Gunmen killed 12 soldiers, Wednesday, in a pre-dawn raid on a military base in southeastern Niger’s Diffa region, a regular target of Boko Haram jihadists, the country’s defence ministry said.

Another eight soldiers were wounded in the attack on the Blabrine military unit, said the ministry statement read out on state radio, adding that this was a provisional toll.

The attack was “very probably” carried out by Boko Haram, the statement added. This was the latest in a string of increasingly brazen attacks near the West African country’s border with Nigeria, where the radical Islamist insurgency has claimed hundreds of lives.

The attack was launched at around 3:00 am (0200 GMT), a municipal source told AFP earlier on condition of anonymity.

A senior official in Diffa added that military equipment had been torched in the attack. Diffa, which borders the birthplace of Boko Haram in Northeastern Nigeria, has been hit by repeated cross-border attacks by the Nigerian jihadist group since 2015.

I listed these banks and the amounts debited, so you know which ones are the hardest hit, and thus more desperate to meet the target next time.
To make matters worse for the banks, the CBN immediately increased the lending ratio to 65%, so right now, either the banks loan out the money or they will lose half of it for nothing!

1. Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State expresses sympathy to the families of a woman and a child burnt to death this afternoon in a fire accident in Onitsha. The fire also razed structures, including shops, on Upper Iweka Road, Onitsha and at Ochanja market.

2. The accident occurred when a tanker laden with petroleum products, fell into a ditch and spilled its contents. A ball of fire resulted from this incident and quickly spread.

3. Men of the Anambra State Fire Service arrived on the scene in good time with their new equipment. For some reason, however, they were unable to quench the inferno. The angry mob on the scene prevented other fire trucks, including one from neighbouring Asaba in Delta State, from getting to the scene.

4. Governor Obiano regrets this unfortunate situation and has directed owners of properties affected by the tragic accident, including shop owners to report at Ekwueme Square on Friday October 18, 2019 to see how the Anambra State Government can assist them.

5. A panel will be set up immediately to determine the cause of the accident, why the firemen could not put out the fire and how the condition of the victims can be ameliorated.

6. Governor Obiano and his family pray for the repose of the souls of the woman and child who died in the accident. The Anambra State Government will assist their families in their burial.

7. Government calls on Citizens especially those directly affected to remain calm in the face of this disaster as it will do all within its powers to ameliorate the suffering of those involved.

A baby girl, 1-year-old was on Monday found dead at the back seat of her parent’s car in Tampa, Florida, United States. She was reported to have been forgotten at the back seat of the ”hot car” by her father who unknowingly took another car out.

The mother of the 1-year-old called police at around 6:30 p.m. after discovering her in their Jeep.

The girl was not breathing when cops arrived after sitting in the car for hours. Unconscious, she was transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead, according to MailOnline report.

“It appears it was a very busy morning for the family. They have several other children as well and in an effort to get everybody where they needed to go, the toddler was left in the backseat,’ said Steve Hegarty with the Tampa Police Department.

Tampa police said the death appears to be accidental, and there are no signs of foul play.

“The dad used the vehicle the toddler was in to take people to school, to work, and all that,’ Hegarty said. ‘[He] then took a separate car to work that caused him to forget the child was in the backseat of the car.”

The high temperature in Tampa Monday was 88, but factor in the humidity and it approached 100 degrees.

This is the 48th time this year that a child died in a hot car, according to the National Safety Council. They say, on average, 38 children under the age of 15 die each year from heatstroke after being left in a vehicle.

The uptick in these avoidable tragedies has caused automakers to take action. New cars will have rear seat reminder systems in most models by 2025, providing a fail-safe for parents.

The statement said even as the “governing party”, it recognises the importance of rigorous and intelligent interrogation of its policies and programmes by the opposition. It added that there are a lot to gain by Nigeria’s democracy and the country in an atmosphere of robust engagement by responsible and patriotic opposition.

“The political system we practice has important roles for the political parties outside of power. The system envisaged that such parties would provide alternative viewpoints and put the governing party on its toes.

“Instead, the PDP and their minions have in the name of opposition continued to distract the government and Nigerians with their post-election delusions, salacious fictions, conjured rifts in government circles and of course the lowest of it all, the pathetic and senseless Jubril of Sudan malicious tale, among other fake news. Tragic!

“It is sad that PDP has finally proved incapable of filling this important democratic space. The other mushroom parties are even worse. Some of the smaller parties are filled with incurable charlatans issuing infantile weekly press statements on behalf of the PDP. Our democracy deserves better”, APC added.

The APC Also stated that; “The so-called Coalition of United Political Parties CUPP, which could have filled the vacuum and engaged the APC administration in useful debates over governance, has become a comedy theatre group and frontline PDP minion. CUPP has the unenviable mandate to try to intimidate and blackmail important state institutions such as INEC, the judiciary, and security agencies, on behalf of PDP with the hope of gaining political advantage having been rejected by the majority of the voters.

“As the current administration tackles our national challenges and at a period we all should focus on issues of nation-building, the best PDP and its acolytes are offering is a distraction.

“While the PDP wallows in its obscene conducts, Nigeria under the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration will continue to consolidate on its status as Africa’s largest economy.

“Despite inheriting a battered economy, the administration is growing the economy after pulling it out of recession. The administration’s record investments in agriculture, social investments and infrastructure projects is paying off hugely. For one, we are now currently the largest rice-producing country in Africa as a direct result of conscientious efforts to diversify the economy.

“Our age-long corruption and impunity challenges is no longer the norm. The fight against corruption is on course. Collectively and individually, a reorientation in our national life and thinking is emerging.

“With the continued support of well-meaning Nigerians, we will do more for the shared prosperity, peace and progress of our dear nation”, said the APC.
