A district court judge in Baltimore has ruled that the Towson University student, Onyekachukwu Chukwuebuk Igwilo accused of raping a fellow student over the weekend will stay in jail.

Baltimore County Police say the incident happened on campus in the suspect’s dorm room.

Police say Igwilo invited the victim to his room at Marshall Hall to watch a movie Sunday afternoon when soon, his unwanted advances toward the woman escalated.

The son of the late comedian, James Iroha, alias Giringori, one of five persons kidnapped along Sagamu-Benin-Ore Expressway last Thursday has narrated their experience in the hands of their abductors.

Iroha, abducted alongside four others narrated their ordeal at the police officers mess in Abeokuta following their rescue by the Ogun State Police Command on Saturday.

According to him, they were made to treck some 30 kilometers into the forest as their abductors whom he described as Fulani herdsmen, humiliated and tortured them with every object available.

However, their respite came when a police surveillance helicopter hovered over the area which unsettled their abductors who abandoned them and ran away.

Iroha said, “Well it’s an experience I wouldn’t wish my enemy because it looks nice for me to stand before you, you needed to see me when I got rescued, I was manhandled, I was roughed, I was tortured name it.”

“It’s horrible where this country is driving at. This gentleman shot for like one hour on the road, until policemen came and they ran away and they took us inside a forest till this morning,,

“I want to use this opportunity to thank the police because the pressure they gave them led us released. If there was no pressure they would have had a field day. Why am I saying this because where we were held, we were put in a slum; we slept in a slum with insects and reptiles; we moved like 30 kilometers inside the jungle where nobody has treaded, they were comfortable there, they have very dangerous weapons.

“They have different ammunitions but the moment we see police helicopter that descended above our head, the kidnappers took to their heels and started being panicky, they knew that some people were on their trail. I also want to appreciate the local hunters, they were always coming out, we used to see them, there are some areas they couldn’t get to because they thought people can’t be there but that was where we were.

“Well from the looks, there are somethings I can’t say because it’s a bit sensitive because the police are on the matter now for the sake of not destroying the evidence. From the language they spoke, they are pure Fulani herdsmen no doubt about it, I wouldn’t want to go further than that.

“They don’t know me, I don’t know them either, I was in a bus, in fact, they told us that they don’t have business with us, but the car they were shooting at drove away with bullet. The guy managed to go with two tyres and they turned back and descended on us, they picked us randomly, we never knew them from Adam, they just said their bullets will not go away they needed someone to pay for it and they took us.”

Public policies are typically the product of tradition, because the quiet familiarity of tradition makes for some semblance of stability, predictability or perhaps safety. But sometimes, tradition can prove to be an inadvertent anchor of error, or it may outlive its usefulness. This seems to be the case with the appointment and tenure of the governors of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

Since the return of democracy in 1999, all the CBN governors have served only one term – and there have been three of them. Mr. Joseph Sanusi declined a second term for personal reasons, particularly his age. Both Prof. Chukwuma Soludo and Mallam Lamido Sanusi were younger and ambitious enough to desire second terms. But for political considerations, they were denied.

Our society grandiloquently allows politics interfere with government action especially on issues of critical national importance. This has had deleterious consequences for our development, leading to wrong decisions taken at the right time or right decisions taken at the wrong time; both resulting In the same outcome, the robbing of Nigerians of unique moments to dig themselves out of the pit of poverty and despair. It now appears that the decision to appoint a CBN governor has again become victim of a treacherous and cynical tradition. This Newspaper believes the time has come to reexamine this practice of instinctively refusing CBN Governors a second term in office regardless of their performance on the job; putting an end to the self-defeating act of subjecting the sensitive position of CBN governor to the merciless caprices of the Nigerian game of political roulette.

All over the world, the office of the central bank governor or chairman is revered and highly institutionalized because it is the face and embodiment of economic stability. A major function of the central bank is the determination and control of the price system, which include inflation rate, interest rate and exchange rate; these are the determinants of every economy. A major adverse change in any of them will spell doom.

So the head of every central bank is carefully chosen and rarely relieved until they have served their full term, as any perceived instability in the office could be injurious to the entire economy. The recent meeting of some religious leaders, including Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, and Secretary of the National Peace Committee, NPC, at the Abeokuta home of former president Olusegun Obasanjo, has continued to raise concern and controversy. Obasanjo hosted his erstwhile vice, Alhaji Atiku Abukabar, who recently emerged as the presidential flag bearer of the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Others are the meeting were two well-known critics of President Muhammadu Buhari,  Sheik Ahmed Gumi,  Bishop David Oyedepo of Living Faith Church, aka, Winners Chapel and many prominent opposition politicians in the country. The religious leaders were purportedly at the meeting for the reconciliation of Obasanjo and Atiku who had been estranged since their days in office.

Although Bishop Kukah has defended his presence and participation at the peace meeting on October 11, 2018, as nonpartisan and was not intended to endorse any candidate, the explanation is somewhat unconvincing in view of its religious implications and political ramifications to national peace and unity.

He said the meeting was conducted behind closed doors and the pictures were also taken in private after prayers to seal the proceedings. It was neither meant for public consumption nor to provide any political benefit. The Catholic bishop said that it was strictly to support and witness their reconciliation, which he has been trying to broker for some years.
