THE HUMAN EYE
Have you ever wondered what life will look like without your eyes, have you given time to think of the immense impact your eyes have on your overall wellbeing? True we know the eye is important but how important? Give this a try. Close your eyes for a couple of minutes and try to walk around… What did you experience? Well then, as a part of the body, it needs care.
About health defines The eye as an organ that detects light and sends signals along the optic nerve to the brain. In humans, the eye is a valuable sense organ that gives us the ability to see. It allows for light perception and vision, including the ability to differentiate between colors and depth.
Although small in size, the eye is a very complex organ. The eye is approximately 1 inch wide, 1 inch deep and 0.9 inches tall. The human eye has a 200-degree viewing angle and can see 10 million colors and shades.
Now that’s amazing isn’t it? … 10 Million colours and shades. I feel we should share on what it takes to care for this all important part of our bodies. Truth is it does not require much compared to what it offers. I promise, it would be worth your time.
EYE CARE
Eat for Good Vision
Protecting your eyes starts with the food on your plate. Really I think everything about the human body is traceable to our plates. My boss mentions this all the time – Let Thy Food Be Thy Medicine. And I add, YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT. Nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E might help ward off age-related vision problems such as macular degeneration and cataracts. Regularly eating these foods can help lead to good eye health:
Green, leafy vegetables, Fish, Eggs, Nuts, Beans, and other non-meat protein sources. Fruits like Oranges and other citrus fruits or juices are not an option in eye care.
Eating a well-balanced diet also helps you maintain a healthy weight, which makes you less likely to get obesity-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in adults.
Wear Sunglasses
This is not just about fashion and trends. It is about your EYES. The right kind of sunglasses will help protect your eyes from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. Too much UV exposure makes you more likely to get cataracts and macular degeneration. Choose sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays.

Use Safety Eyewear
For some people, this is not an option. Some professions and career path have work to do along the lines of chemicals, substances and machines that can harm the eye. Professionals in this paths should ensure the adherence to work safety rules. If you work with hazardous or airborne materials on the job or at home, wear safety glasses or protective goggles every time and I mean EVERY TIME.
Certain sports such as ice hockey, racquetball, and lacrosse can also lead to eye injury. Wear eye protection (such as helmets with protective face masks or sports goggles with polycarbonate lenses) to shield your eye
Look Away From the Computer Screen
Computers are essentially a part of our lives, no gainsaying. Staring at a computer screen for too long can cause:
• Eyestrain
• Blurry vision
• Trouble focusing at a distance
• Dry eyes
• Headaches
• Neck, back, and shoulder pain
These steps will help to keep our eyes from the negative effects constant use of the computer may have on it.
 Make sure your glasses or contact lens prescription is up-to-date and adequate for computer use.
 Some people may need glasses to help with contrast, glare, and eye strain when using a computer.
 Position your computer so that your eyes are level with the top of the monitor. This allows you to look slightly down at the screen.
 Try to avoid glare on your computer from windows and lights.
 Choose a comfortable, supportive chair. Position it so that your feet are flat on the floor.
 If your eyes are dry, blink more.
 Every 20 minutes, rest your eyes by looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds. At least every 2 hours, get up and take a 15-minute break. This might be a little difficult for some professionals 15 minutes off the work table? Anyway, it is not a hard and fast rule, just take A BREAK.
Lastly, nature has not left us without help. Several fruits, vegetables and herbs(as mentioned earlier) contains properties that help in eye care. Science has brought this together into easy to use forms. Your eye needs LUTEIN. This link leads to eye wellness. http://dabarpharmacy.com/133-eye-care[img][/img]

PRISTINEMUSCLES:
Nice one. We are so blessed with highly nutritous foods and i see no reason why more than half of the population should be obese.
Let me add to the list

white beans
sweet potatoes
plantains
bananas
wild rice (ofada rice)
Pawpaw
Walnuts(sperm-booster)
Tigernuts(sperm-booster).
They are just so many.
Start eating right from today.

Thanks for the insight.

Fish is a good source of protein and, unlike fatty meat products, it’s not high in saturated fat. Fish is also a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids benefit the heart of healthy people, and those at high risk of or who have cardiovascular disease (disease of the heart). Research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids decrease risk of arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats), which can lead to sudden death. Omega-3 fatty acids also decrease triglyceride levels and lowers blood pressure. It also contains essential vitamins like vitamin D and B2 in good amounts. More to these, Fish is rich in calcium (essential for bones and teeth health), phosphorus, iron (blood building), zinc, iodine, magnesium and potassium.
Fish and all it contains helps improve Skin and Hair health. One of the biggest drawbacks to a low-fat diet is you often deprive your skin and hair of the healthy fat it needs, leaving it dull and dry. The omega-3s in fish are exactly the type of healthy fat to eat to keep your skin looking nourished and your hair shiny. Research has also linked fish and omega-3 consumption to treatment of skin conditions such as psoriasis. It also helps to ease depression. Several studies have found that when taken along with prescription antidepressant medications, the omega-3s in fish are more effective at treating depression than just the prescription medication alone.
It is interesting to note also that fish boosts Brain Development. The EFA (Essential Fatty Acids) omega-3 found in fish are essential nutrients for children because they contribute to brain development. Some studies have even found that omega-3 consumption can help soothe symptoms of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) in children.
An unexpected twist to the discovery on fish is this. It builds stronger sperm. A recent study of 188 men found that those who ate more fresh fish — along with other healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains — had stronger swimmers than those who ate unhealthy diets. Although, researchers say that more study needs to be done, but preliminary data shows that the better the participant’s diet, the stronger the shape and mobility of the sperm he produced.
Well, eat fish, take fish oil supplements… YOUR HEALTH MATTERS.

Hello Out there. We shared on PLANTAINS very recently. Today, lets discuss COCOYAMS. Cocoyam has several other names from different parts of the world. These names includes but are not limited to the following: Taro, Dasheen corms, Ede, Eddo, e.t.c
I stumbled on some information about Cocoyam and I was amazed. First, cocoyam though a root is also classified as vegetable. Cocoyam is free from gluten. They carry high-quality phyto-nutrition profile comprising of dietary fiber, and antioxidants in addition to moderate proportions of minerals, and vitamins. Not bad for a tuber. It is one of the finest source dietary fibers; 100 g flesh provides 4.1 g or 11% of daily-requirement of dietary fiber. That’s Wow! It also contains good levels of some of the valuable B-complex group of vitamins such as pyridoxine (vitamin B-6), folates (folic acid), riboflavin, pantothenic acid, and thiamine. Little wonder it is considered as a vegetable. Further, cocoyam provides healthy amounts of some of important minerals like zinc, magnesium, copper, iron, and manganese. In addition, the root has very good amounts of potassium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that help regulate heart rate and blood pressure. Regular consumption of cocoyam is good for those who are trying to lose weight because of its low caloric and high fiber content.
Cocoyam is ideal food for cancer prevention, it has low fat and sodium content, this makes it an ideal food for preventing hardening of the arteries, which is usually caused by eating foods that are heavy in cholesterol. Because cocoyam has minimal amount of fat, you can eat several servings of cocoyam and not worry about adding unwanted pounds or other risks, which are associated with fatty foods such as heart or kidney diseases.
Cocoyam is one versatile food that could be turned into anything. It could be boiled and eaten as Yam, Cooked as soup (Ofe-ede)- That’s from the Ibo community in Nigeria, Cocoyam Chips, Roast delicacy (usually eaten with peppered smoked fish), Pudding. It is usually grated and cooked in its leaves alongside some irresistible ingredients, Pounded Cocoyam is also interesting. Well, mouth-watering. And the leaves, soup material.
Never look past COCOYAM AGAIN ITS GOT LOTS TO OFFER.

CARROTS!
Carrots are everywhere around us now. The orange short, stout and edible sweet sticks that we have on the hawker’s tray. As much as we have them around, we really take them for granted passing by and not paying attention to their presence. Please, read through, you will find amazing facts about carrots. You can’t beat this, Come with me…
Carrots have a huge amount of Vitamin A. For this, carrots are best known. This comes from beta-carotene, which is converted into vitamin A in your liver. Interestingly, there's a reason why 'carrot' and 'carotene' sound so alike. The word carotene was devised in the early 19th century by a German scientist after he crystallized the compound from carrot roots, you see, as far back as the 19th century. Carrots when eaten as part of an overall healthy diet, provide you with protection against heart disease and stroke while helping you to build strong bones and a healthy nervous system.
Eating more deep-orange-colored fruits and vegetables is associated with a lower risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). In recent studies, researchers have found that carrots are associated with a 32 percent lower risk of CHD.
Carrots also contain falcarinol, a natural toxin that protects carrots against fungal disease. It's thought that this compound may stimulate cancer-fighting mechanisms in the body. Now that’s interesting.
Also, Carrot extract has been found to be useful for the management of cognitive dysfunctions and may offer memory improvement and cholesterol-lowering benefits. The extract from carrots also has anti-inflammatory properties and provided anti-inflammatory benefits that were significant even when compared to anti-inflammatory drugs like Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen and Celebrex.
Armed with this information, I believe the carrot guy will not pass you unnoticed.
Enjoy CARROTS.

Garden egg is a seasonal fruit. It is comes in different shapes and colours which includes dark green, yellowish green, and pale yellow. Some species which are not directly edible in that they have to be cooked before consumption come in Purple. These are also called Aubergines or Egg plants depending on the part of the world. Among the Ibo tribe in Nigeria, it is usually eaten alongside specially made and spiced groundnut paste. In other parts of Nigeria, it is eaten solely as snack, alongside groundnuts. It is also cooked and made into stew- a classic accompaniment of cooked yam.

Garden Eggs, Aubergines or Eggplants (Different names for different parts of the world) have several health benefits they include:
Weight Reduction
One major health benefit of garden egg is that it helps to burnt fat and tends to reduce weight and keep the body fit at all time when taken. This is attributed to the fact that Garden eggs are rich in fibre and fills the stomach when eaten. This prevents food cravings between meals and in essence, helps the body burn stored up fat.
This is a good news for our fat and overweight people out there.
Improves memory
Findings from animal studies suggest that nasunin, an anthocyanin within eggplant skin, is a powerful antioxidant that protects brain cells from free radical damage. Research has also shown that anthocyanins inhibit neuroinflammation and facilitate blood flow to the brain. This helps prevent age-related mental disorders and also improves memory.
As earier stated, Garden Eggs are an excellent source of dietary fiber. They also have good amounts of potassium, manganese, copper and thiamin (vitamin B1). It is also a good source of vitamin B6, folate, magnesium and niacin. Thiamin (vitamin B1) is required for normal growth and proper functioning of the heart and nervous system while Niacin (Vitamin B6) is needed for cellular respiration.
Blood Sugar and Cholesterol Management
Garden Eggs/Aubergines as established are high in fiber and low in fat and therefore recommended for those managing diabetes or managing weight concerns. Research shows that one major health benefit of garden egg is that it helps to lower blood cholesterol and lower high-ocular pressure (glaucoma). To lower cholesterol however, one must pay attention to the cooking method and other ingredients which may contain bad fats. Garden Eggs are also high in bioflavonoids, which are known to control high blood pressure and relieve stress.
Prevents anaemia in women
Menstruating women, who lose iron every month in their menstrual flow, are unlikely to be at risk, when consuming garden egg with high level of Iron, but in postmenopausal women and men, iron, which is not easily excreted, can accumulate.
What do you say? I say Yay! Go garden egg go...[img][/img]

Every SPORTS person should know about this...
ROYAL JELLY
Royal jelly is a milky-white secretion produced by glands of worker honeybees to induce the superior growth and development of the queen bee. Royal jelly is the principal food of the honeybee queen. Man has discovered its numerous benefits to the human race.
What is it used for?
Because of their specialized nutrition, queen bees differ from workers in several ways. The queens are approximately twice the size, they lay approximately 2,000 eggs a day (female worker bees are infertile), and they live 5 to 8 years (approximately 40 times longer than worker bees). Studies have shown that ingestion of this product will do as much for humans as it does for bees; that is, increase size, improve fertility, and enhance longevity.
In Europe and Asia, royal jelly has been used in traditional medicine for longevity. Royal jelly has been sold as a skin tonic and hair growth stimulant.
General uses It is also used to boost energy, strength and vitality. It builds mental balance, relieives stress and boosts memory. It works perfectly as an anti disease; a natural immune booster that keeps flu away. It stimulates hair growth and aids the growth of nails and bones.
Indeed, IT IS ROYAL JELLY…

Sports / You Should See This! by dabarpharmacy: 4:34pm On Nov 05, 2014
Athletes often look for alternative nutrition to perform at their best. And Supplements are just it
What is a Supplement?
A supplement is something added to the diet, typically to make up for a nutritional deficiency. Ideally, it should be used as a substitute for eating well. Supplements ideal for sporting individuals include the following:

Common Sports Supplements Used by Athletes

B-Vitamins
Vitamins are essential for the body to function properly. There is a link between the B-vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, vitamin B-6, B-12 and folate) and performance in high-level athletes.

Protein Supplements
Protein is a necessary nutrient that everyone needs to function properly. Both athletes and sedentary individuals need to get adequate protein.

L-Glutamine
What it does: prevents catabolism
Glutamine is the most commonly occurring amino acid in the human body. It is responsible for transporting nitrogen into your muscles. Glutamine also plays a large role in metabolism, the functioning of your immune system, protein synthesis and energy restoration. During heavy workouts your body’s glutamine levels can become depleted, sometimes taking a week to get back to a normal level. Supplementing glutamine allows you to work out rigorously without running the risk of depleting your natural stores.

Vitamin C
What It does: boosts immune function
Vitamin C is probably the most widely used single vitamin. It's known as an antioxidant, and is often recommended as a remedy for the common cold. There is even research to suggest that it may have cancer preventing properties due to its ability to aid the body in fighting off malicious cells.
Who Should Take it?
The RDA for Vitamin C intake is 40mg per day – although, as with many health guidelines, the numbers suggested only really take into account the amount necessary to avoid health problems relating to a vitamin deficiency. In the fitness industry we’re far more focused on optimising health. I take vitamin C year round to avoid minor colds and flus, and if I do feel something creeping up on me I’ll take a high dose of 2000-3000mg, which I find often turns the tide in my favour and allows me to avoid getting sick. In my opinion, anyone with a strenuous and active lifestyle should consider supplementing Vitamin C as a general boost to the immune system.

Glucosamine
What it does: supports joints
Glucosamine is formed naturally in the body as a combination of glucose and the aforementioned amino acid Glutamine. It repairs cartilage and other tissue. While we form glucosamine naturally, production in our bodies slows as we age.

Multi Vitamins and Multi Minerals
What it does: Overall Health
By the time our food has been harvested, refined, packaged, transported and left on supermarket shelves, a lot of its original nutrients are lost. Eating the highest quality food can offset this challenge considerably, but it's expensive and not always practical. As a work around, I recommend that everyone takes a multi vitamin and multi mineral supplement each day to keep their body enriched with essential nutrients.
Who should take it?
Everyone, especially those engaged in heavy physical activity or who are unable to fully control their diet or quality of food sources. Many health problems – both minor and major – can be traced back to a vitamin or mineral deficiency.
If I could take just one supplement on this list, this would be it.

I am sure you are a sports person and would certainly need some supplements to help your body keep in shape even when you exert it while sporting.

WE DON’T DIE, WE KILL OURSELVES …
Are you serious? I have known people who died and did not kill themselves. They either died of a chronic disease, auto crash or some sort of misfortune.
Dear reader, I get your view. Rightly said. It is true some deaths are unavoidable but right there, you struck the point – Chronic Diseases. Nigeria in 2005, recorded 2,014,000 deaths. Of these deaths, chronic diseases account for 24%, which translates to 483,360. WHO – World Health Organisation projects that in the next ten years, over 5 million people e will die from a chronic disease. Did you get that? A quantum leap from 478,000 deaths to 5 million deaths. An increase of 90.3%
What is A Chronic Disease?
A disease that persists for a long time. A chronic disease is one lasting 3 months or more, by the definition of the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics. Chronic diseases generally cannot be prevented by vaccines or cured by medication, nor do they just disappear.
Causes of Chronic Diseases?
Majorly, Chronic diseases are results of Poor lifestyle choices, such as smoking, overuse of alcohol, poor diet, lack of physical activity and inadequate relief of chronic stress. The afore mentioned are key contributors in the development and progression of preventable chronic diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and several types of cancer.
Now, do you see what I mean? Frankly, Chronic diseases are preventable, and a life of wellness achievable.
What is wellness?
According to the American Heritage Medical Dictionary, Wellness is “The condition of good physical, mental and emotional health, especially when maintained by an appropriate diet, exercise, and other lifestyle modifications”.
Mosby’s Medical Dictionary defines wellness as ‘’A dynamic state of health in which an individual progresses toward a higher level of functioning, achieving an optimum balance between internal and external environments’’.
Farlex Partner Medical Dictionary says wellness is ‘’A philosophy of life and personal hygiene that views health as not merely the absence of illness but the full realization of one's physical and mental potential, as achieved through positive attitudes, fitness training, a diet low in fat and high in fiber, and the avoidance of unhealthful practices (smoking, drug and alcohol abuse, overeating)’’

WE DON’T DIE, WE KILL OURSELVES (2)
Welcome aboard. We started a journey from the last edition, in case you are just coming on, we are on our way to wellness. We defined our destination and here, a quick recap, Wellness is “A dynamic state of health in which an individual progresses toward a higher level of functioning, achieving an optimum balance between internal and external environments’’.
Why Wellness?
Wellness because there is NOTHING GOOD about illnesses and diseases. Managing them comes with a huge price. It affects the pocket of its victims, their overall (Physical, Social, Mental, and Emotional) health, and family member’s well-being. The brunt is borne mostly by the sick, his care giver, family members and in the long run, the society as existing profitable economic activities are put on hold, new business ideas buried and limited resources that should have been multiplied are channelled towards providing relief for the sick.
Anti-wellness habits includes poor diet, lack of physical activity, inadequate relief of chronic stress, smoking, and overuse of alcohol. These habits continued over time break down the body’s immune system thus making the body susceptible to various kinds of illnesses.
Every human body has an immune system. Wikipedia in its definition says The immune system is a system of biological structures and processes within an organism that protects against disease.
It will not be out of place if I liken the Immune System to a Closed-circuit Television (CCTV) in a shopping mall with heavy traffic of people and stock. The CCTV is meant to monitor what happens in the mall, who and what comes in and goes out. Now, what happens if the CCTV gets bad? Anything goes in and comes out without check even PILFERERS. Meaning that when the immune system breaks down, diseases has FREE ENTRY AND EXIT permit.
IMMUNE SYSTEM
From our brief definition, the Immune System is a Structure. A structure can be built or torn down. The truth is that no structure left on its own without attention gets better. If it is not being improved on, it breaks down and gets destroyed. So, it is either of two things- (1). Keep working on the system to make it stronger OR (2). Abandon it to itself and it gets weaker.
Just as a physical structure (building) needs the right standard and quantity of sand, cement, water, iron bars, stones, gravel, etc. to stand and pass for a strong structure, so does the human body,- Your body needs a mix of several nutrients from food to function at its peak.
From elementary science, almost all of us learnt about the food chart, classes of food and BALANCED DIET. We are familiar with Carbohydrates, Protein, Vitamins, Minerals, Fats and Oil, and Water. Our Immune System is built by what we EAT and DRINK; OUR DIET.
IS YOUR DIET COMPLETE?
From the basic knowledge of elementary science, Can you judge your diet to be complete and in THE RIGHT PROPORTIONS? Now, be true to yourself. Is it? Right now, I know you are doing a serious heart search. You see, in our days, the food stuff we have are processed. The bran in our rice and wheat are gone, the juices lack the fibre of the fruits, our beans is baked and canned, the fish broiled, oiled and canned, the maize de-hulled and the husks fed to backyard goats!, Everything Is Processed!!!
The truth is that in the process of processing these foods, they are killed. Now, can you answer my question?
See you next time…
