Politics / Colonialism Or Self Rule? by DeGuru1(m): 12:53pm On Nov 24, 2009
Colonialism refers to the practice or exertion of control by a powerful country on another country or group or territory.Colonialism was supported due to the military capability and economic buoyancy of the controlling country on her territories. Most countries that were colonised suffered from economic dependency among other internal challenges that gave room to colonialism.France, Britain and Portugal are some countries known as colonial masters. Most African countries have experienced the sweet bitter taste of colonialism .
Nigeria was colonised by Britain.Colonial rule could not be noted to be too bad except for the feeling of dominance, dependency, bondage and what was considered as a theft of our economic resources .If nothing good should be mentioned about colonialism at least the harmonisation and unity of Nigeria’s divergent ethnic groups and religions as one Nigeria is worth appreciating.
Self rule refers to the practice of control by citizens of the said territory, group or country .After vigorous efforts by some great Nigerians in the late 1950’s, Nigeria wa granted autonomy and independence in 1960. Although this freedom was hampered by self militarism. This was self rule but the desired freedom to be distinct from colonialism was still lacking here.
In 1991, self rule was said to be realised as hopes of democracy arose, however, years after being self governed , one doubts if there is any demarcation difference between colonialism and self rule.
During the colonial days, the region now called Nigeria was not known as one of the greatest corrupt countries,a center of electoral manipulations and widespread fraud. It is painful when enslaved, marginalised and maltreated by fellow country men and women.
Till date, most Nigerians are yet to see any meaningful difference between colonialism and self rule in Nigeria as many has suggested that instead of fellow citizens taking away our resources and fortunes into their pockets and mansions, foreigners(colonialists) would have continued to rule us and equitably share the resources among us.
Has self rule(Democracy) actually being of any great help to Nigeria and Nigerians compared to colonialism?

Education / ASUU May Embark On Another Stike Action Soon. by DeGuru1(m): 12:41pm On Nov 24, 2009
If the news parading the Nigeria waves recently is any thing to go by, then the Academic Staff Union of Universities may soon embark on another strike action .This is connected to the disclosure by the Secretary General of the National Universities Commission. The Secretary said that the Accountant General of the federation,Ibrahim Dankwama has said that the presidency has mandated him to implement the principle of ‘no work no pay’ as threatened by the federal government during the industrial action by the academic union.
Although, ASUU is yet to respond to the development, some concerned Nigerians as well as Nigerian students in the various tertiary institutions have expressed fears over what they termed the tricky and insincere behaviour of the Nigerian Government towards a stable educational reform.
It may interest you to know that despite the call-off of the four months old strike by ASUU some months ago, full academic activities is yet to begin in some universities.
Indeed, Nigerian students may not have the patience of tolerating this from the Nigerian Government, therefore all hands must be on deck to ensure that what kept us at home for over four months does not repeat itself.

Politics / Should President Yar’adua Go For A Second Term? by DeGuru1(m): 12:23pm On Nov 21, 2009
Back in 2007 presidential campaign, many has speculated that the former Rivers state Governor, Dr. Peter Odili among other top presidential campaigners had a upper and favorable hand .Not until their hopes and chances were lately dashed and pushed to the dark by former president Obasanjo led PDP in its normal tricky manners. Public opinion then had it that the emergence of Yar’Adua as PDP presidential candidate, the less than 24 hours step down of Dr. Odili and others as well as the fraudulent election primary of the PDP was not only a big threat to the credibility and fair play in the 2007 General elections but also as a fulfillment of a promise already made to the dead, that was inevitable to break. This was based on the saying that former president Obasanjo had an agreement with the late Shehu Yar’Adua as regards their political ambitions, and was therefore bound to fulfill the agreement with any of the next capable Yar’Adua blood even after the dead of the other party to the claimed agreement .Before this more than miraculous incidence, many Nigerians had doubted if president Yar’Adua had any plan to run the presidential race then. But with the optimal support, do or die politics of the PDP and the pre-considered benefits of becoming the President of the most populous African country seemed to have left the president with no option than the grab the golden opportunity. For the campaign speech from him then was not even good enough to convince a child to vote for as president.
Now his four years is gradually coming to an end with no significant achievement despite all his promises embedded in the so called 7 point agenda and the vision 2020.Amist his numerous challenges of overcoming the Nigerian spirit and induced forces including his health, speculations are on the way whether he has an intention of running for the second term come 2011 as the president .
According to the Guardian Newspaper dated Thursday the 19th day of November 2009, the political Adviser to the president, Chief Polycarp Nwite debunked the excuse of the president’s ill-health and revealed that over 50 groups spread across the country are working for the bid of the president for a second term in office in 2011 under the umbrella of Yar’Adua for New Nigeria (YNN)
The questions are who are these groups? Whose interests are they pursuing the second teem for? And on what basis?
Nigeria no doubt needs an overhaul in her electoral system and a better acceptance and glory in the global eyes. We shall never tolerate candidate imposition as shown in the recent Anambra saga. We need a total revolution and a great Nigeria that we all shall be proud of.
If these will be achieved, then we need to rise to the challenge of building a better Nigeria. This is why I had brought this to us. Is Yar’Adua, the kind of president Nigeria really needs come 2011 again? Are his achievements good enough for a second term? These are other lining questions that I have summed under this topic. I ask again SHOULD YAR’ADUA GO FOR A SECOND TERM. Nigerians what are your views?

Education / Tension In Uniport As Militants Protest. by DeGuru1(m): 4:57pm On Nov 20, 2009
The ex-militant kept at Aluu ,a nearby village to the University of Portharcourt and a village mainly occupied by students, ran into rancour and pandemonium through a very danderous protest from the militants. The ex-militants said that they ran out of patient after their allowances was not paid to them. They also complained of poor living condition at the camp,in what they describe as governmental negligence, insincerity and abandonment.
Meanwhile before this protest, the students at Aluu have been complaining of incessant robbery attacks on them ,which they had suspected the ex-militants or their allies to be responsible.
During the protest, goods and property worth millions of naira were either stolen or destroyed, people wounded and over four(4) girls striped naked on the school road and raped right there while it was also reported that about four other girls were seized to their camp.
Many has queried the university management over what their described as unwelcomed and a result of negligence."If not why did the school for the first instance allowed the rehabilitation camp to be located closer to the university, considering the security threat and negeative impacts that this will have on these youths at school" an interverwee queried.
In a total rejection of the development and keeping to the ALUTA SPIRIT of "injury to one, injury to all" alive, the university Student Union Goverment president Comrade Amadi Solomon led other angry students to the Rivers State government house to file their grievances. One of the things they demanded was the immediate relocation of the camp from any location closer to the school or best located at the government house or Aso rock.In response, the Rivers state commissioner of commerce who received the students on behalf of the Governor urged them to be peaceful and law abiding as the government will look into the events rightly.
Meanwhile, academic activities at the university has been paralysed due the incidence. The chapter president of ASUU,Dr. Andrew Afemini said that academic activities cannot continue in a place where their peace is threathened and vowed that it shall continue to be so until the camp was removed totally from the school environment.
