I'll never forget my first indomie experience back in 1991. My brother was back from boarding school (Model(?) College Lagos) and he bought his mixed-race (German/Nigerian) new best friend home with him to show off to us undecided(I think grin). Anyway they were both in the kitchen preparing the goods and I remember me and my other siblings were so intrigued by the aroma, cutting the long story short I vividly remember him giving us one strand each to taste and that was it I was hooked cheesy.

On the topic of drinks, I don't think I will ever stop missing Tandi Guarana, that drink was pure magic specially when piping cold, 'Guaraná Antarctica' is the closest I've tasted as an alternative but it is much weaker than Tandi.

Foreign Affairs / Gabon Finalises First Debt-for-nature Swap In Africa by BuyMeBanger: 9:02am On Aug 16, 2023
Fellow Naija folk what do you make of this deal, previously just last year working for Assala Energy they gave the impression their oil deal with Gabon was keeping the nation both financially and politically stable then I read this on FT today:

Gabon on Tuesday closed the first debt-for-nature swap in continental Africa, in a sign that more developing countries are turning to deals that funnel money to conservation and ease their debt burdens.

The $500mn deal, which was arranged by Bank of America, lowers the interest rate on Gabon’s debt and gives it longer to make repayments. The African nation in turn has promised to spend at least $125mn to widen a marine reserve and strengthen fishing regulations, which could help protect endangered humpback dolphins.

Proponents of such deals hope it will drive momentum to reshape the financing landscape for developing countries, which have long called for new ways to address their high debt financing costs and free up money to spend on mitigating the uneven impacts of climate change.

The Gabon deal was a way to “knock down” the divide between philanthropy, public funding and private markets, according to activist investor Jeff Ubben.

Ubben, who sits on the board of oil and gas giant ExxonMobil and is part of the advisory team for the UN climate summit COP28, has helped fund the debt team at the non-profit organisation The Nature Conservancy, which helped arrange the deal.

“It’s the hardest thing to do in the world to put money into [protecting] nature,” he said. “[But] you get enough use cases and more and more participants are comfortable and then it really takes off.”

Gabon’s deal will be cheaper in part due to the political insurance provided by the International Development Finance Corporation, a development agency backed by the US government. It was arranged by Bank of America, which has muscled its way into a market previously dominated by collapsed Swiss bank Credit Suisse.

Lee White, Gabon’s minister of water, forests, the sea and environment, said the deal would marginally lower the country’s debt repayments.

Some of the savings from this will be put into an endowment fund for marine conservation. “It is the first chunk of sustainable funding for the preservation and management of Gabon’s marine resources,” he said.

White said issuing the “blue bonds” — so called because they are ocean-themed and could be added to sustainable investing funds — had been far easier than long-running attempts to generate payments for the conservation of Gabon’s forests through structuring and selling carbon credits.

Although Gabon’s claims to such credits were much more robust than other discredited schemes, he said, it had proved difficult to sell them. “It’s been quite a rocky road but we’re still heading down it,” he said.

The credit rating on Gabon’s restructured debt rose from junk territory, CAA1, to AA2. Gabon also has more time to pay debts back, as bonds due to mature in 2025 and 2031 were replaced with a 15-year loan.

However, investors have cautioned that the Gabon deal may not provide an easy blueprint for others to follow. The yield on Gabon’s bond will be about 6 per cent, according to initial market pricing, lower than the 10-11 per cent yields on Gabon bonds in secondary markets but also lower than many other agreements for emerging markets.

A similar deal would be “massively positive” for Kenya, which has a $2bn bond coming up for refinancing next year, as well as for other African countries facing debt difficulties, said Richard House, chief investment officer for emerging market debt at Allianz Global Investors.

However, he warned that some investors may see the Gabon deal as “a bit of an orphan” because of its complicated structure, with a yield low for emerging market investors and high for those used to buying only investment grade bonds. “Only time will tell if it helps in the long term.”

Drawbacks of the deal include its complicated structure, the “opaque process within which it is run”, and the “lack of detail” about how savings are calculated, said Thys Louw, emerging market debt portfolio manager at fund firm Ninety One.

Another potential complication is the repeated description of Gabon’s restructured bonds as “blue” in a joint statement by Bank of America, a Gabonese minister, the DFC and TNC.

The “blue bond” marketing label typically refers to debt issuances where all of the money raised has to be spent on marine conservation or water-related projects.

But unlike a typical “blue bond”, the bonds issued to fund debt-for-nature swaps can be spent on projects that are not linked to conservation.

According to Moody’s credit rating agency, the $500mn loan represents about 4 per cent of Gabon’s overall debt pile.

In spite of the fundraising, Moody’s said that Gabon still faced “high credit risks” linked to the green transition because it relied on the oil industry for more than a third of government revenue. It also warned that the country had “weak public financial management” and a record of “persistent” arrears to external creditors.

A person close to Bank of America said the bank had decided to do the deal publicly, rather than placing the bonds privately as Credit Suisse has done with deals in Ecuador, Barbados and Belize worth more than $1bn in total. It did this to bring “more transparency” to the structure and to create a more liquid asset class. The person acknowledged the deal was “complicated” and said: “Once we educate folks we expect these to be more streamlined.”

Scott Nathan, the DFC’s chief executive, said the bank was working on getting similar transactions over the line after receiving interest from countries that have “debt management goals and economic development and conservation issues”. But he cautioned: “I don’t think it’s a solution to the global debt crisis . . . It’s a small number relative to the global debt picture.”

Crime / Carer Struck A Vulnerable Patient In The Face Hours Before The Patient's Death by BuyMeBanger: 7:04am On Apr 07, 2023
This is the moment a cold-hearted carer struck a vulnerable patient in the face hours before the man died from a cardiac arrest.

Dami Tobi Ayan 'man-handled' Ben King by pushing him to the ground and dragging him by the arms before slapping him with an open hand.

Cowardly Ayan, 62, was then caught on camera looking around and checking no one was there before hitting his victim again with the back of his hand.

His frustration was directed towards a defenceless patient who had Down's Syndrome and severe learning difficulties.

Mr King, 32, who was naked at the time, was found unresponsive an hour later at Cawston Park private hospital, in a village near Norwich, Norfolk, and pronounced dead later the same day.

Cowardly Ayan, 62, was then caught on camera looking around and checking no one was there before hitting his victim

The assault and the fatal cardiac arrest were not formally linked but Ayan was caught after a coroner asked police to check any CCTV footage.

He was jailed for nine months on Wednesday after admitting ill treatment or wilful neglect of a person without mental capacity at an earlier hearing.

Passing sentence at Norwich Crown Court, Judge Andrew Shaw said the defendant had displayed a 'total absence of empathy and dignity' in the treatment of his ward, who was 'completely dependent on his carers for everything'.

He added: 'The message must go out to those that are supposed to care for the most vulnerable in our society that if you ill-treat them, the court will impose punishment.'

Mr King's mother, Gina Egmore, 55, described her son as 'my life' and revealed she remained haunted that he had 'all his dignity taken from him'.

She was left 'deeply affected' by the fact the July 2020 incident left her son so scared 'he soiled himself'.

'I feel broken this could happen in a so-called hospital by a carer,' she said.

The hospital closed in May 2021 after 'consistent failures to meet standards', according to a damning report by the Norfolk Safeguarding Adults Board.

'Indifferent and harmful hospital practices' included 'excessive use of restraint and seclusion by unqualified staff' and a 'high tolerance of inactivity'. Two other patients died there after shoddy treatment.

Ben King, 32, was found unresponsive an hour after the incident at Cawston Park private hospital, near Norwich, Norfolk, and pronounced dead later the same day

Ben King's mother described her son as 'my life' and revealed she remained haunted that he had 'all his dignity taken from him'

Simon Connolly, prosecuting, said Mr King was admitted to the hospital in 2018 after his mother became unable to care for his complex needs. He had been diagnosed with a life-threatening condition.

Mr King, who was 'completely dependent on his carers for going to the toilet and eating due to a risk of choking, ballooned from 13 stone to 19 stone during his stay.

Describing the assault on the day of his death, Mr Connolly said: 'It begins with him pushing Ben forwards in the seat.'

Ayan then pulled the victim 'forward by his arms' before 'going out of sight of the camera' and then returning.

With Mr King now on the floor, the burly carer then 'raises his right arm' and hits him open-handed.

He then 'looked back' towards the camera as if aware he 'must have been seen', before delivering a second blow.

Witnesses told police during the investigation that Ayan, of Norwich, often intimidated and shouted abuse at Mr King, calling him a 'baby' or saying he was 'disgusting'.

Andrew Oliver, defending, said his client – who has been barred as a carer – was 'sorry he let him down'.

Passing sentence at Norwich Crown Court, Judge Andrew Shaw said the defendant had displayed a 'total absence of empathy and dignity' in the treatment of his ward

Detective Inspector Sam Pontin said outside court: 'Ayan was in a position of trust and was meant to care for Ben, who was extremely vulnerable and had limited means of protecting himself.

'This trust was abused and it's important Ayan faces justice for this.'

Cawston Park Hospital was run by Jeesal Akman Care Corporation, which pledged never to run hospitals again after the independent report in 2021. It apologised at the time for Mr King's death, as well as those of Joanna Bailey, 36, and Nicholas Briant, 33.

Staff failed to start CPR after finding Miss Bailey unconscious in 2018 at the £1,000-a-week hospital. She had learning difficulties, epilepsy and sleep apnoea.

Her father Keith said: 'They take the money. They get paid big bucks and don't provide anything.'

Mr Briant, who had learning difficulties, also died in 2018 after swallowing a piece of a plastic cup.

The report added 'not a great deal has changed' since the abuse scandal at Winterbourne View private hospital near Bristol, which was exposed in an undercover operation by the BBC's Panorama in 2011.

It does finally explain all the police presence which I noticed was constantly there (compared to surrounding areas) the months following this tragedy.

Oba Kosoko of Lagos was against the abolition of slave trade.

I did some further research into that and according to Wikipedia the reason for this was: The proposal was rejected by Kosoko "on the technical reason that Lagos was under the Oba of Benin (traditional ruler and the custodian of the culture of the Edo people and all Edoid people) and that it was only that Oba who could deal with foreign powers concerning the status of Lagos"

Does this further support the recent statements that Lagos actually is an Edo Peoples owned region/state rather Yorubas? Both references from the above quote on Wikipedia are from Nigerian historians.

If every state in Nigeria is like Lagos, Nigeria would have been better than this.

Enough with the excuses already, we have an excuse for every failings that befall Nigeria. And to answer your question: regressing.

I mean did you think before you wrote because London is apparently thousands of years older than Lagos hence why they have a metro systems, what about cities younger than Lagos with metro systems?
Travel / Re: Pictures Of The New Train Stations In Lagos by BuyMeBanger: 11:20pm On Jan 25, 2023
Look no one is expecting underground metro in Lagos (one can dream) but enough of the excuses as to how it can't happen specially the one regarding Lagos being a low-lying coastal city, Rotterdam is 90% below sea-level and they have a metro network with numerous stations underground, damn even Jakarta and Bangkok both low-lying coastal cities have underground metro networks. Alexandria in Egypt another low-lying coastal city are building their underground metro network by the Chinese costing them $1.5bn, so that ridiculous estimated cost of $325 Billion for Lagos, c'mon.
