Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Pre-nysc Openings In Investment Bank by chikscfa2: 11:08am On Jun 16, 2009
Sagamite,

Perhaps you miss understand my intentions and position.
Firstly no I am not in the back office, I have bn working in the front-office since I joined IB here. I was not so much volunteering if u read my posts I was merely showing my interest and would do my due dilligence based on the response the guy gave. This was jus a case of testing out the water to see the kind of response I got.
I havent bn to nigeria in 10yrs and have no connections but need to relocate for family reasons. I am in my mid 20s and understand NYSC is a necessity so have bn looking for various avenues which I am still actively working but I just thought seeing what this guy had to offer wouldn't hurt.
So NO, I am not blindly volunteering to do an internship I did at 21. Anyway I will b visiting nigeria this summer so we will see.

Hi seun,

saw your posts regarding pre-nysc candidates for vacancies in investment banks in nigeria. I was wondering how this would apply to foreign graduates like myself. I am looking to relocate Nigeria in the August but am visiting first in july to try and sort things out.
In my position I have 4 years investment banking experience in london working in both mergers & acquisitions and Fixed & derivatives trading platforms. I also have a first degree i accounting & finance, masters in financial analysis & fund management, and also passed my CFA exams (chartered financial analyst exams).
So as you can see I am no longer a graduate due to my years of work experience but I would like to use this to get into nigeria sysytem.

My question is after the NYSC is done, Will the bank I served restore to my former position in london of senior associate or will i have to go through the whole graduate thing again? I have already done a training programme here in UK with my employers and as a result not too keen on doing anymore.
And also in what capacity will I work as under NYSC programme as I am an experienced hire?
I can send an e-mail regarding this matter if you think its worth us discussing it further.

thanks

please help if you have an idea of what I am talking about.
Career / Current Working Conditions & Opportunities In Nigerian Capital Markets by chikscfa2: 1:43am On Dec 15, 2008
Hello my fellow smart Africans. I joined this site a while ago but been so busy haven't had time to put many posts.

Anyway I was wondering, given this serious global economic downturn what are the working conditions (basic salary, bonus, financial instruments, scope etc) and opportunities in Nigeria at the moment.
I would like to relocate back to Nigeria in sept 2009 to see if i can add value to the economy but also have a decent standard of living.

Abit about myself; I have lived in London for almost 10years now. I have been educated and worked here since I was 16.
I have BSc in accounting & finance, Msc In Financial Analysis & Fund management. I am also a CFA level 3 candidate ( passed CFA level 2 this summer).
I have 2 years work experience working as an associate in an investment bank (DCF, LBO analysis, origination, financial modelling, etc).
I recently also worked another 2 years as a risk analyst in a Derivatives advisory firm in the city.

Now, my question to you guys is "what is the best way for someone in my position to go about finding similar jobs in Nigeria?". I have tried the banking websites like UBA, Zenith etc but they just instruct you to upload your CV and no replies (obviously I don't really have any strong connections either as I have been away for so long). Besides the roles are all entry level roles which I have already done here in UK.
Could someone please recommend decent firms ( asset management, private equity, corporate finance firms etc) that I could apply to or at least decent websites I could use to find them?
I would also like to know what the basic salary and bonus for some in position could be potentially.

I haven't set foot in Nigeria in almost 6 years and hence have not done NYSC. Would potential employers be willing to let me do my youth service with them rather doing it first then getting a job. I am planning on visiting Nigeria for afew weeks in easter though to see what I can find.

I would very much welcome comments from fellow professionals working in Nigeria on conditions I would face working Nigeria and how to go about finding the right opportunities.

gentleme,

To be honest with u, i believe there is no such thing as too difficult. If u want somethin bad enuff, u ll find a way. Its abit like living or fighting for ur family.
The thing with the CFA, try to undastand the concepts first by reading thru the main material, if u have a background in accounting or finance or maths like myself it is abit easier. also make sure u do lots of pratice questions a month b4 the exam. The CFA now offer mock exams I suggest u try them a month b4 the real thing.
MY trick was that I used a combination of the CFA core study material they provide for areas like ethics & economics and I use a study guide called schweser for areas like financial statement analysis (which is accounting ), fixed income (bonds) and equity valuation.
I will b happy to provide links if need for this study guide and also more light on how I have so far successfully tackled the exam if u want.
Lastly make ur highly motivated, sometimes studying and working depresses people it even gets to me sometimes but I jus thing of what it will do for me at the end of career, thats what keeps me going.

hey ty2001,

Thanks alot, I really appreciate ur reply. Of course I agree with you that my returning home should not just be money motivated but to add value which is one of my reasons anyway. But I need to look at ££ side too because I ll be bringing a new wife with me and she has to eat.
As it stands I have 3 interviews with banks back home. Rand Merchant Bank, Renaisance Capital (russian Bank) & the investment arm of world bank.
Thanks a lot for input and god bless, hopefully I will return the favour next time u need help.
