Today, the 16th of September 2014, a colleague showed me a story in the newspapers and I thought, that's it! All graduates need to hear this. Twenty-two year old United Kingdom born Nigerian, Alfred Ajani employs an unconventional job-search method to break off the shackles of unemployment. Wow! Simply amazing. I have cheered, clapped and stopped myself from grinning foolishly at the newspaper page containing the story. This is a perfect example of a dare-devil graduate. Many things could go wrong in an interview because there is more than one person involved. However, if anything will go wrong, make sure it is not your fault. There are some words that should have no business showing up in an interview. They are repulsive and will kill whatever appeal you had with the recruiter. Your tenses, pronunciations, your choice of words and much more. The Questions: #DearRecruiter I am a graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University and I have been longing for this opportunity for a while now, it feels like a dream or perhaps its some fluke privilege chance that am finally writing you, and I'm doing this in faith of your reply. I have heard a lot about before graduation, of how gruesome you are especially your bias in deciding who remains unemployed or hungry after graduation, I am yet to come up with my own conclusions of your true identity. However unlike my peers I strongly don't agree to the norms of blaming it all on the government because I strongly believe we are not necessarily a product of our government's failures, rather reverse is the case. I wouldn't want to pre-empt myself, so I would love you to provide answers to the following throbbing questions. A. Why do the ill-qualified get the jobs over the qualified. (A science graduate preferred over a social science graduate for a slot meant for social scientists) B. What are the odds of me ever getting my dream job(passion)... http://delabourconsultants..com/2014/05/graduate-meets-recruiter-episode-1.html Twitter: @DeLCTweets Facebook: @De Labour Consultants |

#DearRecruiter, What should an attractive CV look like? #DearGraduate, The question of attractive CVs is one that keeps coming up because there are so many templates and advices all around – on the internet, from friends and so on. There are no specifics but there are standards and you are allowed to adapt your Curriculum Vitae as you wish. It is those standards that #DearRecruiter will be talking about today. Let us use a very easy to understand analogy – A shopping mall. If you have ever visited a standard shopping mall, the first thing you would notice is the floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors. Every attractive item on display inviting you to buy. On the flip side, those windows help you decide if one shop holds the items you seek so you do not go into an electronics shop looking for clothes. Your CV is like a glass wall. It either attracts or repels employers and hiring managers. It should reflect in a glance all the goodies that come with you. So clear a document that one does not require an interpreter to understand what you have written therein... To continue with the letter, visit http://delabourconsultants..com/2014/07/graduate-meets-recruiter-episode-8.html Follow on twitter: @DeLCTweets, Facebook/LinkedIn: @De Labour Consultants Sincerely, DeLC. |

#DearGraduate Thank you for getting in touch with #DearRecruiter. We agree that this has been a major problem in recruitment. Not that we are trying to make excuses for the continued existence of this problem. In truth, every recruiter owes it to applicants to give them useful feedback for every application received. However, this seems not to be the case in 8 out of 10 recruitment exercises. There are a lot of candidates for every recruitment exercise, sometimes it is just easier to contact those who passed and leave the rest unbothered. Also, a lot of job seekers find it difficult to accept a letter of rejection. The calls, texts and emails require special attention which the recruiter might not be able to afford. #DearGraduate, if you have waited for a while and received no feedback from the recruiter, don’t lose hope. There are sometimes internal factors beyond the recruiter’s control that may cause a delay in the recruitment process. Of a truth, some applicants have been known to resume a recruitment process after several months of silence. So #DearGraduate, while you wait, continue with your job search and let us hope that very soon, something good will come your way. We wish you the very best in your job search. Sincerely yours, #DearRecruiter Follow us on Twitter @DeLCTweets, Like our page on Facebook @ De Labour Consultants, LinkedIn: De Labour Consultants http://delabourconsultants..com/2014/06/graduate-meets-recruiter-episode-5.html From the Professionals, The reason is that most agencies only communicate with the successful candidates where they get paid. If they don't get paid they don't respond. I get agencies asking for my CV, I send it and then do not get even an acknowledgement.. There are the very odd few that do. Say 1 in 100 but the rest. Being an ex manager of an agency, the only people we did not respond to are those that wrote in on spec. The rest deserve a response. With the latest recruitment software there is no excuse for bad manners - R.W (Senior HR Professional) ...It also leaves the candidate in confusion to proceed with another interview and also to understand where he has to improve - U.V (Group Head, Operations) |

My views may differ slightly from those who have commented before me. But, I am from an older era, so pardon me. Second Class Lower division is not a disadvantage if the holder is going back for post-graduate degree; and if he/she acquires skills relevant for the industry he wants to operate in. However, for recruitment into many blue chip organizations (ask the ones that used to interview the candidates in U.I., Ife, UNN and other universities of their time), they were interested in candidates who made Second Class Upper because they considered that the effort, discipline and factors which made the candidate have the class of degree would be brought to bear in the work place. And remember that people used to earn their degrees in those days - cheating in exams was unheard of. So you could say they will defend their degree before any judge at any place of work. That's why First Class and Second Class Upper are still preferred till today by top companies in every sector. What younger people ought to do is put their minds to their studies while in the university if they don't like this type of discrimination based on class of degree. (LinkedIn User) |

I believe our assignment should be to encourage graduates to develop themselves beyond their class of degree. Of what use is a first class degree in Fishery when you are being interviewed for a job in the Banking Sector? Obviously, the recruiter is more interested in skills that go beyond the degree. Have a wonderful day. (LinkedIn User) |
![]() |
This question was asked on twitter, facebook and linkedin. Here are some of the answers from professionals across different fields. Having second class lower is not a disadvantage only if you can explain to the interviewer that you have got other experiences, skills and competencies relevant to the post. The only drawback I think will be during the recruitment phase where a recruiter specifies the class of degree. In all I think recruitment or selection should not be based on classes of degree rather it should be judged by what the candidate can bring to the organization. There are some people who juggled part-time jobs while schooling which may affect their academic performance but have more practical job experience, sound interpersonal skills, and organization skills than others. (LinkedIn User) |

At my last interview, I was asked, 'Why should you be given the job when you have a 2:2 and there are so many 2:1 applicants'? How do I respond to this?
