Religion / Religion, A Blessing Or A Curse To Humanity?~ S. Didia by compass22: 10:38pm On Feb 10, 2021
Religion, A Blessing or A Curse To Humanity?~ S. Didia

Let's discuss.

When I write about religion, I do not have the intention of ridiculing any brand. My lamentation is not targeted at any branch of religion but the tree itself.

Observing the rhetorics of human existence will make any sane human understand the fact that religion has led many nations and individuals to war, it has broken families, separated friends and have incited the deaths of thousands. Religion has also sabotaged well meaning struggles, people have learnt not to side with the truth but to show sympathy for people of same religion.

Religion has separated lovers. I know a lot of people who couldn't get married because their parents wanted them to have spouse of same religion.

People are suffering a lot of religious inflicted pains and this has made me to think that the world would have been better of without religion.

Religion / God Is Evil" Is God Evil? Please Be The Judge. Let's Discuss by compass22: 10:09pm On Feb 10, 2021
God is Evil"

Is God evil? Please be the judge.

It was on a saturday night at exactly 11pm Nigeria time and Sofido was already set to attend Ben's all white birthday party. Ben times without number had announced the date and venue of his birthday to the hearing of his entire course mates, his frequent announcement and reminder made his birthday an event every partying human wish never to miss. Ben is very rich, his outfit on daily basis betrays that fact.

As a lover of fendi designers, Ben will always put on a fendi shirt, trousers, wrist watch, shoes, underwear and even a fendi handkerchief, it was such that he even puts on fendi face mask to match each of his outfit. Each time Ben comes to class he is a beauty to behold, sometimes we roughly estimate Ben's outfit and it was shocking to discover that each time Ben comes to class his clothes and accessories worth about six hundred and fifty thousand naira.

We were certain that the birthday will be the talk of the town because when Ben attend other people's birthday he spends lavishly how much more his own birthday. I vowed never to trade the party for anything.

My Dad as usual came out of his room to inspect the house, his inspection is to check if the house was properly locked, security lights on and windows closed. He saw how restless I was and questioned me to find out the cause of my restlessness but he got no reasonable response from me. In his wisdom he suspected I want to leave the house and was probably waiting for him to sleep. He advised me not to leave the house, while he advised me he enumerated possible dangers and consequences of late night outing, to him I could be robbed, kidnapped or even get killed, while he advised me I felt he was old fashioned and doesn't understand the realities of the 21st century.

He spoke for thirty minutes after which he retired to his room, the party was to start exactly 12am and I was still at home by 11:30pm, I hurried up, took one of his cars and left for the party, as envisaged the party was a show of class and a clear definition of enjoyment.

There were so much to eat and drink and even ladies were on standby, all you need is wave your hands in the direction of your desired lady and she is yours for the night, the ladies were so numerous that you can afford to have as many as five all at once, a gesture enjoyed by Ogoni people because of their strength and skillful nature on matters pertaining to romance.

It was a wonderful day, I took plenty of my favorite Heineken beer and some assorted meat. The party was scheduled for all night but at exactly 3am I decided to leave, Immediately I stood up to readjust my trousers which I had adjusted early to enable my stomach accommodate more food some men on uniform surrendered the venue of the party with heavily loaded guns, I looked at them closely and I was unable to associate thier uniform with a force or any paramilitary. The seriousness on their faces and there number made me realize that we were headed for trouble, I was able to count about twenty five of them, it was later that we realized they were thirty seven and not twenty five.

Politics / Religion Or Rationality? Nigerian Man Narrates His Story. by compass22: 9:43pm On Feb 10, 2021
Let's discuss.

I agree that I am both a rational and a religious being. like me, majority of humans are both religious and rational, some humans me inclusive believe in God and his son Jesus Christ, others believe in Mohammed while the rest believe in ancestral spirits and gods too numerous to mention.

When I walk round on Sundays I see lots of religious organizations with different believes, I come on facebook I see lots of posts portraying contrary views about Christianity, I see people who get offended each time their faith is attacked, some are ready to fight each time their religious leaders are questioned. I have seen some who believe that anyone who attacks a religious leader will be killed or struck with sudden illness, some believe that whatever their religious leaders say is very correct, I have also seen women who respect their religious leaders more than their husbands, I have seen religious leaders scatter lots of homes with unfounded prophecies.

I have also seen men who should be very rational behave irrationally because of religion, few months ago, I was with a very senior friend, he brought out olive oil and started drinking, I was very disappointed and I began to make him understand how ignorant he was to have done that, for the records, olive oil is like normal kings vegetable oil used for frying, it's not meant for drinking, all he told me was that I should stick to what works for me.

Then I asked, is the Bible not a rational book? the Bible is not just rational it's also scientifically accurate, before scientists discovered that the earth was spherical the Bible already foretold it more than two thousand years ago.

I have been forced to believe that ignorance is a necessity and a creterion for being religious, many religious people are afraid that each time they question certain doctrines that an unknown religious being will strike them dead but that's a lie. I can remember how Marthin Luther king jnr and his followers questioned some doctrines which now resulted to what we enjoy today as freedom of worship.

It's necessary to state without hesitation that rationality is needed in religion as the maker of religion has given us freewill to choose between good and evil, wise king Solomon would have told the two women to go that God will fight for the child and it's owner but no he used his God given rationality to settle the matter.

It's instructive for religious people to understand that God can not be mocked, we must always wear our thinking cap and ask questions when necessary, we must do what is right irrespective of what we are told in our places of worship, we must understand that the Bible is available to all to read and understand and that nobody has monopoly of understanding the Bible.

I have seen plenty of people with ulcer fast for weeks, they claim that since they are doing the work of God that no harm will come to them, it's a pity.

As humans, as higher animals the difference between us and other animals is rationality, think about it.

Politics / NEWS Update: Any ‎bandit Arrested In Kaduna State, Will Be Killed. Gov. El-rufa by compass22: 2:59pm On Feb 09, 2021
NEWS Update: Any ‎Bandit Arrested in Kaduna State, Will Be killed. Gov. El-Rufai!

Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai has described ongoing peace moves initiated by renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, with some bandits operating in the North-West of Nigeria as a waste of time.

Governor El-Rufai posited that it will be difficult for bandits who were previously in the business of selling cows for N100, 000 to dump their arms because of the millions they rake in as ransom from kidnap victims.

The Governor, who made the assertion on Monday while speaking on BBC Hausa Service, said the northern region need to tackle insecurity and criminality headon and not negotiate with bandits.

Politics / Alleged N7.2bn Fraud:court Temporarily Stops Orji Kalu’s Re-trial. by compass22: 10:34am On Feb 09, 2021
Alleged N7.2bn Fraud:Court Temporarily Stops Orji Kalu’s Re-trial.

Dr.Orji Kalu
The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court on Monday, granted former Abia State Governor and Senate Chief Whip, Dr.Orji Kalu leave to challenge his retrial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged money laundering charges.

The Court presided over by Justice Inyang Ekwo ordered that the planned re-arraignment of the Senator over the alleged N7.1billion money-laundering charges be put on hold pending the determination of the legal questions raised against his retrial.

Senator Kalu,in a motion exparte which was moved by his counsel, Prof. Awa Kalu (SAN),
prayed for an order of Court stopping the EFCC from retrying him on same alleged money laundering charges preferred against him.

He averred that having been tried, convicted and sentenced the on same charges FHC/ABJ/CR/56/ 2007, by Justice M.B. Idris, it will amount to injustice if is subjected to a fresh trial on same charge.

Justice Ekwo in his ruling, granted leave to Kalu to seek an order prohibiting the Federal Republic of Nigeria, through the EFCC (her agent), her officers, servants, others, agents, privies and any other person or bodies driving authority from the Federal Republic of Nigeria, from retrying him on charge No. FHC/ABJ/CR/56/2007 between FRN vs Orji Kalu & 2 ors or any other charge based on the same facts de novo, there being no extant judgment and ruling of a competent Court in Nigeria mandating same.

An order prohibiting the Federal Republic of Nigeria, through the EFCC (her agent), her officers, servants, others, agents, privies and any other person or bodies driving authority from the Federal Republic of Nigeria, from retrying, harrassing and intimidating him with respect to the charge as concerns charge No: FHC/ABJ/CR/56/2007 between FRN vs Orji Kalu & 2 ors or any other charge based on same facts as he need not suffer double jeopardy.

The Court further ordered that the leave should operate as a stay of proceedings until the determination of the application.

Justice Ekwo in his ruling, also held that the applicant who is fully clothed with the locus standi has placed sufficient materials in his supporting affidavits to warrant the Court to exercise it’s discretion in his favour.

Leave is at the discretion of the Court under order 34(2) of the Federal High Court. In granting leave, there must be sufficient material fact placed before the Court by the applicant to enable it exercise it’s discretion judicially and judiciously.”

“The averrements in the affidavit in support of the motion are about the applicant who has demonstrated sufficient interest to cloth him with a locus standi to bring the action.”

“By section 34 (9) of the constitution, no person who shows that he has been tried by any Court of competent jurisdiction or tribunal for a criminal act and either convicted or acquitted shall again be tried for that offence having the same ingredients as that offence serve upon the order of a competent Court.”

Meanwhile, the Court gave Senator Kalu seven days to file and serve his process to the EFCC and adjourned the case to February 23 for mention.

In his supporting affidavit deposed in support of his motion, Senator Kalu chronicled the historical background of the trial from his first arrangement and re-arraignment in 2016 and 2017, before the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court after the initial charges were amended by the EFCC.

He further narrated how his application to quash the charges was not granted by both the trial Court, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

He told the Court that following an application by the EFCC, to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, the charge was transferred to the Lagos division of the Court and was assigned to Justice M.B. Idris (now a Justice of the Court of Appeal).

That upon the transfer of the charge to Lagos, he bore the cost of movement of his entire legal team from Abuja to Lagos including the cost of accommodation up till the judgment was entered.

Senator Kalu further submitted that at the trial, the prosecution called a total of 19 witnesses and thereafter, closed it’s case, necessitating him together with other defendants to enter individually and respectively a no case submission.

He said midway through the trial, Justice Idris was elevated to the Court of Appeal as a Justice of the Court and subsequently took the oath of office and subscribed to the oath of Allegiance on June 22, 2018 and lost his position as a Judge of the Federal High Court.

The applicant also narrated how by a Fiat dated July 2, 2018, issued under the hand of the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Idris was directed to return to the Federal High Court to conclude the trial, then part-heard in charge no: FHC/ABJ/CR/56/2007, between FRN vs Orji Kalu and 2 ors.

That in his judgment on December 5, 2019, Justice Idris convicted and sentenced him with respect to the extant charge.

That following his conviction and sentence, he was incarcerated at the Kuje Correctional Centre where he served part of his term having first spent a few days in the Ikoyi Correctional Centre.

That on May 8, 2020, the Supreme Court in judgment in appeal No: SC.62C/2019, Udeh Jones Udeogu vs FRN & 2 ors, held that the trial of the appellant at the trial Court was conducted without jurisdiction and thereby ordered the retrial of the appellant (Udeh Jones Udeogu) without reference to him.

He argued that there is no extant ruling or judgment of a competent Court in Nigeria ordering his trial having regard to the fact that the Supreme Court excluded him from the explicit order for retrial arising from charge No: FHC/ABJ/56/2007.

That the unassailable position of the law is that no person who shows that he has been tried by any Court of competent jurisdiction or tribunal for a criminal and either convicted or acquitted shall again be tried for that offence having the same ingredients as that offence serve upon the order of a competent court.

That his trial having been pronounced a nulity by the Supreme Court in it’s judgment of May 8, 2020 and without more cannot entitle the EFCC to institute the same charge against him.

After listening to Awa Kalu (SAN), Justice EKwo reserved ring till Monday, February 8, 2021.

While Prof. Awa Kalu (SAN) led the defence team of Senator Kalu, Chief Solomon Akuma (SAN) and K.C. Nwafor appeared for Udeh Jones Udeogu and Slok Nigeria Ltd respectively.

Meanwhile, the EFCC is seeking the transfer of the trial from Abuja to the Lagos Division of the Court.

When the case was called up, the prosecution counsel, Mr. Chile Okoroma informed the Judge of a letter by his client, seeking the transfer of the case to the Lagos Division of the Court.

He said that the request is predicated on previous decision of the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal which held that “no element of defense in the charge took place in Abuja”.

Okoroma accordingly prayed the Court to adjourn the matter indefinitely (sine dine) pending the decision of the Chief Judge.

Justice Ekwo however, refused to adjourn indefinitely and fixed June 7 for report on the decision of the Chief Judge.

Politics / Fani-koyade To Apologise To President Buhari Ready To Join APC by compass22: 8:42am On Feb 09, 2021
Fani-Koyade To Apologise To President Buhari Ready To Join APC.

Indications emerged on Monday that former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode could be softening the grounds preparatory for his return to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC),a Party he dumped six years ago for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Chief Fani-Kayode met with the Chairman, Caretaker/Extra-Ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) of the APC, Governor Mai Mala Buni and his Kogi State counterpart, Governor Yahaya Bello at a Guest House in Abuja.

The closed-door meeting, which lasted for nearly an hour, according to sources, may not be unconnected with resolving some grey areas for the anticipated return of Chief Fani-Kayode to the APC.

It was learnt that the former Minister had earlier met with Governor Bello in his Wuse Zone 6 residence in Abuja before the duo proceeded to Governor Buni’s Guest House.

Insider sources said Chief Fani-Kayode was prepared to apologise to President Muhammadu Buhari to be readmitted into the Party.

Known for his virtolic attacks on President Buhari and his administration, the former Minister had slammed the President for alluding in his speech during the nation’s 60th independence that those who had contributed to socio- economic problems of the country should appreciate the efforts his administration was making to reverse the situation.

The President had said in his anniversary speech that “those in the previous Governments from 1999 to 2015, who presided over the near destruction of the country, have now the impudence to attempt to criticize our efforts.”

The former Minister took to his Twitter handle to say that President Buhari had taken everything that former leaders gave Nigerians.

Fani-Kayode wrote: “It is sad that Buhari attacked Obasanjo, Yar’adua and Jonathan in his speech.

“This is a case of misplaced aggression, an expression of frustration and an acknowledgement of his own failings.”

“OBJ , UMYA & GEJ gave us back our dignity and self-respect. PMB came and took them back from us.”

It remains to be seen how the situation will pan out.
