Nairaland / General / New Regulation In Lagos May Affect Taxi Owners Badly by debola92(m): 7:20pm On Sep 05, 2016
Many tech-taxi services, especially Uber have had it good with the Lagos metropolitan. Uber even claims a 30% growth margin in the state than it did in its first 16 months in London. How incredible is that? But the song of their shoo-in might be muted by the recent regulation drive by the state government in Lagos.

According to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Prince Anofiu Olarewaju Elegushi who restated “the state’s commitment to regulate the mile to mile taxi system with a view to ensure safety and security of passengers.”

The recent regulation means taxi operators must register with the state in its bid to create a database of owners of such vehicles and issue franchise license. Vehicle owners must possess the adequate insurance facilities for vehicles and passengers alike and install safety gadgets in all its vehicles.

Franchises can include up to 50 cars at a cost of 100,000 naira per car!

That’s a big bump for... continue reading: http://notofcode.com/transportation/2016/09/05/lagos-hello-uber-bump-ahead/
Science/Technology / How to make money with ExpressWiFi by debola92(m): 6:42pm On Sep 05, 2016
The surprise visit of Facebook CEO and Founder, Mark Zuckerberg to Nigeria indeed injected a new dose enthusiasm and innovative exuberance to her tech ecosystem. As ‘selfies’ are shuttering around and handshakes were being exchanged, for me, Mark Zuckerberg’s trip to Nigeria revealed a new type of business initiative. Yes. A very lucrative one.

During his signature town hall meeting held in Victoria Island, he told a success story about Rosemary Njoku, a female entrepreneur who sells internet connectivity to people nearby. Although, she’s experienced the initial struggle of increasing her customer base, She has optimized her marketing process, and has been able to subscribe about 3000 customers on the service. Ok. That’s incredible.

Her story is indicative of the fact that the commercial value of selling internet connectivity is a very lucrative one, especially as the need for cheap data is ever fetching.

It was announced around late August, 2016 that Facebook has begun the deployment of Express WiFi hotspots around Lagos, Nigera in collaboration with coolink.ng. Nigeria will be the second location where ExpressWiFi is being deployed after India.

For informative purposes, Express Wifi works with carriers, internet service providers, and local entrepreneurs to help expand connectivity via Wifi hotspsots to underserved locations around the world. Express Wifi offers very affordable internet data compared to the average internet rates in Nigeria. Every Express Wifi hotspot is served by a 10Mbps connection that is shared between users. You can get 5GB monthly for just N1,600. Also, surprisingly you can 100MB for only N40.00 daily. Cheap, in’it?

WANT TO START THE EXPRESS-WIFI BUSINESS?

You need a Wi-Fi equipment including a... continue here: http://notofcode.com/internet/2016/09/05/connectipreneurship-facebooks-expresswifi/
Technology Market / Funding For Student Businesses. With Love From Fastforward. by debola92(m): 10:14am On May 28, 2016
A new wave of business opportunities may just be starting to eddy towards tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Emeka Ossai launched the Nigeria Campus Enterprise Challenge in 2012 to build a strong entrepreneurial culture on Nigerian Campuses and provide funding for viable student businesses. The project, in partnership with Nescafé, has run four editions in the Universities of Ibadan, Calabar and Benin, and students have generated over ₦20 Million in revenue. https://web.facebook.com/TheNigerianCampusEnterpriseChallenge/

Opeyemi Awoyemi and Olufunbi Falayi are also funding Undergraduates who already have businesses through FastForward Student Innovation Fund. The project plans to invest ₦200 Million with a distribution range of between ₦250,000 and ₦2,000,000 in exchange for up to 25% equity stake in the businesses.

Graduate unemployment in Nigeria is at an alarming high which begs the question — what is being taught in our schools? If education is supposed to be the way to be empowered, what changed? A lot has changed and it’s clear today that the way to create jobs is by encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship. And that’s why FastForward Student Innovation Fund was created — to support the innovators in our schools.
– Opeyemi Awoyemi

Intending participants can apply on FastForward’s website, fastforward.com.ng. Note however, the application form reads: FastForward Student Innovation Fund is not the everyday fund for business ideas. It is for visionary ideas that stand a chance of changing the world we live in today.

Technology Market / Update On The Amphibian Jet Car by debola92(m): 9:20am On May 28, 2016
There was an amphibian jet car. It roamed the streets of Lagos flaring out a staccato rhythm of engine beats.

Built by Durojaiye Kehinde Obasanjo out of scrap metal and recycled automobile engine parts, the amphibian jet car came prepackaged with a goal to seek tenancy on land, air and water. That goal was pushed as hard as it could go.

In many of the video littered on the boulevard of youtube, Durojaiye claimed many a time to have spent a better part of his youth building the hovercraft with the ultimate goal to have it air bound. For the most part, it served as a visual spectacle because you couldn't just have that prodigious-snoot-looking vehicle pass you by without giving it a relook. It was big, bold and booming.

And like a werewolf, the amphibian car was a shapeshifter. Durojaiye started out as lean as he could afford. From an aluminium body on four 16" wheels housing just a pilot seat and a simulated motorcycle steering, the car transformed into a huge post-model-T-coupe style hooptie.

I saw him a few times riding durtey, and he seemed to enjoy every bit of it. Durojaiye exudes passion whenever he speaks about his vehicle even while in the face of dispiriting comments from a cluster of naysayers or dealing with many failed promises from political figures to support his project. He claims to have spent about a million Naira in the construction for it to be worthy of its nomenclature; amphibian, and has proof in documented VCD tapes of the machine's movement on land and sea.

However, last week while trying to find better use of wasting gridlock time - typical of Lagos roads - I looked out of the window as if to beckon at a Gala (UAC brand of sausage) hawker, and right beside my gas guzzling Ford Windster was the amphibian jet car, lying on the edge of the street half dead like a wounded traveller, hoping for the stroll-by of a good Samaritan.

Is the dream dead or left till some other time someone decides to care? What if the task-force agency lugs the jalopy away into some bottomless chasm?

Only time will tell. Or better still, Durojaiye.

However, I think this might be an interesting expedition for a few mechanical engineering students to pick up, and work with Durojaiye to fulfil his the dream... of a properly built BuyNaijaToGrowtheNaira Made in Nigeria Amphibian jet car hovercraft. No?

Celebrities / Ruggedman, Terry G, Sasha P, And Gbemi Own Shoe Lines, But Who Is Wearing Them? by debola92(m): 6:04pm On Sep 05, 2015
It is not clear who started the shoe line venture among Nigerian celebrities. Durella launched 2GBASKI sneakers in 2010, and the venture died a year after. I’m not sure he sold one of those blue yuckness.

Then in 2011, Ruggedman launched TSW (20th September Wear – seriously). Although, he was accused of stealing the design of his first shoe label, he continued publicity.

It is unclear if the shoe line is still trading, but his cloth line, 8Figures still shows up on Jumia.

Then came Terry G, in 2011 too, with his Ginger Shoes (*teary eyes*). Did you ever see any of those?
Then Ini Edo...continue>> http://qollom.com/ruggedman-teery-g-sasha-p-ini-edo-and-gbemi-own-shoe-lines-but-who-is-wearing-them/
