EMERGENCY DIGEST - Dino Melaye claimed on Wednesday that operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) were heading to his hometown in Aiyetoro, Kogi State, to plant arms in his house.

Melaye, who is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senatorial candidate in Saturday’s rerun election in Kogi State, raised the alarm on his Twitter handle, after news emerged that SARS officials were leaving Lokoja for Aiyetoro.

Nairaland / General / Emergency Digest - Hon. Aa Ndakene Laments Flood Menace In Kwara, Writes Nema by dailynigerian01: 6:39pm On Nov 10, 2019
Hon. AA Ndakene laments flood menace in Kwara, writes NEMA

The House of Representative member representing Edu/Moro/Patigi Federal Constituency, Honorable  has expressed concern over the menace of ravaging flood in some parts of his constituency.

This was made known in a statement made available to Emergency Digest by his media aide, Mr. Abubakar Saddiq.

It was gathered that Hon. Ndakene has since written to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), informing them about the situation and requesting, as a matter of urgency, for relief materials and medication for those affected.

Furthermore, he urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts on the completion of the ongoing dredging of River Niger, which he noted, will help avert future occurence of flood.

"The flood had submerged large expanse of arable land, leaving many houses waterlogged. The unfortunate incident has rendered not only many farmers and other persons engaged in agro-allied activities jobless and homeless, but also exposed to diseases and malnutrition" he stated.

The Honourable Member further lamented that schools in the affected areas have been shut down, while most of the motorable roads have been terribly damaged by erosion and in other cases heavily waterlogged, leaving bridges unpliable and some villages inaccessible.

Crime / Release Newsdigest's Editor, Gidado Shuaib, Webmaster Now - NYCN Warns Police by dailynigerian01: 4:10pm On Oct 30, 2019
Investigative Report: Release NewsDigest Editor, Webmaster now - NYCN warns Police

The National Youth Council of Nigeria has demanded the immediate release of the NewsDigest Editor, Gidado Yushau Shuaib and one Adebowale Adekoya.

Bello Bala Shagari, President of the Council made this known in a statement made available to Emergency Digest.

Mr Shagari who lamented the manner in which Gidado Yushau Shuaib and his webmaster were arrested by the personnel of the Nigerian Police Force.

He said “The manner in which the young journalist was reported to have been apprehended in a sting operation is unprofessional and unnecessary.”

“Mr Gidado is a reputable journalist who respects the rule of law and therefore an invitation would have been enough if it was necessary to investigate him on anything” Mr Shagari added.

Speaking on the reason for the arrest, Mr Shagari said “the journalist who was allegedly arrested because of exposing criminality especially on drugs, a problem which the the Government of President Muhammadu Buhari prioritize. Mr Gidado Yushau deserves accolades for helping the fight against drug abuse no matter who may be involved.”

“We therefore demand the immediate release of Mr Gidado Shuaib and other staffs of News Digest before the Nigerian Youth & Students resort into mass action against Kwara State Police Command” Mr Shagari said.

Emergency Digest reports that NewsDigest Editor, Gidado Yushau and Adebowale Adekoya were arrested in a gestapo-like style for publishing an investigative news story titled, “Inside Kwara factory where Indian hemp smoking is legalized”. The factory is allegedly owned by the former deputy Governor of CBN, Sarah Alade.
Crime / Police Whisk Newsdigest’s Editor To Ilorin Over Report On Ex-cbn Chief by dailynigerian01: 11:53am On Oct 30, 2019
Police arrest, whisk NewsDigest’s Editor, Webmaster to Ilorin over report on Ex-CBN Chief’s Firm

EMERGENCY DIGEST - Five days after some Police officers in Lagos State arrested Mr. Adebowale Adekoya, a professional webmaster for NewsDigest, an Abuja-based online medium; the newspaper Editor, Mr. Gidado Yushau, has also been arrested by detectives of Kwara State Police Command.

The NewsDigest’s Editor and webmaster were arrested in a gestapo-like style for publishing an investigative news story titled, “Inside Kwara factory where Indian hemp smoking is ‘legalized”.

PRNigeria gathered that Gidado who is also the Editor of the YouthsDigest was arrested on Tuesday night and first taken to Wuye District Police Station, after the plain-clothed Police officers stormed his residence in Abuja.

The factory, Hillcrest Agro-Alied Industry in Ilorin, is said to be owned by a former acting governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mrs Sarah Alade.

The report, which was published on 19 May 2018, was authored by Mr. Alfred Olufemi, an award-winning campus journalist from one of the premier universities in the country.

In the report, it was stated that Hillcrest Agro-Alied Industry tolerated the smoking of cigarettes as well as Indian hemp by workers saddled with the responsibility of loading and off-loading processed and unprocessed grains in trucks without being sanctioned

It was also reported that the firm refused to respond to author’s inquiry on the disturbing situation, after he had put several calls and text messages to the industry’s hot line.

Four detectives, early Wednesday (today) morning, left the Wuye Police Station with Gidado and Adekoya in a blue vehicle, en route Ilorin for further interrogation and with the intention of arresting Alfred.

In a telephone chat with PRNigeria, lawyer to the arrested NewsDigest’s staff, Barrister Yunus Abdulsalam, said it defies logic that something that happened last year May will be resuscitated now, a year and a half after the report was published by the newspaper.

The lawyer, who explained that Gidado is a well-known young media entrepreneur, picketed the police for storming the residences of the young journalist and his webmaster, in a manner that is reminiscent of a sting operation.

On what the ‘illegal’ arrest portends for the future of campus journalism, Bar. Abdulsalam, said: “This is a sad commentary, and an ugly chapter in the life of campus journalism in Nigeria. This kind of illegality is not a good omen for campus journalism. It is also a traumatic and horrifying experience for NewsDigest and YouthsDigest, as a credible online media platform to promote activities of budding writers and young journalists.

“Both NewsDigest and YouthsDigest are two notable media organisations that have created competitiveness among campus journalists. And as a matter of fact, the author of the investigative report, and other young writing talents who often contribute stories for the two mediums are reporters with untainted integrity.

“Thus, they are being engaged with by other credible and frontline media houses such as Premium Times, The Nation, ICIR, Blueprint and the Cable among others to serve as their campus correspondent and reporters. Had it been they are known for writing fictitious or libelous stories, would they have been engaged by the mainstream media establishments?

The lawyer insisted that the alleged ‘defamatory’ offence is one that permits both the NewsDigest’s Editor and webmaster to be granted bail, as such the police should do the needful without further ado.

“The alleged offence is not even one that necessitates arresting them. In fact, what the police did by arresting them can be compared to using a sledgehammer to kill an ant,” he said.

Nairaland / General / Prof Abdalla And The Soaring Image Of NOUN, By Gidado Yushau Shuaib by dailynigerian01: 4:07pm On Oct 28, 2019
Prof Abdalla and the Soaring Image of NOUN, By Gidado Yushau Shuaib

If the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) lasts until the end of time, and there is every likelihood it will, the name 'Prof. Abdalla Uba Adamu' will never go into extinction. It will face no compromise. Professor Adamu, the Vice-Chancellor of NOUN has paddled the university out of the doldrums to its present admirable position as a reputable citadel of learning. One won't be wrong to call him 'the changer of fate.'

Established in 1983 as a springboard for open and distance learning in Nigeria, the institution had to be suspended a year after. However, its resuscitation began on 12 April 2000. Ever since the institution had been witnessing one stride after another in the hands. Notably, the administration of Prof. Abdalla which started in 2016 has been eventful especially as the institution is seen to be witnessing a what may aptly be described as the transformation to a 'giant' institution.

Starting from the swift relocation of its headquarters from Lagos to Abuja, the country's 'administrative capital’, up till the point of making the institution to have a blossoming student population unrivalled in Africa, all of which were made possible by Prof. Adamu’s leadership ‘notoriety’. In ensuring a smooth relocation, Professor Adamu had to quickly fix the infrastructural gaps in the permanent site which was then under construction.

Concerned about qualitative education relevant to the modern world, Adamu introduced professional courses with 'attractive' modules including degree programmes in International Relations, French and Development Studies. He also introduced Master of Law (LL.M), Master of International Law and Diplomacy (MILD), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Law, M.Sc Public Health, Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) Economics, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Mass Communication, Master of Science (M.Sc) Cyber Security. Others include a Master of Science (M.Sc) Artificial Intelligence, Master of Science (M.Sc) Management Information System, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Cyber Security, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Artificial Intelligence, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Management Information System as well as its over 22,000 facilitators spread across the country.

Before Prof Adamu assumed office, the university was facing a hard time over the accreditation of some of its courses by the National University Commission (NUC). With his Midas Touch, the school's Law programme is being fine-tuned for accreditation so as its students would soon be able to enrol in the Nigerian Law School. This, before Prof Adamu's coming, was deemed arguably impossible.

Also, under his leadership, in 2018, President Muhammadu Buhari assented the amended NOUN Act. With this recognition, the university is placed at par with all recognised universities in Nigeria under the various Acts that amended the provision of higher education in Nigerian universities. The act opens a vista of opportunities for students of the institution that they did not have before.

Going back to the institution's infrastructural achievements under Prof Adamu, one can beat his chest that it never had it better. And it is not solely at the headquarters that the infrastructural transformation has taken place, it is across its 78 study centres. At the headquarters, there is a 3-storey faculty building billed to house the remaining faculties in Lagos. Other structures built by the professor include: a magnificent library, a brand-new printing press, a convocation ground and a media centre.

The institution also unveiled its newly redesigned Olusegun Obasanjo Centre for African Studies, OOCAS, the centre was opened to collaborate with local and international scholars willing to dissect Africa, towards the goal of producing cutting-edge research that would showcase the African story.

Apart from academics, the professor has a strong passion for sports. This is apparently why he is seeing to the building of a recreation centre at the university's headquarters. In the centre are two courts for basketball, one for volleyball and another one for football. These facilities are being routinely used by both staff and students; hence the institution stole the show at the recent NUSSA Games at the University of Ilorin and smiled home with the highest number of medals. NOUN had more athletes in the competition than any other university.

Daily, both global and local players in the sector of education troop into the university for all sorts of collaborations. Many a university in Nigeria and beyond are now using NOUN's template because of its efficacy. Little wonder, the Society for Peace, Conflict and Practice and Canada-based Commonwealth of Learning conferred their fellowship this workaholic Professor.

These aren't all the achievements of Prof Adamu at NOUN. These are only a few, yet they loudly position him as a man with the Midas Touch.
