Music/Radio / UYICITI Disturbs The Streets Of Benin In UPPER Sakponba by Blog66: 1:53pm On Jul 20
Famous Street Song Writter And Exciting Artist Who Hail From The Acient City Of Benin City, Is Back With An Impressive Hit Single Dubbed Upper Sakponba.
Uyi Citi i was born in Upper Sakponba — the most feared place in the city of Benin, Nigeria. In fact, if you told anyone you’re from there, their retina would send an object bearing ax and gun to their brains.
Third East Circular, Upper Sakponba
At first, it was annoying to be perceived as a rough, rugged, arrogant, thuggish — and every word in the cultism vocabulary — kind of person. However, that has all changed. When I learned I could actually make people fear me just be saying I’m from Upper; I built a throne on it.
Damn it! Dia papa!
I’m not a bad boy — at least by the definition of Upper’s badness and baldness. I’ve never puffed smoke out of my nose, except probably the ones from the wrapped sheets of my notebooks. Didn’t we all do that? I’ve never drank alcohol — except if the cup of palm-wine I drank when I was fourteen counts. I’ve never been a member of a cult: yes, I neva carry my leg enta bad gang. Even the unclothedness of a woman I’ve not seen. Wait, scratch it. We all have TVs.
So I am a pretty decent guy. No wonder people tend to experience something like a culture shock when they learn I am from Upper. (Note: Upper is our name for Upper Sakponba. We don’t add the Sakponba because it reduces our Upper).
So did Upper ever influence me?
First, you have to know Upper. Come, let me take you along.
As a child, Upper was just a special place we played football on the streets. The streets I intentionally stepped on my cousin’s ankle and broke it during a five-a-side game. Why? He was such a good footballer, and I was a mess. If not that no one was available, I wouldn’t have made the team. But I loved football. But just like everything else, I sucked at it.
The only thing I was good at was book. I was convinced I was really good at book until I had to write UTME three terrible times before I could gain a place in the hell called a university. Wait, scratch that. They are still with my certificate. Wait, leave it. I am an Upper boy. Werey!
But in Upper, as a teenager, book didn’t matter. Our brothers were tall and strong. We wanted to be like them. We wanted to be strong, so nobody will ever box us down. Everyone achieved this, except me. My bones grew thinner by the day, and the ground swallowed my feet. What was I not shorter than?
So I never felt good. It was terrible not to able to fight on the streets. You had to start carrying weight: two cement blocks with a metal holding them apart. I couldn’t lift it once to save my life. So whenever a fight broke out, I started to cry.
I remember: some people came to our house to fight with my dad. It was a small misunderstanding, but they came with area boys and bottles. I was sitting under the mango tree hanging enemies in the form of bottle covers on the tree. They came, and a fight broke. My brothers and cousins exchanged bottles, rods, and other things with these guys. I was just on the ground, crying.
My dad was stabbed in about six different places. The photograph is still at home. I can’t remember how the fight ended, but I remember a cousin jumping the fence over when he knew the fight was beyond him. That was Upper: they could kill you for just anything. It depended on whose feet you stepped on. So everyone had to be strong. So if you grew up without actually growing strong, you were a waste.
I have not delved into the psychological impact of this on me, and every other Upper boy, but there should be something somewhere. Like people coming into our house to fight my father and brothers. I can’t say I made a resolve that day to be strong, but it sure had an effect on me somewhere. It is this I believe births the idea people have of people from a certain place. Growing in and around an experience does shapen us. It doesn’t matter whether we love or abhor the experience at all, it still has a way of seeping into the very essence of our beings.
In Upper, you had to learn to defend yourself. You don’t sit and let someone (regardless of who the person is) run you down. We watched our sisters grab guys by their collars and threaten to break their heads with 7Up bottles; we watched our aunts tie their wrappers around their waists ready to fight the policeman; we watched our brothers chase NEPA guys out of the street with cutlasses: we watched madness. I didn’t like any of these, but I grew up with that trait — lots of it.
Of course, I am not a violent person — except if words count. The reason is pretty simple: I’ve never been a strong person. I avoided fights like a plague, even though every part of me wanted to. I doubt if anyone gets a greater rush of adrenaline than I do when I am offended. The point is, the experiences we see while growing up get into our very blood. That’s why an average Upper person is not quiet. I was below average, so I grew up quiet. I couldn’t be loud.
I couldn’t do that. I didn’t have the strength. I wasn’t the only feeble-looking timidity of a boy in the area (we call our neighborhood that), but I was apparently the weakest. In our clique, I was the weak link. So it didn’t take long before I was kicked out. Thank God I was kicked out because that clique expanded and became a cult group. From there, they all actually joined a cult group. We had so many things we looked up to, but joining a cult group was top of it.
As teenagers, we saw nothing wrong with it. There was nothing wrong with boozing in an uncompleted building with your guys, and japaing when the police shows. That was what life was. We looked forward to it. Our muscles just had to get bigger, our voice thicker, and chest broader. None of these ever happened to me.
So when my mates started sampling what’s sweet in the middle at 15, I was sucking my thumb behind my mother’s back. Actually, I slept in my mother’s room until I left secondary school. While I had on this masculinity stuff in my head, I never really got into it.
Probably, if things were different, I wouldn’t be writing this. I would either be drawing graffiti on a prison wall or standing on the long queue before God. It’s safe to say, therefore, that the delay in my physical or bodily development saved me from the overwhelming influence of Upper.
Yet, as I grew older, and began to overcome my low self-esteem, my voice started to have courage. I could flare up for the smallest of things, and every part of me — literally — would be vibrating. When angry, my eyes turn red, jaw grumbles, and fingers tremble. I can palpitate the boiling of my blood. After so many incidences, I had to ask myself where all my anger was coming from? It wasn’t what people did or said to me that turned me into a mad man, it was something else. Something else from where I was coming from, UPPER SAKPONBA, Tell me who dey For Benin way nor know Upper Sakponba
