Agriculture / Re: My Experience About Snail Farming, Pictures, Etc by Conry(m): 8:04am On Nov 23, 2018 |
obyback:My experience with handling them: N/B: They will never be totally eradicated as long as you feed your snails with fruits and leaves which decays after a day or two. Even the normal formulated feed will attract them after two days if not completely consumed by the snails. 1. Use either long broom or anything (clothes, nylon etc) that wont be hard on the snails to drive them away. Do it during the day or when you are about to feed them before they wake up in the evening, so that you avoid hitting them on their tentacles or fleshly bodies. 2. Pack out any decaying food remnant, and replace with new ones. 3. Change the soil if the soil and cage is too wet. 4. Some will recommend treat soil with neem extract(oil or liquid) in moderation (i have not tried this method because the first top 3 methods work for me.) |

keeenee: Bro, e-books, e-videos or e-manuals are also good. they have their purpose too. I used them, and i have started, and i am still yet to visit any snail farm yet. Forums are also good. like Nairaland here, the amount of good information here is staggering. you only need to be patience to read them from page to page, and connect with some of them good guys bro. Thanks. |
Agriculture / Re: How Do I Go About Starting A Snail Farm by Conry(m): 9:00am On Nov 19, 2018 |
McTIPSY: Started like 4 months running now. I started with Tyre. Started with 20 big snails (AM) i bought from a Bush Market woman. I used four(4) tires stacked on top of each other with the last one acting as weight on the mosquitoes net i placed as a covering. Then i bought another set of eighty snails(80) from IART moor plantation in Ibadan (My sister arranged for this and sent it through a transporter to Lagos.) These i placed on another set of 4 tires like the first one. I then went back again to the bush woman to buy more (about 40 or more medium ones.) These i added to the first set. so i have close to 80/80 on each tires. For the feeding, i was just going to the fruit sellers to pack their left overs (Paw paw and its peels, water melons and its peels. cocumbers, and pineapple, before one of the gurus here advice me against feeding them pineapples.) For cleaning, tyre system is hectic for maintaining hygeine. you need to keep cleaning daily before feeding (This is where and when your passion for snail rearing is fully tested.) Use the tyre system for a month or two and you can face anything that comes with the business. I later constructed a three layered hutch box(cage) and moved the snails to the cage, where they are till date. I have small space in my flat so i was looking for ideas on how to maximise the space. I can use tyre system all around the flat but that will be too cumbersome in the long run. Normal Cage will be fine, but it wont get me to my desired goal of 3600 snails in a year (300/month). So more research, more snooping in Nairaland, some more snooping in Instagram, google, youtube until i saw one implemented by one of the gurus here (NGSNAILS) and i bought his book on snail rearing (only cos of that housing system, though i thought i will get to find out how he constructed his. No. you only look, learn and improvise) I learnt some more things from his book and other stuffs i researched online. Bros you go research well, and you go start, and then the learning continue, and the asking of constant questions to your mentors and others. By the way, i built the Three storey(Layer) cage myself. No carpenters pls. Just me, and i am not a carpenter. Just an IT guy on a 7am-4pm job. i feed the snails in the evening only. I learnt a lot from the short time of less than half a year. that's why i said start small and built from there. Presently have about 220 adult snails, and about 120 small ones hatched from their eggs. am looking to order for more from one of the ogas here( cos my goal is 500 Breeders. remember i have just some small space where i live.) I no go fit finish the story of my experience here. e plenty. maybe another time or on more specific questions. By the way i just recently started giving them formulated feed just 2 days ago (using layers mash.) so i spent close to 4 months without formulated feed. Not that easy though. I have used both fresh and dry moringa leaves at some point. Also Milk leaves. Left over eba too. i use paw pawpaw leaves a lot. i avoid salt and pepper. i also noticed that the layers mash i bought contains a lot of salt. Might discontinue it and do my own formulation (the layer mash formula without the salt part. will just get the concentrates and mix them together myself.) Bro, e do me. Thanks. 2 Likes |

NGsnails: Master, pls what's the main reason snails eggs production is lowered during the dry season even though your cage is cool and moist, even wet most times? Are there anything we can do to make them keep producing at their usual rate during this period? Thanks 1 Like |

ahahnow: Start small first, and learn the rope first. Box or tire. 20-50 Breeders(point of lay, or already laying), AM. Buy from Bush market women, or buy directly from those who picked from the bush, or go to one of the gurus' farm here and buy. if you can't go, then order from them (they hardly sell below 100 if you are ordering.) Just make sure you start small; its not as easy as you hear or read from books or forum. 1 Like |

Conry: Below is one of my favourite quote from a movie: "To find out if a country is rich or poor look at the bins(waste bins). If there are bins and no rubbish, it's rich. if there's rubbish by the bins, it's neither rich nor poor, it's touristy. And if there's rubbish but no bins, then it's poor." Value is all about perception, but perception doesn't just come without a reason. And individually or as a group we are responsible for how we or other people perceived the value (money wise, or otherwise) of our environment. Rubbish everywhere and no bins provided by somebody or the community, downhill goes the value of our location. This is just a few aspect on how a location is perceived. Clean environment, good drainage system, good collective security (Community vigilante or Gated Estate security, individuals of good net worth, all will help to raise or even hype up the value of a location. when buying land or property in a new area, don't go to buy alone. Get your colleagues, your network of business partners, friends and family to join you. With time, the value will shoot up, which will attract more quality and great individuals, and the circle will keep repeating until eternity. |

Thanks Bros for the enlightenment. Pls is that bulbs(light source) in the snail pens in the picture above? Pls what is the purpose of that Sir? Wont the Dry(not wet) plantain leaves turn wet/moist after sometime? do we need to constantly change the wet or moist ones. Also, pls what is the implication of the snails eating the plantain leaves(moist or dry?) Is it normal for them to eat it? Thanking you for your anticipated reply. |

Business at whatever level is all about trust. Due to Nigerian factors, those buying dont seems to find honest people dealing or selling, and the honest sellers dont have enough buyers willing to trust them or what they are offering. It's a vicious circle with nobody willing to give in, and good investment goes to waste. Genuine land offering from honest and trusted party still available... Trust me, and check me out first. I have a more to lose if this go haywire: www.linkedin.com/in/conrad-mba; https://facebook.com/ConradMba It is good to drive more good people towards your area/location to invest. That is part of what makes for a highly valued environment in the long run. |

hafeez65: Well... depending on his location. Lagos might still be cheaper, economical or more profitable in the long run, if he lives within Lagos (maybe not too far from those areas he mentioned.) |

"People will trade their money for things that they find more valuable than the money they just spent." I recall how my Dad used to cut chunks of shares he has in companies and sell to make ends meet, when the end seems far(when we were in hard times). i also remembered the lands he sold after keeping it it for some years. You will always spend money. Why not spend it on things that do appreciate in value. Lands still available - Genuine land, no omonile wahala. |
