A 24–year-old lady whose name was given as Chidera
Nwaoga has reportedly lost her pregnancy after
taking a dose of expired drug administered on her by
an untrained chemist at Nsugbe in Anambra East
local government area of Anambra State.

The chemist, Mr Odimegwu Ikunne, who carried out
the abortion, has been arrested and is helping the
police in their investigation.
The state police command said yesterday that after
taking the drug, the lady delivered a premature baby
which she tried to dispose of when the police
arrested her.
Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in the state,
Mr Mohammed Haruna said that following a tip-off,
police operatives attached 33 Division, in
collaboration with Nsugbe vigilante group, arrested
Nwaoga with a dead premature baby girl concealed
inside a rubber bucket on her way to bury the child
inside the bush.
He said that it was at that point that the lady,
who hailed from Izzi local government area of Ebonyi
State, was apprehended by the police.
Haruna said: “Preliminary investigation revealed that
the woman, who was heavily pregnant, approached a
quack and untrained chemist, one Odimegwu Ikunne,
aged 51 years of Nando village, but resides at
Akpalagu village, Nsugbe who allegedly administered
an injection on her and aborted the pregnancy.
“Search was executed at the premises of the quack
chemist and some quantity of expired drugs and
syringes were recovered, while the said Chidera, who
was weak and lost much blood when arrested, has
now fully recovered due to urgent medical attention
she received at Multicare Hospital.”
The PPRO said that the decomposing body of the
baby was later buried based on expert advice in
order not to constitute a health hazard to the
public.
According to him, the Commissioner of Police in
Anambra State, Mr John Abang has ordered that
the case be transferred to the state Criminal

Crime / Lagos Woman Drowns Daughter In Bucket Of Water by captainjerry: 6:42am On May 13, 2020
Shame, lack of money made me do it – Suspect

A 22 - year - old mother , Oluwafunmilola Adisa , has been arrested for killing her daughter , Oluwanifemi , at their place of residence on Plot 221 Gowon Estate , in the Ipaja area of Lagos State . The incident , which happened on Monday, also saw the woman dropping a note for her sister , Damilola , chronicling how she perpetrated the crime .
She blamed Oluwanifemi for the hardship she had been facing after she gave birth to her 21 months ago , adding that the daughter ’ s arrival cost her an admission to study law . In a bid to alleviate herself suffering , Oluwafunmilola said she drowned her baby in a bucket of water , adding that after committing the crime, she went to the Gowon Estate Police Station to report herself . Explaining the events leading to the baby ’ s death , the Ogun State indigene stated, “ I turned myself in after killing my daughter on Monday, May 11 , 2020 . “ At first , I was thinking of strangling her, later I thought of suffocating her with a pillow, but my sister warned me to keep Oluwanifemi away from water after she had a dream and that gave me the idea of drowning her. “ On the day of the incident , around 2 pm , Oluwanifemi was assisting me to dress up , because she thought that I would take her out with me . But I told her that she was not going anywhere , because she would die that day and I would be going to the police station after killing her. So, I opened a big bucket of water , threw her in and covered the bucket, but she was able to push away the cover . “ The water in the bucket was not much , so , I poured more water in it , but she was still able to push away the cover to breathe , so I turned her upside down , threw her in the bucket of water and closed it . “ After some time , I saw her floating and when I brought her out, she was still breathing . I put her in again and brought her out after some time , but she was still breathing and at the third attempt , I left her for some minutes till she died . I didn ’ t feel any pain killing her, because I was desperate . ”
After perpetrating the crime , Oluwafunmilola stated that she wrote a letter to her sister , Damilola , to inform her that she had fulfilled the promise of killing her baby , adding that she took the action because of the shame the baby ’ s birth had brought to her and aas a result of lack of money . She stated , “ The reason for the drastic decision is lack of financial help ; I was tired and ashamed ; when I gained admission to study law at the Obafemi Awolowo University , Ile - Ife , Osun State , I got pregnant and deferred my admission , which I later lost. “ So killing my baby and losing my admission have a connection . I felt I would be free if I kill her and would be able to go anywhere I like and no one would disturb me that I had a daughter outside wedlock . “ After she died , I removed her from the bucket of water , placed her remains on a pillow and covered her with a white cloth. I confirmed that she was dead, because her legs and hands were very pale ; her tongue also popped out in between her teeth .

Politics / Reps Reduce Age Qualification For Presidency, Govs, Senate To 30yrs by captainjerry: 6:03am On Jun 09, 2016
ABUJA —THE Bill seeking to reduce the age qualifications for interested candidates to contest for the positions of President, governor and senate in the country to 30 years yesterday passed second reading in the House of Representatives.
The bill, which also makes provision for independent candidacy into the country’s electoral process, further reduces the age qualifications to contest for the House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly to 25 years.
The Bill is an alteration of section 65, 106, 131 and 177 of the 1999 constitution which had prescribed qualification into the office of President to 40 years and above, office of governors and senate, 35 years and above as well as House of Representatives and state Houses of Assembly to 25 years and above.

In his lead debate, the sponsor of the bill, Tony Chinedu Nwulu representing Oshodi-Isolo 11 Federal Constituency of Lagos State, on platform of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, noted that electing candidates into public offices was an important aspect of democratic practices.
He stated: “Countries like the United Kingdom parliament decided in 2006 to lower their age of candidacy from 21 to 18, which had existed since the Parliamentary Elections Act 1695. An age candidacy of 25 would encourage greater youth participation in politics.”
Nwulu stated that many countries world wide had called for a reduction in age qualification into elected offices, adding that the bill was a demonstration of the growing desire and demand of youths to participate in the democratic process.
According to him, “this desire itself could be viewed as a sufficient warrant for young people to participate, demonstrate a willingness to engage and fulfill the burdens of office.”
On the Independent candidacy, he stressed the need to open up the space for lawmakers to come in as independent candidates.
He said: “It is pertinent now to amend the constitution to make room for independent candidates to widen the democratic processes in our elections, and above all to encourage our young ones to fully participate in all elective offices.”

Politics / FG To Suspend Military Offensive Against Militants by captainjerry: 9:25pm On Jun 06, 2016
By Michael Eboh
The Federal Government, Monday, said it is considering scaling down military operations in the offensive against Niger Delta militants for about two weeks to allow for dialogue with the militants and other aggrieved groups in the region.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, Mr. Ibe Kachikwu, called on the militants to shelve violence, sheathe their weapon and embrace dialogue with government.
He said the planned suspension of military offensive is to allow for individuals in the creeks to converge for the dialogue.

Politics / Drink Your Oil, We Would Eat Our Yams, Arewa Chieftain Tells Niger Delta by captainjerry: 6:01am On Jun 06, 2016
Senator Joseph Kennedy N Waku, (JKN Waku), the stormy petrel of the Middle Belt was elected senator for the Benue North West Constituency of Benue State, on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in 1999. Not long after she came into national renown following his controversial call for a military coup on the claim that President Olusegun Obasanjo was derailing the democracy project. Since then he has been an unrepentant critic of President Obasanjo, and a major political figure in the North. Waku is not only a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC but also of the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF. In this interview, he speaks on current national issues. Excerpts:

By Joseph Erunke

What is your reaction to the renewed insurgency by militants in the Niger Delta?

In the first place, what were the offences committed by these people before they were pardoned? Are they not criminals? If I were the president, I would jail them.

So, are you ruling out dialogue as proposed by some people as a way of resolving the problem?

What kind of dialogue? Let them bring to table what they want. Let them do what they are doing, they will also suffer it. Are they also not suffering when they ruin the economy? Are they not facing the same problem like you and I? They are talking of marginalization today.
If you create Biafra today, is Biafra solidly Igbo's? It’s not. When you go there, you would find a southern minority who will tell you that they don’t want to be part of it, even among the Igbo. Some Igbo will tell you that they don’t want it. If there is definitive kind of discrimination against certain segments of the country, that needs to be addressed because injustice creates dissatisfaction. If there have been injustices against one particular group in this country, let’s address it and not by taking the law into their hands.
That is criminality. We are also affected but we want to take it in a matured approach. You cannot go and begin to destroy state apparatus in order to achieve your agitation, it is against the law. I am not in a position to talk about which contract was revoked because I am not involved in that.
If those contracts were illegally awarded without going through the due process and the current administration wants to follow due process, what is bad about that? Go and do your investigation on that contract to see whether the old law that qualifies one for such contracts were made. What do you award contracts to militants for? In the first place, the name ‘militant’ is criminality. It is only this country that somebody will come back and say I am a militant and then ‘you award him contract.’ If they claim to be agitators as they are saying, then let them come out with their demands and not by holding the state to ransom.

Now, how would you want the government to handle this situation?

My advice is that you can’t take government for ransom. If their livelihoods have been damaged considerably by the pipelines and they have nowhere to go, let there be adequate compensation to them. It is not to take laws into their hands. And by the way, let me be honest with you, this is natural resources; nobody owns it and nobody farms it but by virtue of the location that you find yourself. If there is ecological diversification and you need to do something for your livelihood, then you table this issue to the federal government so that there would be amicable resolution.

Giving the adverse effects of their actions, will it not be better to seek dialogue?

What do they need? Let them come out and tell government that ‘this has been our farmland, it has been devastated, we have no land to farm anymore’ and then bring a proposal to the federal government. This is how it should be done than issuing threats. If I were the president, I would have ended that thing by now.

How would you have done it?

Yes, by closing the whole thing down. Before oil came, didn’t this country exist? So, what are you talking about? We have been blindfolded and Nigeria became so lazy, a nation of cheap money. Before the oil, we had cocoa, we had palm oil, groundnut and pyramid, and those were the things that actually helped to develop the oil.
At a point, we in Benue challenged them that okay,’ let them go and drink their oil, we would eat our yams and then see who will survive.’

Sports / Muhammad Ali: The Boxing Great´s Defining Moments by captainjerry: 6:44am On Jun 04, 2016
Following the death of Muhammad Ali, here we take a look back at some of the most memorable moments of the boxing legend's career.

CLAY-LISTON I

Ali – then known as Cassius Clay – went into his first clash with Sonny Liston as the huge underdog, with the defending WBA and WBC heavyweight champion having picked up two emphatic first-round victories over Floyd Patterson. However, Liston failed to emerge from his corner at the beginning of the seventh round, handing Ali victory. The bout, as well as the re-match won by Ali, was dogged by allegations of fixing, although the claims were never substantiated.
THE FIGHT OF THE CENTURY

Ali had won 31 fights on the bounce by the time he came to face Joe Frazier for the first time in 1971. Ali, having been stripped of his titles and served a three-and-a-half-year ban for rejecting military service, was looking to win back the titles he had been forced to vacate prior to his suspension. However, it was Frazier who eventually emerged as victor by unanimous decision at the end of a brutal 15 rounds.

ALI-FRAZIER II

RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE
That win over Frazier was the ideal morale-booster for Ali ahead of a title bout against George Foreman in Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo). Foreman had beaten Frazier in 1973 and successfully defended his titles in subsequent fights against Jose Roman and Ken Norton, heading to Africa as favourite. However, Ali employed what became known as his rope-a-dope tactic of leaning on the ropes, allowing Foreman to punch him on the arms and body, and directing straight punches at his opponent's face. The approach worked, as Ali stopped a tiring Foreman in the ninth.
THRILLER IN MANILA

Their third and final bout between Ali and Frazier lived up to the promise of the earlier two, with Ali entering as defending champion for the first time. Frazier's corner spent the build-up warning Ali against using the underhand tactics they felt he had used to emerge victorious in their second meeting. However, it was Ali who eventually came out on top after another bruising clash, winning by technical knockout in the 14th round of 15.

By Esther Onyegbula
A middle- aged trader at Alaba International Market, Ojo, Lagos, simply identified as Joseph, a.k.a Pastor is in Police net for allegedly raping his neighbour’s seven-year-old granddaughter (names withheld) at Mechanic Bus Stop, Ojo, Lagos. It was learned that the victim’s mother, Mrs Nene Oguchint, alongside her three children visited her sick father who lives in the same compound with the suspect at Number 19, Adeyanju (Civilian Barracks) three weeks ago. The victim was allegedly raped twice during this period by Joseph who is popularly called Pastor in the vicinity.
Crime Alert gathered that the bubble burst after a teenager in the compound confided in the victim’s mother, Nene Oguchint, that Pastor had earlier defiled his 12-year-old brother, Collins. Shocked at the disclosure, the victim's mother made further enquiries only to discover that her visiting daughter had fallen victim of the notorious serial rapist.

Victim’s account

The victim (names with held) told her bewildered mother that the first time pastor did it was the day she, together with her younger ones, went inside the Pastor’s room.
“When we entered, he told my little sister Amaka to take my brother, Victor outside. When they went outside, Uncle asked me to sit on his laps, removed my pants and his trouser and started putting his private part inside my bum-bum. Later, white substance began to come out from it. After he finished, he gave her N10,00. The second time was in the afternoon; I was in the passage alone, so Uncle Joseph started calling me, in a low voice, to come in.
I thought he wanted me to run some errand for him. So, I went inside his room and he did the same thing to me. After he finished, he gave me two sliced bread. Asked why she didn’t tell her mother, she said that Uncle threatened that he will kill her if she told anyone.
How the bubble burst
Mother of the victim, Nene Oguchint who spoke to Crime Alert on Thursday morning gave her own account of the incident.
“I live in the East with my husband and children. I came to visit my sick father who lives in that compound on the 29th of April with my three young children. At about 6pm when I got home on Monday, I was washing clothes when one of my neighbour's children, named Junior (14 years old) came to me and said that there was something that happened that he wanted to tell me. I asked him what, he said one of our neighbours, Joseph (a.k.a. Brother pastor) pleaded with his mother to allow his younger brother Collins, (12-years old) sleep in his room since his sister didn’t come back home that night.”
According to him: “Ignorantly, my mother agreed and that night, my younger brother slept in his room. In the morning when Collins woke up, he complained to me that Pastor didn’t allow him to sleep in the night, as he kept touching his penis, kissing, and troubling him all through the night. He pulled his trouser and when he tried to shout, he closed his mouth.” Junior further explained that thrice the Pastor attempted to rape him and he told him off, as such he dislikes him.
She continued: “I asked Junior why he didn’t report to his mother, he said he didn’t because the Pastor is dating his mother and that his mother would not believe him. Still, I encouraged him to tell his mother which he did. Unfortunately when he did, the mother slapped him, asking how he would make such an allegation against Joseph the Pastor. While this was going on, two siblings from another tenant, Joel and Emma said that the same Pastor has done similar things to them, too. I asked them why they didn’t tell their mother when it happened, they said he threatened to kill them if they told anyone.
“I was shocked so I called my daughter (names withheld) and asked her if she heard what Junior, Joel and Emma had said. She said yes. I asked her if the Pastor had done something like that to her, she started shivering and said; “Yes mummy, please don’t beat me.” I asked her how many times, she said twice. After she explained to me, I raised alarm. Then, the Pastor was already inside the house of one of the vicrtim's mother, Mama Collins. I then confronted him. He didn’t say anything, it was Mummy Collins that was pleading with me to calm down and stop shouting and advised that I should not tell anyone.
I told her that it was not possible, that there was no way I would sweep a case of defilement against my daughter under the carpet. I then called my husband who had travelled to the east. It was my husband that told me to report the case to the police, which I did on Tuesday morning because it was already late. When I got to Iyana-Isashi Police Station, the police officers were confused because the suspect had come to report the case to them the previous night.
Alleged police complicity
“The police took my daughter to a private hospital in Ali-Baba, Isashi, where a test was conducted and it was discovered that she has been sexually abused, recently. After attempts to persuade me to settle the case failed, the police officer in-charge of the case said that if I want the case to be charged to court, I should be ready to pay money for transportation to Badagry Magistrate's court.
"On Wednesday afternoon, the police officer in-charge of the case hurriedly took us to Badagry Magistrate's court after he heard that human right groups were interested in the case. Unfortunately, we got there late and the case could not be heard because the court didn’t sit. They referred us to Ojo Magistrate's court. I don’t understand how the police is handling the case any more as the IPO says I won’t be going to the court with my daughter.
Since the incident took place, many of the suspect's relatives including an Anglican priest, have been calling asking us to name our price, that they would pay anything for the case not to go to court. The suspect who was initially denying the allegation, later started begging me to forgive him and withdraw the case.”
Lamenting, the victim’s father, Chinedu Oguchint, a trader, who came to Lagos because of the case on Wednesday, said: “ I want the case to be properly investigated and we want justice to be done. We are calling on the Commissioner of Police, Owoseni Fatai, Lagos State Government and the human right groups to intervene in this issue as the suspect's relatives are attempting to cover the case up. “
Another drama

While this was going on, another drama took place as parents of the victim alleged also that the Investigating Police Officer had forcibly taken their daughter to an Ikeja magistrate's court where the case was to be heard. The mother said she was at the police station with the suspect when the police officer took her child and insisted that she should not follow them to court. According to her, “They left the police station without me. I traced them to the court in Ikeja, later.”

Politics / NLC In Crucial Meeting Today by captainjerry: 7:46am On May 22, 2016
LEADERS of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, led by Ayuba Wabba, will meet today in Abuja, to critically review the ongoing nationwide strike and protests to force government to reverse the N145 pump price of petrol to the pre-Wednesday 11 price of N86.50.
The meeting is coming following appeals by the President of Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Yakubu Dogara, and the National Leader of All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to them to call off the industrial action and return to negotiating table with the Federal Government.
22The Wabba faction of the NLC, alongside the Joint Action Front, JAF, had, since Wednesday, May 18, embarked on a nationwide strike and mass protests.
The action had so far recorded low turn out with workers in Lagos State, the economic nerve centre of the country, Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, and Rivers State, shunning the strike.
On Thursday, the leadership of the National Assembly, in a meeting with the factional leaders, appealed to them to call off the strike.
Speaking with Sunday Vanguard, General Secretary of NLC, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson, said they would be meeting today to review the situation and determine the next line of action, saying, “We will be meeting tomorrow (today) to review the situation to determine the next line of action. After the meeting, a communique will be issued on the outcome.”
Equally, leaders of JAF will meet in Lagos today to review the situation, but have resolved to continue the action tomorrow.
A text message by Mr. Abiodun Aremu, JAF Secretary, said the meeting would take place at 2 pm to plan how to re-strategise the protest and mass action to force government to reverse the hike in the pump price of petrol and electricity tariff.

Politics / Trouble Looms As Amaechi, Sirika Engage In Power Tussle by captainjerry: 5:46pm On May 21, 2016
There is a mild war brewing in President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet between Rotimi Amaechi and Hadi Sirika, Signal reports.
Amaechi is Nigeria’s minister of Transport while Sirika is the minister of state for Aviation and the pair are said to be at loggerheads over reported acts of insubordination by the latter.
According to Signal, sources revealed that both ministers were close to exchanging physical blows on Monday save for the intervention of some civil servants and aides who were at the scene of the disagreement.
Amaechi and Sirika are said to be at loggerheads over acts of insubordination by the junior minister.
Sirika is reportedly reluctant to have Amaechi (a senior minister and direct boss) push him around. But the former Rivers state governor is on the other hand, not having any of Sirika’s acts and is working to put him in his place.
The reason for the junior minister’s acts, sources disclosed, is the fact that he is from President Buhari’s Katsina north senatorial district, where he served as a senator.
A source explained details of the incident to Signal thus: “It’s all about power tussle. Sirika thinks Amaechi is overstepping his boundaries and should mind his business as Transport Minister. But Amaechi is also in charge of Aviation.
“He is the senior minister, while Sirika as Minister of State for Aviation is junior minister. But Sirika sees himself as the President’s guy. So, he refuses to take directives from Amaechi and now Amaechi is feeling undermined.
“This has led to a big power play between both men. It is becoming so messy that even the official portraits of both ministers are missing at the airports. That’s why Amaechi was doing maritime summit in Lagos while Sirika was doing aviation in Abuja.”
When contacted on Wednesday to explain why both ministers’ portraits were absent at airports across the country, Yakubu Datti, the general manager, corporate communications, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), said: “We are awaiting the official portraits of the ministers. They are yet to send them in to us.”
Pressed further on whether the tussle between the ministers is the reason for the absence of their portraits at the airports, Datti explained that Amaechi’s portrait is at the airport, explaining that only Sirika’s image was not present.
“It is one ministry with one permanent secretary. So it is only the portrait of the senior minister that should be there,” he noted.
Civil servants in the aviation sector have expressed their embarrassment over the tussle between both ministers, especially because they have brought their misunderstanding to public glare.
A senior government official who pleaded anonymity, said: “It is a shame. Both ministers are embarrassing themselves publicly. It is a mess. And President Buhari on his part has been silent over this issue. He should call them to order immediately.
“The aviation and transport sectors are very key sectors of our economy. We can’t continue to have two adults who should know better fighting over the pettiness of who is in charge or control of what. When two elephants fight, unfortunately, it is the ground that suffers.
“Nigerians are the ones who will bear the brunt over this unnecessary squabble.”
Meanwhile, Nigerians have asked President Buhari to, without delay, remove Amaechi from his cabinet over corrution allegations leveled against the former Speaker of Rivers state House of Representatives.

Ayuba Wabba, the president of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has said the congress will next week review the indefinite nationwide strike against the hike in fuel price.
Waaba was speaking on Political Platform, a Ray Power FM programme, which was monitored in Abuja, Sahara Reporters informs.
He clarified that the NLC leadership will organise another meeting to review and evaluate the influence of the industrial action and see if the administration will change its decision to raise the pump price of petrol to N145.00 per litre.
The president of the organisation defined as untrue the rumour that the congress has been invited to another round of negotiations with the Federal government, adding the NLC and the government keep the positions they held before the strike.
Meanwhile, Wabba, said he could not give an exact date for the review of the strike, but gave the assurance that it will occur next week.
Ibe Kachikwu, minister of petroleum, has announced last week the removal of fuel subsidy and increase of fuel price.

Education / FG To Employ 500,000 New Teachers- Minister by captainjerry: 10:40am On May 20, 2016
The Federal Ministry of Education on Thursday reiterated its resolve to recruit 500,000 new teachers to enhance academic activities in the 104 Unity Colleges across the country. The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwuka, announced this while speaking with newsmen on the sideline of the inauguration of a female hostel at the Federal Science and Technical College, Yaba.
Anwuka said that teachers recruited by the various PTA’s of the colleges would be given opportunity for employment during recruitment. The Federal Government recently announced plan to recruit 500,000 teachers in order to bridge the gap of pupil-teacher ratio. The government also emphasised her desire to improve the quality of education in the country at all levels as well reposition the entire sector.
According to Anwuka, the teachers recruited by the PTAs are a demonstration of goodwill by the parents as critical stakeholders in the sector. He, however, pointed out that only qualified teachers would be given consideration to teach in the nation’s schools. ``The PTA teachers in the colleges will be given the opportunity for employment but they must avail themselves the requisite training.
``We will only employ qualified teachers and this is because we want only the best for our schools. ``If we end up employing the entire 500,000 that we intend to employ, it will be tied to getting the best with the requisite teacher training knowledge. ``Gone are the days when anyone would be saying I want employment, I want to teach, even without the necessary training.
``This had done a lot of damage to the system and we want to correct it now,’’ the minister said. He lauded the management of Federal Science and Technical College, Yaba, for the achievements and urged it to ensure that the projects were jealously guarded. Anwuka also promised to replace some of the non-functional and moribund machines and equipments in some of the workshop in the college.
Earlier in his address, the Principal of the college, Rev. Chris Ugorji, identified inadequate laboratories as one of the challenges facing the college. He stressed that the existing science laboratory was small and grossly inadequate, compared to the number of students offering science subjects in external examinations.
The principal said that the 12 workshops, which houses 19 trade subjects, have giant machines that required efficient power generating sets. He added that the institution’s limited financial resources had affected the school in the use of many of the imported facilities in the college.
Also speaking, the college’s PTA Chairperson, Mrs Oby Igwillo, said that the construction of the hostel was borne out of the need to cushion the effect of acute accommodation challenges in the college. She said that the construction of the 1,200 bed-space hostel took the association 15 months to complete. Igwillo described the completion of the project as a major relief to the parents and the college management.
