Nairaland / General / Top 7 Things To Know About The National Water Resources Bill 2020 by BizWatch: 9:02am On Oct 06, 2020
In 2017, the federal government transmitted a bill on water resource control and management to the National Assembly for consent. The billed hit the rocks, as it was stepped down. Nearly one and a half years after, those backing the bill, seeing that their initial obstacles in the legislature are out of their way and the body language of the leadership of the current National Assembly appeared friendlier to the Executive than their predecessors, reintroduced the bill for passage. The sponsors of the bill reckon their stars might align this time to get the contentious bill passed.

Sadly, just like in its first introduction, the bill is currently ripping through the legislative arm of government, leaving in its trail a polarized lawmaking institution and an anxious citizenry. Through this bill, the federal government is seeking to accrue more powers to itself by owning and controlling all the water resources, both surface and underground bodies of water, found in Nigeria.

At a time when there is a clamour for devolution of powers and resource control, the federal government, like Oliver Twist, wants more, owing to its dwindling revenues from oil. Opponents of the government also accuse it of having veiled its failed RUGA aspiration in this new bill. Critics question the FG’s justification for seeking to gain control of the nation’s water resources, when everything in sight under the control of the FG, such as crude oil exploration licensing, has not in any way improved the economic conditions of the host communities. They argue that the irresponsible exploration activities of the IOCs has largely gone unchecked by the government.

Nairaland / General / Top 7 Things To Know About The FIRS Self Certification Exercise by BizWatch: 2:08pm On Sep 23, 2020
The Federal Inland Revenue Service has informed non-residents and those with tax residence in more than one country to complete its self-certification forms. The tax agency has advised that the form can be downloaded from its site.

The Federal Government came under serious criticism after it admitted it had misinformed the public on the exercise and has since deleted the post from its Twitter page.

A former Director-General of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms in Nigeria, Joe Abah, in a tweet accused both the federal government and FIRS of issuing misleading information to the public:

The self-certification exercise is to enable Nigeria fulfil its OECD treaty obligation, which requires signatory countries to gather and report financial information of foreign nationals to their country of origin for the purpose of tax compliance and in return receive similar information on Nigerians from those countries.

Here are the Top 7 Things to know about the self-certification exercise:

#1. The self-certification is not for all account holders in financial institutions, as erroneously put out by the federal government previously.

Nairaland / General / Top 7 Reasons Why 2020 Has Been Nigeria’s Toughest Economic Year by BizWatch: 9:17am On Sep 22, 2020
Depending on what side of the spectrum you are standing on, the year 2020 has been both eventful and challenging for households, businesses and governments all around the world. The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed how volatile the global economy is. Coming down home, Nigeria is witnessing a downturn in its economic fortunes, owing to the fall in the price of crude oil, which is the mainstay of Africa’s largest economy. The federal government is in dire straits, hence its aggressive drive to expand its sources of revenue. Sadly, the Nigerian economy is heavily dependent on importation, and this places serious pressure on the local economy and currency.

The implementation of new economic policies is beginning to negatively impact the living conditions of Nigerians, and the citizens have expressed displeasure over the new multiple financial burdens they must endure, even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With no significant stimulus packages from government, households have had to rely on savings to get by, some businesses were forced to cut down their workforce, some who survived the workplace fire did so with varying degrees of burns on their pay envelopes. Many argue that the timing of the federal government’s implementation of its new economic policies is ill-advised and will worsen the country’s inflation situation, as the burden of these new fees and utility charges will be passed down to end-users.

Let us take a look at the Top 7 Reasons why 2020 has been Nigeria’s toughest economic year, in a long while:

Diri benefitted from the disqualification of David Lyon to become governor of the home state of former president Goodluck Jonathan. In arriving at its decision, the Tribunal faulted INEC’s decision to exclude the candidate of the Advanced National Democratic Party (ANDP), Lucky King-George, from participating in the November 16 governorship election.

Here are Top 7 things to know about Diri’s election nullification:

#1: Tribunal Dismisses 3 Petitions Challenging Diri’s Victory
Bayelsa State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal dismissed three petitions filed by the Alliance for Democracy (AD), the United People’s Congress (UPC) and the Liberation Movement (LM) against Douye Diri’s election. The petitions were based on alleged forgery of declaration of age and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate.

#2: Tribunal Nullifies Diri’s Election

The Bayelsa State Tribunal nullified the election of Douye Diri six months after he was sworn in as governor of the state. The 3-man tribunal panel headed by Justice Ibrahim Sirajo voted 2 to 1 in favour of nullifying the election. The election was cancelled based on a petition filed by the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP), which argued its unlawfully exclusion from contesting in the November 16, 2019 governorship election. Two days before the ruling, the tribunal dismissed three other petitions filed by different parties against the election of Mr Diri of the People’s Democratic Party.

Agriculture / Unlocking Africa’s Agribusiness Potential With Platform Thinking by BizWatch: 12:35pm On Jul 02, 2020
Ecosystems and platforms within agriculture

The African continent is home to what is considered a huge growth opportunity – agriculture. With 65% of the world’s available uncultivated arable land, potential exists for African countries to reach their developmental goals and become major players in the global food system.

Despite the continent’s abundance in arable land and water resources, its economies and communities are yet to reap the benefits. Agribusinesses in Africa still face serious challenges and as a result, the sector remains largely untapped.

With poor supply chain channels, inadequate infrastructure, poor access to markets, and a lack of access to know-how of modern farming practices, tools and equipment, smallholder farmers, who contribute 70-80% of the continent’s food production, cannot migrate from subsistence to commercial farming.

The developed world now considers technology as an essential enabler to modern day farming, and without transformation, sub-Saharan Africa risks falling even further behind on the competitive scale. This while the sector remains an important driver of economic growth and employment on the continent. It then becomes critical to consider ways to support and develop what is seen as Africa’s rural last mile. Technology and mechanisation have proven to enhance productivity, yields, cost reduction at scale, improve quality and farm profitability.

While smallholder farmers remain an important grouping, it is one that is typically overlooked by many financial institutions. Many have tried to crack this market but have been unsuccessful in their efforts.

Nairaland / General / COVID-19 Lessons – A Bird’s Eye View by BizWatch: 2:30pm On Jun 24, 2020
Gradually, the COVID-inspired lockdown has begun easing up. As we return to normalcy, the question is this: When all this is over; when sickness and deaths subside, when ventilators and face masks are back in storerooms, when health workers no longer fear for their lives in the line of duty, and when families and friends gather once again; what lessons would we have learnt as individuals or organisations?

COVID-19 has shaken even the strongest of us, raging beyond ideology and boundaries. However, despite the uncertainties, some individuals and organisations have borne great responsibility for the health and wellbeing of others in the country. They have given support in different ways: through money, resources, medical supplies, and generally lent a helping hand.

One organisation whose intervention efforts brings a lot to the fore is the Interswitch Group. The group in many ways changed the narrative on how Nigerian businesses respond to global issues. They redefined partnerships and demonstrated the importance of technology. From their concerted efforts, here are some of the lessons we could glean from them:

Nairaland / General / Meet Quinn And Cahill: The Two Men Behind The Company That Got A $9 Billion... by BizWatch: 12:04pm On Jul 08, 2019
On February 15, 2015, members of the Irish music scene gathered in Dublin to pay their last respects to Michael Quinn, a long-time music impresario.

Quinn was a well-known and colourful character. He partied and hob-nobbed with the who’s who in music, from the American band ‘The Supremes’ to the Irish folk band ‘The Dubliners’, until his death.

Yet, it wasn’t the music stars who really attracted attention at the funeral; it was the large number of Nigerians in attendance, along with a Nigerian TV crew, that turned the heads of those gathered to say their farewells to Quinn.

Nigeria has, of course, seen its fair share of larger-than-life characters, but Michael Quinn deserves an honourable mention on any list.

Travel / Top 7 Tips For First-time Air Travellers by BizWatch: 8:25pm On Mar 07, 2019
Traveling by air is proven to be one of the easiest and safest means of transportation from one point to another.

While some find it exciting, unfortunately, some travelers have had several bad and frustrating experiences due to one reason or the other, especially the first-timers.

#1. Consult a Genuine Travelling Agent

This is the initial and most important stage. The success of your trip depends solely on how well you are able to deliver on this stage.

A traveling agent will ensure that all documentation concerns about your trip are handled appropriately and timely.

Documentations ranging from visa application, interview, invitation letter (if necessary), purchasing of air ticket(s) and others will be taken care of, with your cooperation, by the agent.

Great caution should be taken to avoid contracting a fake agent.

#2. Familiarize Yourself with the Airlines/Airport Luggage Policies

Doing this will save you the stress of taking along with you prohibited items to the airport.

Once prohibited items are discovered inside any of your luggage, you will be asked to remove and discard them as you will not be allowed to fly with them.
