Culture / Re: Why Do Yoruba Muslims & Hausa-fulani Muslims Not Inter-marry? by curi00: 2:45pm On Jan 11, 2016

lol! welcome to Nigeria, though i blame your brothers for stealing our culture language and even name (they're not the only ones, nupes, kanuris and other northern nigerian minority ethnicities do that as well). i dont have any prejudice against them though. but its like you said, different ancestor, culture, language and even history. come to think of it, what do we have in common?

Changing culture and name happens all time unfortunately, it's not stealing it's integration. And I saw many Hausa claiming Fulani as well.
We have just in common religion and location like in many others Africans countries with different tribes. I dont know why some Nigerians act like these similiraties are special maybe because Nigeria is not a muslim country so they put the 2 muslims tribes together.
If we were acting like some Nigerians in Senegal, almost all tribes would become one, because most of tribes are muslims, they have lived and intermarried with each others for several centuries. So what are they the same because of that, never heard such a thing.

The Reason Why You Said Your Origin Is Senegalese/mauritanian Is Desame Reason Why Some People Said Are Hausa Fulanis. You Can Not Separate Them. They Are Living In Desame Location Many Years, intermarriages, religion, politics Are all desame.
When I say I am Senegalese/Mauritanian, I dont make it like it's the same country while some nigerians act like fulani and hausa are the same tribe. I'm part fulani, we dont have hausa in Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Mauritania, etc...
People can identify with both tribes of course because admixture can be very interesting but when it comes to talk about tribes specifically, they should be separated because they are not the same, they dont share the same ancestors, history, culture, language.
Fulani are in many countries and they intermarry with many tribes. Although they do have common points with others tribes just like they have with hausa about religion, location, etc...all of this does not make them one tribe, they are still different tribes.

Fulani girls used.to be so pretty but the moment they started mixing up with Hausa,(cos Hausa r ugly) they lost it.
I personally think there is beautiful and ugly girls in every tribe but let's be real Fulanis girls are known everywhere for being beautiful.
Full fulani still exists, not all of them are mixed with Hausa.

thats news... but i am sure you saw the "slash" /.
He is right, Fulani/Hausa as one group does not exist outside Nigeria. Although they do share some similiraties especially islam, they both have their own identity, culture, history, physical look, etc...Do you know Fulani are not just in Nigeria ? They are the first community in Guinea, the second in Senegal, etc...
I think people can identify with both tribes but when it comes to talk about tribes, they should seperated as they are not the same at all.

I am hausa - fulani. My dad is hausa and my mum is fulani.
That's still 2 identities not one.
Hausa-Fulani as one group doesn't exist.
It's like a mulatto saying I'm spanish-moroccan, that's two identities !

There was a huge research conducted long ago but don't seem present recently. In any case, the research was pretty conclusive. Limestone in the soil - think it was limestone, played a significant part. Research was conducted world-wide. You'll find, for instance, among the tribes of Papua new guinea, a higher incidence of lighter skinned tone people in limestone regions. Same apparently in Africa. In addition to this, the temperate and humid nature of forest regions give people a brownish complexion to begin with. People in Forested/ humid regions such as the baka pygmies of Cameroon and Igbos have lived in forested region for long periods.

Forget the white blood nonsense wink

Interesting and as we said with HugoChavez, their facial features is clearly negroid.

True. If one or both of your parents are light or at least light brown, then there's a good chance you're naturally lightskinned. I also look for facial features as well.

Yes facial features is very important !
We are on the same page wink

Yup. Staying in the sun a lot can darken you as well. And many Nigerians assume that just because your skin fluctuates, that you're an automatic bleacher.
Not only sun but food as well. Sometimes it's just natural.

For those assuming you're bleacher, they probably dont know your past or your parents, the best way to find out it's to check old pictures.

Just a little correction, hausas are found all over West to central Africa, not just Nigeria.

But you were spot on.

Thanks for that.
I didnt know that at all. Could you precise me were Hausa are in west/central Africa. I saw they are in Cameroon as well

Common sense would say that lightskinned blacks can get a bit darker if they work in the sun all day as farmers, blue collar workers or work in the market. I'm a prime example of that. I'm very very light naturally and I could pass for a latino, hence my username HugoChavezJr. But during my teenage years, I gained a bit of melanin working various blue collar jobs in my home town. Various Nigerians who have a brownish skintone got that tone as a result of increased exposure to the sun, but once they start to live a more comfortable life, their skin will naturally lighten up. Ever since I've been in Spain, my natural skintone has resurfaced. And as for Igbos developing leprosy, that's a bloody lie. I've seen many yellow and red Igbos who look healthy and normal, without any skin defects. MayorofLagos is just talking out of his a.ss.
Absolutely, my brother used to be lightbrown skinned till his 15 years, after that his skin became dark and now at the age of 26, his's natural skin color is getting back

Even though Igbos are known for lightskin, they still have prominent Negroid features. So no, they aren't mixed at all.
Agree with that. Skin's color is not an indication of admixture.

There is several reason you can get tan or light : climate, diet, health

That's what I'm surprise about, why always put Hausa/Fulani as it is one group

Hey,

I found your question kind of weird.
I dont understand why Hausa-Fulani is always put together.
Fulani have their own identity and they are in several African countries while Hausa is just in Nigeria.
I was born in France and still live there, my origins are senegalese/mauritanian (sorry for my bad english) and before surfing on web, I've never heard about Hausa.
From what I learnt, many Fulani and Hausa did intermarry with each others, both are muslims and live on northern Nigeria but there is nothing special about that because I can say the same thing for Serer-Fulani in Senegal, Fulani-Malinke in Guinea, etc...but they are not seen as one group.

Anytime you're asked, which tribe you are from, most of time you just say your father tribe even if your mother is from another tribe but I've seen many nigerians saying hausa-fulani as it is one group.

Here are my questions, do all Nigerians see Hausa-Fulani as one tribe ?
Are they aware this "new identity" is only limited to Nigeria because outside Fulani are completly their own group even if they did intermarry with others tribes ?

Thank you for your answers
