Abagworo: Abacha stopped 419? Are you kidding me?. How much did Obasanjo leave as foreign reserves compared to Abacha?. The only good think that tyrant called Abacha did was to clean our financial institutions a little bit but Obasanjo was the guy that brought the merger issue into play which solidified our financial institutions the more. Nigerians enjoy GSM today and the thousands of jobs that come with it is because of Obasanjo. Our external debt was balanced to 0000 before he left office. He also cleaned the oil industry and stopped bunkering and all the ish with it. What else can this man do for you?. The only thing he got back from Nigerians is criticism and Nigerians are so lame that they even criticized him when he lost his wife. What a bunch of pathetic people. |

Gamine: A child is any human being under 15. The Nigerian constitution allows marriage from 12 and above but you and I know they are still children. A lot of things constitute to child abuse ranging from hawking to physical abuse. Do you know how many little girls that are abused sexually by agberos because they hawk oranges?. Do you know how many that have been raped by these sons of Cain?. And when they complain to their mothers, they do nothing about it because they want extra pay from the vending business. It's not hawking alone that should be banned. mothers that use their under aged daughters to facilitate their beer parlor business should go to jail. I hope the likes of Gbenga Daniel should emulate this instead of wasting his energy on harassing Iyabo Obasanjo. Go Fashola!. |

Seun: Parents should step up the plate and take care of their business. hawking by children is child labor and should be banned in its entirety. If not for the fact that Nigeria has no welfare structure, the banning should not be limited to school hours alone. Children should not be allowed to be vendors period. |

cmatrix: Every single Nigerian has benefited one way or the other from our oil money. I believe in true capitalism and not your obama style socialism that will soon freeze hell over. It's true that majority of our oil revenue entered wrong pockets but there was more accountability under Obasanjo . Today, Nigerian economy is not only booming but the safest in the world, thanks to baba Sege. If you don't believe that wealth trickles down, then I cannot help you because you are either a communist or a an eskimo. |

Peg the oil @$70 per barrell and 4play is asking for lower price. It's a pity that our infrastructures and industries are in still coma yet the only source of revenue that will enable creditors lend us more money is going down the drain and some Nigerians are here rejoicing and laughing with their treacherous mouth. What are we going to do if the oil money is no more?. We are not yet prepared to market technology, businesses are not strong yet etc and we need at least more ten years to put our acts together. Jinxing Nigeria is the worst thing you can do now and it's a pity the abuses are coming from educated run away citizens like 4play,Grafikdon and Debosky who live as aliens in their adopted nations. I can bet you guys that their university education in Nigeria was subsidized with the same oil money they don't want anymore meaning that the younger generation of Nigerians yet to obtain university training will not be able to reap the benefits they enjoyed during their college days in Nigeria because oil should be pegged at $25/barrel. Selfishness if you ask me. |

babs787: Christians means followers of Christ simple. The bible refers to born again christians as believers and you know that only that the stubborn spirit inherent in most of you will advise you to argue other than listen, believe and accept the real word of God. Nobody can get to God through any other means other than Jesus. You've been warned and do not let this response be a witness before you on judgment day. Allah said that He sent the prophets and Messengers with the same message, so how could Jesus' case be different. They are all Muslims. If it was the same message, why didn't He send one?. Do you believe that every prophet is of God? Rapture ke, Descend from the skyI pray the flakes covering your eyes shall open very soon before it's too late. Read about Jesus here Again, you are defining Jesus from the islamic perspective culled from the quran. How can a republican politician define and explain a democratic candidate to the people without misrepresenting him? |

babs787:The passage above can only be found in the quran. A book written for Moslems by Islamic scholars. What made you think that they wouldn't chip in that passage in order to scare people into islam?. I do not believe that any truth can be found in Quran since the concept was flawed from the beginning, so why should I believe that passage above?. Christ died so that you can have life and have it abundantly. Believe. |

I think Yar'Adua had set the budget for 2009 using £67/barrell as a benchmark, so this is bad news. He should revise the budget. I think OPEC nations should come together and reduce oil production by at least 50% to push of the price otherwise it will be falling lower and lower everyday until the West recuperates from bad economy. |

What was preached during American election is nothing but rhetoric. To hold that as fact will be very disturbing. Economics is much more complicated that the "trickle down effect" preached during the election which was said to make thing SIMPLE to the common man who has no understanding of such, Where is the complication? Break it down please, Mr Soludo?. Truth is whether the rich steal money or not, they must spend it, contracts must be awarded and the money will eventually trickle down to the common man and market woman. |

This is bogus news!!!! Not at all. Didn't you notice that the Nigerian economy improved immensely since the oil prices went high?. No matter how you steal the money, it will still trickle down to the common man. That is what John McCain was preaching to Americans but the Obama socialists will not listen. The high gas prices in America punished my pocket but whenever I remember that it's a sacrifice for my brothers and sisters in Nigeria, I take heart. |

Celebrities / Majek Fashek Relocates To Nigeria by DeepZone: 9:44pm On Nov 21, 2008 |
Majek Fashek: Back home for good? By Ayeni Adekunle Embattled reggae genius Majek Fashek is in the country. Okay, so you know already. But, did you know that the gifted music-maker will be in town till next year? Majek Fashek advertisement He arrived the country on September 27, aboard KLM; and, in what appears to be his longest stay here since relocating to the US nearly a decade ago, Majek is staying put in Nigeria, shuttling between Benin, in Edo State, and Lagos as his managers put finishing touches to an upcoming eight-city tour that'll precede the release of his new album. ''He'll be here for three months,'' Charles Novia, CEO of November records told e- Punch on Wednesday. "His new management EJ&Associates is putting a multi-city tour together, after which we will release his new album. The album will either be titled Water nor get enemy or Suffer not little children''. Majek's last trip to the country was a disaster - he arrived the country in 2006 looking drunk, worn and aged; and he later gave a woeful performance at the debut edition of the THISDAY music festival. Although when he spoke to journalists later, it appeared he still had a sound mind, and he often waxed philosophical, many were scared on his behalf. He confessed he was addicted to booze, and that the psychological trauma of losing his mom was too much for him to bear. Now, Majek is back, determined to re-work his way into the good books of Nigerians; determined to give his once successful career one more shot. And, thankfully, he still has loyal enthusiast, Novia beside him. "He's even-tually going to come back here. He's still testing the ground. If the tour works out and we release the album, he's considering coming here to do a Pangolo night at least once every month,'' Novia, who's working on a Majek biographical Film told e-Punch. Presently, the musician is believed to be staying in Abacha Estate, in Ikoyi, where he's working with his managers and select promoters to make the tour a success. http://odili.net/news/source/2008/nov/21/416.html |
Politics / Nigeria's Economy Under Threat As Oil Falls Below $50 A Barrel by DeepZone: 9:42pm On Nov 21, 2008 |
Nigeria's economy under threat as oil falls below $50 a barrel By Ayo Olesin, Sola Adebayo and Clara Nwachukwu with agency reports Oil prices, on Thursday, fell below the $50 per barrel mark for the first time in three and a half years, as fears of a global recession and weakening demand triggered huge sell offs in New York and London. advertisement Newswires reported that United States light sweet crude for December deliveries fell to $49.75 on the New York Mercantile Exchange, while the Brent crude, equivalent to Nigeria's Bonny Light, fell to $48.90 a barrel on the International Petroleum Exchange in London, the lowest since May 2005 and about 70 per cent lower than July's record price of $147. Energy industry experts said on Thursday, that this was not good news for Nigeria, as the sharp decline in oil prices raised the possibility of a serious deficit in the 2009 Federal Government budget, which is based on a revised $45 per barrel benchmark, down from $69 earlier projected. The losses in the international market were compounded by an indefinite shut down of 90,000 barrel per day of exports from Chevron's Escravos terminal due to an attack by militants on a major crude supply pipeline in Delta State. There were also reports that the Warri refinery had been hit by technical problems, which had resulted in the stoppage of production of refined products, raising the possibility of domestic fuel shortage this Christmas Chevron, which declared a force majeure on Thursday, said it had mobilised to repair the pipeline but it was premature to estimate when the work would be completed. Industry analysts suggested that the oil price slide might force another downward review of the 2009 budget projections, while capital-intensive infrastructure projects, including gas and power projects might suffer. There were also fears that sliding oil prices might constitute a disincentive for needed investments in further exploration activities by oil and gas majors. Members of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries are scheduled to meet on November 29, after opting to cut output by 1.5 million barrels per day. The Managing Director, International Energy Services, Dr. Diran Fawibe, said that Nigeria was at risk of a deficit budget if oil prices continued to slide. Apart from loss of revenue, he said many aspects of the economy would be affected, particularly the 2009 budget, which benchmark was on Wednesday, finally reduced to $45/bbl below previous estimation of $69/bbl by the Federal Executive Council. He said, "If the slide continues, it means revenue targets will not be achieved, and if government sticks to the $45/bbl benchmark, government will have to run a deficit budget, which is not good for the economy. "This will affect the capital budget, as government would have to rely on recurrent budget, which is even worse for us because capital budget will have a spiral effect on the economy. If the capital budget suffers, it means development will also suffer, especially infrastructure." Fawibe also pointed out that the continued depression of the market could limit countries' capacity to borrow. For Nigeria, which recently adopted the alternative funding measure, it would be more difficult for oil companies to borrow to execute oil projects. He argued that even if the oil price remained at par with the budget benchmark, there would still be negative impact on the excess crude revenue, and states would not have funds for their own developmental projects. Besides, he added, the cash call for the Joint Ventures would be affected because of poor funding due to dwindling revenue generation. He, however, said the situation could improve, "Although it appears the market is more turbulent than most people predicted, I think it would soon fizzle out. Just like oil price above $147/barrel was not sustainable in the long term, so also prices below $50/bbl might also not be sustainable in the long run. "What is left is to find an equilibrium, which is where OPEC comes in. Under the circumstances, it is certain OPEC will cut output to shore up prices. Maybe, not to get price up to $100/bbl, but something between $50 and $55/bbl." Also painting a gloomy picture, the Managing Director, Platform Petroleum, Mr. Austin Avuru, noted that the Federal Government might have to review the benchmark for the 2009 budget even lower. He said oil price below $50 was a very big problem for producing and consuming nations, especially for Nigeria, which economy was dependent on oil revenues. "We have a big crisis with so much of our production shut down. This is a very big problem because nobody projected oil at anything below $60/bbl this year, not the producers and even not the consumers. "Under the circumstances, only OPEC can salvage the situation using their machinery of trimming output. So it was a good thing that the clamour for Nigeria to pull out of the group because of quota issues did not work out, because we would have been in a worse situation now." http://odili.net/news/source/2008/nov/21/419.html |
Politics / Lagos Bans Hawking By Children During School Hours by DeepZone: 9:34pm On Nov 21, 2008 |
Friday, November 21, 2008 Lagos bans hawking by children during school hours By Kemi Obasola The Lagos State Government on Thursday said street hawking during school hours would no longer be tolerated in the state. advertisement The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, said this was the only way to ensure that children of school age are regular and punctual at school during lesson hours. According to her, the state would henceforth begin to sensitise parents on the need to send their children to school, while law enforcement agents would also be sensitised to arrest errant parents in order to prosecute them to serve as a deterrent to others. She said, "Education and proper upbringing of our children is the only way to eradicate poverty. The law forbids the use of under-aged children for domestic labour, negligence and maltreatment on the part of parents and guardians as it negates the tenets of the Child Rights law. "The Lagos State Government through the various agencies of government will ensure the survival, development and protection of all the children in the state, the laws will be enforced to the letter in order to ensure that all the rights of our children are protected." Orelope-Adefulire, who decried the high rate of child sexual abuse in the country, noted that the problem though universal, had become alarming. She said, "Therefore, increased attention, efficient protection skills and preventive measures are necessary at family, local, national and international levels. "My ministry collaborates with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and Other Related Matters on issues bordering on women and child trafficking. "The ministry has embarked on the construction of a shelter for trafficked women and children at Ayobo. "After a long period of silence, child sexual abuse is being more denounced and becoming a public and political issue." The commissioner noted that her ministry had decided to produce a simplified version of the Child Rights Law 'so that no one tramples on these rights." In a related development, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Risikat Akiode, has said the ministry is ready to prosecute anyone who abused the fundamental rights of children. Akiode said awareness would be created among children in the state on their rights. "We will educate them to say no to child sexual abuse and where their rights are being abused, to know the appropriate channel to seek redress," she said. She said it was a pity that many children who had been sexually abused were dying in silence because of the social stigma attached to survivors of the illicit act. http://odili.net/news/source/2008/nov/21/407.html |
