Politics / Ife Traditional Council Set To Declare Demise Of Ooni Of Ife by Danyhel(m): 9:51pm On Aug 04, 2015 |
Ife Traditional Council set to declare demise of
Ooni of Ife (thedifferencenews.com)
Olanrewaju Oyedeji,Ile-Ife
Indications are that the Ife traditional council is
presently set to formally declare the death of the Ooni
of Ife after severally denying that the revered
monarch had gone on to join his ancestors.
investigations have revealed that a crucial meeting
held on Wednesday by the traditional council is not
unconnected with the rumuored death of the Ooni and
how to manage the fact that the news already broke
into the public domain before the council had put its
acts together. Equally in discussion was the issue of
how to carry out neccessary procedural rites before
the death of Ooni can be announced.
Checks on the palace by The Difference in Ife
revealed a state of unusual calm as workers in the
palace maintained very tight lips as to the situation of
the Ooni. When our correspondent paid a visit to the
palace he was told that the chiefs and top members of
the traditional council were not available to respond
to queries. When he proceeded to ask for an
explanation on the somber m mood in the palace, no
one was ready to comment.
Feelers however were that though the traditional
council had sent out town-criers to tell Ife residents
that the Ooni is hale and hearty, it was gathered that
the traditional council members were very annoyed
that the death of the Ooni went viral without their
consent and that the announcement of Ooni’s death
failed to follow their normal procedure. The
traditional council it was exclusively learnt will
however put all of these behind it soon and go on to
announce the demise of the monarch soon in the hope
that this move will bring to a close, all of the drama
surrounding the monarch’s demise.
It however remains to be seen how Ife residents and
indeed the whole of Nigeria will receive the formal
announcement of the Ooni’s death after repeated
denials by the Ife traditional council.
The race for who becomes the next Ooni has also
silently begun with eligible princes already
commencing quiet preparations for the frenzied
succession battle that is expected to ensue
immediately after the official declaration of the
Ooni’s death by the traditional council. |
Culture / Ife Residents Stockpile Foodstuffs As Anxiety Rises Over Oro Festival by Danyhel(m): 8:45pm On Aug 02, 2015 |
Ooni; Ife residents stockpile foodstuffs as anxiety rises over Oro festival
— OAU Post UTME candidates in dilemma
Olanrewaju Oyedeji, Ile-Ife
Source: thedifferencenews.com The mood of the Ife residents at the moment is that of fear and apprehension following the declaration of an Oro festival in honour of the Ooni of Ife. In respect of its customs and traditions, the traditional council has declared a 7-day Oro festival. During the seven days, people especially females, will be prohibited from walking on the streets from 7PM in the evening, and according to tradition, anyone who violates this law will be at high risk. The development has however led to anxiety as Ife residents have started stocking their houses with food items and other things with which they will survive indoors for the period in which the festival will last. A trader who simply identified herself as Adunni, said her sales have been on the increase since the alleged death of the Ooni especially after the public declaration of the commencement of the seven day festival. On his part, another Ife resident, Samuel Opeyemi, who is himself a graduate of the Obafemi Awolowo University expressed the fear that the seven day festival will result in hardship for residents. He voiced his reservations to other areas of discomfort for residents, especially as their movements will be restricted for seven whole days. A state of calm was however still notable as at the time of filing this report as residents continued to go about their normal activities even as several people could be seen in groups discussing the latest declaration of the Oro festival. Meanwhile, prospective students of Obafemi Awolowo University are not finding the declaration of Oro festival funny at this time against the backdrop of their post-UTME tests which is scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2015. In separate interviews, some of the post-UTME candidates said it may be unsafe to embark on a trip to Ife at this time with the drama currently playing itself out within the ancient city. Isaac Yinka, a post-UTME candidate however expressed the hope that the post-UTME will be peaceful and that the date will not be extended. He however requested the authorities to be more sensitive to the particular details of their situation: “If there will be restricted movements, we the post-UTME students may find things difficult especially considering the fact that we are new to the city,” he pleaded. |
