Literature / Young Nigerian Dominates Again In Literature by DanielOladoja(m): 11:31pm On Oct 11, 2013
The Golden Baobab Prizes for African Children’s literature, set up to celebrate and inspire the creation of enthralling African children’s stories, have announced the 2013 prize long list with seven Nigerians nominated in different categories.

More inspiring is the fact that the youngest person on this list is Nigeria’s born Fego Martins Ahia (Ogenefego Ahia) who is not only the youngest on the long list, but also the only Nigerian in his category (The Golden Baobab prize for rising writers)

Fego was born in1995, in Lagos. He comes from a humble background of disciplined parents whose encouragement has helped him develop a passion for excellence.

Fego is also a first year student at Tufts University in Massachusetts, USA. He grew up surrounded by his father’s small library which ignited his imagination. He attributed this to why he started writing at a very early age.

The Golden Baobab Prize for Rising Writers, which is for talented young writers below the age of 18, longlisted Fego for his story titled “The little secret,” which is a story about Kamila, a little girl from East Kenema who is curious about her father’s friend, Pa Camara, and goes to many lengths to figure out his little secret.

Reacting to his nomination, Fego exclaims excitedly, “I feel deeply honored and humbled to have made the longlist of this year’s Golden Baobab Prizes. This is indeed a big dream come true as it was such an illuminating experience writing a children’s story that spoke to my roots in gentle whispers. Thank God for Golden Baobab.”

Apart from his recent achievement of being longlisted for the Golden Baobab Prizes, this passion saw to it that Fego was shortlisted twice for the Litro/IGGY International Short Story Award, receiving a bronze essay award from the Royal Commonwealth Society as well as winning the inaugural Ugreen Foundation Short Story Prize.

Other Nigerians on the longlist are:

Ayibu Makolo (the author’s pseudonym) – Madam’s Maid and the Little Yellow Frog

Ayibu is a medical doctor who presently lives in Scotland with her family. She has been writing since she was a child but only began to make her work public this year. She enjoys reading classics and travelling around the world.

Philip Begho – The Princess with a Golden Voice and the Two-Headed Monster

Philip is an award-winning author who has published over a hundred books. He has worked as a journalist, a lawyer, a banker and a university lecturer, and has also engaged in film and theatrical productions. Philip now writes children’s stories fulltime.

Uchenna Edith -Susan – Christmas in Kemah’s Home Town

Uchenna is a freelance writer whose greatest passion is to inspire and empower the African mind through her writing. She is currently working on several chapters of books for children, as well as contributing articles to her favorite websites and blogs.

Nneoma Ike-Njoku – Elelenma

Nneoma’s decision to study Lieral Arts and Sciences at St John’s College in Santa Fe is the extension of a childhood desire to “know everything” that never disappeared.

Besides writing, Nneoma enjoys drawing, sculpting and attempting to cook. She loves food and travelling; she enjoys how a new place makes a person breathe somewhat differently.

‘Tunji Ajibade - In the End

‘Tunji is a Communications (Writing/Editing) Consultant, Literary Administrator and newspaper columnist. He lives in Abuja, Nigeria. ‘Tunji has published short stories, dramas and children stories – many of which have either won, or have been nominated for awards.

Olorunfunmi Temitope – Grandma’s Hens

Olorunfunmi is a graduate of Fine Arts from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He is the Lagos Liaison Officer of Life in My City Arts Festival. He writes poetry, short-stories and is presently working on his debut novel.

The Golden Baobab Prizes for literature has since its establishment in July 2008 inspired the creation of riveting African children’s stories by gifted African writers. The Prizes invite entries of unpublished stories written by African citizens irrespective of age, race, or country of origin. The Prizes are organized by Golden Baobab, a Ghana-based pan African social enterprise dedicated to supporting African writers and illustrators to create winning African children’s books.

The organization’s Advisory Board includes renowned authors Ama Ata Aidoo, Patrice Nganang, Jay Heale and Maya Ajmera.

Golden Baobab is supported by Echoing Green, Reach for Change, the Global Fund for Children and The African Library Project.

Politics / Absolutely Ridiculous: National Assembly Plans Prayer To Avert Plane Crashes, Te by DanielOladoja(m): 11:24pm On Oct 11, 2013
The National Assembly will this month hold a prayer session to seek God’s intervention to end terror attacks and to avert more plane crashes in the country.

Chairman, Publicity Committee of the National Prayer Breakfast of the National Assembly, Senator Ita Enang, stated this at news conference in Abuja yesterday.

Enang noted that against the backdrop of a myriad of problems confronting the country as an entity, the national assembly is set to seek the face of God for spiritual solutions to the problems.

Enang, who is also Chairman, Senate Committee on Business and Rules, said the prayer session would focus especially on the unending security challenges ravaging the Northeastern part of the country over the last three years and other problems facing the country.

The National Prayer Breakfast is an annual event organised by the National Assembly to bring together Nigerians of all faiths, tribe and creed to seek the face of Almighty God for divine solutions to the myriad of problems confronting the nation.

He noted that the National Prayer Breakfast, with the theme: “God in the lives of national leaders for development,” would feature Pastor John Enelamoh, who would give the key note address to “help in pulling down all walls and vices blocking the growth of the nation in the right direction.”

He said: “The 2013 National Prayer Breakfast, seeks to build bridges of unity, national harmony and progress.

“Through the instrument of our faith, we prayerfully pull down all walls and vices that divide us as a nation and provoke the spirit of patriotism and love among Nigerians necessary to propel Nigeria to her rightful place in the comity of nations.”

He added that the prayer conference, which would have in attendance President Goodluck Jonathan, the leadership, management and members of the National Assembly with their counterpart in the judiciary as well as members of the diplomatic corps, would be spiritual avenue for God to guide the leaders of the nation right.

He said: “We hope that as every well-meaning Nigerian join us at the prayer conference, the prayer to God of all creation, to direct our noble cause, guide our leaders aright, help our youths to know the truth and build a nation where peace and justice reign, shall definitely be answered.” visit http://9jatalkshop..com/ for more stories.
Politics / Is The Senate Dead Or Alive by DanielOladoja(m): 9:36pm On Oct 11, 2013
Two days ago the lingering strike action that has brought our Universities to a close, wind up to 109 days. The number 109 reminded me of the National Assembly, I began to wonder where they have been in the whole scenario, is the Legislature still in existence, how come they have done nothing to salvage the situation after three months? Is it that the news had not reached their palatial building? The last time we heard from them was when they were contesting to begin to marry off our little sisters at a ridiculous age. Our legislators do nothing but boast themselves in ghost constituency projects, white elephant project defy the amount they have always claimed was allocated.

While the Universities lay waste Nigerian Senators from the biggest of them to smallest have been silent, dead silent that it makes me wonder if someone had perhaps struck them into a deep sleep. Not even one of those men and women had made a move to raise a motion for quick intervention in the situation. Has the legislature forgotten it roles, gone are those days of threats of impeachment on the ground of incompetence, these ones are toothless dogs that cannot bite, like a snake that swallowed a lizard they seem to be in hibernation trying to digest something bigger than their stomach. Perhaps they will speak up that one is well digested. They are the highest paid in the world and the most ridiculous, a complete disgrace to the dignity of democracy, it’s apparent they probably don’t even understand the term. Our law makers have turned money makers, they can riot and revolt on issues of budgetary allocation and allowances but they choose to go to bed on the subject of education. Perhaps the house committee on education in a state of comma, unfortunately our resident Doctors are also on strike.

Needs the Executive sink lower before the Legislature engage its maze of power, when are we going to have a dynamic house of assembly that truly represent the interest of it people without political bias or party parley? Can we have Noble men like Benjamin Franklin and William Wilberforce stand in the assembly of our nation to blaze the trail for future generations and speak until slavery even the slavery of the mind and wreckage of the soul is ended? Let the gullible electorate read this piece with a thought-full mind, will give your vote to a fool in 2015? These men are not representing anyone but themselves and when their terms ends all hands should be on deck to see that the last of them is sent out, yes we can. Let the competent men and women arise, things must change, our Legislature needs a resurrection! visit http://9jatalkshop..com/ for more articles and stories from me
Phones / MTN: Yello Fever by DanielOladoja(m): 10:34pm On Oct 10, 2013
The telecoms company is said to be the biggest in Nigeria having a larger customer base than the other service producers. MTN will always be remembered for telling us per seconds billing was impossible, then globacom came and blew that all away. Kudos to those guys for spear heading the revolution in the telecoms sector. MTN no doubt has been a key player in the economy of our nation, we must also commend it for all the philanthropic endeavors and donations to help promote and improve the lot of many, they call it “giving back to the society” and it was recorded that MTN Nigeria has given more N7 Billion in grants and donations, that’s great and fabulous isn’t it?

Over ten years of business has made MTN a household name in Naija, it was said that the company realized it target goal in less than a year of operation in Naija to tell you how a fertile ground Naija is for those who want to do business here. You need to see old women in the country brimming with joy as they commune with their wards located far away from home, the nightmare for me comes when I meet them on Buses on when I have to shuttle with them in taxis, the noise is almost deafening. I wish I could tell them “Ma you don’t have to scream just talk” but I’ve never had enough guts to dare it. All these capture the beauty and the beatitudes of science and communication technology, but that is so far so good.

The thing that eats at the fabrics of my heart is the silent stream of incompetence that flows beneath the surface of this great edifice we have all come to know, I know someone might ask, why do you have to complain when you can always switch and hop from one network to another. But I daresay one of the tragedies of options especially in our Nation is that denied us the joy of excellence. When public schools failed we switch, when NEPA failed we went to generators. For how long are we going to hop around, when are we going to stand as a people and demand for excellence for every Kobo we spend? After ten years of operation basic things like recharging and checking your account balance is still a snag on the acclaimed best network in Africa. I was completely bewildered when I was told by the customer service agent after a week that they still didn’t have any trace of a particular transaction I made on their system, how come? Imagine such debauchery and incompetence. After ten years the network could still be busy and your call sometimes will not be completed. What ails us, I ask, is it that nothing work without friction in Nigeria or that we have just become so wrapped and caked in the mud of mediocrity and poor performance? Could it be that MTN by the reason of its color is plagued by yellow fever (if such a thing does exist)?

As we clocked 53 we as a people demand for excellence, enough of mediocrity. The best gift MTN can give to Nigerians is excellence. We demand excellence in service and delivery. First things first and if you cannot perform please pack up or make room for others to come on board. Someone said those who succeed do so despite their excuses, MTN has given us enough excuses and now we are tired of them. We need more innovation and creativity in our telecoms industry, as long as other Nigeria continues to pay more for less than other African nations and even those in developed world are getting we are not there yet. I am Nigerian and I demand excellence, I speak for change and if you too big to change, just wait time will sort you out. Today, it is MTN; it could be anyone else tomorrow. God bless Nigeria. Entertainment / Afrocandy: The Audacity Of Evil by DanielOladoja(m): 10:23pm On Oct 10, 2013
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing: darkness is nothing but the absence of light.

When a big evil has incapacitated a giant smaller evils begin to trample on him. In the heat of the independence anniversary, an article featuring the comments of porn actress afrocandy about governance and Nigeria was published. She was going tell us how things should be done in our nation. That story actually reminded of the story of a lunatic standing by the way side and as people were passing he jeered at them saying “see them, see them, mad people”. How funny that the lunatic oblivious of his own pathetic and pitiable state takes on the people that are better than him, the one who has lost his mind stands to convict the innocent of his own crime. So what should we do? Should we hold our peace and say nothing, the scripture tells us to answer a fool according to his foolishness.

Who is she? She calls herself Afrocandy, her name is Judith Opara Mazagwu born in1971, she describes herself as an actress and singer currently based in the US or God knows where, they call her a soft porn actress but could there be anything soft in violence? Soft porn is like saying pleasant death or sweat tragedy if such exist; of course we know there are no such things anywhere. She started out with commercials like Coca Cola, Nixoderm, Liberia G.S.M etc. before her dangerous instincts lead her into pornography. Recently she is becoming more audacious and a frequent subject of public discuss, the latest being her open letter of invitation to one of the house members of BBA a vicious and violent unrealistic show that I will not want to talk about today.

Nigeria indeed has problems a lot of them no doubt; the solution however cannot emerge from a woman who has gone beyond the end of reason. The soul that has conceived one wickedness can nurse no good thereafter; hence we do not need the solutions of a villain like Judith. She is evil absolutely, and her audacity is a slap on the face of us all. If Judith has any good in her, it probably died a long time ago with her conscience. Her sheer audacity and brazenness bothers me, could these be because most of those who could confront the nymphomaniac are slaves her vices or perhaps they are troubled by their guilty conscience, no wonder she said most of those that criticize her are hypocrites, hmm, no wonder!

Sarah J. Mass said “sometimes, the wicked will tell us things just to confuse us- to haunt our thoughts long after we’ve faced them” is that what Judith is up to? It is evil when the sun rises in the west and sets in the east, it is doom’s day when a monster is handed the badge of captaincy in a flock of sheep. Perverts like her have no place in the leadership, after all he who cannot govern he own passions or spirit is like a city without walls. NO to Afrocandy, away with her! Joyce Carol said “this is the forbidden truth, the unspeakable taboo- that evil is not always repellant but frequently attractive; that it has the power to make of us simply not victims, as nature and accident do but active accomplices”. In the light of this truth I say let Judith-afrocandy close her mouth and seal it shut, we need no counsel from the likes of her. visit http://9jatalkshop..com/ for more and leave your comment
