Muyiscoi, well you started it, Here goes my experience. My brother came to me a few days ago and told me about this netbook his friend has and he has forgotten the password on it. It's a netbook and had windows vista on it. My brother told me if i knew anything about how to reset the password cos a guy had told him to bring 5,000 to help fix it and there was no guarantee that the documents in it would not have been lost. So i just calmly told him to bring it and let me see if Ubuntu may be able to help. He gave me this utter disbelieving look as if i had just said, "Obama is Nigeria's President". Well, i insisted that he brought it first and gently told him i was not sure abt the process but i felt it could be done, and he asked again, ", but what abt the documents, ", to which i replied again, ", bring it first and let's see, ". well the next day he did bring it and straight up, i plugged in my Ubuntu Live USB and voila he saw all the documents. So he said, "so you can do it abi?" and i replied, "I'm not sure yet, if i can only get my any of my internet modems to work then i cld download a file and install a program which wld give me access to the stored password and i can then reset it from there, hopefully''. well to keep the long story short, my internet didn't exactly work fine that night so i took the netbook to the office the next day and after a few minutes i had reset the password. (Well, the procedure is for another day). I got home and gave him the netbook with the windows on it and the documents intact. So excitedly he's like, "pls help me fix the thingy so that i can just connect my phone with it and browse the way you do on your system"(ubuntu) and i replied, "that is not possible cos you will need a pc suite on windows and he gives me that 'long thing' look". So he says, "can i use that your usb and i will be able to browse?" and i said "yes but i cant give u my usb", , In a world without walls, who needs windows, |

4llerbuntu: well, i cant really call this a how-to. Once u start xchat you see this box where you choose the server you wish to connect to. Note that here, you can set three different nicks. (i advise that you register your nick so that it is yours permanently) Copy and paste this in the text box in Xchat 1. /nick <newname> (this is to set ur new nickname) 2. /msg nickserv register <password> (this is to set ur nick with a password so its yours permanently) 3. /msg nickserv identify <password> (this is to recognize you as the true owner of the nick every time you log in) Click connect and it logs you into the server and bring a channel box for you to choose a room. If you dont know the room , you may do a search. If you know the room you can just type it in, for example, #nglug or #ubuntu. If the server changes your nick after registering, you can change it back with /nick <name> and you can identify with /msg nickserv identify <password> See you soon in #nglug.

abes: keep going bro, in the final analysis, its what works that works. i am using the xcomms izap and i find it quicker thru wvdial cos it takes like 'forever' to switch by usb-modeswitch. lynxnoon: Bro, please don't get me wrong. I am not in anyway suggesting that newbies should not do thier own reseearch in any way. I am only of the opinion that each newbie, and even us, still have a long way to go in totally harnessing the possibilities Ubuntu presents. I just feel that once a newbie has come up with a question then that may suggest that they feel that 'we' have the know-how and most times, i am very confident that some of us really do have the knowledge but still we refer them to google. I really think for us ere, referring pple to Google should be a last resort and not the first option. i do agree sometimes that the person asking the question might not know what to search for as a result of limited knowledge but we were all once there (at least i know i was). - muyiscoi. Helping them once doesn't mean we have helped them for a lifetime as we know that they may be the very people helping us 2moro based on their own line of research. If my memory serves me right i think i can still recall reading 4llerbuntu being the one giving his 'mentors' new workarounds on this thread at some point. That is the crux of my discussion. We can only help in instances and not on the whole. Till 2moro, i am still googling abt the possibility of setting up ubuntu to control my home appliances muyiscoi, i saw your multiple-deleted-threads. i feel u. @jidobaba, you are the new kid on the block. muyiscoi: Thank you. i think the whole essence of our trials and errors will only make sense when the next generation of users don't have to go thru them. As you have rightly pointed out, we could go the extra length by bookmarking anything that you have tested and really worked in Ubuntu. It is right that wht a newbie wants from Ubuntu may be entirely different from what we have thot of, at least we can save them thru the rough times of configuring stuff and preferences till they can venture out on thier own. Throwing someone to google may be a blessing and a curse at the same time. I'm sure no one wants to crash his/her system cos of a workaround he/she got from google all in the name of trying a new operating system. We, as experienced users may not find anything out of place with installing and re-installing (btw, one day in the not-too-recent-past, i reinstall ed Ubuntu on my system 6 times and in all the instances after a fulll system's setup i.e downloading codecs and applications.) Now that is not something you want a newbie to go thru cos its discouraging and its not in the spirit of Ubuntu. Ubuntu is arguably the most widely accepted linux distribution simply beacause of the community support it enjoys. When anybody has a problem, any nearby experienced user is ready to go out of his way to help. I have enjoyed such support (pple i dont know from Adam) at different times of the day and that has really blown my mind, On each occasion they patiently took me tru the steps until i got a breakthru and if i got stuck at a point they would gradually help me back to the starting point so we can try something else. I remeber one such helper once, after abt 3 hours with me online trying to help with an issue with alsa-sound that i had on intrepid, in his words, ", im sorry but i am not sure abt wht could be wrong at this point, you may visit #alsa if anyone there has used alsa successfully with your type of hardware, ". Tho i was disappointed cos of my issue, i was humbled by his approach and even further help tho he cldn't help anymore. That, is how we can help entrench this philosophy and operating system in Nigeria. Please guys, let us try in our different ways and at different times to help with a human face. For instance, i have copies of all the editions, on usb, for anyone who is interestedin a small demonstration cos i have advantage of a pretty good connection. I have been keeping bookmarks of any link that i have sucessfully used in the past. This is so that i can make sure the process really works b4 recommending it. Where i cannot bookmark, i have copied and saved relevant workarounds (tho without screenshots) using gedit, including various scripts that can be copied and pasted anywhere for anyone to use. I remember that this thread even started with full explanatinos and even meetings that were set-up to help solve pple's issues. Im sure some of us ere benefitted from such. Thank you muyiscoi, for bringing back fond memories. "In Ubuntu, you hold a world full of windows" |

muyiscoi: bro, big ups. Well the IRC #nglug may yet fit the profile. @all, pardon me, but i really believe that Ubuntu thrives on the community support. i do not think it is entirely fair to keep referring anyone that needs help to google. If you've been through it, the philosophy behind Ubuntu is essentially to make certain that each of us represents 'help'. Desmond Tutu: A person with Ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed. Nelson Mandela: A traveler through a country would stop at a village and he didn't have to ask for food or for water. Once he stops, the people give him food, entertain him. That is one aspect of Ubuntu but it will have various aspects. Ubuntu does not mean that people should not enrich themselves. The question therefore is: Are you going to do so in order to enable the community around you to be able to improve? 'We' are the help, each of us must have gained a lot from the world of possibilities that this software has exposed us to and we must continually seek ways to lead others away from the pitfalls we encountered. That, is when we (truly) have Ubuntu. 'Help' may not necessarily mean posting screenshots and put it in the best English possible, it may mean referring to the most appropriate link, website, blog, channel or person for 'immediate' assistance. Remember, Mandela did not say the villagers will direct the traveller to the nearest market to get food. Please, the only way we can encourage a lot of people to embrace Ubuntu is measured to a large extent by the magnanimity of its current users. I believe this is still our message - "in a world without walls, who needs windows" Be Human!!! |

jidobaba: Pls i think u shld consider the ubuntu desktop edition. i have an acer netbook too and i have tried the ubuntu and kubuntu netbook and desktop editions and i am of the strong opinion that the desktop is your preferrd choice. The reason being that the netbook does not give you access to your desktop basically and graphically that is a main let down, especially for a new user. Having said that, i must also mention that the desktop edition is optimized for the netbook too so you will have no problem using it. Since you have almost completed downloading the netbook edition,i cant tell u to start downloading the desktop edition. however i can offer you a free copy on a usb drive of the desktop edition if you are interested. About installing the software, i think u shld 1. create a separate home partition manually but this is not as difficult as it sounds (this will protect your data frm crashes and re-installations) 2. try an installation script that would install all the basic codecs and applications you may find useful. 3. have a friend you can always reach (sometimes just as a sounding board and other times cos your system may depend on it) Well having said all these, i'd like to help you so u dont go thru some of the hassles a lot of newbies went thru, including me, Ubuntu doesn't have to be a pain in the neck so i intend to help make it as easy as possible. It's ok to read the complete thread but i advise against it cos at a point, u may lose the main gist. Just keep asking questions and frequent users will respond, and if they don't, buzz me at damilaredavids@yahoo.com. Don't send an email pls. Welcome to the world of Ubuntu. I hope this is a grand experience for you. Let me know how i can help. I work around Onikan. |

4llerbuntu: I humbly beg to disagree, i dont think there is a 'best' p2p app yet depending or certain parameters. I have tried all the p2p apps you mentioned and i quite agree with the comments up until VUZE. My favorite is Frostwire - it's based on the famous limewire (which is proprietary). The main advantage which it has in my opinion over the others is the fact that you can do your MULTIPLE search in it for any type of file which a lot of the others mentioned can't even attempt. that means when using it, i dont have to open my browser. qBittorrent is close but quite heavy. In other words, vuze may be brilliant, frostwire is a genius. |

@ all, i was posting a reply to 4llerbuntu a few minutes ago and i realized that he may not even read it until the end of the day. I was just thinkin if it wouldn't be a lot better if ubuntu users and enthusiasts in Nigeria had a internet relay chat room (IRC) where people can come in real time and get solutions, answers to queries, network, or just sharing interesting discoveries. Some of our research could be enhanced if 2 or more pple are working on it at the same time. It would also give immigrants into the the world of ubuntu some comfort knowing that help is not 24 hours away but instant and sometimes even physical. Just thinking guys, |

bigbrovar:bigbrovar, im sorry but ur analysis of the Gnome 3 is a bit distant from the true positions: it does not replace nautilus totally but adds more functionality to it it works with existsing hardware so compiz is very much compatible with it you are not stuck with metacity + clutter it makes working on gnome more productive You may check the Myth vs Fact here: http://live.gnome.org/GNOME3Myths BTW, i have tried both gnome and kde and i cannot deny the allure of kde. it is just breath-taking. Gnome, on the other hand looks like an antique compared to it. but because i stuck wth gnome cos i FELT there are mo workarounds on it than on kde. i found out that i was mistaken cos i found solutions for kde too. A Anyways, i believd tht gnome could actually be tweaked to be as cool as kde so i set to work. Currently, i have the gnome 2 and i have the similar glassified effects tht u have on ur system, i also have an animated desktop(and can also use my favorite music videos), i also currently have all my multimedia conversion - audio, video, pictures to any format u can think of being managed by nautilus(all i have to do is right click). im sorry i cant post my animated desktop but i wld post the process as i soon as possible. Well, to be honest i cant compare kde and gnome in terms of beauty but i just would like to add tht there is a world of possibilities with gnome. From where i stand, gnome gives me the freedom and capacity to realize any thing i cld ever think of on a computer. once i think abt it, its just a matter of time b4 i set it up 'myself'. @lynxnoon, its a matter of choice really,

@all, guys, sorry for the mix up. I DO not have problem with connecting the ZTE i bought from Starcomms, infact, i posted the workaround for someone in my earlier post who seemed to be having problems setting it up. Here is my curiosity: I opened the case of the ZTE modem and found a SIM slot which was empty so apparently my ISP (Starcomms) was not using it. I've heard and read about modems being unlocked to accept 'other' SIM cards apart from the Provider's. Hence, i have been toying with the idea of my ZTE performing similar magic. My research so far has revealed much though: 1. That Huawei has been the preferred modem by a lot of subscribers all over the world 2. there are so many unlocking platforms for almost all the Huawei models of modem 3. that there are unlocking softwares for certain ZTE modems of wihc the AC2766 is not among 4. That the ZTE is going to take over the market from the Huawei modems because of 'cost', i think In summary, i was thinking if anyone had come across any useful tool. In essence, modding the ZTE would mean u can have your default ISP subscription (Starcomms) and still be able to insert a preferred SIM card into the modem and be presented with an option of connecting to another ISP. |

Anyways, good to see u are good to go. @4llerbuntu, get the proprietary version if u dont have it and follow the procedure to set permissions from my earlier post. 1. Click system>admin>users and groups 2. Click manage groups and put your password 3. scroll down to vboxusers, click it and click on properties 4. check the box that has your name beside it and any other user you may wish to grant permissions. 5. close the box with the box checked and start virtualbox @ all, i just thot i shld share something wt u guys. lynxnoon: Hi bro, i see ur screenshot. the best way to know tht you are not using the virtualbox ose (open source edition) is to quickly look it up in synaptic and make sure it is unchecked though how u installed it wld have told u as much as the one with usb support can only be obtained from their official webiste. Be tht as it may, from ur screenshot, it appears u have the one wt usb support. i think u may have to create a universal filter that will accommodate any usb u insert into the machine. close the guest host and click settings. scroll down to usb and add one or two filters. personally, i added one universal one and plugged all the usb devices i had and added them all. but the universal one shld suffice tho. then start the guest OS and ur usb shld show now. BTW, have u installed the guest additions, lets know how it goes, have fun, Be Human!!! |

@ sentil, Hi, i just purchased the same Starcomms IZap ZTEEMT AC2677 yesterday and had some problems using it on Lucid (Ubuntu 10.04). Lucid recognised it only as a mass storage device and will not switch it to modem automatically. I also tried adding it to the network manager to no avail. Well, after a good night's rest, i can tell u authoritatively that i am using it on Lucid as i type. Here is the setup process: I assume that the icon shows on your desktop when u plug the device. This setup is to try and get the modem to change modes so u can use it. The simplest route is to go to synaptic and download and install usb-modeswitch and usb-modeswitch-data. Although i have to say that may be difficult but it's the only way because you need those two things badly. Once that is done, restart your system with the modem plugged and allow it for about a minute after bootup. this is to allow the network to see the device through the usb-modeswitch. Do no be alarmed if u dont see the IZap icon anymore, it's for the best. After a few minutes and the network manager does not automatically connect the modem, right-click on network manager and go to edit connections. Go to Mobile Broadband and click on Add. U will not see Starcomms in the Provider box so just check manual/other provider below and finish the setup. Then go into the new setup up u have edit the username and password (this is the most important part). Your username is the Phone number printed on the box of the modem. it has 11 digits and u would have to put @starcomms.com at the end. look at the screenshots. your password is also the Phone number but without the suffix. Remember to check 'Connect automatically' and 'available to all users'. then apply. Just relax and wait for it to show in the network manager, if it doesn't show immediately, restart. That is it. Let me know how it goes. if it doesnt work, we wld try the wvdial option, my yahoo id is damilaredavids in case u need mo help. Cheers. Ubuntu rocks - Be Human!!!
