NYSC / Davido In Lagos State Nysc Camp by Chykeba(m): 12:35am On Sep 09, 2018
Davido was in the NYSC Camp a few days ago in Lagos perhaps for 30mins, put on white shirt, shorts, exercise shoes and addressed his “fellow” corps members who swamped on him. The State Coordinator, military and other agencies present gave him a reception akin to that accorded the Director General of the NYSC or some VIP. In fact, the NYSC officials were battling with Corps members for a chance to have a selfie with him. They considered his presence a great privilege.

The NYSC Act prescribes a mandatory three weeks orientation at the Camp after which the other 11 months be done in one’s place of primary assignment.

Clearly, Davido being a celebrity, famous and rich, was able to secure his posting to Lagos where he lives, spent a few minutes in the Camp and zoomed off the next day or so to the US for a musical tour with the full approvals of the NYSC management.

For other regular Nigerians, you will never be accorded such privileges. You have to wake up 3am, do parades, walk and jog long distances, meander through jungles etc for three weeks with foods like that of prisoners, under the sun and in the rain. After which you may be posted to some villages that I can’t pronounce, places without roads, communication, hospitals or any sign of modernity. In the process, many young Nigerian graduates lose their lives and the hopes of parents are cut short. As in many cases, the Federal Government gives almost nothing in compensation.

In 2011, many Youth Corps members were burnt alive, some hacked to death by supporters of Buhari in many parts of Northern Nigeria because they were used as ad-hoc INEC staff. In other parts, they are raped, maimed or murdered for rituals. Some have been killed by randy policemen or military officials, others in ghastly motor accidents while commuting to the various places. Some have drowned in rivers.

Nigeria is a unique country. Different rules apply depending on your background, financial clout or social status. Children of the rich are never exposed to the realities the average man faces and so they never really understand what happens in the country. For the records, Davido has served, albeit for 30mins, it doesn’t matter. I bet you, you’d see him again on POP day with his certificate.

Until we make Nigeria work for all of us, we will continue to have different rules for different folks!

Nairaland / General / King Jaja Of Opobo - The Story Of The Story We Heard by Chykeba(m): 12:29am On Sep 09, 2018
Born in Igboland and sold as a slave to a Bonny trader at the age of twelve, he was named Jubo Jubogha by his first master. He was later sold to Chief Alali, the head of the Opubo Annie Pepple Royal House. Called Jaja by the British, this gifted and enterprising individual eventually became one of the most powerful men in the eastern Niger Delta.

The Niger Delta, where the Niger empties itself into the Gulf of Guinea in a system of intricate waterways, was the site of unique settlements called city-states.

From the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, Bonny, like the other city-states, gained its wealth from the profits of the slave trade. Here, an individual could attain prestige and power through success in business and, as in the case of Jaja, a slave could work his way up to head of state. The House was a socio-political institution and was the basic unit of the city-state.

In the nineteenth century—after the abolition of the slave trade in 1807—the trade in slaves was supplanted by the trade in palm oil, which was so vibrant that the region was named the Oil Rivers area.

The Houses in Bonny and other city-states controlled both the internal and external palm oil trade because the producers in the hinterland were forbidden to trade directly with the Europeans on the coast; the Europeans never left the coast for fear of malaria.

Astute in business and politics, Jaja became the head of the Anna Pepple House, extending its activities and influence by absorbing other houses, increasing operations in the hinterland and augmenting the number of European contacts. A power struggle ensued among rival factions in the houses at Bonny leading to the breakaway of the faction led by Jaja. He established a new settlement, which he named Opobo. He became King Jaja of Opobo and declared himself independent of Bonny.

Strategically located between Bonny and the production areas of the hinterland, King Jaja controlled trade and politics in the delta. In so doing, he curtailed trade at Bonny and fourteen of the eighteen Bonny houses moved to Opobo.

In a few years, he had become so wealthy that he was shipping palm oil directly to Liverpool. The British consul could not tolerate this situation. Jaja was offered a treaty of “protection”, in return for which the chiefs usually surrendered their sovereignty. After Jaja’s initial opposition, he was reassured, in vague terms, that neither his authority nor the sovereignty of Opobo would be threatened.

Jaja continued to regulate trade and levy duties on British traders, to the point where he ordered a cessation of trade on the river until one British firm agreed to pay duties. Jaja refused to comply with the consul’s order to terminate these activities, despite British threats to bombard Opobo. Unknown to Jaja, the Scramble for Africa had taken place and Opobo was part of the territories allocated to Great Britain. This was the era of gunboat diplomacy, where Great Britain used her naval power to negotiate conditions favorable to the British.

NYSC / NYSC Implements Biometric Scanning For Corps Members To Monitor Ghost Members.. by Chykeba(m): 12:37am On Mar 04, 2017
THE NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE CORPS, NYSC INTRODUCES MONTHLY BIOMETRIC CLEARANCE TO CHECK AND MONITOR THE SYSTEM AGAINST GHOST CORPERS.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has introduced a biometric technology for the corps members’ monthly clearance in South West, a development that will expose those who absent themselves from their places of primary assignment.

NYSC Introduce New Monthly Biometric
The Director General of NYSC, Brig-Gen Suleiman Kazure who stated this in Ibadan at the opening ceremony of the training workshop on Biometric Clearance of Corps Members in Local Government Areas in SouthWest with the theme “Ensuring Accountability in Corps members activities using ICT, said that biometric technology will not only address absenteeism during service year but will also address the problems of irregular signatures leading to non-payment of monthly allowance, and poor collation and storage of data of corps members.

The training was organised for all heads of corps inspection and monitoring branches, ICT desk officers, zonal and local government inspectors of the South-West.

Kazure, who was represented by NYSC Director of Corps Welfare, Mrs Victoria Okakwu said, “This new process has received great ovation from the public for its positive impact in areas such as elimination of sharp practices perpetuated by fraudulent individuals and reduction of errors in our data and workload on our staffs, corps memners and other stakeholders.

“Furthermore, the improvement on the new process also brought about the introduction of the use of biometrics for mobilisation and registration of corps members at orientation camps which has not only helped in fast tracking the process, but also reduced impersonation and registration in prozy including ineligible graduates.”

Kazure noted that the feedback from the North West zone, South East zone and the two pilot locations of Lagos and Abuja had been very encouraging and positive, adding that he believed that South West zone will also be successful.

He said the training was organised to give participants the requisite knowledge in the IT-based clearance and monitoring of corps members to eliminate the practices of payment of allowances to corps members who are not on ground to serve their father land.

The NYSC boss urged all official of the scheme to shun any act that may be detrimental to the success of the innovation.

In her speech, the NYSC Director of ICT, Mrs Christy Uba said the biometric module was designed to embrace adequate monitoring and monthly clearance of Corps members.

According to her, it keeps record of absenteeism, checkmates truancy, impersonation and other vices which tends to undermine the aims and objectives of the scheme.

NYSC / How To Officially Apply For Nysc Redeployment And Relocation by Chykeba(m): 1:28am On Feb 11, 2017
NYSC Relocation and redeployment of corp members is a thing that is open to any corp member. NYSC has made it possible for corp member who has genuine reasons for redeployment and not being able to in the state posted, to request for a change of state. And that’s exactly what is called “NYSC Redeployment/Relocation”. NOTE such reasons must be genuine and reasonable.

Below Are two Ways To Apply For NYSC Relocation and Redeployment.

There are only two ways through which you can apply for Relocation and get approved afterwards.

1. Applying on Camp: One of the major ways, and of course, the initial way of applying for Nysc Relocation and Redeployment is applying for it on camp.

During the 21 days Orientation course on camp, interested corp members will be given the opportunity to apply for Relocation at the 2nd week on camp.

A form will be given out to any interested corper to fill. This form will require, among other things, the corper to state the reason he/she wants a relocation and also give reasonable evidences to back up any excuse given. Together with the form, you will also be asked to submit an application letter.

2. Applying Online After Camp: Before, it’s very difficult or rather impossible to get a Relocation approval after camping is over. But now, it has being made possible and easier to apply for relocating by simply allowing corp members to apply online even after camp is over. Some believes it’s not possible to get approval for relocation until 3 months after camp. But i will tell you, that’s also not true. You can apparently get approved for relocation even after 2 weeks of application.

STEPS TO APPLY ONLINE AND GET APPROVAL

1. Visit the Relocation portal: that is the Nysc portal website

2. Sign in with your email and password (same as the ones you used for NYSC registeration)

3. Click on “Relocation”

4. Fill in your details appropriately into the fields provided .

And That’s all. You will be afterwards notified through text messages and mails about developments on your application. That’s the same way you will be notified when it’s approved or otherwise. How to Print Nysc Online Relocation and Redeployment Letter

1. Log in to Nysc official website

2. Log in with your email and password

3. Go to “Manage Relocation” and click on it

4. Make a payment of #1000 and wait for it to redirect you after successful payment

5. Print your payment receipt. It’s your evidence of payment in case any unexpected issue arrises latter

6. You will be redirected and now allowed to print your Nysc Relocation letter online

7. Do not forget to make copies of the letter and keep for reference .

There are two procedures involved. The first is for students who are still within the range of 48 maximum credits and the other is for those seeking to register above 48 credits per session.

(A) Students who have concerns regarding registration (e.g. error in registration) can add or drop courses. This should be done online without downloading any form by the affected students. The concerned students are required to pay online and effect changes as approved by their Level Adviser. Students should note that ADD/DROP of courses should be done within the period stipulated online by the University as lateness will not be condoned.

(B.)Procedure for Additional Credit(s) after the normal 48 credits.
1. Payment for the Additional credit(s) is done at the prevailing cost of N1,000.00 and must be online.

2. The form is printed online from the portal and manually completed. Note that the permission of the Head of Department and approval of the Dean are required when you are adding above the maximum of 24 credits allowed per semester.

3. The form is to be forwarded to the Deputy Registrar (Academic Support Services) through the Dean with a copy of Course Registration Form and payment receipt attached to the form and the approval of the Dean, as related to the (2) above.

4. After approval by Academic Support Services, changes requested will be effected and an alert will also be sent to the concerned student who should print a new Course Registration Form from the portal. This form supersedes the earlier one.

5. The approved Additional Credit Form; Payment Receipt and old Course Form must be attached to the new Course Form and forwarded to the Level Adviser and Faculty Officer for endorsement.

6. Please note that the Academic Support Services will not treat any request for more than 24 credits per semester, if all the requirements in 2 and 3 are not met.
PLEASE NOTE THAT YOUR REGISTRATION IS NOT COMPLETE EVEN AFTER SUBMISSION ONLINE UNTIL YOUR FORMS ARE ENDORSED BY YOUR LEVEL ADVISER AND FACULTY OFFICER WITHIN THE REGISTRATION PERIOD.

PAYMENT PROCEDURE

Students are to note that all payments shall be online and shall be through the use of ATM cards on the University Portal.

Note: ATM Cards on the InterSwitch platform are supported, including Verve and Master Cards.
STUDENTS ARE ADVISED TO BEWARE OF FRAUDSTERS IN THE HANDLING THEIR PAYMENT CARD DETAILS AND REPORT ANY FRAUDULENT ACT TO THE SECURITY UNIT, UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN.

Education / AMAZING: 2 UNILAG Female Students Graduate With 5.0 CGPA by Chykeba(m): 4:24am On Jan 18, 2017
THE UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS, UNILAG GRADUATES TWO (2) FEMALE STUDENTS WITH A CGPA OF 5.0

Two graduating students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has attained the record of Mr. Ayodele Dada in 2014/2015 academic session, by having a perfect 5.00 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in the 2015/2016 session.

Oyindamola Omotuyi emerged as the best graduating student from the department of Systems Engineering while Bankole Titilayo Taiwo graduated from the department of Cell Biology and Genetics.

Omotuyi, a Beautiful 22-year-old student, says she was encouraged by her school fellowship to do well academically and spiritually.

“The Redeemed Christian Fellowship had overcomers award and encouraged us to do well academically even spiritually so I was challenged by it.”

When Asked how she managed to graduate with a perfect CGPA, she attributed her success to God, hard work, and her course mates.

“Well, I must say it’s been God all through. He provided wisdom at every point. Also, He brought my course mates and friends who helped me immensely.

“I worked a lot with people. It’s good to include that there were challenges but the beautiful thing is that they were for a short while. It was not easy but considering the fact that God provided strength all the way, I would say it was easy with God.”

Omotuyi gave tips on how she achieved the perfect CGPA, in the hope of helping others who seek to replicate her accomplishment.

“It’s good to read but yet read rightly. Ride on the wings of those that have gone ahead. Ask questions about the nitty gritty of the course and what the lecturer wants.

“During exams, write what your lecturer want to see not what you want to write. Work with your classmates.”

Taiwo, a 21-year-old, said a 5.00 CGPA was not her target but she wanted to have a first class degree and “an interesting lifestyle”.

“It’s possible to strike a balance with social and academic commitments if the individual is good with time management and self-study. It wasn’t easy to graduate with 5.00 GPA because there were a lot of challenges but God made it easy and I overcame.

“My advice to students is that they should be determined, have self-confidence, trust God in everything, set their goals in having a good result and work towards it, and they should be the best in whatever they do.

“There will be a lot of challenges though but they will overcome end don’t forget there’s always light after every dark tunnel, success don’t come easily.”

For people who don't understand what this means, it means getting an A in all courses throughout your stay in the higher institution..
