Car Talk / Dangers Of Excessive Speeding While Driving by breezepro(m): 3:20pm On Jun 25, 2021
Excessive Speeding is defined as going faster than the speed limit and driving too fast in certain conditions, such as inclement weather or road construction. The dangers of speeding are numerous and while it is tempting to drive fast, the benefits of excessive speeding don’t outweigh the dangers.

Most people speed to get to work or an appointment on time. Some just aren’t paying attention to how they are driving. A handful of others do it just to have fun or to challenge other drivers on the highway. You may not get caught while speeding but you might inflict horrible damage on yourself, your vehicle, and other people.

According to the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), one-third of all fatal automobile crashes involve drivers who were speeding. Excessive speeding is the number one probable causal factor of road crashes in Nigeria, followed by loss of control which can also be caused by speeding. As mentioned earlier, the dangers of excessive speeding outweigh the benefits, the price is way greater than the thrill.

One of the dangers of excessive speeding is that the higher the speed, the greater the impact of the crash. There is a clear link between speed and fatalities. Driving at an excessive rate of speed decreases the amount of time that a driver has to avoid a crash. Once the crash occurs, it is much more likely to be severe when the vehicles are traveling at a high rate of speed. The risk of suffering a serious injury or dying also increases with the higher rate of speed.

Those who speed also tend to engage in other risky behaviors. They are less likely to wear their seat belts so their risk of injury during a vehicular accident is exponentially heightened. So while it might be fun to drive fast, it is incredibly dangerous. When you drive at fast speeds, you lose your ability to control your vehicle and you put the well-being of everyone else on the road at risk.

Excessive Speeding

Another pitfall of excessive speeding is its expense. A speeding ticket will set you back between #5,000 and #40,000. That’s a lot of money plus it would take a lot of time to finalize the fines and process, the result will be a loss of money and a waste of time for you. There is also the danger of losing your license.

It is also worth noting that driving the speed limit or lower will save you money at the pump.

If you get in an accident due to excessive speeding, you might lose your vehicle, your life, or both. Other people may also be involved in the accident. Even if you are lucky, you may have to pay for a lot of damages made to your vehicle or other people involved. It really is not worth the price, which is why you must never exceed the speed limit and always drive responsibly.

Car Talk / Theoritical Aspect In Driving by breezepro(m): 2:08pm On Jun 01, 2021
Other things are important before you go behind the wheels such as the theoretical aspect of driving. It is more than learning how to accelerate and use the brakes. Different activities take place outside of the car and it affects the performance of the car. As a driver, there are signs and information about the car you need to know. You should also know about its components and how it operates.
Theory and practical classes for driving are two halves that complement each other. You say to yourself, “I already know how to move a car, I can drive what else do I need to know” of course, you need to know the theoretical aspect of driving.

What do you know about Driver’s Orientation?
We see people arguing on the road because someone made a mistake and they are trying to determine who. Most of the time, the guilty person doesn’t always admit it because of a lack of proper driver orientation. Most drivers know nothing about the right driving techniques and these are some of the things that lead to avoidable accidents

You probably don’t know basic vehicle mechanisms
Are you really a driver if you don’t know the simple parts and components of what you are driving? Most drivers cannot even perform a simple vehicle parade or differentiate between the chassis and steering systems. You must know your vehicle because you cannot control what you don’t know.

You don’t know road signs and pavement markings
Yes, you can drive but do you know the different signs on the highway? Can you interpret the pavement markings on the road? A significant percentage of accidents are caused by the driver’s inability to understand and interpret road signs and traffic signs. Road signs have different functions that range from a warning, information to regulation. They are an integral part of the road and ignoring these signs and marking always have serious consequences. You are not really a driver if you don’t know the road signs and markings.

You don’t know defensive Driving
Defensive driving is driving to utilize safe driving skills to identify, predict, and avoid potential hazards while driving. A defensive driver uses acquired driving skills to reduce driving risks in advance through maneuvering based on informed decision-making. This is one skill most drivers lack. It causes road accidents that happen in unusual weather conditions, at night, or on bad roads mostly. You’ve learned how to move a car, you should learn how to move it without risking your life and others around you?

Driving should be organized and learned professionally. Most Nigerian drivers learn the practical aspect of driving through friends and relatives but completely ignoring the theoretical aspect of driving. While acknowledging the importance of practical training, the benefit of the theoretical is all too encompassing. Through the classroom training, we learn about road signs and other traffic rules and regulations, defensive driving techniques. The theory aspect is as important as the practical aspect too.

Car Talk / 6 Important Documents For Drivers In Nigeria by breezepro(m): 1:27pm On Jun 01, 2021
Many people get into trouble with traffic law enforcement agents because they are unaware of the important documents for drivers that they need to have with them at all times while driving. In fact, most people have their Driver’s license with them always only because they feel it is also a means of identification which is very wrong as the Driver’s license has its purpose apart from identification. All documents have their use and what they indicate or show, so if you are driving without any of the important documents for drivers in Nigeria, traffic law enforcement agents will assume that you don’t have them and this would attract heavy fines.

Information is key; it would in your best interest as a driver in Nigeria to arm yourself with all the important documents for drivers while plying the roads. Here are 6 important documents traffic law enforcement agents look out for.

Driver’s License
The driver’s license is a very important document for drivers, apart from showing that you have passed through driver’s training and that you are eligible to drive it carries information that can be useful during emergencies. The driver’s license carries information such as your blood group and genotype, which are determining factor in case of emergencies like a blood transfusion due after a road crash. This is the reason why it is part of the important documents for drivers Always make sure your driver’s license is up to date and not expired.

Proof of Ownership
Another important document for drivers in Nigeria you need is valid proof of ownership of your vehicle. It is part of the car registration papers, given at the Vehicle Inspection Office. The absence of this document only means one thing; that the vehicle does not belong to you so you must always have this document with you. If you bought the car Nigerian-used, you will have to get a copy of the change of ownership form.

Insurance Certificate
Most people tend to overlook this document because “it doesn’t prove anything”; however, it is advisable to get comprehensive insurance for your vehicle because it saves money and time and makes it easier to avoid conflict in case of road crashes involving other vehicles. It is also part of the very important documents for drivers as the absence of this document will attract fines from the authorities. The Insurance Certificate also serves as identification for the vehicle because you will be registering with your vehicle’s number plate.

Certificate of Road Worthiness
This document shows that your vehicle is fit to ply the road and is not a danger to itself and other road users. The certificate of roadworthiness is time-bound, which means that it only certifies the fitness of the vehicle for a limited time period. After the time has elapsed there is a need to go for another inspection to renew the certificate. the certificate of roadworthiness is also part of the important documents for drivers.

Vehicle License or Registration
This is also one of the important documents for drivers needed. This license proves that the vehicle is registered under Nigerian Law. You have to renew this annually because having an expired vehicle license will attract fines.

Hackney Permit
Hackney Permit is one of the important documents for drivers that is required by commercial operators of vehicles, including other non-commercial vehicles into haulage of people or goods like buses and taxis. To apply for a Hackney Permit Certificate in person, the applicant needs to visit any nearest registering authority in Nigeria.

Other optional but important documents for drivers include Learner’s Permit for learning drivers and Tint Permit for a tinted glasses vehicle.

It is also important to always have a fire extinguisher, a good spare tyre and a car jack in your vehicle. These tools are not just there for a show they are also very important and useful in emergencies. it might not be part of the important documents for drivers but it is essential

Autos / Driving Tips For New Drivers by breezepro(m): 12:26pm On Jun 01, 2021
As a new driver, you might need tips to conquer your fears about driving and gain confidence because there is always a feeling of uncertainty that comes with being a new inexperienced driver. You have passed the driving tests and gone through the training, but you might still feel less confident when you hold the steering wheel. It’s perfectly normal to feel some type of way when you get to hold the wheels yourself without anyone telling you what to do next. These are a few tips you should know that will help you feel at ease while driving alone for the first time.

PRACTICE

Yes, keep practicing to keep getting better. And don’t just practice driving in empty parking lots. You need to learn to merge onto a busy highway, change lanes in traffic, drive in a city, and handle a car in various weather conditions. If there’s something you don’t like, practice it even more, until you’ve conquered your fears enough to drive safely and with confidence.

GET TO KNOW YOUR CAR

Get familiar with your vehicle; some vehicles have distinct features for control and different buttons too. You need to understand what each button does and what the different lights indicate. This is to avoid confusion, a blinking light could mean something is off or wrong with the car, and ignoring might lead to a crash.

STAY OFF YOUR PHONE WHILE DRIVING

Give no space for distraction! Put your phone away and focus. Also putting your handset on speakerphone and holding it just in front of your mouth as you drive isn’t fooling anyone. Even hands-free car kits aren’t as safe as you think. The mental workload required to have a conversation and process additional thoughts can slow your reaction times, causing you to miss things in front of you or prevent you from being proactive in times of danger.

CHECK YOUR BLIND SPOT, EVERY TIME!

Another mistake new drivers make is that they always forget their blind spots. Your mirrors show you what’s behind you, but they can’t show you what’s just outside of your peripheral vision. Your blind spot, as it’s known, is a pretty large area – big enough for bikes and cars to lurk undetected until the moment you turn right and then bang; either someone’s dead or your car’s all mangled. Do yourself and everyone else a favour – check your blind spot every time you change lane or turn right.

DON’T DRIVE IN SOMEONE ELSE’S BLIND SPOT

As you worry about your blind spot, also be mindful of people in your blind spot. Just because you’re smart enough to check your blind spot doesn’t mean everyone else will. The number of people who change lanes without looking properly is quite staggering, so it is left to you to stay out of other people’s blind spot if you notice you’re cruising along to the right of and slightly behind another car, there’s a good chance they can’t see you. Either accelerate to pull alongside or in front of them, or drop back until you’re sure you can be seen in their mirrors.

SLOW DOWN!

Speeding is one of the leading factors in fatal crashes involving young drivers. Basically, the higher your speed, the less time you have to stop your car, and the worse any impact—and subsequent injuries—will likely be.

DON’T TAILGATE.

Following too closely is one of the leading causes of rear-end accidents. Just remember the 3-second rule: Pick an object on the road ahead (like a sign, tree, or overpass), and when the vehicle in front of you passes the object slowly counts “one-one thousand, two-one thousand, three-one thousand.” If you reach the object before completing the count, you’re following too closely.

And In case of accidents, breakdowns, or other emergencies, your car should always contain important driving documents and an emergency kit with everything you’d need for an extended time in your vehicle. Always be prepared!
