites. The result is a light, strong case water resistant to 5 ATM. It's secured by a black rubber strap with alligator leather coating and a titanium double folding clasp.

If you're looking to buy a Defy Lab, you're out of luck. Only ten of the US$30,000 units were made in ten different versions, but these were all pre-sold before the watch's September debut. However, Zenith says that it is working on serial production with a new design.

The video below introduces the Zenith Defy Lab.

Artist Jeffrey Michael Samudosky recently transformed a huge fallen redwood into an amazing giant octopus sculpture. In the progress pictures below you can see the incredible transformation and how the octopus slowly takes shape. To create the artwork Samudosky used a variety of tools including chainsaws, dremels and chisels.

Born and raised in Shelton, Connecticut, Jeff studied art and photography in high school. After graduating, he traveled the continent as an Outward Bound instructor, ice climber, and whitewater rafting guide. In Jackson Hole, Wyoming he trained as an Alpine mountaineering guide and became certified as a wilderness emergency medical technician. That was also the place where his life changed drastically.

A crash while snowboarding left Jeff with a broken back and no feeling in his legs. However, after eight months of painful recovery, Jeff regained the feeling in his legs and was back on his feet. Refusing let his accident stop him from being the energetic man that he is, he decided to get back on his snowboard.

While on his way to the mountain in Vermont he noticed some wood carvings along the side of a road, and he thought, “I could do that.” And so, JMS Wood Sculpture was born in 1998. His business has allowed Jeff to live all over the country and travel all over the world participating in competitions and he continues to be a trusted friend throughout the carving community.

Phones / 10 Things You Didn't Know You Agreed To Via Terms Of Service by BisQuit(m): 6:55am On Oct 19, 2017
The terms of service, also known as the document you're supposed to read before signing up for a site or platform, is a treasure trove of legal guidelines, rules and permissions that few people really care about.

But there are a few things you're agreeing to, hidden within the jargon, that might change the way you use the web. Some permissions, like keeping personal information, protecting copyrights and preventing impersonation, are well-known and relatively innocuous. That said, there's a chance you're violating a term of service without even realizing it.

Here are 10 things you didn't realize you agreed to in the social network terms of service you didn't read, but we did.

Facebook

1. Facebook has permission to use your photos and videos for whatever it wants.

Have you ever wanted to see that awesome sunset picture you took or a funny video of your cats in a Facebook ad? No? Well, too bad, because when you sign up for Facebook, you give it an expansive royalty-free license to use anything you post that could be considered intellectual property.

You still own all of your content, but Facebook is allowed to use it and give other people the right to use it, too. The only way to revoke the license is by deleting the content from Facebook.

If it seems out of line, it's actually pretty commonplace among other social media sites. Twitter, Instagram and Google all have similar clauses in their terms.

2. You can't use Facebook if you're a convicted sex offender.

This one is pretty straightforward. If you've been convicted of a sex crime, you aren't allowed to register for Facebook.

3. You're required to keep your contact information up to date.

Facebook requires all users to keep their profiles updated with any changes to their contact information so it can make sure your account is kept secure. While it doesn't specify a timetable for email addresses, the terms say you need to update your cellphone number within 48 hours of making the change.

Twitter

4. How you explore Twitter, and how you got there

Twitter's privacy policy allows the company to track "your IP address, browser type, operating system, the referring web page, pages visited, location, your mobile carrier, device and application IDs, search terms, and cookie information." Google does virtually the same thing.

5. You're not allowed to squat on a username.

Are you planning to set up a Twitter account for your kid to use when he's old enough? That's not allowed, according to Twitter's terms of service. Twitter typically deletes most accounts within six to nine months of inactivity, so it's unlikely you'd be able to get away with it anyway.

Instagram

6. You're not allowed to post sexually suggestive content.

This one might seem like a no-brainer, but it's not just nudity that's banned. The rule itself isn't very specific, but its sets a presumably lower benchmark than similar rules from Facebook and Twitter limiting offensive content.

7. You're not supposed to send ideas to Instagram, but if the company actually reads them and likes them, it'll use them.

Instagram's terms outline the company's policy "not to accept or consider content, information, ideas, suggestions or other materials other than those we have specifically requested." But, there's a caveat: If, for some reason, your brilliant idea catches the eye of a higher-up, then Instagram can use it and not give you a cent.

LinkedIn

8. You can't add anyone you don't actually know.

If you're familiar with the networking platform, you'll know that you have to specify how you know someone before you invite her to connect on LinkedIn. If you can't offer a mutual school or workplace, or don't have an email address linked to her account, LinkedIn won't let you connect.

But proving your acquaintance with a potential connection isn't just a spam roadblock; it's written into LinkedIn's terms, too. That said, plenty of people violate it without caring. Networking is cut-throat sometimes, man.

9. Your profile can't promote escort or prostitution services — even if they're legal where you live.

Let's say you're the proprietor of a lawful business that pairs clients with escorts for, uh, intimate companionship. Don't bother networking on LinkedIn, because that's against the rules.

10. You're not allowed to lie.

It's said that honesty is the best policy. For LinkedIn, honesty is policy. The network's user agreement bans users from adding inaccurate information to their profiles. It's also usually easy for prospective employers to catch, so it's not worth it in the first place.

A former office worker turned tattoo addict has covered 90% of his body, including his eyes.

Tattboy Holden, who changed his name legally in 2014, claims he was left bed bound and in pain day and night after suffering side effects from a routine operation in 2000. The 48-year-old found relief from chronic pain in going under the tattooist's needle. He has since invested nearly $90,000 and 1,000 hours in body modification. The colorful character from, Adelaide admits his 100 head-to-toe inkings are a stain on his mainstream job prospects.

If you think his eye tattoos must be his most painful, he also has a tattoo on his penis.
