Politics / Re: Malta N580: Dangote N897 by DeLaRue: 1:44pm On Sep 04 |
So called 'Malta' price was heavily subsidised by NNPC. Now NNPC has announced they are in massive debt, may be as a result of the subsidy it was paying. With Dangote, it seems subsidy is finally going to go away or be reduced substantially. If Republic of Benin, Ghana, Niger Republic etc can buy fuel at over N1300 per litre, we must be willing to accept N850 or more per litre in Nigeria unless we want subsidy to continue and we bankrupt Nigeria. Cheap petrol is not a constitutional right or an entitlement. 12 Likes |

You ought to be arrested, detained, paraded on TV, detained again and denied food throughout, until you are arraigned before a magistrate. The magistrate should then deny you bail, as you are a danger to the rest of society. Your case should not be revisited for at least a year while you languish in prison. When your case comes up for prosecution, you should be convicted and sentenced to a prison term. Very irresponsible. 63 Likes 7 Shares |
Politics / Re: What Is The Official Dangote Fuel Price by DeLaRue: 12:03pm On Sep 04 |
The government should just make sure not one kobo of subsidy is involved. After all, the fraudulent subsidy did not reduce the price. Many are still paying around N1000. If that means we pay around N850 for Dangote petrol, fine. We just want fuel to be available at all times. |
Politics / Re: Oando’s Market Value Jumps From N70bn To N1 Trillion In Tinubu’s First Year by DeLaRue: 11:58am On Sep 04 |
Tens of thousands of ordinary Nigerians own shares in Oando. Teachers, Carpenters, Nurses, doctors, shop owners, food sellers, and all manners of hard working Nigerians own shares in the company. They are all laughing to the bank. For as little as N5000, you too can buy shares in Oando any time you are ready. Be smart, instead of spending 24/7 on social media wasting your time lamenting about Tinubu this or that, based on false information. Oando is doing legitimate business. 1 Like |

The thread is thin because people don't want to acknowledge good news from this government. A few months ago, threads after threads were about how Nigeria is a jungle due to lack of power and this government is the worst ever. For at least 2 - 3 months now, power supply been been improving slowly. Rather than acknowledge the good news, bitter people will read the thread, hiss to themselves and quietly move to other threads where they can vocalise their histrionics Personally, I believe this is the best President Nigeria has had for a long term. Things will start improving on many fronts soon. 4 Likes |

2special: Oando did not make any deal with NNPC in recent weeks. Agip (an Italian company) sold 20% interest it had in a joint venture to Oando. The amount of misinformation and disinformation on social media is astounding. On you tube, there are so many barely articulate Nigerians pushing out videos of information they know to be false. 'Tinubu acquires NNPC joint venture assets' 'Tinubu's family takes overNNPC's assets' 'Tinubu's family taking over everything' 'Tinubu fast tracks Oando's deal' 'Tinubu taking over everything'. The overwhelming majority of those pushing out these lies on YouTube and other social media are from a particular part of the country. OkCornel: 1. The President himself did not make that remark. The report in the link '...Mrs Anet said the government was targeting 50 million jobs...' Mrs Doris Anet, who I found out to be the Minister for trade and industry minister was the one that made that statement, not the President. 2. While some ministers are fond of overly optimistic promises, you cant credit all comments by ministers to the President. 3. Also, she might be taking an 8 year perspective, in which case, 50 million jobs, although unlikely is not impossible. That's about 4.5 million per year. In a country of 220 million, it is possible. 4. If a Minister say, the 'government will create jobs', it doesn't mean the government will set up factories to employ 50 million people. It simply means the government will administer the economy in a way that the economy will create 50 million tailors, lecturers, lawyers, hairdressers, brick layers and so on. But of course, many, including you, thought the Minister said the government would itself employ 50 million create. It is the private sector that will create most jobs, not the government. |
Politics / Re: President Tinubu's New Presidential Jet Helps Avoid Disgrace In China by DeLaRue: 6:58am On Sep 03 |
OkCornel: All of these problems have been present in one shape or another since independence. Infact, one of the reasons given by those who carried out the first military coup in 1963 (61 years ago!) was corruption, lack of inclusion, poor governance etc. Since then, under Messrs Gowon, Obasanjo (military), Shagari (read about Umaru Dikko), Babangida, Abacha, Obasanjo (civilian), Jonathan, Buhari, did those problems get better or worse. If all those governments couldn't solve the problems, it is unrealistic to expect a government that is less than one and a half years to turn things around in a dramatic fashion. It is never too early to criticise any government, but we have to be realistic. We need to be patient. Even at that, there is no guarantee that any government will make a dramatic difference to the situation in Nigeria. If it was that easy, previous governments will have done it. Nigeria is about 65 years old. Egypt is more than 2000 years old, and it is not better than Nigeria. It lives on a lot of handouts from rich Arab countries and the USA. India nko. Pakistan, Bangladesh, and most countries in countries? They are all struggling to transform their countries. It is simply not easy. That is the reality. |

That famous Pepsi tagline 'image is everything'. Especially in international relations, how you present yourself matters. Imagine a Nigerian President travelling to China in Ethiopian Airlines under Ethiopian flag or Turkish Airlines just because of the CURRENT economic situation in Nigeria. So, the President will first fly to Addis Ababa, hang out with his entourage in the airport for 5 or 6 hours while waiting for the connecting flight to China? Yet it is the same people complaining that he bought a plane that will snap a picture of the President waiting in Addis Ababa and rush to social and mock the country '...see the President of a whole Nigeria'. You do, they complain, you don't they complain. So if Nigeria didn't byt the plane, the price of garri and bread would have reduced abi. Also, does the plane belong to the President personally or to Nigeria?. When he lives office, he will take it with him abi. 3 Likes |

Politics / Re: NNPC Is The Cabal. Why Must They Be The Sole Buyer From Dangote? by DeLaRue: 12:07am On Sep 03 |
OkCornel: The middle men that are causing artificial price difference of as much as N300 per litre within the same State, or even city, are they working in the interest ofthe people? The NNPC is now a limited liability company registered with the CAC, and it published its first audited accounts as a limited company about 3 weeks ago. Unlike before, it will now have to publish those accounts every year going forward. This should help transparency A LITTLE BIT, but we all know that NNPC will always be a corrupt organisation. You can say the same about all government organisations. They are all corrupt. All that said, I trust NNPC more than the middle men as far as stable fuel price is concerned. Like I said, for several year now, NNPC filling stations always sell at the lowest price, and their price doesn't fluctuate any how. |
Politics / Re: NNPC Is The Cabal. Why Must They Be The Sole Buyer From Dangote? by DeLaRue: 11:52pm On Sep 02 |
The middle men in the petrol supply chain have not exactly covered themselves in glory. As with other sectors, including food distribution, middlemen have made the situation worse by increasing prices and taking advantage of consumers. Whatever you think of the NNPC, petrol at NNPC filling stations are still the cheapest. And why is it that some filling stations are selling at just over N600, while others are selling for N900 or more in the same State. It means somebody some where (more likely a middle man) is exploiting petrol buyers. And these middlemen are uncontrollable. Let's see what NNPC as sole buyer can do. If they can cut off the greedy operators, then it is a win for the people. Dealing with Dangote directly may also help to streamline the workings of a subsidy, so that rather than paying cash subsidy, NNPC may sell crude at a cheaper price and get the petrol cheaper too. |

Agencies are ultimately answerable to the President. The President has the constitutional right to task a trusted appointee of his to check what the hell is going on in many of the inefficent agencies. If that trusted person is the Chief of Staff, so be it. Nobody knows what many of these agencies do. Many of them are a coven of corruption and if you're not from an Agency's Oga's tribe, no promotion for you. Majority of new employees are usually from Oga's tribe. The report was by 'Daily Trust'. Ha ha ha. We know why. |
Politics / Re: Indigenous Company, Starlink Global Accounts For 30.93% Of Non-Oil Exports by DeLaRue: 10:56pm On Sep 01 |
Armaggedon: So even assuming all the company does is buy cocoa and other agricultural produce from farmers, warehouse, grade, package, transport and ship them to importers in Europe and Asia. According to you their one billion dollar revenue should not be 'ascribed to them'. Do you know how many thousands of people the company employs directly and indirectly? Also, do you know how many Indian companies are in Lagos, Ibadan, and Akure doing a similar business and they are big businesses. Some of them have been in Nigeria for more than 30 years. I know one in particular that opened a EU head office in the UK. This is big business. For a local company to not only beat these foreign companies, but generate 30% of Nigeria's total non-export revenue in a month is extraordinary. And the man makes zero noise. Finally, why are you so bitter about someone else doing well. 15 Likes |

If the owner of that business makes just 10% profit on the $1 billion revenue, that's $100 million dollars a year. I don't believe there are up to 20 people in Nigeria who consistently make up to that amount per year. And the guy makes zero noise. A person like that deserves respect. 7 Likes |

I agree with the thesis that education is a key area for turning Nigeria's fortunes around. We have too many kids who are not in school and so are unlikely to be able to read or write. While education doesn't guaranty success in life, it gives you a very good chance of making a life for yourself. |
Politics / Re: The Only Thing That Can Save Nigeria Is Slowing Down Population Growth by DeLaRue: 1:59pm On Aug 30 |
Also how do you identify a good leader. Someone that is nice? honest? not interested in stealing money? Even if you have a person that has all those attributes, that does not guarantee he will be able to change Nigeria. You mean the corruption, theft, greediness that is endemic all over the country will suddenly change because the President is a good man. The bad actors - kidnappers, bandits, terrorists etc will get an epiphany and stop their activities because...the President of Nigeria is a 'good' man? That's fantasy. Ain't happening. |
Politics / Re: The Only Thing That Can Save Nigeria Is Slowing Down Population Growth by DeLaRue: 1:41pm On Aug 30 |
If the problem was all about the leaders, how come Nigeria has not found a single good leader since 1960 to turn things around. A 'good leader' in today's Nigeria will be so constrained by vested interests that he will spend less than 2 years in the role before people start calling him 'useless'. Also, a leader is just one person. In addition to being good, the leader also have to find hundreds of thousands of 'good' people to be ministers, civil servants, military officers, police men, political appointees etc at both federal, state, and local government levels. He will also need millions of other 'good' people like vulcanisers, tailors, welders, traders, middlemen, car washers, filling station operators. You can name any category of Nigerians. Most of them are all of the same mold - dishonest, deceitful, greedy, corrupt, selfish, ungovernable etc So where are the good people in Nigeria. Goodluck finding a civilian leader that can fundamentally change Nigeria. The usual claim that if a Nigerian leader sets a good example, Nigerians will change their bad ways is fanciful. The problems of Nigeria are more complex than just findind a good eader. |
Business / Re: SA's Economy To Register Strongest Growth In A Decade & Beyond (PICS) by DeLaRue: 2:34am On Aug 30 |
WannaHowzit: It did not become Africa's largest economy by economic growth. The South African economy has had little to no growth in the padt 10 years. The only reason it is tge largest economy in Africa now is because of the devaluation of the naira. Imagine Nigeria, Egypt, South Africa being students in a class. For about 10 years, Nigeria was the best student, always coming first with an average mark of 70 out of 100. During that same period, South Africa usually scored 62 marks to come 2nd and Egypt 54 to com 3rd. Then in the 11th year, Nigeria falls ill (naira devaluation), and is unable to perform well in school. As a result, he is now scoring 45, instead of 75 that he used to score. South Africa is now scoring 59 and Egypt 51. South Africa is now first in the class, while Egypt is 2nd, and Nigeria is 4th. But you can see that South Africa is not first because it is performing better than before. Infact, it's current score of 59 is less than the 62 it used to score. It is first because the student (Nigeria) that used to come first is struggling. If the naira improves to around $1000, Nigeria will be first again in Africa. Nigeria is only suffering a temporary setback. Looking to the future, Nigeria will be the undisputed giant of Africa. In terms of the size of the economy, South Africa will be no match for Nigeria. Assuming Nigeria gets its act together. 1 Like 1 Share |

Xxxxtentacion2: South Africa's economy is forecast to grow by 1% in 2024. You say it is good news. A few days ago, it was reported that Nigeria 's economic growth was trending at over 3% for 2024. Yet, you are happier celebrating a worse economic performance by a foreign country 1% growth this year will be South Africa's best performance in 10years! Whereas in the past 10 years, I doubt there has been a year when Nigeria's economy has not grown by at least 2%. As for looting, only a few days ago, the South African government announced it was investigating over $7 billion dollars of stolen government money. https://www.google.com/amp/s/abcnews.go.com/amp/International/wireStory/south-africa-investigating-alleged-corruption-7b-top-state-113188629 But according to you, South Africa is a paragon of honest living. flokii: I get where you're coming from, but the C-in-C can give whatever order he likes, if the heads of the highest security agencies and the military can't execute the orders, the order is as good as meaningless. If the Chief of Army Staff, for example, tries to execute the C-in-C's order, he will have to do it through the chain of command below him. You only need one dodgy senior officer in that chain for that command to break down. That is why previous Presidents were constantly changing the heads of the military with no permanent improvement because it is not just about the heads. I suspect it is usually a few individuals within the lower ranks that undermine things. One has to feel sorry for the field personnel who do the actual fighting. It must be difficult being sent into battles not knowing whether someone within your organisation is feeding information to the trouble makers. |

Then you will see the whole thing escalate to a new level. That was what happened to Mr Jonathan. Yet, in the lead up to Mr Buhari 2nd term election, insecurity appeared to reduce tangibly. Even though these trouble makers also gave Mr Buhari hell, it seemed they put some political factors into consideration. This tells me that some (not all) of the insecurity in that part of Nigeria is sponsored by disgruntled people. Some of these people are into illegal mining of mineral resources like gold and others. When a President puts a Southerner in charge of dealing with terrorists and bandits, Northern politicians oppose and do everything possible to destabilise that President, especially if the President is from the South. They did that to Mr Jonathan. There was a Chief of Army Staff from the South East that did quite well against terrorists then. I can't remember his name. Certain elements from the North wanted him removed. The current President wanted to avoid all that palaver by putting virtually all the key defence offices in Northern hands, yet no improvement. NIA - Northerner NSA - Northerner Minister of Defense - Northerner Deputy Minister for Defense - Northerner Chief of Army Staff - Northerner DSS - Northerner, until he resigned a few days ago. Not that I know whether the 'military personnel' quoted is fake or not. However, it is just curious that all these years the entire security agencies still don't have basic technologies to trace and locate the trouble makers. No be small thing o. 13 Likes 2 Shares |

The government needs to find a legal way to clip the wings of this NLC. The police invited the man. No big deal. If you or you organisation has committed a crime under the law, the police can prosecute you - again, no big deal. The NLC thinking they're bigger than the law just shows how weak the present government is. Under Mr Buhari, ASUU went on strike for 8 months. The man did not bat an eyelid and refused to pay their salary during the 8 months. Nobody begged ASUU before they returned to work and even after going back to work, Mr Buhari still refused to pay them. The current President generously paid 4 months out of the 8 months despite the fact that under the 'no work, no pay' rule applied by Mr Buhari, they were not entitled to the 8 months salary. The current government has also settled the minimum wage with NLC. Yet, every little thing, the NLC threatens to shut the country down. Could they try this under Mr Buhari. Absolutely not. 55 Likes 8 Shares |
