Politics / Lockdown: FG Replies Bishop Oyedepo & Oyakhilome On Opening Of Churches by Citizenshelm: 6:09pm On May 07, 2020

The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 has cleared the air on why markets and shops are allowed to open while churches are still under lock and key, CH Reports

Speaking on Thursday at the daily COVID-19 briefing in Abuja, Dr. Sani Aliyu, the National Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 said that the easing of the lockdown is to allow for minimal economic activity, and not for entertainment.

Dr. Aliyu made the clarification when he was asked by a journalist to respond to calls from Bishop David Oyedepo and Pastor Chris Oyakhilome for churches to be opened since markets have been allowed to function.

Recall Bishop Oyedepo had queried the logic behind allowing a market to open which according to him is not orderly, and closing a church which he said is more orderly.

“It is important for us to know that the easing of the lockdown does not mean that COVID-19 has been defeated. It is purely to allow for economic activity to go on, while at the same time the public is protected,” Dr. Aliyu said.

“We have allowed markets to open three times a week between 8 am to 3 pm, the same applies to the abattoir. We have also allowed the supermarkets to open between 8 am and 3 pm as well as eateries.

“…and the same way we have banned bars, clubs, gardens, entertainment centers, etc. While we have allowed this relaxation, at the time we put in place some enforcement, for example, we are making sure we don’t have more than 20 people congregating.

“It must be noted that these measures are not put in place for the PTF, but for the general good of the public, our health, and our well being.”

Senator Dino Melaye has said that all political office holders in Nigeria, past and present, including himself, have failed Nigerians, CodedHits

The former Kogi lawmaker made the blunt remark on Tuesday in a post on Twitter as he continued his disapproval of the gradual easing of the coronavirus-induced lockdown in Lagos, Ogun and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“Everyone who held and is holding any political office in Nigeria whether elective or appointed including me has fail,” Melaye wrote.

“We sold crude oil for 64 years but we couldn’t feed our citizens for just 2 weeks of lockdown!! Well, the God of the poor will judge us all. It’s time to reboot.”

Normal activities have gradually begun in Lagos and the FCT following the president’s order after a five-week lockdown to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Ogun State, however, will begin its gradual easing on May 11 after failing to simultaneously begin the lockdown with Lagos and the FCT.

Politics / Professor Isa Hashim Is Dead by Citizenshelm: 4:29pm On May 03, 2020

Less than 24 hours after the death of Tafida Abubakar, the emir of Rano in Kano State, another elder statesman and community leader has passed on.

Isa Hashim, a retired professor who held the title of Jarman Kano in the Kano emirate council, died on Sunday morning, according to a family member.

The 86-year-old died at his home, following a short illness, his daughter, Dija Hashim, told PREMIUM TIMES.

Details of his ailment were not immediately available but a family member said Mr Hashim’s health deteriorated following the deaths of some of his childhood friends in quick succession.

Mr Hashim was a retired professor of political science, administrator and author.

He enrolled into the then Kano Native Authority in 1948 as a first school leaver and rose to the position of a permanent secretary before he retired in 1979.

Upon his retirement, he joined Bayero University Kano (BUK) where he taught for many years.

Suspicious deaths continue

Mr Hashim’s death is the latest among increasing deaths of the elderly in Kano.

At least two independent studies conducted in the last two weeks established a surge in number of deaths in the densely populated metropolis.

In a BBC Hausa interview Friday evening, Nasir Gwarzo, who led a federal government medical intervention team to Kano, said his team suspects strong link between the increased deaths and coronavirus.

He said the pandemic has passed its two initial stages of transmission in the city and gone into the “scary stage of community transmission”.

Career / Panic In Access Bank As MD Herbert Wigwe Announces Plan To Retrench 75% Of Staff by Citizenshelm: 8:47am On May 01, 2020

Herbert Wigwe, the group managing director of Access Bank, has mulled the bank’s planned mass retrenchment of its workforce over what he said was the outcome of the COVID-19 lockdown.

The bank boss who spoke via video conferencing in a town hall meeting with the bank’s staff said those to be affected by the mass retrenchment are 75% of the bank’s staff, most of whom are outsourced and are offering “non-essential services.”

“We probably don’t need as many securitymen as required, even to the fact that we are not gonna have all our branches open between now and December. We don’t need all the tea girls. We don’t need all the cleaners. We don’t need all the tellers etcetera, etcetera,” Mr. Wigwe said in a video obtained by CodedHits on Thursday, April 30, 2020.

“The second has to do with our professional cost. Now that is one that is very tricky and it is tricky because I do understand and appreciate that its gonna, you know, bring its own pain to staff. We basically have to make the adjustments the same way you sounded when we spoke 10 days ago with respect to basically cutting down cost.

“I will be the first to take the hit and I’m gonna take the largest pay cut, which would be as much as 40 percent. The rest we would have to cascade right through the institution. Everybody may have to make some adjustments of some sort.”

Mr. Herbert Wigwe, one of the principal conveners of CA-COVID, a coalition of Nigeria’s private sector against COVID-19 said the proposed measures are aimed at keeping the bank afloat in the face of the economic realities of COVID-19.

CA-COVID which is led by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, is credited to have raised about N30 billion, feeding up to 1.7 million Nigerian, ordered 400,000 coronavirus test kits, and building isolation centres worth over N500 million isolation.

Access Bank has been giving its involvement with the COVID-19 intervention a strong PR push, sending out regular emails to news platforms, including CodedHits. The running thread of the press statements from the bank’s publicist is that Mr. Wigwe is leading the coalition.

Industry watchers believe that Mr. Wigwe’s retrenchment policy affects the most vulnerable of his staffers and will be counter-productive for many families especially the poor if the books of the bank truly show just as his philanthropy does, that it has the capacity to cushion the effect at such a precarious moment in history.

President Muhammadu Buhari had placed a one-month partial lock-down in Lagos, Abuja, and Ogun States. A measure that was intended to check the spread of the coronavirus is due to be lifted on Saturday, May 2, 2020. The president, however, announced a nationwide 8pm to 6am curfew and a lockdown of Kano, the new epicenter for COVID-19 in Nigeria.

Beginning on April 28, 2020, the Central Bank of Nigeria lifted the suspension of cheque clearing effectively unlocking the banking industry which had been placed at the end of March.

Experts said that Wigwe’s announcement may be an indication of subsisting financial distress in Access Bank. They believe that the one-month partial lockdown of Lagos, Abuja, and Ogun States should not call for a mass retrenchment in a healthy bank

A Nigerian lady identified as Adà órà nilé has publicly throw light upon how her father was killed by a his jealous friend, CodedHits

My dad was killed by his best friend because of jealousy, he came to house and dropped the jazz which happened that my grand Mum crossed it too, they both died the same day in different motor accidents and this man still rushed took my dads corpse to the mortuary And told them to embalm the body, the next day someone came to tell us that my dad appeared to her in the dream and told her that when the accident happened he did not die but after sometime he wanted to return to his body was it was already not fit for him to return.

He promised to wipe away whoever killed him and Seeds away from the face of the earth, they went to the mortuary and indeed his body was embalmed. Some people said it was my Mum many turned against her. But she stood strong and kept on praying. Years later we received a message That our dads best friend has gone mad because he keeps shouting my father's name. He was not mad he was confessing, he was actually seeing my dad and my grandma in the room, no one was seeing anything, I think they were doing something to him he kept on shouting, he narrated how He has tried to kill my dad two times through higher killers and a different accident but they did not work so he went to a stronger juju man who gave gave him a powder to drop where my dad would pass.

How the juju was made for only my father but unfortunately my grandma also crossed it where he kept it in our house, he said a lot after all he died and was thrown away his people was so disgusted and refused to bury him.

A year later three of his children drowned in the stream.

The thing is my Mum kept warning my dad about him but he never listened, he thought my Mum was just being paranoid. Today makes it 20 years but these memories are still fresh in my memory, my Dad was a good person. His only crime was trusting his best friend and telling him of his plans to move out of the country with his family, my father died two weeks to living the country Keep resting in peace Livinus Eburuo Aka Abia father You will forever be missed 20 years ago but everything still feels like yesterday This is the first time i'm sharing this, because i've found courage to talk about it.

Business / Central Bank Of Nigeria CBN Resumes Dollar Sales For Smes, School Fees by Citizenshelm: 4:37pm On Apr 29, 2020
Early today, April 29, 2020, Centre Bank Of Nigeria release a press on Resumes Dollar Sales For SMEs, School Fees, which was signed by Director of Corporate Communications, Isaac Okorafor, CodedHits

In view of the gradual easing of the COVID-19 lockdown both globally and in Nigeria, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has resumed provision of foreign exchange to all commercial banks for onward sales to parents wishing to pay schools fees and SMEs wishing to make essential imports needed to revamp economic activities across the country. In particular, the CBN is resuming the provision of over US$100 million per week for both categories.

The CBN has also made complete arrangements to resume foreign exchange sales to the BDC segment of the market for business travels, personal travels, and other designated retail uses, as soon as international flights resume.

With these actions, the CBN wishes to reiterate that it is adequately meeting the needs of all legitimate users, and our continued capacity to do so should not be in doubt. There is therefore no need for panic by any end-user that could necessitate recourse to illegitimate sources and spike in foreign exchange rates.

Given this, the Bank has ramped up its surveillance of the foreign exchange markets for speculators, smugglers and other illegal users, and will take decisive actions against anyone/institutions involved in such nefarious activities

Health / A Simple Way To Bring Meaning And Purpose Into Your Life Amid COVID-19 Lockdown by Citizenshelm: 4:59am On Apr 28, 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic is shifting the dynamics of work, parenting, and the home. With these changes comes new (or amplified) sources of stress, especially for women, who regardless of whether they work outside the home, bear two-thirds of the work it takes to run a household and a family.

That’s where Fair Play comes in — a system created by organizational management expert Eve Rodsky that helps couples rebalance domestic responsibilities so that both people in the relationship can thrive. In this series, Rodsky will draw on her knowledge from creating Fair Play, and offer tips to empower you and your partner to share the load while navigating this new normal together.

For some, the silver lining of shelter-in-place may be an uptick in creativity and self-discovery. I continue to hear the most inspiring stories from men and women all over the country who are finding or reclaiming their “Unicorn Space” in social isolation.

I define Unicorn Space as the active pursuit of what makes you uniquely you and that you share with the world. Even in small doses — which is all most of us have time for right now — Unicorn Space is essential to your ongoing sense of self, the health of your partnership, and your ability to model what a full and meaningful life looks like to your children, friends, colleagues, and community at large.

Here are some examples I’ve seen:

Max, the lead singer of a rock band, has created online singing lessons for kids who want to rock.
Helen has finally achieved one of her life’s goals: she’s learned how to make bagels.
Lucas is learning to play the piano for the first time — at age 50!
Johanna has started an organic vegetable garden in her side yard.
We must balance this global moment of grief by infusing our lives with meaning and purpose that goes beyond caretaking and basic survival. Tapping into that “thing” that makes each of us come alive is vital to our mental health and our sense of self.

Even if only for a few minutes every day, engage in an activity (beyond household responsibilities) that feels meaningful and brings you joy. Think about an active pursuit that gives your life a lift, and that you can share with the world via phone, email, social media, or from your front porch. If you find yourself making an excuse like “I don’t have time,” you must make the time. Continue to rebalance the division of labor in your home so that you and your partner both schedule time for Unicorn Space into your daily calendar.

What happens next? Remember, the most direct and effective way to avoid imbalance in your relationship is to check in daily. It’s all about communication!

The Federal Government has commenced the disbursement of N20,000 Conditional Cash Transfer to indigent households (poor) at the Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

This is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to help reduce the effect of President Muhammadu’s lockdown order following the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadia Umar-Farouk, said on Wednesday while kickstarting the disbursement that due to the scourge of COVID-19, the Federal Government is giving out N20,000 per person for the next four months starting from March 2020.

She explained that the President during his broadcast last week directed that the Conditional Cash Transfer should be given in advance of two months.

“We have directed immediate cash transfer to the poorest and most vulnerable households in the country,” she said.

“Because of this COVID-19, the vulnerable groups have to expand, because we are aware that there are people who live on daily wage, so we are also going to look at those groups of people to see how we can get this food relief intervention to them in this period.”

Health / Italian Diagnosed With Coronavirus To Be Discharged Soon – Osagie Ehanire by Citizenshelm: 10:32am On Mar 12, 2020
Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire says that the Italian man, the index case of Coronavirus in Nigeria, will be discharged soon.

The Minister disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja during a conference with the diplomatic community about measures taken by the Federal Government to tackle the spread of Covid-19 in Nigeria.

Dr Ehanire stressed that there are only two confirmed cases in Nigeria as of now.

This according to him includes the index case and the second who was a primary contact of the index case.

The 44-year-old Italian citizen was confirmed to have the COVID-19 after series of tests were carried out by the Virology Laboratory of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital in February.

The Commissioner of Health in Lagos, Professor Akin Abayomi had earlier disclosed that the health of the Coronavirus patient was improving.

He said this on February 29 while addressing journalists and giving an update on the patient who was being managed at the Mainland Hospital in Yaba, Lagos,

Professor Abayomi urged the residents not to panic and assured them that the government was putting necessary measures in place to curb the spread of the virus.

Covid-19: A Pandemic

Coronavirus outbreak has become a global threat with the World Health Organisation (WHO) describing it as a pandemic.

WHO Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters in Geneva on Wednesday that the spread of the coronavirus is frightening.

“COVID-19 can be characterised as a pandemic. We have never before seen a pandemic sparked by a coronavirus.

“The spread and severity of the deadly new coronavirus, which has infected more than 110,000 people and killed more than 4,000, is alarming,” Ghebreyesus said.

Politics / Sanusi Living 'Like A Prisoner' In Nasarawa, Police, NSCDC Deny Visitors Access by Citizenshelm: 9:36am On Mar 12, 2020
EXCLUSIVE: Sanusi ‘living like a prisoner’ as police, NSCDC deny visitors access

Muhammad Sanusi II, deposed emir of Kano, has been living like a prisoner since he was taken to Awe local government area of Nasarawa state, TheCable can report.

According to residents, some visitors have been denied access to Sanusi, who was taken away from Kano on Monday evening.

On Wednesday, TheCable counted at least 30 police officers and officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) guarding the exile home of the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

For most of the day, three to five police stood at the gate, preventing people aside a few of the former emir’s family and officials of the government from going in to see Sanusi.

The rest of the police officers in the vicinity were at different corners — spotting unsuspecting persons taking pictures or videos of the house and their colleagues.

During prayer times, only one or two policemen man the gate, while the rest go to pray at a nearby Mosque.

TheCable spoke to four police officers at different times, seeking entry into the house, but they all said they had “strict orders” not to let anyone in.

The first police officer, wielding an AK-47 rifle, said: “No matter how far you have travelled, I’m sure my colleagues will not allow you in”.

One of the supporters of Sanusi who was denied access to him but tried taking pictures of the house, was caught by the police officers, who seized his phones, asked him to hold his ears, and undergo the punishment better known as “frog jumps”.

Residents who spoke to TheCable said they have seen Sanusi only a few times, but that they only stood outside the gate, as they were denied entrance.

“Since he came here, he has not stepped outside. Even when we pray at the mosque beside the house, he does not come out to join us in prayers, and many people here would like that,” Ibrahim Akilu, a resident, told TheCable.
“When he came here with heavy security, he was received by emirs and chiefs around here, including the emir of Awe.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8DDnqH4a8o

“He is just living like a prisoner; most of the people coming are not allowed to see him. His family came to see him, some see him and go, a few of them are still around.”

A teacher in one of the government schools in Awe, who asked not to be named for fear of victimisation, said they heard that Sanusi “will not be allowed to leave the house for three months”.

“Sanusi is alone in the house; the family members come and go. I do not think they are allowed to live with him. We don’t know how long he will be here, it’s only the government that can tell. But the rumours are that he will be here for three months,” he said, confirming what another resident had earlier told TheCable.

“His coming has not changed anything positively here — but let us give it time.”
Ibrahim Muktar, attorney-general of Kano, had said the state government did not banish the ex-emir from the state — contradicting what kind of treatment Sanusi has been receiving.

“If you listen to the secretary to the state government when he was addressing the press on the issue of the removal of the emir from office, there was nowhere he stated that the emir was banished from Kano state,” he had said on Wednesday.

“So, the decision of the government when the emir was removed on Monday was that he was removed from office and a new one appointed.

The issue of banishment was not part of the decision of the Kano state government.”

Sanusi’s lawyers had asked for the release of the former emir, saying his forced relocation to Nasarawa is illegal and unconstitutional.

Health / Coronavirus Can Be Defeated Like Ebola – Atiku by Citizenshelm: 3:09pm On Feb 28, 2020

Nigeria businessman, philanthropist and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar GCON has called on President Muhammadu Buhari’s government to defeat Coronavirus with the same zeal the nation fought Ebola outbreak in 2014.

An Italian, who arrived Lagos from Milan on Tuesday, tested positive to the virus, health officials said on Friday.

He said: “Now that Nigeria has had her first confirmed case of the Corona Virus infestation, via a citizen of Italy, who visited Lagos and Ogun states, I would want to offer my patriotic counsel to the government of General @MBuhari, on how best to tackle this issue.

“It is more important to secure human lives than to secure an economy. We also need to invest in early detection facilities at our airports.

“But above all, Nigeria must not panic whether at government or individual levels. We have defeated Ebola before, and we can defeat this present predicament.”

The former presidential candidate added: “This crisis is an opportunity to show that we are first and foremost Nigerians and that we have no other country but our dear fatherland, which we must work together to keep healthy and secure.”
