Travel / FG Promises More Coaches To Address Surge In Train Passengers by Busy001: 11:02pm On Sep 24, 2019
The Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, says the Federal Government was committed to addressing the surge in train passengers across the country.

Towards this end, 10 new coaches would be launched in November to help address passenger surge at the train stations.

Amaechi told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the problem of the rail service was not e-ticketing but high demand for the service which could be solved by additional coaches.

He said: ”We delivered Abuja-Kaduna, but the pressure is now high with the influx of passengers. We started with about 300 passengers, now we are doing 2,500 passengers, nearly twenty times the number.

“We placed order for some more coaches because the problem is not e-ticketing as they say, but the demand has by far outweighed the supply. By November we should be able to launch 10 more coaches to help address this challenge.”

The Minister explained that by November, two sets of Diesel Multiple Units (DMU) made up of motor car and coaches of various classes would be made available for the rail stations.

He expressed optimism that the coaches would assist in addressing the passenger surge at Abuja-Kaduna and Itakpe-Warri rail stations.

Meanwhile, the Managing Director, Nigerian Railway Corporation, (NRC) Mr Fidet Okhiria, said the DMU’s would be deployed to Lagos-Ibadan and Abuja-Kaduna routes.

Okhiria explained that by the time the other 32 coaches and the locomotives arrived, there would be additional round trips on the various stations.

”We are targeting 16 round trips on Abuja-Kaduna and at the same time Lagos-Ibadan and four round trips on Itakpe-Warri every day.

Commenting on the progress of the Lagos-Ibadan rail project, Okhiria commended the Minister of Transportation for ensuring steady and diligent supervision of the project.

He said: “It’s a good thing to come out ones every month to see the level of work they have done.

“I think our major issue now is to see how we can get to Apapa port, because without the track getting to Apapa port the idea of making this rail has not been achieved.

“As you can see, it is quiet pleasurable to travel by train, we used the narrow gauge within Apapa to Iju after which we used the standard gauge and we are very close to Ibadan.

“I think it is good to always do it like this, inspect it, since the tracks have been done, because if we don’t, people may come and start vandalising it.

“It is a good thing, they have made progress and we hope by November when the coaches come, nothing will stop us from running train till we get to Apapa.”

Similarly, Malam Ibrahim Alhassan, Chairman NRC, commended the work done so far by the Chinese contractors.

“For the first time, we were able to go into the Apapa wharf by train and it is all in the effort to show that whatever encumbrances there are, we will deal with them.

“This is to ensure that the target date of commissioning of this project which is January 2020 is realised.

“As we can see from Iju to Ibadan we have the tracks. In some areas the formation work has been done. We are relocating some of the narrow gauge to another place to give way for the new standard gauge.

“So generally, we are making progress but we are not very impressed with the pace of the work.”

Politics / Airport Closure: Umahi Provides 2 Coaster Buses, 10 Hilux Vans For Travellers To by Busy001: 10:05pm On Sep 24, 2019
Ebonyi State Government has provided two new Coaster buses and 10 Hilux vans for use by passengers to ease their inter-state transportation challenges, especially those travelling from the state to Owerri in Imo.

Gov. Dave Umahi made the presentation on Tuesday at Ishieke, Ebonyi Local Government Area during the flag off ceremony of Abakaliki-Owerri Airport Bus Shuttle Services.

The governor, who was represented by Mr Austin Umahi, a chieftain of the PDP, said the measure was to ease transportation challenges following the closure of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu due to renovation.

News9naija reports that the Shuttle’s Head Office is at Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki, permanent site.

The governor said that the transport services rendered would be free and be operational pending the completion of the renovation of Enugu airport.

“This is a proactive measure taken to ensure safety and these measures are seen in developed countries.

“The palliative measure will go a long way and an action taken to achieve this particular purpose is commendable,” Umahi said.

He urged the vehicle operators to handle them with care to sustain its purpose.

He called on other governors of the South-Eastern part of the country to emulate the gesture to relieve people in travelling pending the completion of the airport project.

The Secretary to State Government (SSG), Dr Kenneth Ugbala, commended the governor for his proactive approach toward provision of the vehicles to ease the travelling problems of the people.

Ugbala said that five hilux vehicles would be stationed at Owerri airport and another five in Abakaliki palliative lodge center.

“Today, the vehicles are here and the idea is to make sure every citizen and visitor to the state is secured while they travel through Owerri to board flights to their different destinations,” Ugbala said.

Prof Chigozie Ogbu, Vice-Chancellor, EBSU, commended the governor for establishing a liaison office at the permanent site of the institution.

The vice-chancellor described the initiative as a unique venture that would save people from risks associated with travelling.

“This is a unique approach to save people from the hazards of travelling on the road,” Ogbu said.

NEWS9NAIJA reports top government functionaries, the Police, Nigeria Correctional Services, Nigeria Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were among others in attendance.

Keyamo, a senior advocate of Nigeria, while reacting to the development, wrote on Twitter, “On the move again: Two portfolios in two months!

“Just been redeployed to the Ministry of Labour and Employment to work with my long-time big brother, H.E, Chris Ngige.”

“Thank you, Mr President for finding me versatile enough to move around. Always ready to serve in any capacity.”

Politics / Govt To Inaugurate ‘clean Nigeria: Use The Toilet’ Campaign November 19 by Busy001: 7:10am On Sep 24, 2019
The Federal Government has said it will inaugurate the “Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet” campaign on November 19 as efforts towards achieving the national target of ending open defecation in the country by 2025.

The Acting Coordinator, Clean Nigeria, Mrs Chizoma Opara said this yesterday in Abuja in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

NAN reports that “Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet” campaign was approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC)on May 8 to ensure all households are mobilised to provide their sanitation facilities.

According to Opara, President Muhammadu Buhari will perform the national inauguration and kick-start the campaign.

“In preparation for the inauguration, a date has been fixed and we have got confirmation from the State House that it is November 19 at the International Conference Centre in Abuja.

“We are hoping that the date does not change as we are working towards that. This is because that day happens to be World Toilet Day. So, it will be a great opportunity to celebrate the campaign with that,” she said.

The Acting Coordinator also said that in preparation for the inauguration of the campaign, the Minister of Water Recourses, Mr Sulieman Adamu, had begun an advocacy visits to state governors.

She explained that the advocacy visits would ensure that the governors buy into the Clean Nigerian campaign.

“What the minister wants to do is to have the opportunity to engage with all the governors to get them to buy into the ‘Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet’ campaign.

“It is also to open up the statistics of the states with respect to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene sector, letting them know how the states are faring, within the country as a whole,” Opara said.

According to her, part of the advocacy visit by the minister will ensure that states know their statistics in relation to open defecation.

“It is also to let them know that Nigeria, being number two, is about to take up the number one position as the largest country with people defecating in the open.

“I hope when governors start seeing these figures on open defecation in their states, it will trigger them to take action and to say they need to stop open defecation.

“So, letters have been sent out to all governors for the advocacy visits that have commenced in August and will end in October.

“The minister has also said any governor who wishes to actually pay him a visit in his office in Abuja can also do so. This is what Kaduna and Nasarawa states’ governors have done when they were within the FCT,” she said.

NAN also reports that the “Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet” campaign is aimed at mobilising high-level political support, resources and populace towards building a new culture of safe defecation.

It is also to ensure that relevant government institutions and the private sector must provide sanitation facilities in public places such as schools, healthcare centres, parks and markets to realise total coverage and sustainable access for the populace.

Politics / President Buhari To Visit South Africa by Busy001: 5:41am On Sep 08, 2019
PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari’s planned visit to South Africa next month remains on course to reinforce “the strong bonds between the two countries” and jointly develop responses to problems affecting people and businesses in South Africa and Nigeria, the presidency said on Saturday.

In the wake of public violence in South Africa and developments in Nigeria around South African businesses based in the West African country, President Cyril Ramaphosa held discussions on Friday with Nigerian Ambassador Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, Buhari’s special envoy, the presidency said in a statement.

The visit to Pretoria by the special envoy followed a recent meeting between presidents Ramaphosa and Buhari in Yokohama, Japan, on the sidelines of the summit of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development.

Crime / Taliban Mistakenly Kidnaps Six Journalists-Reuters by Busy001: 10:37pm On Sep 07, 2019
KABUL — Six Afghan journalists, all identified as radio news reporters, were kidnapped by Taliban insurgents Friday while traveling to a media conference in the eastern province of Paktia, according to provincial officials and a Taliban spokesman.

But after a week of deadly attacks by the Taliban, including suicide bombings aimed at high-profile targets in the capital and ground attacks in four provinces, the chief Taliban spokesman said Saturday that the seizure of the journalists had been a “mistake” and that they would soon be released.

No direct contact has been reported with the missing reporters, and there has been no independent confirmation that they are alive and unharmed.

Hamid Kohestani, the news manager of Radio Killid Group, said Saturday night he did not know whether the journalists were still in Taliban custody. He said the station in Kabul had not been able to reach its reporter, Khairuddin, on his cellphone.

“We demand the release of our colleagues,” he said.

The insurgent spokesman, Zabiullah Muhajid, said in an online statement that “our mujahideen have mistakenly kidnapped” the reporters and that as soon as cellphone contact was made with local insurgent commanders, they would be released. Abdullah Hasrat, a spokesman for Paktia’s governor, said officials were “trying to negotiate their release.”

The journalists were described by Afghan media outlets as reporters from four Afghan news stations that broadcast in the Dari and Pashto languages. They were reportedly driving to attend a media workshop when they were abducted in Zurmat, a district of Paktia controlled by the Taliban.

In addition to Khairuddin, who goes by one name, the abductees were identified by ToloNews TV and other media as Abdul Rauf Zaheen from Pashtun Ghag radio, Jamaluddin Ilham from Radio Melma and three staff members of Radio Yaran: Tariq Shah Zaki, Abdul Wahid Wairan and Asadullah Samim.

Initial concerns about the group’s safety intensified following the news that Abdul Samad Amiri, a government human rights advocate traveling from Kabul to the western Ghowr province on Wednesday, had been abducted and shot dead by local Taliban fighters in Wardak province, a Taliban stronghold. His death sparked an outcry among Afghan and international rights groups.

The Paktia incident followed a spate of recent suicide bombings in Kabul and elsewhere that left scores of people dead and many more injured. All were claimed by the Taliban, which has ratcheted up its campaign of violence as U.S. officials seek to finalize a controversial peace deal with Taliban negotiators in Qatar.

Last year, Afghanistan was the deadliest country for journalists, with at least 13 killed, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists in New York. Another press monitoring group said a total of 16 had died. Most of the casualties were TV reporters and camera crews covering bombings and other violence.

Thursday marked the first anniversary of the deaths of two ToloNews staff members in Kabul, reporter Samim Faramarz and cameraman Ramiz Ahmadi, who were killed in a double-suicide bombing outside a gym. The Islamic State claimed responsibility. This week, murals and shrines were created in the city to commemorate them.

So far this year, one Afghan journalist has been killed by insurgents. On Jan. 5, Javid Noori, a radio host and regional government employee, was shot dead by Taliban fighters who stopped and searched a bus at a roadblock in the western province of Farah. He was separated from the other passengers and shot. The Taliban later said it had executed “an enemy officer.” In June, the Taliban issued a threat to Afghan news outlets, saying they would be attacked unless they stopped broadcasting government “propaganda” against the insurgents within a week.

Taliban officials rarely express regret or error after attacks that harm civilians, although they often give them military rationales. On Monday, when a truck bomb devastated a Kabul compound for foreign civilians and contractors, 16 Afghans and a Romanian diplomat were killed. The Taliban said its target was foreign “occupying forces.”

Politics / IMF Removes Age Limit For MD Position by Busy001: 7:04am On Sep 07, 2019
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved the removal of the age limit for the position of its managing director, paving the way for Kristalina Georgieva to head the multilateral lender.

Since 1951, the IMF’s bylaws had prohibited the appointment of a candidate aged 65 or over as managing director.

It had also prohibited the managing director from serving past his/her 70th birthday, the IMF executive board said in a statement.

The board of governors has approved the proposal by the executive board to remove the age limit for the position of IMF managing director, it said.

The amendment, effective immediately, brings the managing director’s terms of appointment into line with those of members of the IMF executive board, which the managing director chairs, and those of the president of the World Bank, who are not subject to an age limit, the executive board said.

The 66-year-old Georgieva, a Bulgarian national, served on the European Commission and has been the Chief Executive Officer of the World Bank since January 2017.

So far, the only candidate, Georgieva was selected by the European Union to lead the IMF after narrowly defeating former Dutch Finance Minister, Jeroen Dijsselbloem.

The position of IMF chief has always been held by Europeans while the head of the World Bank has traditionally been American, an informal arrangement that has stayed in place for over seven decades.

In July, Christine Lagarde announced her resignation from the IMF position with effect from Sept. 12, shortly after she was nominated for the presidency of the European Central Bank (ECB), triggering a selection process for the global lender’s next managing director.

Nominations to the position closed on Sept. 6 and the IMF executive board intend to complete the selection process by Oct. 4.
