Technology Market / Re: How To Fix External Hard Drive Not Showing Up On Mac by davidsmithjd: 10:04am On Jun 15, 2023
Hey there! Sounds like you're wrestling with a pesky external hard drive that's pulling a Houdini on your Mac. Been there, done that. I've got some tricks up my sleeve that might just coax that shy little device out of hiding.

1. Jiggle The Handle: Make sure that bad boy is plugged in right and tight. You might even try different USB ports or cables, because sometimes the problem isn't your drive, it's where you're sticking it.

2. Play The Field: Give your drive a little tour of other computers. See if it shows up there. If not, might be that the drive itself has decided to take a permanent vacation.

3. Peek Under The Hood: If you're a Mac user and you've never had to tinker with Finder Preferences, count yourself lucky. Now's the time though. Head over to Finder > Preferences > General and make sure "External disks" is checked. Then, swing by the Sidebar tab and tick off External Disks under Locations.

4. Disk Utility To The Rescue: This is Mac's handy-dandy built-in tool to spot and sort out drive problems. Hit Command + Space, type in Disk Utility, and press Enter to boot it up. If your drive is in the sidebar but greyed out, it means your Mac sees it, but can't read it. You might need to reformat (spoiler alert: this wipes your data) or repair it.

5. Control-Alt-Delete Mac Style: Okay, Mac doesn't exactly have a CAD, but resetting NVRAM/PRAM and SMC could give your Mac a nudge to recognize the drive. For NVRAM/PRAM, hold down Option, Command, P, and R when starting your Mac, releasing after about 20 seconds of restart noises. For SMC, it's a bit different. On Macs without removable batteries, shut down, then hold Shift-Control-Option on the left of the keyboard and press power. Do this awkward claw-hold for 10 seconds, then let go.

6. Update Your OS: Because sometimes, a simple update can solve all your woes.

7. Get Your Hands Dirty with Terminal: If you're feeling adventurous, Terminal can help you check if your Mac recognizes the disk. Run 'diskutil list' to show all connected drives. But handle Terminal with care, it's like playing with fire – easy to get burned.

If none of this helps, your drive might be toast. Or it might just need a separate power source. Or it might just be a Monday. Good luck!

Computers / How To Recover Data From A RAW SD Card by davidsmithjd: 3:28pm On Apr 30, 2023
SD cards are these nifty little storage thingies that we usually find in digital cameras, smartphones, and other gizmos. But every now and then, they go all RAW on us, which means they stop playing nice with devices or computers, and suddenly you can't get to your data. Bummer, right? Well, in this post, I'm gonna dive into why SD cards turn RAW and, more importantly, how to save your precious files from the clutches of a RAW SD card.

Causes of SD Cards Becoming RAW

So, your SD card turned RAW and you're freaking out? Don't worry, we got you. First, let's talk about why SD cards go rogue like this. There are a bunch of reasons, like getting hit with a virus, corrupting the file system, yanking the card out at the wrong time, or just plain old physical damage.

● Corrupt file system: Your SD card's file system can get messed up from stuff like not ejecting it properly, virus attacks, power outages, or even bad sectors on the card.

● Physical damage: These tiny, portable bad boys can easily get wrecked by careless handling, dunking them in water, extreme temps, or dropping them.

● Wonky formatting: Messing up the formatting process can turn your SD card RAW.

● Incompatible file system: Using an SD card on a device or OS that doesn't jive with it can make the file system go RAW.

● Virus or malware: Nasty little bugs can infect your SD card and make it go RAW.

● Memory card reader probs: Sometimes it's the memory card reader's fault. Broken hardware or drivers can make your card go RAW.

How to Recover a RAW SD Card

Here's a list of things you will need to recover data from a RAW SD card:

● A computer or laptop with an SD card reader (duh)

● Data recovery software (think DiskGenius, Recuva, or Disk Drill)

● Internet access (to download and install the software)

● A USB cable or card reader (if your comp or laptop doesn't have an SD card reader)

● Enough storage space (to save the recovered data)

● Patience (cause data recovery can take a while, especially if there are a ton of files)

Keep in mind, though, your chances of getting your data back depend on how messed up your SD card is. If it's physically damaged or the data's been overwritten, you might be out of luck.

I have chosen two software options that can help a user recover data from a RAW SD card.

Option A: Disk Drill

We all know the frustration of losing valuable data due to an SD card turning RAW. When this happens, it can be challenging to access or recover your files. Fortunately, Disk Drill, a reliable SD card data recovery software, comes to the rescue. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the process of recovering your lost data from a RAW SD card using Disk Drill, ensuring you get back your precious files with minimal hassle.

So, let's dive in and explore the step-by-step instructions for a successful recovery.

● Download Disk Drill: Visit the official website of Disk Drill and download the software. Although Disk Drill is a commercial application, the price is reasonable for its features and capabilities.

● Install and run Disk Drill: Install Disk Drill like any other application on your computer. Once installed, launch the program and grant it the necessary authorization when prompted to access your storage devices.

● Connect the RAW SD card: Insert your RAW SD card into a card reader or connect a device containing the SD card to your computer.

● Select the SD card: Open Disk Drill, and you'll see a list of available drives in the Device/Disk list. Locate your RAW SD card or card reader and select it.

● Initiate the scanning process: Click the "Search for lost data" button at the bottom right of the window. Disk Drill will begin scanning your RAW SD card for any recoverable data.

● Review the found items: As Disk Drill scans your SD card, it will display the recoverable files. Click "Review found items" on the top right to check the files before the scan is complete.

● Choose the files to recover: Place a checkmark next to the files you want to recover from your RAW SD card.

● Start the recovery process: Click the "Recover" button at the bottom left. A prompt will appear, allowing you to choose a destination folder for the recovered data. Select a location, and then click "OK" to initiate the recovery process.

● Check the recovered data: Once Disk Drill finishes recovering your files, you can choose to "Show recovered data in Explorer" to view the results using File Explorer.

By following these steps, you can efficiently recover data from a RAW SD card using Disk Drill. After recovering your files, don't forget to fix the RAW SD card, so you can use it again in the future.

Option B: DiskGenius

In this tutorial, I will guide you through the process of recovering data from a RAW SD card using DiskGenius. This powerful data recovery software is specifically designed to work with various storage devices, including RAW SD cards, making it an excellent alternative to Disk Drill.

Follow these step-by-step instructions to restore files and photos from your damaged or RAW SD card using DiskGenius:

● Download and install DiskGenius: Visit the official website of DiskGenius and download the Professional Edition for your Windows computer. After the installation is complete, launch the application by double-clicking its icon. If you haven't purchased a license for DiskGenius Professional Edition, you can start with the trial edition to verify whether your files can be recovered before deciding to buy.

● Connect the RAW SD card: Insert your RAW SD card into a card reader or connect a device containing the SD card to your computer.

● Locate the SD card: Open DiskGenius, and you'll see a list of available drives in the left pane. Browse through them to find your RAW SD card, right-click it, and select "Recover Lost Files." Alternatively, you can click the "File Recovery" shortcut button from the toolbar.

● Initiate the scanning process: In the "Recover Files" dialog box, click the "Start" button, and DiskGenius will begin a deep scan of your RAW SD card. The scan should complete quickly, especially if your SD card doesn't have a large capacity.

● Preview the recoverable files: Once the scanning process is complete, DiskGenius will display a list of recoverable files. You can check if your desired files have been found by double-clicking each file to preview its content and ensure it's not corrupted.

● Select files to recover: Choose the files you want to recover from your RAW SD card by placing a checkmark next to them.

● Save the recovered files: Click the "Save Files" button and choose a secure location on a different disk, such as your computer's internal hard drive, to store the recovered files. Note that you cannot save the recovered files to the same SD card from which you are retrieving data, as the recovery process is read-only for the original device.

By following these steps, you can efficiently recover data from a RAW SD card using DiskGenius, ensuring you retrieve your precious files without any hassle.

Verdict

Getting your data back from a RAW SD card might seem like a total nightmare, but with the right tools and tricks up your sleeve, you can totally pull it off. Pro tip: Stop using the SD card the moment you realize it's gone RAW, or you might risk more damage and data loss. Just follow the steps we've laid out in this post, and you'll be on your way to recovering your precious files and avoiding future heartache.

After you have recovered your files, it is crucial to fix the RAW SD card so you can use it again in the future. This process involves formatting the card, which will erase any remaining data on it. To format the card, follow these steps:

● Connect the SD card to your computer using a card reader.

● Open File Explorer, locate the RAW SD card and note the drive letter assigned to it.

● Press the Windows key + X and select "Disk Management" from the context menu.

● In Disk Management, find the RAW SD card by its drive letter and right-click on it.

● Select "Format..." from the context menu.

● In the Format window, choose a compatible file system (usually FAT32 for smaller cards or exFAT for larger cards), and click "OK."

● Wait for the formatting process to complete, and then safely eject the SD card from your computer.

By following these steps, you can fix the RAW SD card, allowing you to use it again with your devices. Remember to handle your SD card carefully and take necessary precautions, such as safely ejecting it from devices and protecting it from malware, to prevent it from becoming RAW in the future.
Romance / What's The Best Way To Give A Girl Flowers? by davidsmithjd: 1:08pm On Sep 03, 2019
Fresh and beautiful flowers can serve as a meaningful gift for almost any occasion and for any person. When you give flowers, it is important to select a variety that sends a specific message or play for the feelings of the person who receives them. Once your flowers are collected and safely packed, send them through the delivery service or give them to the recipient personally so they know what you think about them throughout life's UPS and downs.

The best ways to give flowers to a girl:

- Take into consideration people's interests and preferences - Personalize your gift by sitting down and making a list of a person's interests and likes. Try to write down as many specific things or experiences as possible that the person has told you she likes.
- Think about whether a person is an introvert, an extrovert, or an ambivert. This will help you decide which experience is best for them. Consider age.
- Take into consideration the relationships - If you have a close relationship with a person, whether close or Platonic, you can choose a gift that will be more personal. If you are not close to this person, you can choose a more useful or affordable gift. A best friend can appreciate the symbol of your friendship.
- Select the flowers that transmit a specific message. Red roses, for example, are a universal symbol of love and adoration. Similarly, geraniums and daffodils serve as a symbol of honor and friendship. Purple hyacinths and yellow carnations, on the other hand, can be used to comfort or promote empathy for difficult loss.
- Choose seasonal varieties for timely gifts. Flowers like poinsettia and orchids are closely related to Christmas holidays. In addition, warm weather patterns with bright, vibrant colors such as sunflowers, daisies, and peonies can perfectly capture the spirit of summer. You can find a variety of seasonal flowers on sale all year round at the florist or anywhere that sells fresh flowers.
- Write down a personalized card. Write a short handwritten message and place it in a miniature envelope. Insert the envelope into the plastic cone into which the flowers are wrapped, or attach it to the edge of the vase if you choose to use a more formal container. This is an optional step, but it can make a nice touch, especially if you are close with the person you are giving flowers to. Use your card to express your feelings towards the recipient or to explain why you chose the flowers you made. Many flower shops will have a customized message when buying a bouquet.
- Hand the flowers to the recipient personally. This is the most personal way to give flowers.
- Leave the flowers where you know they will be found. If the flowers are for those you live with, put them on the dining table or kitchen counter so they can find them on their return home.
- Use Flowers delivery service. Run a quick Internet search to track the business that delivers to your region.

Conclusion

Flowers consider being the most popular gift in the world. This is not only because the Flowers are gracefully beautiful, and their aroma is exciting, but also because they carry with them the freshness of nature and the outside world. For those, who wonder how to send flowers to US or any other foreign country - there are plenty of online services...
Religion / What Makes The Shofar Important In Judaism? by davidsmithjd: 11:22am On Apr 07, 2019
The shofar is one of the most characteristic musical instruments in the Jewish culture. The word shofar means 'hollow'. A shofar is typically made from a ram’s horn and is sounded to celebrate the Jewish High Holidays. A person who hears the direct sound of a shofar is considered to have fulfilled mitzvah (commandments and precepts from God).
Though the most common origin is a ram’s horn, shofars come in all sizes, shapes, and materials. They vary in construction in different regions as well. For example, a Yemenite Shofar is different from an Ashkenazi or Sephardic shofar.

When is a Shofar sounded?

A shofar is sounded in synagogues during Rosh Hashanah and at the end of Yom Kippur. It is additionally blown at the start of every weekday in the month of Elul until Rosh Hashanah.
In the Jewish Torah, Rosh Hashanah is defined as 'the day of the shofar sounding' and it is customary to blow the shofar on both days of Rosh Hashanah during the daytime.
Typically, the shofar is sounded in the morning services at synagogues after the reading of the Torah and before the Musaf prayers. But, it is also not uncommon to hear the shofar blown several times during the day until sunset.

The significance of the Shofar in Judaism

The blowing of the shofar is there to remind all practicing Jews of the following:
• The Shofar sounding celebrates the moment God is crowned as the King of the World on Rosh Hashanah.
• A reminder of the time the prophets pleaded with Israel to return to God and his commandments.
• Commemorate the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem
• A reminder of the time Abraham nearly sacrificed Isaac who was then saved when God told Abraham to sacrifice a ram instead. This is why a ram’s horn is the preferred material for shofars.
• Remembers the shofar blasts during God’s descent to Mount Sinai.
• A sign of unity of the Jewish community who are spread across the globe as they come together to witness the Mashiach.

How a Shofar blast is performed

The shofar blaster starts by reciting some verses from the Psalms while standing on the platform at the front of the synagogue (the bimah). The first blessing is for God while the second one is for Shehecheyanu (a sort of thanksgiving for being blessed with another year of life).
The shofar sounding consists of a sequence of three types of blasts, tekiah (prolonged blast), sheverim (three short wails) and teruah (nine piercing blasts). There are as much as 100 shofar blasts at a shofar sounding in a synagogue.

An audience for the Shofar blowing

In traditional Judaism, the shofar sounds and fulfilling of the mitzvah are intended for adult males. Women and minor are exempt from the duty to fulfill the mitzvah. However, during modern times, every Jewish person is encouraged to practice the tradition including women and children.

What are Shofars made from?

As mentioned previously, a ram’s horn is a symbolic material to make a shofar because it reminds Jews of Abraham’s sacrifice of a ram to God instead of Isaac. However, according to the Talmud, the horns of all kosher animals can be used to make shofars but not ox horns (technically ox horns are referred to as Kerens, not shofars). Antlers are also not used because they are solid, and shofars are meant to be hollow.
The construction of shofars also differs from region to region. For example, Ashkenazi and Sephardic shofars are made from a ram’s horn whereas a Yemenite Shofar is made from the horns of a kudu and a Moroccan shofar is flat.
Properties / How Do You Select The Best Roofing Contractor To Fit Your Needs? by davidsmithjd: 6:49pm On Mar 17, 2019
Finding a roofing contractor that is trustworthy and gets the job well done can be a challenging task for any homeowner. It means you are investing your money in making your home beautiful and you would not want a shady person doing the job for you. It might even be after a storm has damaged your roof and you need a quick fix. You might want to do this hurriedly and just pick any contractor thrown to you without putting other factors into consideration. Your friends and family may recommend someone to you but this is not enough. You are the one who knows what you want and how you want it done. Below are a few tips on how to pick the best contractor for your roofing job:

Ensure the contractor has a valid insurance cover and a license

You do not want to be held accountable for accidents that occur while the contractor is roofing your house. Valid insurance means that the contractor will be covered in case of an accident in the workplace. And you will also get compensated whenever problems arise with the fixed roof. Tell the person to bring the certificate to you for your verification. If you have any doubts you can as well contact the insurance company to confirm the cover is valid.

Go for the local contractors

The place where you live might have a reputable roofing company. Getting a local contractor has its advantages even though you might be looking elsewhere. The chances of being scammed by locals are very minimal because they know the rules and the area members know them. It will also be easier for you to contact him in the future when a problem arises.

Do not base your choice of a contractor on price

Cheap is always expensive and it does not mean that the roofer should be too expensive. Hire roofers that deliver excellent work and uses good quality roofing materials. Agree on the terms of payment. Tell them how you want the work to be done and how long you want the job done before you pay.

A roofer should outline options for the materials to be used

You might not be conversant with all the materials that a roofing contractor might need. If this is the case, then you need to find someone who knows the materials he is supposed to use. Helps you decide on the best by telling you the pros and cons of each material. This is a person with your best interest at heart.
Education / Why English Is So Hard by davidsmithjd: 10:29am On Mar 13, 2019
Think about it, how many times have you walked up to someone and asked them something in English? Countless times right? Now think about the many instances that that person probably doesn’t speak English as a first language or even understand it. We may want to believe that English is a universal language but it really is not. A lot of people have no single clue on the English language or even how to speak it. That is just one of the reasons English is hard. There are a number of reasons that make it a difficult language.

1. It has a lot of contradictions

There are so many examples that make English confusing. Have you ever thought where the ham in hamburger is located? Crazy, right? Who even thought of naming it that way? How about pineapple? That is basically combining two fruits together that are not in the end product. There is neither pine nor apple in pineapple. It is not easy to figure the English language out. We may think that the same rules apply for everything but they do not. For instance, if vegans are supposed to eat vegetables, how about humanitarians? Surely not humans.

2. English UK and English US

If English is supposed to be spoken all over the world then it only makes sense that it be the same across the world. You will however find out that there are different versions. The UK and US are not the only ones but they are the most common. Some words are acceptable in one version and not the other. Some words are spelt differently in each version. For instance, you will find out that the word ‘categorise’ is ‘categorize’ in another English version. Depending on your teacher and what version you subscribe to, you stand a chance at failing simply because of one letter.

3. Pronunciation

This is another elephant in the room that needs to be addressed. You will find out that there are different pronunciations for different words. Some words are created in such a way that their pronunciation should almost be the same. For instance ‘trough’ and ‘rough’ are expected to be pronounced as ‘truff’ and ‘ruff’ respectively. The shocking thing is that they are pronounced as ‘troff’ and ‘ruff’. In some English versions, ’trough’ is pronounced as ‘trah’. It is very frustrating as one may not be able to know the meaning of a word or even understand the context it is being used in. it can be pronounced as another word hence distort the intended meaning.

4. Silent word

These are letters that are in a word but when pronounced, they are omitted. For instance ‘knife’ is pronounced as ‘naif’ the ‘k’ is silent. One therefore wonders its importance in the whole word if it is not going to get recognition.

5. Emphasis

This may look as something simple but emphasis has the power of altering the meaning of a simple statement. For instance, ‘I will read the book tomorrow’ is just a simple statement. Once it becomes ‘I will read the book tomorrow’, emphasis shifts on the doer. If it is the word ‘tomorrow’, it means that I shall specifically read the book tomorrow and not any other day. It all depends on what message is being communicated.
